This expansion for Galactic Civilizations III is a solid gameplay update that introduces the ability to buy merc ships, overall adding to the long war space battles that the base game introduced.

The Mercenaries expansion adds to the already great game with new races to play with, new campaigns to conquer and new ways to dominate the galaxy.

It's light on features for an expansion, but Mercenaries adds some welcome volatility to the 4X sandbox.

All the same, there’s enough here to bring you back to Galactic Civilizations III and give you enough to enjoy a good few more hours with space battles and planet cultivation, and if that sounds like it’s worthwhile then the price might not put you off. Everyone else may want to wait for a sale.

In summary, if you like GalCiv3, you will like this expansion. The primary problem with it is simply the lack of new material.

Playing against other players in Galactic Civilizations 3: Mercenaries offers far more bang for your buck as far as this DLC goes. The AI does not seem to utilise the expansion, whereas with humans it can indeed be a very intense rush for the good ships. It will feel slightly cheap to those just beating on computers, though.

While it's not a complete waste, Mercenaries is a disappointment, and it left me second-guessing my allies in war.

Really doesn't feel like it is moving the game forward, which is what you want an expansion to do. Its main feature, mercenaries often seem pointless and the way they are done gives the very limit spans of usefulness (if at all). Full Review »
