Firewatch is an excellent game. While the developers did some pretty scummy stuff about the whole PewDiePie situation, the focus shouldn't be taken off how great this game is. The Dialogue is amazing. The story is thrilling. And to be honest, I really like the ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and I think it deserves more praise.

As an adult, I really enjoyed this game. It was short but sweet. I was genuinely scared during lots of it and kept looking behind me while traversing the forest. It's a somber game overall. The voice acting and plot are realistic and top notch.

Very interesting and innovative game. I got drawn into the game pretty quick and kept wandering until the end. Short game as can be done in few hours, but well worth it. Like watching a movie, but somehow directing it too.

What an amazing adventure it was - it sucked me right in. The ending was a disappointment though. I expected something else. But it was all right most of the time. And the game isn't too long - I like that since I don't have much time for video games these days.

It was like an interactive seven-hour movie. Nice humor of main characters. Nice story about one summer.
Not fully open world, but for this type of game it's enough.

An incredibly well made game, that I suggest every gamer who has just a tiny bit of good taste and sense of quality should try. The story is well told and very intriguing. The only reason the game doesn't get 10 in rating is because it is a one time play through. At least in my opinion. But truly it is an amazing game Panic. Inc has created here :) Highly Recommend it...

-Background Music (7): There are hardly any music through the gameplay, what you heard is the sound of nature or the existence of yourself.

-Plot (6): Many folks say that the game has a **** ending. THAT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU EXPLAIN THE STORY. Personally thinking, the story is pretty intense except the ending. And it lack of explanation or predictive things we expected. But overall the story itself is fine. Not satisfying but fine. Consider it is an indie.

-Performance (7): I think my computer's spec is way higher than the recommendation. But the framerate sometimes drop to 40 fps. Considering there's nothing GPU intense scene, I think this is due to poor optimization. But overall it is fine.

-Control (8): There's no unresponsive control. And the overall control design is fine.

    -Pros:
//The comm system. It's very creative. And I enjoy the deep dialogue. And it's an important element in the game.
//The entire firewatch concept is nice. A place without crowd and living with natural.
//There're many thing trying to express during the gameplay. I think you should try it yourself and you will know what I'm talking about.

    -Cons:
//There're only one story and the dialogue you choose doesn't effect anything at all. Maybe it's because I played a few visual novel before. Then the dialogue may show nothing to some gamer.
//To tell the truth, I don't spend much of time exploring. But the devs use the map just for story telling, which is kind of pity.
//The lack of interactive around the environment and the collection. There are few things you can take, or it's meaningless to take it.

-Overall: I will suggest you to play this game. It's kind of refreshing and creative.

Every piece of dialogue between Henry and Delilah was something to look forward to as they conversed about the hardships of life. Through this, Firewatch explores the degradation of relationships and the tendency for escapism. This is accompanied by a very fitting ambient soundtrack and an occasional dose of wit and comedy. I thought the resolution to the mystery/thriller aspect was a bit contrived, and perhaps the setting could've felt that more authentic if there was more wildlife and things to see and interact with, but on the whole I found Firewatch to be a fulfilling experience. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent game for the non-gamers and gamers alike. It requires a certain maturity and attention span to play. Most cellphone-addicted teenagers wouldn't find this very interesting. It's a very short game, which is its best strength: it's great for casual gamers who want a fun experience without too much time commitment, but also a quick change of pace for most hardcore gamers out there. But if you're someone who wants a lot of content out of his game, you should probably skip this. This is all about the ambiance and the mystery.

As someone who hasn't played a great many story-driven single player games, I found myself interested in this one. I didn't feel overwhelmed with things to do, because it's driven by a single "quest" every day, and you have a friendly voice guiding you. The mystery is effective. The ending is slightly disappointing, and you'd have hoped of at least finding a picture of Delilah in her tower or something. When I saw that she wasn't there, I started thinking it had all been a lie, until I found her drawing. So the mystery does keep going until the very end.

The biggest flaw with this game is how you can't go past certain objects and terrain elevation that looks like you easily could. It takes away from the immersion tremendously. The small list of actions gets repetitive as well. I would have liked to see a little bit of extra content/hidden areas that aren't related to the main story, and having the opportunity to explore the area that you can see a little more would have made this an absolutely amazing game.

Despite its flaws, it's a gorgeous game with great voice acting and an effective, realistic mystery. Recommended.

The game plays a bit differently from what I expected going in. But the story kept my full attention, and the experience leaves me pining for more. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, and I truly hope to see more from Campo Santo in the future, but perhaps next time they could make their game a bit longer.

Tackling some very serious subjects, the game is beautifully directed, I really felt like I was in Henrys shoes and after a short time, I was completely absorbed by the story. There is a lot of plot twist, strong emotional moments and some very creepy parts that made me wish I wasn't playing alone in the dark.

The atmosphere is great, the art style is wonderful and animations are well done. The only thing I could say against the world itself is the lack of animals, you are in the middle of the forest and you encounter very few living creature during the whole game.

I give this game a 9 out of 10 because it kept me searching for answers. I did not want to interrupt this beautiful adventure, I wanted to know more, to know wtf is actually going on. The story, atmosphere, voice acting and the lack of dull moments makes this game a MUST. Campo Santo is an independent developer and this is an example of what gem can be created when you think outside of the box, they hit the bullseye!

Most of the negative reviewers were disappointed because of how the story turned out, but in fact if it turned out any other way (to meet the average player's expectations) I wouldn't have been writing this review. The game is exactly what it's supposed to be, it's realistic, and conveys it's story perfectly.

I completed this in one sitting, and for about 4.5 hours I was completely isolated from the real world and couldn't move away from my screen playing. I don't spend too many hours in the day playing games, so I don't remember the last time a game kept me glued to the chair for so long. BUY THIS GAME!

This game goes all the way to 11, on the scale of 10 of course :) I think all the positive reviews have said everything there is to say about this game, so I won't add much in that department. But I wanted to mention that this game stays with you long after you have finished it. The experience was so immersive, that even 3-4 days after completing it I miss the characters and world it all happened in. I want to go back to my tower, look at the breathtaking view, push my walkie-talkie's button and ask Delilah: "Hey, what's up?" :)

But what I am worried about is a new trend with players complaining about the cost of the game. Since everybody is downloading games on Steam, there are no more physical packages. So that kind of gives a feeling of games and money quickly moving both ways and some players feel that they always have to have a say on this subject. Steam has (too) consumer-friendly refund rules and some players have started to become vile and childish exploiting those rules.

Good example is Firewatch. Some reviewers here say it is too short and it's not worth the asking price. That the "fair" asking price should be 2-3 times lower. How can someone judge if the price for a product is fair or not? If its too expensive don't buy it. If you bought it and didn't like, tough luck. That's life. Then in the future avoid games from the same developer. Same thing with movies and books. If the movie sucked then you don't go to movie theater's website complaining and claiming that instead of 8 bucks the ticket should have cost 2 bucks. If you saw your first Michael Bay movie and you think it was horrible, then suck it up and in the future don't go to another Michael Bay movie. It is that simple.

Is there a manual how to evaluate games? Reading the negative reviews here it seems there is. First and most important criteria must be - more hours of play equals a better game. If a game leaves you a deep impression then whats the difference if play time is 3 hours or 30 hours? My humble opinion is that the value of a game should be measured in the amount of positive emotion not in hours played. So if you didn't like the game, or you didn't understand it then just say so. It is ok to say that you didn't like the game. Complaining about short play time is absurd.

And last but not least - this is a game for adults. By that I mean someone older than 14 :) Main driving force behind this game is a quite layered and somewhat complicated relationship between the main characters. Middle aged and older people are not really into games, that is changing, but slowly. So most reviewers are younger and you can really see that in the users reviews here. This game should be reviewed like a movie or a book. On that scale this game is a full 11 :)

A spoiler-free note on the ending, I've seen many criticisms of the plot and its conclusion, but almost all of those criticisms ignore every note from the prologue and the characters' development. From the very start, as you craft Henry's backstory and get to know Delilah, Firewatch makes it very clear that there are no clean and easy paths in life. The sort of plot that most people seem to have wanted would have conflicted jarringly with Firewatch's entire philosophy.

Firewatch is certainly not for everyone, it wasn't necessarily even great for me. But considering how many books that I've started and never finished it's worth pointing out that I finished Firewatch, and did not regret the time put in.

Don´t get me wrong its not an "Open-World" game like you would imagine, its more like a patch-finding and exploring the beauty of the places you are. Firewatch's art direction also boast the game to a whole other level, it's stunning most of the time. I played on the PS4 and it ran fairly poorly, I'm not sure why. There is barely anything going on screen, but the game can't keep up and there are also popups. Another thing I felt could have been better is the movement, it feels really janky at times, which is disappointing considering that's what you do the whole game. Lastly as stated before, the ending loses steam and tries to shoehorn in a secondary plot that doesn't payoff at all. It also goes into a direction that doesn't let it be what it should have been. Firewatch though, is all about the relationship between you and a woman on the other side of a walkie talkie and it's truly moving at some points. Expand

Firewatch is basically like an adult novel that captures the true essence of storytelling in games. Throughout the game, you see very touching moments between your radio buddy, Delilah, and your character, Henry. These moments can happen anywhere and at anytime, and they are at the core of this game's way of storytelling. The gameplay is very interesting as well, and it never feels like a walking simulator. In fact, I was always perfectly willing to venture out into the beautiful forest and see where Delilah would assign me to go next. However, the game isn't perfect. In fact, most games I have given a 10 aren't perfect. This games flaw that keeps it from a 10 is it's length. It's only about 4 hours long, so it's a good game for people who want a short experience, but not if you were looking forward to, at most, a 10 hour game.
Overall, Firewatch is a game that I would recommend to pretty much anyone, unless you want to play something longer. Either way, there's no denying this game is excellent. 9/10.

I only just finished Firewatch half an hour ago and in all honesty I don't actually know how to review this. On an overall level the game is a masterpiece, on a mechanical level the game is a mess. The reason I don't know how to review it is because I simply don't know if the mechanical part counts... Firewatch does something strange and manages to pull off it's entire narrative while only showing five moving characters. First is the main character Henry (yes you can see your feet) , three others are shadow, one is a fireman at the end of the game and the other is a tortoise.

Graphical fidelity combined with the games aesthetic give it a straight 10/10 in that department, whenever I see a game pull of it's own unique style so well it's hard to judge it.

Mechanics get a solid 4/10 why am I rating it so well then you ask? because for me at least they don't count. If you are the kind of person who plays their games for the fun gameplay this is actually a game you should stay far far away from.

Now the soundtrack is decent, not stellar but decent. It doesn't really need to be though, It fulfills its purpose without actually detaching at all from the rest of the game which in reality is a game about the average, it's not a game about saving the world or surviving a raving axe flailer it's a game about people, which brings me to the next part.

    Characters and plot.
There's little I can say without spoiling the plot. I can firmly say that it was excellent right to the end, then fell slightly flat. The plot plays with your expectations and sucessfully tricked me on multiple occasions. It went from a heavy hearted rom-com to a high stakes game of cat and mouse paranoia then despite handing me the truth it still left me creating conspiracy theories about what was going on. The plot and the characters also weave into one another meshing quite well.
The two main characters are possibly the highlight of this game though. The interaction between Delilah and the main character felt extremely natural without the akwardness of games like Life is strange. For the most part the game is just their interaction. Just them talking making witty banter and occasionally dipping into each others personal lives. The amazing voice acting and mountains apon mountains of branching dialog (that do affect the ending btw) are what gave this game it's score.

Subjectively this game does not come much higher than its' objective rating. The company responsible for making it recently came off from helping with telltales The Walking Dead and it honestly feels like the rebuilt telltales formula from the ground up and did it a whole lot better.

    So final score : 8 or 10
yeah 8 OR 10. I really don't know how to rate this game. It has no pretense of being the next triple A blockbuster and I don't think it should be judged in the same categories but I do think there are things it could have done better but almost all err on the side of mechanical.
If you are a gameplay sort of gamer and can't play a game just for the narrative then stay clear, if you enjoy a damn good story then here you go.

I felt the ending was a great, if not bitter-sweet finale. But it was undoubtedly rushed. Characters that ought to have made a visual appearance conveniently left before the game really had a chance to explore them properly and then Firewatch just kind of fizzles out. This is really evidenced by the running time, which is about 4 hours (and I’m being generous there.) Given that the asking price is £15/$20, it’s hard to recommend Firewatch to anyone other than those who truly love a well told story. While I’m really glad I played it and I'm totally torn up about having to give this review a bad ending, I can’t help but feel that there are much better value-for-money games out there right now. Playing Firewatch is like being served the tastiest food in the World and then only being allowed to have a few bites of it before having your plate yanked away and being told to leave the restaurant. You actually feel that you are playing the role of Hank (He doesn't like that name) through the choices that you make. Tho voice acting is absolutely amazing and the art style reminds me of a Disney film (Kinda like UP) aesthetically. The only knock on the game is the pseudo-open world. There were times where I could not cross a rock because of an invisible wall, but luckily this wasn't very annoying. I managed to finish it in just under 4 hours or so, but I have the feeling that there is ALOT that I did not manage to see in my first playthrough, such as how the relationship with Delilah would have turned out had I perhaps been more harsh on her.

Is Firewatch worth the £15 price tag? If you are someone who judges the price of a game on it's gametime, then maybe not. But if you value the experience of a game and how it makes you feel more than game time, then £15 is a near steal for the sheer emotional rollercoaster that it will manage to take you on in just 4 hours.

Note:This is the first review I have ever given for a game, so forgive me if I done a shoddy job of it.

Right to the game's final moments and in the best way possible, I felt positioned by the developers in such a way to wonder about what comes next without ever being certain of anything. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firewatch is story of a interesting, but very average character who goes by the name of Henry.

    Positives:
Hank is very well designed character:
Basically Henry is whatever you want him to be. Developers did fantastic job of leaving it to the players imagination.
The background and the foundation to Henrys story:
They did better job of giving the foundation to the story in less than 10 minutes than some games do in their entirety. (Max Payne didn't do it for me in 3 games)
    Graphics:
Own style of graphics: Not unique, but does the job for me
    Game lenght:
Very compact. In fact so compact that I was impressed by the fact that it gave so many thoughts in my head.
    Story:
D:s and Hanks relationship felt so real, and the things they went through together were simply breathtaking.
The ending was everything I hope for in a game. It left me wanting more of firewatch. More of Henry and Delilah. Together. I think that some people didn´t like for the fact that Hollywood has made a thing called "Happy endings". And as someone who is sick and tired of cliché endings, I really felt something at the end. A bond to the story and their relationship.

    Negatives:
    Story:
In my opinion they could have wrapped up things more nicely (Something could´ve happened to the girls.... Anything else.(I still liked the outcome of the game))
    Game:
Major mistake is the chunk loading and fps dropping (I think it can be patched)
    Climbing was little bit meh.
    Lenght:
Very compact. Could have possibly enjoyed more of it, but who knows.

    To wrap things up:
I think that gameplay experience was great. The fact that I didn´t play it at one go might´ve helped.
Will give 10/10 since it had minor mistakes on some parts. (For the games defence Witcher 3: Wildhunt had minor mistakes and still was the perfect game. I´m not comparing them to one another, but Firewatch was great gaming experience and only if I could I would re-experience it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into Firewatch with no expectations other than beautiful scenery and the game being story driven. Cool.

I started off totally engrossed into the game, the nature of the relationship with Julia, but I found myself curious as to where things would lead to with Delilah. Then the mystery kicks in. I found myself thinking a bit of the TV show LOST at times. After an hour or two the mystery is revealed, and it seems like it was rushed, a bit of a cop-out as well.

I don't know how to make this game better, but I will say that I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second half.

This is a game well worth playing, especially due to it being a short game, but I wouldn't recommend it at the $20 it's for on Steam. I think it's super polished in controls and scenery, but the story is too short and a bit rushed. $10-$15 seems more appropriate.

Edit: I'm changing my score from 7 to an 8. The further removed I am from this game the more I think about it and remember it fondly.

But, the story unfolds organically with your exploration and doesn't leave you wandering the park aimlessly for too long. Those who prefer solitary pursuits will enjoy the minimalist ambience, and there is just about enough to keep a demanding nit like me entertained. The world is beautifully rendered, the routes wonderfully realised and the voice acting is simply sublime.
Throughout the game there's a prevailing feeling of something unseen up to no good which will have you forever looking over your shoulder. Unfortunately after such an eerie and well-crafted buildup of suspense, the ending was somewhat of a busted flush and also failed to tie up all of the loose ends.
The game is also extremely short, but I felt that the concept would be tired had more been squeezed from it.
At times it feels that indie games of this type are overly ponderous, and made ambiguous in an attempt to seem thought-provoking. Firewatch is refreshingly grounded in this respect. Perfect to get in the sales and to play through on a Saturday afternoon.

In my case I had way too much fun exploring the area and interacting with objects, so I ended up putting way more time into it.

You play as Henry, a married man who's wife had a mental disease and he couldn't do anything to help, so her parents decided to take care of her as they didnt trust Henry for that.
Henry then took on a job as firewatch, mainly to try and run away from those problems.
In his first day at the job, Henry is called by Delilah, his new "boss", through radio. The game then starts, and Delilah sends you on missions around the area. And thats basically what you do through the game.
It doesnt sound like much at first, but the exploration part is really enjoyable. It actually made me wanna get a job as a firewatch just so I could get out of the big city and explore the wilderness. And maybe, just maybe, I would get a fun boss like Delilah to order me around.

OH GOD, DELILAH! HOW I LOVE YOU SO!!
Delilah is the main reason I enjoyed this game so much. She keeps you company while you explore the forest.
She is a woman with a fun personality, so its hard to get bored when she is talking.
The voice actors did an amazing job. Delilah and Henry conversations really feels natural.
I wish the game was longer so I could listen to more of their dialogues!

But alas, thats pretty much all the game has going for it. So you will either love it or hate it.
There is a plot, but in my opinion it was one of the worse cases of "wasted potential" I seen in a game.
Wont talk much about it so I dont spoil anything. Just dont think much about it and enjoy the ride.
The game is short but very comfy, so buy it and play during the weekend. It will be worth it.

Expand

I haven't had so much feelings playing game in years. It was overwhelming experience and after I finished playing it I felt a huge grin on my face.

The visuals are stunning. Color pallets change over the course of the game, but they perfectly capture intensiveness of the game moments while always looking gorgeous.

Firewatch has couple downsides. People already pointed this out but the game is quite short. Also dialog could be easily expanded to have a bit more depth. And unfortunately it doesn't have replay value. Though the downsides sound like not a game problem but more of me selfishly wanting to squeeze this amazing game for more entertainment. And for the replay value, let me just say it's a journey, one time journey, it makes you feel things, and it wouldn't be very effective if it tried to play on the same feeling over and over. You play the game, you remember the game some time later and it gives you warm feelings. Like an adventure with your real life friends. It doesn't have to be relived again to be better.

All in all, it's an amazing game. Maybe 20 euros for a game that you will only play one time sounds a bit too much, but it is worth every single penny, because you are not buying a game, you are buying once in a life time experience.

No, I was actually sick, and didn't have much better to do.

And, may I say, it was most certainly worth it.

Now, despite being of the same genre, unimaginatively titled "walking simulator" by some (which i think is biased and has a negative connotation out of the starting gate) and having the same musical composer, this title and Gone Home are succinctly different.

By the way, that composer, Chris Remo, really knows how to create atmosphere with a limited but soulful instrumental palette.

Anyways, Firewatch is beautifully rendered and colored, and does a bang-up job capturing the midwest with an art style that isn't too samey, even as you walk through trees, trees, and more trees. Its environments are built well and I found that it was fairly easy to navigate if you've read a map before, (I turned off the player indicator for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles/to test my navigation skills) though I am not a fan of only contextual jumping. Let me jump on things that look jump-onable, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥it.
That being said there is a reasonable amount of environmental obstacles that you need to traverse, and they are perfectly reasonable and flow well with navigation.

Now, if you read my review of Gone Home, you will know what matters most to me in this interactive story experience is just that: the story.
I found myself easily falling into the protagonist Henry's shoes as he is a bit like me, though considerably older, (and in terms of hobbies I'd probably be more like Brian Goodwin). I found his story at the beginning heartbreaking, but enough to bring you up to speed, and the dialog/story options were and interesting feature, though I have a feeling all roads lead to Rome, so to speak.
I really felt the connection between Delilah and Henry as well, very well acted and the amount of dialog choices was plentiful enough to feel like you are actually influencing the conversation. In fact, early on I made a comment that made Delilah annoyed and leave her radio for a second, and I felt genuinely bad for having reacted the way I did.

I felt the story arced well at the beginning, but once it hit the turning point, where things got weirder, it lost its stride. Soon weeks and months were passing, and everything was a rush, and I needed to run all over the map to chase a mystery I didn't really feel was pulling together all that well. It was a lot like putting together a puzzle with no idea what the outcome will be, and being spoonfed pieces that don't fit together, and in the end it came together into something you wholeheartedly didn't expect and didn't really feel satisfied with.

The big reveal, the climax, wasn't really much of one. It left me depressed mostly because the ending to Henry and Delilah's relationship plotline ended in a somewhat lazy way. The mystery started out like it was Scully and Mulder exploring an enigma in a remote location in one of the better early episodes of The X-Files, but ended like one of the crappy episodes without Mulder in the 8th season, where the two cynics leave things completely unfinished.

Now, despite my complaints, I do think if you loved Gone Home, or enjoy interactive storytelling games (or *spits* walking simulators) you should play this game. It is more of a game than Gone Home, as I didn't find myself bored, or running through locations just to unlock the next story bit. Its also a lot more engaging to play with the conversation with a living voice, which you choose your words for. But, unfortunately, I don't think it is worth the price. I would disagree with the price of Gone Home as well, but I got it in a humble bundle, and this is coming longer after I finished that game than my review of it. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that. So, buy it on sale and play it. Love the characters and the location and even the gameplay.

But don't expect a great ending.

The entry only prepares mentally prior to the game, but is well done in my opinion - already written above, a good book could hardly have started better.

The game itself would have still potential in terms of "side quests" because things unfortunately "hunted" only through the main quest, which is a shame, because the world itself is very beautiful and harmonious.

I'm impressed by the fabulous speakers! They bring at any time over the mood without fumble. The many possibilities of conversation (dialogue tree) leaves little to be desired, because if a conversation is reached, not dull the next play, but reference to the already conducted talks - stunning performance at the storyboard!

Technically the game is okay - animations operate smoothly and broadly only minor blunders. Unfortunately, some times my graphics drivers crashed, what first is an indication to me that here trifles with graphic engine are not quite round.

The price (€ 19.99) is justified only because of the good speakers - hopefully they have been well rewarded for it.

Conclusion: I had more a game with Fire Watcher quests and sidequests hoped, but received a outstanding coherent Mystery Adventure.

I think the reason so many people are upset with this game is because of how they are used to all these Grandiose endings which in this games case would have meant a revelation of some big conspiracy or something along those lines. However anybody who actually felt the game as they played it and didn't just spend their time thinking forward to the possible explanations of the many questions the game created who have realised that this game is way to Human to end in any kind of Epic manner. This is a game about escapism and its futility. The game serving as both his physical Haven and a metaphor for his psychological one. The which started small then grew into an roaring beast was his Demons and problems back home which he could only every distract himself from but could never get rid of. always lingering in the back of his mind increasing in presence until it was once again brought to the forefront of his thoughts. This goes for all the characters in this game who are all on some escapist type situation as well. As for people complaining that Henry never got to meet Delilah, I honestly think it was better off this way. Imagine how horribly typical it would have been for Henry to meet Delilah, fall in love, and go off with her. The games purpose was too show the futility of escapism and how Delilah was only ever an escape for Henry and how the real woman in his life was Julia his wife back home. A happy ending between the two would have been i completed conflict with what the game was meant to represent. As for him never seeing her in general, I quiet liked that because it leaves Delilah seeming like some sort of perpetual mystery which only made her more interesting. Expand

Creating a convincing and visually appealing world is no longer a hinderance as studios invest a lot of money and effort in games. Despite the advancements in technology and scope of games the core objective of it remains telling a compelling story. Firewatch is a game which does'n have a huge scope and scale but manages to tell an intimate and heartfelt story.Developer Campo Santo has crafted a game which feels fresh and is also a welcome respite from bloated video games.

    Story of Firewatch

Firewatch tells the story of a fire lookout named henry at Shoshone National Forrest. Henry takes up this job to escape from his troubled marriage and life. Henry has a supervisor called Delilah with whom he interacts over a walkie talkie. Over the course of the game both of them encounter strange situations which are part of the overall mystery. The prologue of firewatch reveals Henry's past which reveals his relationship with his Alzheimer stricken wife.

Firewatch tells a intimate story with strong character progression

Firewatch manages to weave a compelling yet intimate story around it's characters. It's a effective retrospective of human behaviour and it's traits in the event of adversity. Escape is a common theme in firewatch where all the characters are running from their problems. Henry is not as much interested in his new job as much he is in running away from his troubles. Delilah drinks a lot and though not confirmed she is also running from her troubles. A Father character in firewatch (part of the mystery)is also running from something which I will not reveal. Henry's escapade as a fire lookout mirrors his intent to right the wrongs he has regret over.

    Firewatch has excellent world building

The world building in firewatch engages you with the dialogue driven story to the far reaches of Shoshone national forrest. You believe in the world and can identify with these characters. Both Henry and Delilah engage into conversations and dialogues which acts as tools for character progression. Even having not met before Henry and Delilah develop intimacy through these conversations. Even with a limited scope of the world these characters exists in everything feels fleshed out and purposeful. Henry's escapades as a fire lookout are surprisingly nuanced and fun. You feel like you are in the forrest with these people navigating through the eerie silence of the forrest landscapes.

Firewatch has a unique visual style

Firewatch feels like a painting with oversaturated colour palette spread over a beautiful canvas. Green Trees and grass basks in the morning sun & light giving us mix of green and orange colours. Everything feels realistic and stylistic but filled with whole lot of optimism.

    fire watch

    Gameplay is mundane but fun

Most of the tasks Henry takes up come from Delilah.Henry treks this terrain investigating trouble making teens and looking for missing people. Interactions with object is also simple with no complex key combinations required. The dialogue system is much like what it is in RPG games with your answers deciding the course of your interaction. Though the interactions are long they do not rely on heavy expositions. Gameplay mechanics are designed in spirit with what a fire lookout needs to do as a daily work.

Music helps in the World building

The background score of firewatch helps in setting up the mood & environment of the game. It evokes the ambiguity and uncertainty spread around the premise. When Henry is near an objective we get a pacing in the music. When he is disappointed we get a slow track of country side music.

    Conclusion

Fire watch is a daring step towards reinventing the storytelling in video games. It does that with only handful of characters and effective world building. While firewatch is short in length it's length is long enough to convincingly narrate it's story. Studio Campo Santo in it's debut game has set expectations for both big and small games in terms of storytelling

In Firewatch you play as a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe.

Firewatch is hands down the best, the most engaging first person walker I have ever played. Something doesn’t let me rate it higher though, and I guess it’s my common sense. [04/2016, p.50]

The look of this game is nothing short of stunning… Each detail is carefully designed and thought out with a charming feel to it overall.

This unconventional game combines strong story, beautiful natural surroundings and fantastically written and played characters. What it lacks in classic adventure mechanics, it makes up in great dialogue system between the main protagonists. [Issue#262]
