The main story quest starts off very slowly.
The dungeons feel like they stretch on endlessly and, in my opinion, are rather tedious and somewhat boring in their design.
It's only when you reach around Level 35 and travel to Coerthas that the story starts to get interesting. It picks up again later when you directly attack the Garleans, etc. That's all good storytelling, but as I said,

    Graphics are a mixed bag.
Customization options for playable characters definitely need improvements, particularly in the areas of facial features, body size (in the case of the Elezen the neck), and long hairstyles.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the nature and creatures in the world. The animals look unnatural, with some having twisted spines and the landscapes sometimes appear a bit colorless and static.

Player housing is great, but I don't like that players are forced to maintain a subscription if they want a proper house instead of just an apartment. Additionally, it's very annoying that you can't place an unlimited number of items and that you can't freely place items on top of other items.

7/10, solid game, but there's plenty of room for improvement.

Good MMO! I'm not exactly a big fan of that monthly subscription fee (sometimes I just want to chill for a weekend and be done with that) but I reckon that is what makes this game possible as it is. There can be some boring quest in the MSQ, but as a whole I think this game is one of the best of its kind. There's a great content diversity and you mmay always have something different to do.

Boring Slogfest. It’s boring. It’s repetitive. It’s not fun. I fall asleep and can’t play for more than a quest at a time. Apparently it gets good after 60+ or more. A Yawn Reborn is not for me.

They seriously wanted to help me and totally understood the question. They had a discussion among themselves and could not decide if you had to drudge through 300 hours of boredom, or if it was more like 500 hours, before the game gets good.

One of the things I appreciate most is the complexity of its story. As you progress through the game, you'll encounter a plethora of memorable characters and engaging plotlines that will keep you invested from start to finish. The battle against Gaius and Nero is just one of many highlights in this tale, and meeting Graha'Tia and exploring the Crystal Tower is an experience that will stay with you long after you've turned off your computer.

But Final Fantasy 14 isn't just about the story – the game offers plenty of other features that make it stand out from the crowd. For one, player housing is rich and fun, providing a space for players to relax and customize to their heart's content.

All in all, A Realm Reborn is a truly captivating game that deserves all the praise it receives. Yes, it may start off a bit slow, but stick with it, and you'll be rewarded with an unforgettable journey that will leave you wanting more.

Anyone who has played through Final Fantasy knows that ARR is almost entirely world-building. Understandably, this can make it seem quite slow-going at the beginning, because you don't really know what's coming next. Especially in today's world, where many people unfortunately have the attention span of a goldfish, it can probably be exhausting to learn so much about the world and read so much.
But already towards the end of this introduction, you can tell that things are getting really exciting and the first characters begin to grow on you. Even supposed spoilers, without wanting to give away too much at this point, like Nero, become more sympathetic, and you realize that there's more going on than meets the eye.
In addition, there are really cool activities like player housing that can be a lot of fun because there are just so many possibilities.
The playable races, while they look pretty good, are relatively boring, I'll admit. They're basically just humans with different ears. More or less. But there are tons of customization options that you can use to create your characters, which I think makes up for it.

While housing is only available for players who stay constantly subbed, it's still an incredible addition to the game. The only downside is that not all players have access to it, which is a shame. You have to be very lucky in order to get one, especially the big houses. Nonetheless, the sheer variety of housing options and the ability to decorate and personalize your home is truly impressive.

The story of A Realm Reborn starts too slow in my opinion, but it gradually builds to an epic conclusion that sets the stage for even greater adventures to come. The characters are engaging, especially the Garlear, and the gameplay is nice.

While there are a few areas that could use improvement, A Realm Reborn is a solid start.

The slow and steady storyline of the first expansion will make you fall in love with the world of Eorzea, and the characters that you'll meet along the way will become your best friends.

But let me tell you, the story gets so much better though near the end of A Realm Reborn. The plot twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat, and the emotional depth of the characters will have you invested in their fates. You'll feel like you're a part of their world, fighting alongside them in epic battles.
Please note though, that this is a story driven mmorpg unlike other mmos like world of warcraft, where the story doesn't really matter and gets retconned every few patches. So it would be really good to actually read what is going on instead of just skipping everything.

Nero is one of my favorite characters in this first expansion, haha.. He's intelligent, witty, and always one step ahead of the game. You'll love him, hate him, and then love him all over again.

The gameplay is top-notch, the graphics are ok enough, you will have tons of customization options, player housing and the soundtrack is one of the best in the business. Whether you're a seasoned MMO player or a newbie, Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn will provide you with hours upon hours of fun and entertainment.

A Realm Reborn is getting an 8 from me, because the story starts rather slow and if you don't know how much better it will get near the end of ARR and onwards, it might feel a little boring at first. Also animal npcs and such look rather weird and the enviroment could use and update. It looks still better than other games, that didn't update their game for almost two decades, but this is of course no excuse for ff.

So, if you're looking for a game that will take you on an unforgettable adventure, Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn is the one for you.

All the typical trappings of an MMO are present -- including premium paywalls, tedious grind, the inability to play your own way or offline, and server issues. Furthermore, while the game features vast open maps, this is dulled by an over-reliance on boring fetch quests. The actual "game" feels more like a checklist of useless busywork than anything else.

Simply put, Final Fantasy XIV does not elevate itself beyond its genre. If you are not a fan of MMOs, Final Fantasy XIV will not change your mind.

Too many negatives! Level design is excellent - but the world is so empty. Monsters look very cool - but drop nothing and very little xp. Story is horrible - boring and too many long cutscenes. Forced dungeons are raids are awful.

I fell for the recent hype. To all the people who says “it gets better” seriously, what is wrong with you? This constant insincerity is what kept me going. IT DOESN’T GET BETTER (a least to the point it serves as a valid argument).

I just finished Shadowbringers 5.5 MSQ, and let me tell you, this is an “interactive Novel” more than it is a video game.

Sure with each expansion the game (novel) gets a little better, in terms of graphics, animations, storytelling, but the CORE of the game doesn’t change, it is still this outdated mmorpg tab targeting, with its main FOCUS on MSQ, which is basically walls of text.

Your quests in order of occurrences is: talk, travel, click objects, kill NPCs, do dungeons/trials/story instances.
They added one different mechanic in Stormblood lol, which is to “click stuff in FPS mode”.

I can count the EPIC moments of the story in one hand! 3 of them were in Havensward and 2 in Shadowbringers (forget RR and SB).

The main focus of this game is the MSQ, but the problem is; the MSQ is 90% fluff pointless writing and storytelling, you could cut out 80% of this writing and still get a concise accurate description of the story, albeit just more on point.

What Square Enix is doing is inflating game time content with more and more text and sloppy animation screens, which I’m not kidding stretches the MSQ than it really needs to be. I’m not even talking about important background build up, I’m talking about content you won’t even remember because it served no purpose in the grand scheme of things. (Anything you wont remember a month from now isn't worth reading about).

Because the MSQ is mainly storytelling, and single player orientated, why not just play better solo video games that are much, much better technically advanced in gameplay, like GTA 5, Witcher 3, red redemption 2, and hundreds of others titles?

There were times I was so desperate to just “play” the game, because there is so few dungeons/trials and killing quests in-between all the walls of text.

One could always pay a story skip potion, but the fact is MSQ is the focus of this game, the endgame is extra stuff. Players and Square have both said that MSQ is the focus of the game, and the more casual player base.

WoW = focuses on repeatable endgame content after a short introductory (and often crap) storyline.

FF14 = 200 hours of MSQ (at minimum) at which point you can cycle through some endgame content and get max ilvl gear fairly easily. But levelling others job/crafts, which has its own questlines seems be one of the most popular things to do.

I won’t be buying Endwalker. People who enjoy reading fluff for hundreds of hours to see one good cutscene here and there, you do that, enjoy! I’ll watch it in a recap YouTube video and do more productive things with my life than read FLUFF MSQ content, which is intentionally used to extend game play time.

“You can always make more money, but you can’t make more time” think about if you’re really enjoying that 200 hours or if you’re only enjoy small amounts of it. Whilst the epic moments were epic, the pain of going through so much unfun content to see it was not worth it. The balance is definitely not there.

Even most fans think the post RR quests are so bad, yet square hasnt fixed it by just removing it for new players by using a short narration cutscene to bring players up to date for havensward. (And i heard it was even worse, oh dear God).

As far as the gameplay itself goes, for what it intends to be, it's a 10/10.
    Customer service is probably 2/10.
Server issues are 6/10, but it's understandable that SE can barely keep up with hundreds of thousands of new players.
As for as the comparison to WoW goes, as a casual pve MMO, FFXIV outclasses WoW. As for competitive parsing, Blizzard encourages parses and min-max culture while SE sees advanced combat tracking as a bannable offense. FFXIV has pvp but WoW's is much more fun in my opinion; because of WoW's competitive culture, pvp is way more prevalent to the community and has a lot more content in terms of gear progression, achievements, ranks etc.

The best features from 1.0. are still missing even after so many years, things like belt glams for instance are still not there in this version and are infact being removed, which is sad to see.

The problem with this product is that yes it's entertaining at first but after a few years of playing it from expansion to expansion it's clear the product is suffering from stale, repetitive, and restrictive systems and choices. Yes there can be multiple things that one can go into why they enjoy it as with many games but the thing is this game is simply getting less and less enjoyable with each decision made to make it more focused on the catering towards those that rarely play the game which causes less and less reasons to care about investing your time into continue playing the game.

Yes, they did provided a reason to have invested your time into the game during the transfer from 1.0. to 2.0 but after that there is less and less reasons to bother doing so especially when you consider that nearly everything in the game as of this post is simply lacking in content to do once you've done all the previous content and have reached "endgame" which as of right now the "endgame" is simply you running through bozja to get your blade weapon and running through Eden's Promise, that's it.

I'm bored, so bloody bored. I got all the beast tribes, got everything to max, got basically all achievements as well as the mounts too. now with the end of shadowlands it's clear to me that this game isn't designed for hardcore play instead it's more designed with casuals in mind. which i'm not saying there is anything wrong with being a casual but when it comes to a mmorpg if there is no fun to be had for hardcore players too then what's the point?

    3. Toooo much teleportation, for it really ruins the game that I have to teleport every time i have to hand in a quest, and you can't enjoy the world. You could run, but it is so far away every time.
    4. Dungeons, fate, and other content do not feel rewarding when leveling, because when you finally get a cool spell, you can't use it in the content, because you are too high level, even if you only do the main quest, it is kinda frustrating.
    5. Also super hard to install, not easy at all.
    6. The spells are awesome, but some spells feels useless when you get another spell, also too slow.

I love the spells and animation, i just think the leveling experience is just too bad to continue, and I don't like that you have to get your character boosted to enjoy the content.

ARR improved on alot of issues sourrounding the game by either changing massive portions of it's game or outright replace them. It also delivered many new things to this game such as normal raids and alliance raids. Aswell as new jobs and dungeons.

The story is a continuation of the original with many new characters, enemies and allies. Gameplay and combat has been replaced entirely. From what used to be a bad immitation of FFXI it made itself anew by adding a Tab-target system of combat. Whilst it was a big improvement overall it did suffer from balancing issues.

Overall a very solid new start for this game wich would be the foundation for the game in years to come.

Graphics are really bad. Even Lineage 2 looks better at this point.

The music is fantastic and visually the game is decent, but the main thing holding back A Realm Reborn is simply the fact that the content in the base game is very repetitive and uninteresting.

I've been playing the game since launch with several breaks. The game can be a fun experience sometimes, but I cannot recommend playing it as it is intended by the developer.

FFXIV has a new expansion released every 2 years. And you only need a couple of months playing the game for about 2 hours a day to do all the casual battle content of an expansion (released at launch and during the 2-year lifecycle). This includes time to watch main scenario cutscenes and to quickly read through main scenario dialogues.

The game has very interesting HARDCORE BATTLE CONTENT, but I've decided to stop doing it for the following reasons:
    1. There is little amount of hardcore content (Savage Raids and Extreme Primals): 6 - 7 fights every 7 - 9 months.
    2. Progress through a Savage raids is artificially held back a lot due to weekly loot limitations, RNG and the amount of casual content grind required to gear up your character.
    3. It becomes repetitive very quickly. Fights are very rigidly scripted - to the point that you can write down the exact boss attack rotation.
    4. It's way too hard to find player parties for hardcore content. The game provides no efficient matchmaker or efficient tools to build communities (social networks) of reliable players or to filter out misbehaving players. Statics do on regular bases only hard content of the latest progression cycle (a new one starts every 7 - 9 months with the release of the next raid tier), because only this provides relevant rewards. Only about 10% of all active players manage to beat the last fight of a Savage Raid. In Stormblood two Ultimate difficulty fights have been released, that only about 1% of all active players were able to beat.

Doing OLD CONTENT (of previous expansions) is not nearly as interesting as new one, because:
    - all actions (abilities) of a job (battle class) become available only when it reaches the current level cap;
    - absolute majority of game characters entering older fights through duty roulettes for daily rewards are overgeared.
As a result older fights feel much more like easy grind than challenging and exciting action.

PvP in FF XIV is a complete joke. It is unpopular to the point that Square Enix has to limit the number of available game modes (and rotate them each weak) so that the matchmaker can manage to find players for the available ones. There is no open world PvP either. PvP is also completely F2P: a free trial character can participate in all PvP fights (except for ranked matches) on equal terms with subscribers. It is plagued with cheaters and botters. Reporting such players to Square Enix has no effect. There are no efficient ways of communication between players: there is no VoIP in the game, and some of PvP modes have even text chat disabled (you can only use phrases predefined by Square Enix by pressing buttons/using text macros).

The game is often praised for its CRAFTING system. While it is complex, it is also very repetitive at the same time. Players just use macros to automate the crafting process. If you decide to get into crafting seriously, you will need to level up all the crafting professions on a single game character in order to get all cross-class skills, as well as gathering professions for the supply of materials. And nobody is excited about gathering, because it's just a tedious grind. You don't need to level up crafting to be an efficient PvE/PvP player.

The game is heavily MONETIZED. Expect to buy the base game and the latest expansion, pay monthly subscription fee and besides:
    - If you are a crafter or collect glamours (cosmetic gear for your game character) you will easily run out of inventory space. To increase it you are expected to hire additional retainers (NPC characters) for additional real money monthly fee. Retainers also provide additional bonuses for crafters. There are cosmetic items that can be bought only with real money. You need to buy Fantasia potion with real money to change the appearance of your game character significantly.
    - You are interested in housing? Be aware that your house will be destroyed if you unsubscribe from the game for longer than 45 days in a row.
    - The mobile app for buying/selling stuff on the in-game auction (Market Board) with in-game currency (Gil) has an optional real money subscription fee and a premium currency that are used to unlock transactions.
    - There are Scenario Skip and Job Level-Boost potions. Be ready to buy both or buy none. If you buy only Scenario Skip potion (there are ~584 main scenario quests as of patch 4.58) your progress will be too slow because of lack of experience points bonuses.

Square Enix makes 50% DISCOUNTS on the base game and the latest expansion every year at different times on different digital stores (after several months cooldown since new expansion release). You also get all previous game expansions for free if you purchase the latest one.

Horrible drawn out story with 1 dimensional characters you can’t force yourself to care about. Enjoy hearing “it’s only the first 30 hours then the story gets so much better!” Just for it to become slightly more tolerable. The fact that they sell story skips in the cash shop speaks for itself. Graphic-wise, it feels old. It doesn't matter if you play in DX9c or DX11, it will be dated compared to the likes of World of Warcraft or any of the free "pay2win" MMOs. This isn't a huge deal, since most people who play an MMO don't care about graphics all that much. More import to them, is a story-line and gameplay driven by character development, which this game has plenty of. The additional features like levequests and guildhests add structure and guidance.

Overall, if you are a fan of the Final Fantasy series and story-driven MMOs, this is a worth-while purchase.

The new maps were nice, but they wore out VERY quickly until you can fly, then everything else becomes an utter waste of time. 50 bucks for Stormblood, when it's nothing more than Heavensward 1.5. Literally. Exact same raid system, exact same boring storyline that feels amateurish, rushed. Same stupid crafting scrip system that was hated in HW. You want a house? Well, too bad. Unless you are logged in on release day of the player housing, you get nothing. Free Company and personal housing mixed, reducing the chance of getting a house even more. Want to raid? Hope you enjoy wiping countless times because you missed a single step, killing everyone in the raid with you. Like 1-hit kills, no matter how much armor, HP, etc you have? Great, tons of them. Save your money, the subscription is a waste of time. There are almost zero content updates, save a drop every 3 months or so. Like holiday quests? Well, FF14's are trash, they last 15 seconds, and you're done. Zero effort anymore. Do not buy, or support this game until they make real changes. Expand

As for solo content, well there are tons to do but you might find yourself drained by the "rinse and repeat". You might not want to level several jobs in the same grind pattern. Even though there is several areas to level jobs/classes, you will see the determine "path of grinding" after around lvl 15-20.

Raid content is not terrible. I found it on par with other MMO's. Though my hardcore raid days are pretty much at an end, I have seen a few and there is a lot of free companies (guilds) out there doing raids. So giving an accurate review in this area would be unjustly done.

Overall it is a good game. Yes there are other options with F2P and I have played those. Most are P2W though. If you give this a try do it for 2-3 months as mentioned in a couple other reviews. Try multiple classes to at least level 15. It will give you a general feel and allow you to find where you want to spend your time after your trial period.

In the end, I'm not sure how this received such amazing reviews. RPGs on the Super Nintendo had more depth when it comes to combat -- and in some cases, story as well.
People have told me that, "you just have to reach level 30 before the story really takes off."
Really? ... If it takes that long for a game to become interesting and engaging, then you've failed as a developer.

FFXIV still suffers from the Ver 1.0 trainwreck but has at least headed in the right direction since then, but still there is a large room for improvement.

Some of the greatest issues are mostly for new players such as making gil, its very difficult for new players to make any descent money since most of the original methods for making money are either over farmed, or dead resources that no one really uses anymore, and with veteran players having countless millions of gil, its created a massive rift in the game, with certain features such as housing clearly showing these problems - having to pay upwards of 4 million+ for a basic house, and perhaps as high as 70 million for a large house is obnoxious, it more or less prevents new players from ever owning a house, garden and all that fun stuff.

Another problem is with questing, simply put - there isn't enough quests, with the primary source of levelling with grinding fates and repeating dungeons which honestly, does get boring quite fast - then times this via the amount of jobs you want to level and you get a really grindy game with honestly, little in the way of content to show for it. The saving grace is that at least when you unlock an advanced job, at least that doesn't start at level 1 at least - crafting and gathering are also both quite grindy and boring, especially at higher levels when you start to need cross job materials so your either forced to buy from other players, and lets face it - alot of these items are not going to be cheap in a player driven economy, or forced to grind it out yourself - which again, adds to more grindfest - veteran players though will probably tell you that ultimately this is one of the few ways you can make large amounts of money later in the game, assuming you can stick with the game long enough.

Questing and combat does have issues as well, with casters suffering from a 2.5 second timer on all offensive spells, plus a global cool down which honestly, feels like the combat is slightly on the slower side compared to melee fighters who have no cast times on skills. The cool downs for magic users feels a tad excessive to be really honest, especially during fates when 2.5 seconds is actually a really long time when casting a spell at a target just for a few melee players to decimate the mob you was targetting in less time.

Another issue is with the fact that some of the quests I would say haven't been properly balanced, some quests are either stupidly easy or stupidly difficult - these are almost always story quests which have balance issues. Also, there isn't any banks, there is a retainer which is kinder like a bank but you don't unlock that until later in the game so for new players. Zone design ranges from great to poor, many zones at least are well designed but personally I never liked the Gridania zones, they feel too cramped and far too many aggro monsters compared to other areas and finally, lag is also a major problem in FFXIV, lag spikes are deadly for squishy characters.

Overall, the game can be fun to play at times if you can stand the monotony of the typical Japanese (excessive) grind, there are many more issues with the game that I could easily mention too but there are also positive points about FFXIV, so I would say that this really is a game that isn't for everyone, but since you can get a free 14 day trial, this could be a game you'll totally enjoy, or hate but at least with the trial, your not losing anything.
