The gameplay is a sort of mix between a Telltale game and a "walking simulator" and the results are incredible!

Basically if you like mystery, exploration and dialogue choices this is the game for you!

Firewatch is a perfect example of how to capture the imagination of story driven games, while providing the audiences with griping dialogue and compelling characters. I had a very enjoyable experience with this game. Although it only tool 7 hours to complete it was something special and my favorite game of 2016 so far.

I think it's not the game is average, but it's the interpretation and limited experience of people is. Anyone who is "disappointed" about the ending has a lot of learning to do about life.

It's a fantastic story driven experience with some of the best voice acting I've heard in a while.

Also. the ending, critisized by some, worked well in my opinion. It felt right. There doesn't need to be a payout or reward or whatever else some might have been expecting. In live, not everything pays out. Sometimes all you get are lessons learned.

In any way, fantastic game. :) If you like well told stories then this is up there amongst the best.

Most of the negative reviewers were disappointed because of how the story turned out, but in fact if it turned out any other way (to meet the average player's expectations) I wouldn't have been writing this review. The game is exactly what it's supposed to be, it's realistic, and conveys it's story perfectly.

I completed this in one sitting, and for about 4.5 hours I was completely isolated from the real world and couldn't move away from my screen playing. I don't spend too many hours in the day playing games, so I don't remember the last time a game kept me glued to the chair for so long. BUY THIS GAME!

Gameplay is also "subtle", with not a lot interactions so it's kinda a drawback, (not really for people who hate walking simulators) but than you can focus more on story, exploring and embracing the atmosphere. Its an amazing story giving insight to a lonely fire watcher who chose to live in the wilderness far away from any kind of civilization. The artwork in this game is truly relaxing and beautiful.
The game is about 5 hours long if you just straight out play the storyline and if you do care about exploration you will be quite happy given that you have the opportunity to freely wander around

Don´t get me wrong its not an "Open-World" game like you would imagine, its more like a patch-finding and exploring the beauty of the places you are. Sure you could say its open world since you are able to wander around with the only restriction being some tools you need to access some areas but it feels different to other Open World games.

Anyways, i would recommend this game if you like adventure, mystery and/ or a good story with the voices of the "Tell Tale - Walking Dead" stars.

Everyone should play this game. My wife is not a gamer at all, but I am going to ask her to play this. I truly believe she will love it. This game will stick with me for a long time and I will replay it sometime in the future. The farther I get from it, the more I think about it and miss it. For those reviews that say, well the ending sucked, the plot sucked, they were wanting a Halmark movie ending with a ton of twists and turns. This is more like a true life adventure with real people and because of that, it makes it feel all that much more real and that is what makes it amazing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firewatch is story of a interesting, but very average character who goes by the name of Henry.

    Positives:
Hank is very well designed character:
Basically Henry is whatever you want him to be. Developers did fantastic job of leaving it to the players imagination.
The background and the foundation to Henrys story:
They did better job of giving the foundation to the story in less than 10 minutes than some games do in their entirety. (Max Payne didn't do it for me in 3 games)
    Graphics:
Own style of graphics: Not unique, but does the job for me
    Game lenght:
Very compact. In fact so compact that I was impressed by the fact that it gave so many thoughts in my head.
    Story:
D:s and Hanks relationship felt so real, and the things they went through together were simply breathtaking.
The ending was everything I hope for in a game. It left me wanting more of firewatch. More of Henry and Delilah. Together. I think that some people didn´t like for the fact that Hollywood has made a thing called "Happy endings". And as someone who is sick and tired of cliché endings, I really felt something at the end. A bond to the story and their relationship.

    Negatives:
    Story:
In my opinion they could have wrapped up things more nicely (Something could´ve happened to the girls.... Anything else.(I still liked the outcome of the game))
    Game:
Major mistake is the chunk loading and fps dropping (I think it can be patched)
    Climbing was little bit meh.
    Lenght:
Very compact. Could have possibly enjoyed more of it, but who knows.

    To wrap things up:
I think that gameplay experience was great. The fact that I didn´t play it at one go might´ve helped.
Will give 10/10 since it had minor mistakes on some parts. (For the games defence Witcher 3: Wildhunt had minor mistakes and still was the perfect game. I´m not comparing them to one another, but Firewatch was great gaming experience and only if I could I would re-experience it again.

I haven't had so much feelings playing game in years. It was overwhelming experience and after I finished playing it I felt a huge grin on my face.

The visuals are stunning. Color pallets change over the course of the game, but they perfectly capture intensiveness of the game moments while always looking gorgeous.

Firewatch has couple downsides. People already pointed this out but the game is quite short. Also dialog could be easily expanded to have a bit more depth. And unfortunately it doesn't have replay value. Though the downsides sound like not a game problem but more of me selfishly wanting to squeeze this amazing game for more entertainment. And for the replay value, let me just say it's a journey, one time journey, it makes you feel things, and it wouldn't be very effective if it tried to play on the same feeling over and over. You play the game, you remember the game some time later and it gives you warm feelings. Like an adventure with your real life friends. It doesn't have to be relived again to be better.

All in all, it's an amazing game. Maybe 20 euros for a game that you will only play one time sounds a bit too much, but it is worth every single penny, because you are not buying a game, you are buying once in a life time experience.

But I wanted to mention that this game stays with you long after you have finished it. The experience was so immersive, that even 3-4 days after completing it I miss the characters and world it all happened in. I want to go back to my tower, look at the breathtaking view, push my walkie-talkie's button and ask Delilah: "Hey, what's up?" :)

But what I am worried about is a new trend with players complaining about the cost of the game. Since everybody is downloading games on Steam, there are no more physical packages. So that kind of gives a feeling of games and money quickly moving both ways and some players feel that they always have to have a say on this subject. Steam has (too) consumer-friendly refund rules and some players have started to become vile and childish exploiting those rules.

Good example is Firewatch. Some reviewers here say it is too short and it's not worth the asking price. That the "fair" asking price should be 2-3 times lower. How can someone judge if the price for a product is fair or not? If its too expensive don't buy it. If you bought it and didn't like, tough luck. That's life. Then in the future avoid games from the same developer. Same thing with movies and books. If the movie sucked then you don't go to movie theater's website complaining and claiming that instead of 8 bucks the ticket should have cost 2 bucks. If you saw your first Michael Bay movie and you think it was horrible, then suck it up and in the future don't go to another Michael Bay movie. It is that simple.

Is there a manual how to evaluate games? Reading the negative reviews here it seems there is. First and most important criteria must be - more hours of play equals a better game. If a game leaves you a deep impression then whats the difference if play time is 3 hours or 30 hours? My humble opinion is that the value of a game should be measured in the amount of positive emotion not in hours played. So if you didn't like the game, or you didn't understand it then just say so. It is ok to say that you didn't like the game. Complaining about short play time is absurd.

And last but not least - this is a game for adults. By that I mean someone older than 14 :) Main driving force behind this game is a quite layered and somewhat complicated relationship between the main characters. Middle aged and older people are not really into games, that is changing, but slowly. So most reviewers are younger and you can really see that in the users reviews here. This game should be reviewed like a movie or a book. On that scale this game is a full 11 :)

More than a game a work of art, I will never forget this game, for those who do not like the end that is what makes it so special, few games leave you with that feeling of sadness at the end shows the reality you were not a hero Life is very hard and you don't always have a happy movie ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't like to throw around the "if you didn't enjoy it you didn't get it" bit, but in this case it's quite true.
A lot of people's big problem is that the story is cut short and the ending isn't satisfying, but most people don't talk about the psychological, philosophical and moral questions the game raises silently. The story is actually absolutely baffling if you pay close attention to it straight from the beginning. As soon as the game establishes the exposition of how Alzheimer's affects Julia and her loved ones you get a sinking feeling in your heart, something is off, and as soon as you reach Two Forks Lookout, just by looking around the abandoned, boarded up tower you start to feel the weight of utter loneliness and guilt that's on Henry. Throughout the game you always feel Henry's paranoia and self-condemnation, this is basically the game's way of talking about human instincts, behavior and processing something hard. Pulling through a low point in your life and moving on, that's what Henry's story is about. There is also a story of two strangers, who ended up in the middle of nowhere, Delilah is well established in her job of being a firewatch lookout, while Henry is left quite a predicament where he has to pick up the pieces his predecessor left behind and do his job right, all the while Delilah is there on the other end of a radio, always of help. This is a story of how even in a miserable and uncertain situation you can find the right people and through hardships you can always rely on them. The story follows them as they grow closer, to the point where they can only trust each other to get through the hellish horror that is the constant preying pair of eyes watching them and the possible murder plot they accidentally uncover.
The game's story is quite interesting as well, all the way through you feel something watching you, even when the branches rustle in the wind it feels like someone or something is near. There are points during the rising action when everything feels like a supernatural conspiracy, Henry even questions if any of it is real, even if Delilah is real. Henry is disoriented and in distress. The climax comes when you open cave 452's restricted section, somebody tries to lock the door behind you, you delve deeper into the cave and find Brian Goodwin's body. Your heart is beating, you feel the weight of the truth, though it is hard to embrace and some parts of it stay in the dark, some things you just don't want to know the truth behind... The resolution of the story is also quite unconventional, as you don't get to meet Delilah, after all the build up you only get to exchange some heartfelt words with her about the future, which is the continuation of both of their stories, the short dialogue is quite deep and resolves both their stories even if it doesn't seem like much on the surface. Then with the fire raging around the lookout Henry leaves Ol' Shoshone behind. This is an allegory of how his past is burning up, how he is moving on, he is forced to leave his past behind even if he loves it, he is drawn to it. The morality of the cover-up of Brian Goodwin's death, Henry moving on, Delilah's actions and Ned's actions is completely up to the player's interpretation.

The game is a psychological and Philosophical masterpiece.

The world you inhabit is designed fantastically, I felt like I was actually exploring a real place. Firewatch's art direction also boast the game to a whole other level, it's stunning most of the time. I played on the PS4 and it ran fairly poorly, I'm not sure why. There is barely anything going on screen, but the game can't keep up and there are also popups. Another thing I felt could have been better is the movement, it feels really janky at times, which is disappointing considering that's what you do the whole game. Lastly as stated before, the ending loses steam and tries to shoehorn in a secondary plot that doesn't payoff at all. It also goes into a direction that doesn't let it be what it should have been. Firewatch though, is all about the relationship between you and a woman on the other side of a walkie talkie and it's truly moving at some points. Expand

It is a bit horror-ish in places and it's not a good idea to play it while intoxicated. But definitely worth playing if you like games with atmosphere. Because this is atmosphere concentrated.

    Cons:
    - Game length
    - It seems like you can move anywhere, but it is basically limited to paths and surroundings. You are disallowed to go to places that would be clearly reachable in real life. Sometimes it a bit frustrating. I didn't experience any major glitches, unescapable places etc. though.

Tackling some very serious subjects, the game is beautifully directed, I really felt like I was in Henrys shoes and after a short time, I was completely absorbed by the story. There is a lot of plot twist, strong emotional moments and some very creepy parts that made me wish I wasn't playing alone in the dark.

The atmosphere is great, the art style is wonderful and animations are well done. The only thing I could say against the world itself is the lack of animals, you are in the middle of the forest and you encounter very few living creature during the whole game.

I give this game a 9 out of 10 because it kept me searching for answers. I did not want to interrupt this beautiful adventure, I wanted to know more, to know wtf is actually going on. The story, atmosphere, voice acting and the lack of dull moments makes this game a MUST. Campo Santo is an independent developer and this is an example of what gem can be created when you think outside of the box, they hit the bullseye!

I felt the ending was a great, if not bitter-sweet finale. But it was undoubtedly rushed. Characters that ought to have made a visual appearance conveniently left before the game really had a chance to explore them properly and then Firewatch just kind of fizzles out. This is really evidenced by the running time, which is about 4 hours (and I’m being generous there.) Given that the asking price is £15/$20, it’s hard to recommend Firewatch to anyone other than those who truly love a well told story. While I’m really glad I played it and I'm totally torn up about having to give this review a bad ending, I can’t help but feel that there are much better value-for-money games out there right now. Playing Firewatch is like being served the tastiest food in the World and then only being allowed to have a few bites of it before having your plate yanked away and being told to leave the restaurant. At it’s core it is dependant on the dialogue and interaction between Henry and Delilah and both voice actors blow it out of the water and are fantastic. If this key part were poor it would ruin a lot of the game in my opinion. The music is also well done, especially in that the developers knew when to use it and when to keep things silent. The game play itself is actually very fun. It is very linear and there isn’t much difficulty but there is some openness to it. For instance where you go is linear but how you get there is all up to you for the most part. If you want to explore the park feel free, and you really should as there is no time limit on any of the missions. The game is the epitome of “comfy”. I love the outdoors and this game includes great vistas; lots of nature; hiking, climbing; just a great time to be had. The one part that was a bit suspect was going down hills because sometimes just by walking up to a small drop it would just climb down the stone while other times it would force me to press a button. The story itself is also well done. There are times where it can get a bit of horror vibes, a bit of sci-fi vibes, and in the end choose a different approach all together. It kept me guessing in a good way.

I played Firewatch on Linux. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs. There are 6 graphics settings and a v-sync toggle. You can manually save whenever you want and there are also auto saves. There is only one save slot though so you keep overwriting the same file regardless. Alt-Tab didn’t work. The performance was great overall. Like many Unity games that use OpenGL though the GPU usage was all over the map and there were a few drops here and there but they didn’t last more than a few seconds each.

    Game Engine: Unity
    Graphics API: OpenGL
    Disk Space Used: 4.2 GB
    Game Version Played: 1.09

Graphics Settings: all highest; motion blur off; v-sync on; 1920x1080
    GPU Usage: 1-100 %
    VRAM Usage: 1301-2720 MB
    CPU Usage: 11-31 %
    RAM Usage: 2.3-2.9 GB
    Frame Rate: 53-144 FPS

I really enjoyed my time with Firewatch. I wish more walking sim type games would have as high of presentation values; as good of a story and as good of voice acting. It’s few issues were very small and nowhere near hindered my enjoyment. I paid $24.99 CAD for it and that is easily a steal for the fun I had. I finished the game in 3 hours and 53 minutes proving that quality is greater than quantity. It didn’t feel rushed or dragged out.

Throughout the game, you see very touching moments between your radio buddy, Delilah, and your character, Henry. These moments can happen anywhere and at anytime, and they are at the core of this game's way of storytelling. The gameplay is very interesting as well, and it never feels like a walking simulator. In fact, I was always perfectly willing to venture out into the beautiful forest and see where Delilah would assign me to go next. However, the game isn't perfect. In fact, most games I have given a 10 aren't perfect. This games flaw that keeps it from a 10 is it's length. It's only about 4 hours long, so it's a good game for people who want a short experience, but not if you were looking forward to, at most, a 10 hour game.
Overall, Firewatch is a game that I would recommend to pretty much anyone, unless you want to play something longer. Either way, there's no denying this game is excellent. 9/10.

I only just finished Firewatch half an hour ago and in all honesty I don't actually know how to review this. On an overall level the game is a masterpiece, on a mechanical level the game is a mess. The reason I don't know how to review it is because I simply don't know if the mechanical part counts... Firewatch does something strange and manages to pull off it's entire narrative while only showing five moving characters. First is the main character Henry (yes you can see your feet) , three others are shadow, one is a fireman at the end of the game and the other is a tortoise.

Graphical fidelity combined with the games aesthetic give it a straight 10/10 in that department, whenever I see a game pull of it's own unique style so well it's hard to judge it.

Mechanics get a solid 4/10 why am I rating it so well then you ask? because for me at least they don't count. If you are the kind of person who plays their games for the fun gameplay this is actually a game you should stay far far away from.

Now the soundtrack is decent, not stellar but decent. It doesn't really need to be though, It fulfills its purpose without actually detaching at all from the rest of the game which in reality is a game about the average, it's not a game about saving the world or surviving a raving axe flailer it's a game about people, which brings me to the next part.

    Characters and plot.
There's little I can say without spoiling the plot. I can firmly say that it was excellent right to the end, then fell slightly flat. The plot plays with your expectations and sucessfully tricked me on multiple occasions. It went from a heavy hearted rom-com to a high stakes game of cat and mouse paranoia then despite handing me the truth it still left me creating conspiracy theories about what was going on. The plot and the characters also weave into one another meshing quite well.
The two main characters are possibly the highlight of this game though. The interaction between Delilah and the main character felt extremely natural without the akwardness of games like Life is strange. For the most part the game is just their interaction. Just them talking making witty banter and occasionally dipping into each others personal lives. The amazing voice acting and mountains apon mountains of branching dialog (that do affect the ending btw) are what gave this game it's score.

Subjectively this game does not come much higher than its' objective rating. The company responsible for making it recently came off from helping with telltales The Walking Dead and it honestly feels like the rebuilt telltales formula from the ground up and did it a whole lot better.

    So final score : 8 or 10
yeah 8 OR 10. I really don't know how to rate this game. It has no pretense of being the next triple A blockbuster and I don't think it should be judged in the same categories but I do think there are things it could have done better but almost all err on the side of mechanical.
If you are a gameplay sort of gamer and can't play a game just for the narrative then stay clear, if you enjoy a damn good story then here you go.

Expand

Though much of the game exists on inflexible rails that keep you moving forward through various story corridors, I found myself stopping at points to wonder about where the game was taking me, theorizing often in a short amount of time about how things might ultimately come together. Right to the game's final moments and in the best way possible, I felt positioned by the developers in such a way to wonder about what comes next without ever being certain of anything. This game has been described as being like playing a great book, and I'll agree with that. Great for anyone who enjoys an edge-of-your-seat story dripping with mystery. Will play again, definitely. During the few hours I played it, I felt almost as if I really was wandering through the wilderness of Wyoming, stopping for a moment to enjoy the sunlight trickling through the trees or watch a sunset dye the sky a brilliant shade of crimson.

What it lacks in traditional gameplay, Firewatch more than makes up for in its beautiful environments, superb voice acting, and great storytelling.

I enjoyed exploring Firewatch's world, with all of its beautiful scenery, and found navigation with its compass and map to be mostly straightforward—although I did get lost occasionally, leading to a few moments of frustration.

Henry's conversations with Delilah were a major highlight for me. The well-written dialogue made for uniquely human moments and the clever humor had me cracking a smile on more than one occasion.

A lot of other reviewers have cited issues with the game's brevity and less-than-satisfying ending. I wasn't bothered by the game's short length as I felt that it had plenty offer despite it, but the ending did feel a little rushed. The game's opening scenes do a good job of gradually building a sense of unease, but once things begin to come to a head, the game quickly reveals its secret and wraps things up.

Without giving away any spoilers, the ending does feel a little anti-climactic after all of the suspense the game builds leading up to it, but in my opinion, Firewatch is still well worth playing despite that.

Firewatch is an excellent example of what a game can be. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story.

This game definitely belongs to the genre of interactive cinema. To do this, she has all the components of success in this genre: a non-trivial plot with all the relying on complications and outcomes, high-quality, and even fully voiced dialogs with the ability to choose answer options and a beautiful visual design.

In the story, the protagonist, a man under 45, after his wife’s serious illness, unable to bear such a shock next to her, is sent to work as an observer at a fire tower in Wyoming National Park. This is seasonal work, that is, he has about three months to understand himself and the situation, to think about life in peace and quiet. There is nobody around him, only on the horizon you can see another tower, where his boss Delaila works. He never saw her and knows only her voice, because all that connects them is a working walkie-talkie. They often communicate, get to know each other better, begin to trust each other with some personal details. In parallel, our character travels around the district, carrying out various everyday tasks of the leadership.

It sounds quite pastoral, but don’t think that this is some kind of nerdy with dialogs, such as: “Today the weather is beautiful, isn't it?”. The screenwriter or screenwriters of the game are very cool, like the voice actors. Honestly, I really liked it. Moreover, I specifically tried to maximally prolong each dialogue so that it was almost by chance to find out some new details about the main characters or the space surrounding them. For those who still think that this is some kind of tediousness, I inform you that by the middle of the game the plot begins to throw up a detective line for itself, and behind it is almost a thriller! Around the heroes, strange, inexplicable events begin to occur and the player is invited to figure out what is happening. I will not go into details to prevent spoilers. Everything is seasoned with strong household dramas of the main characters.

The main disappointment of the game is that it is rather short. However, this may be good. Tightening the plot, the developers risked making the players bored, and so it all worked out just right, very seamlessly. Heroes made me empathize with them and this is wonderful. I really did not care when I selected the answer options in the dialogs of the final scene. As, in fact, throughout the game.

Yes, over time, I had a few questions for the plot, but immediately after the game I had extremely positive impressions. 9/10

Creating a convincing and visually appealing world is no longer a hinderance as studios invest a lot of money and effort in games. Despite the advancements in technology and scope of games the core objective of it remains telling a compelling story. Firewatch is a game which does'n have a huge scope and scale but manages to tell an intimate and heartfelt story.Developer Campo Santo has crafted a game which feels fresh and is also a welcome respite from bloated video games.

    Story of Firewatch

Firewatch tells the story of a fire lookout named henry at Shoshone National Forrest. Henry takes up this job to escape from his troubled marriage and life. Henry has a supervisor called Delilah with whom he interacts over a walkie talkie. Over the course of the game both of them encounter strange situations which are part of the overall mystery. The prologue of firewatch reveals Henry's past which reveals his relationship with his Alzheimer stricken wife.

Firewatch tells a intimate story with strong character progression

Firewatch manages to weave a compelling yet intimate story around it's characters. It's a effective retrospective of human behaviour and it's traits in the event of adversity. Escape is a common theme in firewatch where all the characters are running from their problems. Henry is not as much interested in his new job as much he is in running away from his troubles. Delilah drinks a lot and though not confirmed she is also running from her troubles. A Father character in firewatch (part of the mystery)is also running from something which I will not reveal. Henry's escapade as a fire lookout mirrors his intent to right the wrongs he has regret over.

    Firewatch has excellent world building

The world building in firewatch engages you with the dialogue driven story to the far reaches of Shoshone national forrest. You believe in the world and can identify with these characters. Both Henry and Delilah engage into conversations and dialogues which acts as tools for character progression. Even having not met before Henry and Delilah develop intimacy through these conversations. Even with a limited scope of the world these characters exists in everything feels fleshed out and purposeful. Henry's escapades as a fire lookout are surprisingly nuanced and fun. You feel like you are in the forrest with these people navigating through the eerie silence of the forrest landscapes.

Firewatch has a unique visual style

Firewatch feels like a painting with oversaturated colour palette spread over a beautiful canvas. Green Trees and grass basks in the morning sun & light giving us mix of green and orange colours. Everything feels realistic and stylistic but filled with whole lot of optimism.

    fire watch

    Gameplay is mundane but fun

Most of the tasks Henry takes up come from Delilah.Henry treks this terrain investigating trouble making teens and looking for missing people. Interactions with object is also simple with no complex key combinations required. The dialogue system is much like what it is in RPG games with your answers deciding the course of your interaction. Though the interactions are long they do not rely on heavy expositions. Gameplay mechanics are designed in spirit with what a fire lookout needs to do as a daily work.

Music helps in the World building

The background score of firewatch helps in setting up the mood & environment of the game. It evokes the ambiguity and uncertainty spread around the premise. When Henry is near an objective we get a pacing in the music. When he is disappointed we get a slow track of country side music.

    Conclusion

Fire watch is a daring step towards reinventing the storytelling in video games. It does that with only handful of characters and effective world building. While firewatch is short in length it's length is long enough to convincingly narrate it's story. Studio Campo Santo in it's debut game has set expectations for both big and small games in terms of storytelling

The game does tense and foreboding very well, especially when things start to get entangled; I kept looking behind me in some scenes. The Goodwin's story was heartbreaking, and it made a silly beginning serious and somber as the game went on.

    I loved seeing the scenery while exploring, but sometimes it felt like i was ready for the next part already with a long walk ahead. I wish the pictures I took had a little bit more meaning, but i loved seeing them during the credits.     - It has great soundtrack;
    - Unique and beautiful exploration map;
    - Gives the player the seat of the continuation for the story;

    - Lack of physical interaction with
    other people (you basically spend the whole game alone and talking to your friend on the radio);
    - Final could be better;

    => VERDICT:
The Verdict is that the conversations, the landscapes, the trails, the unfolding of the facts, everything makes this game extremely unique and bordering on perfection, and it definitely leaves a mark on the player, which makes us reflect on relationships, on choices, about empathy, and the dialogues are great together with the voices of the characters, making you get very involved in the story, and in addition to all that, the game still gives you a range of emotions. Not meeting other people and breaking expectations from the end it weighs a lot, so the game is not perfect, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s exceptional, and a masterpiece tremendously impactful from start to finish.
