Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is, if I dare say, the definitive edition of the series’ second entry. Stunning visuals, haunting audio, engaging gameplay mechanics, storyline—it took everything from the original and immensely improved upon it to deliver both a chilling and heart-wrenching experience. Whether you’re completely new to the series or a longtime fan, the Crimson Butterfly Remake is not one to miss.

I’m usually a sceptic about remaking influential video games. However, I think Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake walks a fine line between revamping an old title, with its improved systems and added side stories, and keeping everything that made the original PS2 game a special and deeply influential experience at the time. It remains a very special game, and there’s more to chew on for fans.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake modernizes the 2003 classic with updated visuals, improved combat mechanics and a more immersive over-the-shoulder perspective. The terrifying atmosphere remains the highlight, with detailed environments and disturbing ghost designs that strengthen the game’s oppressive tone. New gameplay additions and quality-of-life improvements make the Camera Obscura system more dynamic and strategic. While the lack of Brazilian Portuguese support is disappointing, the remake successfully revitalizes one of the most iconic Japanese horror games. It stands as the definitive version of a genre classic.

The Project Zero 2 remake has a value that goes far beyond technical specs or cold numbers. It's proof that a certain kind of horror — one that steers clear of gore and spectacle at all costs — can still work in a market this 'distracted' and increasingly drawn to quick thrills. Tecmo Koei has taken its most accomplished and beloved entry and transformed it into something new, capable of attracting even those players who, until now, had kept their distance from the kind of unsettling, supernatural atmosphere that defines the Project Zero series.

Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly is a fantastic remake, although it suffers from some jank like late tutorials and a bit dated combat system, it is one of the most captivating Japanese horror stories ever and it deserved a good remake, so more people can finally experience the horror of the crimson ritual.

Koei Tecmo has absolutely blown it out of the water with this release, so big props to the team behind it. When it comes to doing remakes well, I’d put this up on the pedestal alongside games like the Resident Evil remakes. It is an absolute must-play for survival horror fans, and if you’re curious on what survival horror looks like outside of your typical association, you’ll definitely want to check out Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake.

Once you've played Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, it becomes clear why the original is still regarded as the series' finest entry. After receiving modern updates, this already classic story reaches new heights in atmosphere and immersion, while the multiple playthrough and multiple ending structure, combined with the chapter select feature, allows players to gain a deeper understanding of the narrative with as little repetition as possible.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a hauntingly beautiful reimagining that successfully modernizes one of the series' most iconic entries with modern visuals and new mechanics. While the atmosphere and puzzles are masterfully executed, the experience is slightly dragged down by a combat system that can feel more frustrating than fun. However, the expanded story and atmospheric overhaul still make this a must-play for fans of the series and survival-horror fans in general.

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE honors the original while upgrading the game with excellent visuals and welcomed gameplay improvements. While the new charm system doesn't add that much, the Camera Obscura filters do well to shake up the traditional gameplay alongside the new side stories and locations that fit right into the narrative.

The Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake is a highly successful title that delivers refined horror through upgraded visuals and delicate sound design. While there is some repetition due to the inherent limitations of the original classic, the dynamic improvements to the camera combat and the deeply emotional narrative brilliantly offset these minor flaws. It is highly recommended for J-horror fans who appreciate eerie lore and a tension-filled atmosphere.

Fatal Frame 2 Remake is creepy, haunting, and thrilling in equal measure. It’s also fiddly and frustrating at times, and requires the player to put in a ton of effort if they want to feel like they’ve gotten everything out of the story. (PROTIP: get a walkthrough.) Still, it’s a truly affecting experience, and that’s down to the developers’ brilliant use of mechanics. I’ve played literally hundreds of creepy horror titles, but I’ve almost never felt this kind of connection to the story, and that’s entirely down to the decision they made to trigger that bit of physical discomfort in the player. I can’t imagine it’s going to be an experience for everyone, but the results are inarguable – I cared about what happened to these twins, and appreciated the experience all the more because of it.

If you’ve never played a Fatal Frame game before, this remake is the perfect place to start. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a well-done rebuild of a classic that I feel does well walking the line between preserving its identity and modernising its gameplay. While some of the original’s raw tension is softened by updated controls and systems, the core feel remains mostly there. What matters is getting that horror feel right, and Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is an atmospheric, slow-burning horror that still manages to unsettle. It may not fully replace the original for purists, but for newcomers and some fans, it stands as a strong revival of one of the genre’s scariest games.

We’ve seen a lot of horror remakes recently, for Silent Hill or Resident Evil, and it was expected that Fatal Frame will see its remakes at some point. I am very glad that they chose Fatal Frame II, and while I was not accustomed to the series and its gameplay, it certainly managed to grow on me as I played. It’s also nice that the remake is more of a reimagining of the original and not just a remaster. Plus, the great thing is that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake performs very well, there were no crashes or major bugs. It’s a great release, and the fact that new horror fans get to experience this classic with all these bells and whistles is exciting. The best part is that they added some much-needed quality of life features and new story content, so even veterans will be compelled to try it. Sure, it will take a bit to get used to combat and lore, but it’s a journey worth embarking on.

The Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake masterfully recreates the macabre atmosphere of the 2003 original, offering a terrifying experience with top-notch sound design and an emotional narrative. While the Camera Obscura combat is engaging, it is sometimes hindered by balancing issues and 'damage sponge' enemies. Furthermore, the game suffers from significant optimization problems and high hardware demands. Despite these technical flaws, it is a hauntingly beautiful revival that nails the essence of Japanese horror and rewards exploration with multiple endings.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake faithfully preserves the haunting charm of its story, where sadness, beauty, and eeriness coexist, while vividly reimagining the classic horror experience. Combat with the Camera Obscura can occasionally lack a sense of punch, which is a minor drawback, but the enhanced presentation gives the village an even more oppressive and unsettling atmosphere, and the gameplay now holds up well by modern standards. Though some aspects of its progression remain old-school, the game’s meticulous structure is still exceptional, making this remake in large part a welcome revival of a horror classic.

Despite my irks with the game, I couldn’t help but feel entranced by its atmosphere. It won’t take long for you to figure out what’s gone horrible wrong in Minakami, but the side stories you catch glimpses of as you saunter through run down homes and village walks paint a picture of terror, violence, and sometimes regret. You’ll encounter some messed up events as you get to one of the game’s many endings and, despite my issues with Mio, she handles these encounters with far more grace than my scaredy bones could ever. Repetition is in FATAL FRAME II’s nature and though I find more comfort from the horrors of Minakami Village behind the camera lens, it’s hard to deny that the game would be complete without its gorgeous setting and haunting narrative. Take a snapshot and hope you don’t miss.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake does so many things right, and even the mechanics that give me nightmares turned out to be high points in my experience. The atmosphere and setting are creepy, and the great use of jump scares, camera angles, and an engaging story heightened the horror I felt deep within. The use of the Camera Obscura to interact with the world is great, and it ups the horror factor more than I expected, but the combat can be extremely frustrating to the point that I had to take breaks. Still, I always felt compelled to come back, and I am glad I did.

A true remake bringing back the tense atmosphere and thrilling fights using the Camera Obscura. The new Fatal Frame 2 is one of the scariest games you'll get to play these days.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a faithful reimagining of the original game— visually impressive, satisfying in terms of performance, and successful at keeping players hooked thanks to its sense of mystery. However, while some of the new abilities introduced add value to the game, they also take away from it in significant ways. Regardless, for fans of the genre, this remake of a classic is a must-play.

A handful of ill-conceived alterations prevent Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake from being quite as compelling as its legendary predecessor, but it’s still a strong survival horror game elevated by a memorable narrative and impressive production values.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterly is a horror classic that’s unfortunately weighed down by questionable design changes. While it’s just as tense and atmospheric as ever, very much helped by the terrific audio and visual design, the focus on combat creates an experience less about the horror and more about ghostly engagements. Some of the changes are welcome, such as the quality-of-life improvements when selecting film on the fly and filters for the Camera Obscura, but the aggravated wraith addition causes more of a headache than it does exciting encounters. In the end, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake makes a lot of improvements to the formula and overall exploration of the world, but focuses too heavily on the combat.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake successfully captures the soul and voice of a classic while improving on the presentation and scope, but shoddy combat often brings those commendable efforts down.

FATAL FRAME II: REMAKE has the potential to be something great. The most important elements of a great horror story are there, but they get lost far too quickly.
