    I don't understand all of the critical negativity surrounding this game (outside of Metacritic, that is!). It was never meant to be a direct sequel to the first two Fallout titles and yet it gets judged as if it were one time and time again. It's a combat strategy game with some adventure/RPG elements set in the Fallout universe. It also happens to be fairly good. It's aged reasonablyI don't understand all of the critical negativity surrounding this game (outside of Metacritic, that is!). It's a combat strategy game with some adventure/RPG elements set in the Fallout universe. It also happens to be fairly good.     I started with the newer Fallout games. Then about a year ago I decided to pick up the triple pack (Fallout 1, 2, and this one. At first, I didn't quite understand this game. It was confusing, felt a little weird and such. I got a few missions in and I have to say that it isn't all that bad. I was astonished by the graphics of the cutscenes. A little disappointing in the linear gameplay.I started with the newer Fallout games. Then about a year ago I decided to pick up the triple pack (Fallout 1, 2, and this one.     Though if the original 2 games had combat like this, it would be nearly perfect.

    Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel is a tactical shooter set in the Fallout universe. A group of dissenters split off from the main Brotherhood in the Core Region. In part it's to escape the strict nature of the Brotherhood, but also to chase escaping militant Super Mutants from the Masters Army. The game fills a nice niche, taking place between Fallout and Fallout 2, in the still toFallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel is a tactical shooter set in the Fallout universe. A group of dissenters split off from the main Brotherhood in the Core Region. In part it's to escape the strict nature of the Brotherhood, but also to chase escaping militant Super Mutants from the Masters Army. The game fills a nice niche, taking place between Fallout and Fallout 2, in the still to this day unexplored mid-west United States.

    The good: Solid tactical game play. Some big voice talent such as R. Lee Ermey as General Barnaky, and Ron Perlman narrating. Not to mention that all of the main characters, and many secondary characters are voice acted. With it's isomeric view it hails to the first two Fallout games with a good deal of homage. There are many objectives in each mission, and the better you do, the better the final outcome of each mission. But if you only complete the base objectives expect to get berated a bit, and if you mess up expect to be berated a lot. But if you fail the voice of your commander will encourage you to try again. As a strategy game few even today can actually match it. The addition of usable vehicles, which your characters can shoot from is nice though.

    The bad: Unlike previous games in the Fallout franchise this game is entirely linear, about all of the exploration you get is in each mission. While this can net you needed equipment to use or sell it can get a bit tedious. The game is also repetitive, very much geared for strategy fans more than RPG fans. RPG fans may find the strategy gameplay tedious. On the other hand Strategy game fans may find the RPG elements tedious.

    Other notes: This game has a ton of items in it, which can be good for players who like more micromanagement, but bad for players who don't. While linear it has a good story to go on with. Still purist fans of Fallout won't like this game at all, but more hardcore fans hungry for more Fallout might just. Again for people who like to micromanage, there are tons of squad members who you can customize quite a bit, from armor and weapons, to skills.

    Final note: The massive graphical overhaul, diversity of weapons, more tense background music, and simplified combat system all add up to huge potential. But due to the nature of the game it makes a terrible RPG. Still it makes a better than average tactical strategy game set in the Fallout universe. Despite this it's strategy elements will probably disappoint most RPG fans, and the RPG elements might make the game too confusing for many strategy fans.    … Expand

    Its not realy a good game.It has some major flaws.Ive played all Falloutgames and ive played through Tactics when it came out and now im playing it the second time.The basic story is ok.The problem is the storytelling.Its bad.The game tells its "story" with some dialoges.Or should i say monologues?Cause you cant interact.And thats my major point why the sucks in terms of story.TheIts not realy a good game.It has some major flaws.Ive played all Falloutgames and ive played through Tactics when it came out and now im playing it the second time.The basic story is ok.The problem is the storytelling.Its bad.The game tells its "story" with some dialoges.Or should i say monologues?Cause you cant interact.And thats my major point why the sucks in terms of story.The characters are not important.Not your commanding officer, not the people you save(or kill) and not your team.The voiceacting is ok but thats it.The dialoges are short and tell not realy a story.You progress through the when you finish missions.These missions are sometimes well made, sometimes suck completely because they lack something.There are maps for sneaking, thats fun.IF IT WORKS PROPERLY!!The pathfinding is terrible and sometime youll get spotted because of that or you lose AP because the character takes a strange route.No go in a tactical game.How much the game is flawed depends on your characterbuild for the maincharacter.Play a sniper and the game is far to easy.Play a melee or unarmed character and you punish yourself.On example:The first enemys suck.You sneak behind them, hit them in the eyes and most of them die.Problems begin when you encaunter the mutants.They got nasty weapons(big guns).You sneak uppon them and melee them, youll die probally because of the high HP they got and you lack the power in meleecombat.Remeber those sneakcrits from fallout 3 or New Vegas?In Tactics even this crappy **** needs an extra perk.Makes the hole idea useless.Makes the deathclaw race useless.Yes, you can play with deathclaws in your party.Sounds amazing, right?Nope, they suck.Waste of time because they die too quickly.Just one example for bad balance and/or design decisions.Another topic are the random encounters.FAR TOO MANY!!!!And some of them are realy hard if you are on foot.Youve got you APC?The encounters are too easy in that case.Sorry, bad balancing.Another point is the progression in terms of equipment.The game lacks late game content especialy when you play with a meleechar.Youll get the ripper pretty early in the game, the powerfist too.These are the best weapons for close combat.That suckz.All in all, the game is realy fun in the first missions.There is a steady progression, you level up pretty quick.But the game gets boring pretty fast.… Expand

    This game attempted to be a squad-based TBS game like Jagged Alliance 2 or XCom UFO Defense, but in the Fallout 2 universe. Unfortunately, this effort didn't succeed, because its Fallout-based interface, skill system and the story-based mission design didn't work well for a TBS; at the same time, the sequence of missions is too linear for an RPG game, and there are no dialog trees whichThis game attempted to be a squad-based TBS game like Jagged Alliance 2 or XCom UFO Defense, but in the Fallout 2 universe. Unfortunately, this effort didn't succeed, because its Fallout-based interface, skill system and the story-based mission design didn't work well for a TBS; at the same time, the sequence of missions is too linear for an RPG game, and there are no dialog trees which made all the fun in Fallout (and its recent remake, Underrail).

    When you create a character, it feels like Fallout, yes. The graphics are mostly taken from there, yet done with higher resolution. Most music tracks are the same. The GUI is similar. However, the very first mission already shows you pretty much what the game is: you crouch along a maze-like level, with many walls, barrels, sandbags, dispatching one small group of bad guys after another. You can't see the tiles and it's not clear what provides cover and what not, and what blocks line of sight or not. The map design usually offers only one solution to every situation which you will usually guess after dying while trying a different approach. Setting "tough guy" ("iron man"/permadeath) mode doesn't make much sense because of the fog-of-war system (you won't see enemies until you come close to them) and the extreme length of missions.

    In the options you can choose between real-time mode, individual turns mode and squad turns mode. The best of them is "squad turns".

    All in all, I can't really recommend this game, unless you grab it in a bundle with Fallout 1 and 2 on GOG. But those two are RPG games of a different caliber. If you want to check out an old-school squad-based game, I'd rather recommend Jagged Alliance 2 or XCom UFO Defense.    … Expand

    Comme son nom l'indique, ce Fallout est surtout un jeu de stratégie avant que d'être un jeu de rôle puisqu'on y contrôle toute une escouade de la Confrérie de l'Acier qui se fait une joie et un devoir de pacifier les terres désolées... infestées de mutants, vermines et autres joyeusetés, de manière méthodique et rigoureuse.

    Bien que le jeu laisse le choix du temps réel (!), le Tactics    Comme son nom l'indique, ce Fallout est surtout un jeu de stratégie avant que d'être un jeu de rôle puisqu'on y contrôle toute une escouade de la Confrérie de l'Acier qui se fait une joie et un devoir de pacifier les terres désolées... infestées de mutants, vermines et autres joyeusetés, de manière méthodique et rigoureuse.

    Bien que le jeu laisse le choix du temps réel (!), le Tactics s'apprécie au tour par tour via une interface belle et bien léchée, rapidement agréable à l'usage. Ses graphismes 2D sont bien vieilli et marquaient une amélioration significative après les deux premiers Fallout : on a en effet une palette 16 bits et du... 800x600 ! et même bien davantage avec les mises-à-jours qui suivirent.

    Malheureusement, deux mauvaises décisions du développeur ont impacté la jouabilité : premièrement, l'inventaire est spécifique et non commun à l'ensemble de l'équipe... vu tout ce qu'on ramasse, on perd un temps fou à redistribuer rien que les flingues et les munitions en fonction des capacités de chacun. J'aime pas faire le magasinier, ça me soûle !

    Secondement, les cartes sont toujours très grandes, trop grandes pour du tour par tour : là aussi, un temps précieux sera perdu à la parcourir ou dénicher le dernier clampin à buter. On souffle bruyamment.

    Malgré ses deux gros défauts, Fallout Tactics dispose d'une excellente ambiance et de missions assez intéressantes en définitive ; c'est leur implémentation qui prête le flanc à la critique. Que ne donnerait-on pas pour revoir ce FT rebooté à la Xcom !    … Expand

    This was a game I enjoyed much more than the first two.
    The graphics had some small improvements, nothing amazing, but it helped a lot to identify some things and items in the scenario that I couldn't before.
    The gameplay in my opinion has improved dramatically. The option to turn off turns and be a tactical action game was really cool in this game. Being able to choose the specialty,    This was a game I enjoyed much more than the first two.

    Of course, it's still a limited game due to being from 2001, but it's a lot more fun than the previous ones.
    The story/general context of this game is better than the previous ones too, but your decisions practically have no weight at the end, much less throughout the story.
    At the time it must have been a great game, but today I dragged myself to finish.    … Expand

    It's simply too frenetic in spots for some tastes. Still, that's a fairly minor quibble with what is undoubtedly one of the more enjoyable strategy offerings of the year thus far.
