    For fans of turn-based strategy or tactical RPG games, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles will certainly become a benchmark for the genre. This game was a masterpiece when it was released nearly three decades ago, and it’s even better now thanks to all the new features added.

Refined with excellent quality-of-life improvements that enhance its already deep gameplay and superb voice acting, the War of the Lions’ story and battles have never felt more engaging. While the modest visual overhaul and missing War of the Lions content may disappoint those seeking a true definitive edition, they are minor issues in an otherwise excellent reimagining.

    Not much tweaking was necessary when bringing back this classic, but the addition of high-quality voice acting elevates Final Fantasy Tactics to another level entirely, with a narrative that engages from beginning to end. Coupled with some of the finest character customisation in the series, this is an essential play for fans that have fallen out of love with Final Fantasy following the latest numbered entries.

    Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles feels like a massive ship that's undergone a bizarre restoration process, comprising half reasonable repair work and half gaudy attempts to make improvements where they weren’t needed, and sometimes end up making things worse. And there’s a lack of control over the whole thing that feels frustrating compared to simpler, cheaper projects from competitors. It’s not a remaster, a port, or a remake. Instead, it’s the classic video game version of (one of my favorite books) John Dies at the End’s opening. This is the triumphant return of a life-changing experience many young nerds experienced on the PlayStation circa 1997. Is that true? Maybe, maybe not. But Final Fantasy Tactics is brilliant anyway, I reckon.

    What can I say? Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles remains, in essence, Final Fantasy Tactics. In that sense, the game is, by its mere existence, still one of the most striking adventures of the medium. There are indeed some substantial additions here in the interface, in quality of life, and even in the gameplay, but can these really justify a purchase at this price? We’ll let you answer that question, but know that, while in some respects this re-release proves particularly respectful of the source material, it also shows some baffling shortcomings. Where is the re-orchestration of the soundtrack? Where are the content additions from the War of the Lions version? Where are the adjustments for better camera angles? Certainly, The Ivalice Chronicles is without a doubt the most pleasant version of the game to play in 2025, but it also could (and should) have been much more.
