The only thing I didn’t like about Flinthook is its uneven difficulty level, but that simply comes with the rougelike elements. Other than that it’s an excellent game. [07/2017, p.58]

All told, Flinthook is a damn good time. It’s demanding with its difficulty but provides all of the tools necessary for success; not so cruel as to seem unfair but steadfast in its expectations of the player. The core mechanics are satisfying to use and well balanced, while offering the player ways to upset individual aspects of that balance through perks and carve out their own style.

Flinthook is a fine video game that sunk its hooks into me with easy to pick up and play gameplay, a catchy soundtrack, and cute characters. It's easily a recommendable rogue-lite for any fans of the genre or platformers in general. Just don't expect the game to anchor you to your seat unless you're the kind of person that needs to uncover every piece of treasure possible. Even if you aren't, Flinthook is a dandy game, in space.

Flinthook is another great Roguelite game. Frantic, challenging and solid level design.

Zipping around levels with your hookshot and using your various power-ups to navigate some of the tough scenarios that the game throws at you is rewarding. If Roguelikes are your thing, but you’re not looking for something that’s too taxing Flinthook is worth a look.

A satisfying, moreish take on the roguelike formula, and one that's most likely to appeal to genre naysayers.

A quite decent roguelike which, with the exception of some unfair difficulty spikes, delivers in non-stop action, well-crafted gameplay and variety in its randomized levels. The mix of sci-fi and old-school pirate theme is also a plus.

Flinthook’s clever controls and mechanics bring challenging gameplay that requires practice to make perfect. Procedurally-generated levels and progression through death ensure a unique experience, reinforced by pleasing visuals and an equally accomplished soundtrack. All will find themselves motivated to keep playing, and lovers of the rogue-lite genre will surely appreciate the twists that successfully make Flinthook a fresh experience in a saturated market.

Not all aspects in Flinthook fit together seamlessly. Above all, it’s a game for lenient genre-fans.

  1. Flinthook’s world is weird, with its space ghost pirates, animal ruffians and giant robots, but as colourful and crowded as some of these screenshots look, I’ve always found the rooms easy to read. That’s important because underneath all of the silliness and the roguelite elements, there’s a tight and challenging game that would be a delight even without its superb structure and flow. With that carefully crafted layer around it, Tribute have made one of the year’s best action games.

Clearly a blatant and idiotic attempt to hurt the release of this game for reasons that are publicly unclear. This is a really good game with a fantastic grappling hook mechanic, and it's a boat load of fun. I came on here wanting to share the enjoyment I was getting out of this well crafted game and am finding that the bizarre, coordinated negative attacks via review are putting a damper on that. Why be a sh**ty person and denigrate a great small game, from a small development team. Both of you two morons need have a casual peek in the mirror and make sure your outward fecal projection is what you hoped it would be. Get a life; preferably one that doesn't belittle the efforts, especially those that are objectively good. Trolls are bottom feeders.

    9/10 for the game though...

Clearly the people reviewing this are trolling. I wouldn't give the game a 10 myself, but it is a solid 8.5. If you like rougelike gamesClearly the people reviewing this are trolling. I wouldn't give the game a 10 myself, but it is a solid 8.5. If you like rougelike games that have a sense of progression like Rogue Legacy (as opposed to Enter the Gungeon) while also incorporating some excellent platforming, that's oozing with charm, this game is for you. Tribute games nails it with their newest release. Full Review »
