This game is one of the best role-play games I have ever played. The role-play part doesn't interfere with the story line, which I found very nice. The weapons are very realistic because they can get f=damaged and that causes them to do less damage. The NPC AI isn't as bad as some say. So they make a wrong turn, or don't listen to you, or walk into a rock. So what. No AI is This game is one of the best role-play games I have ever played. Another part of this game is you can customize the color of your Pip-Boy and your HUD. And a nice part about the role-play is that you can be good or evil. And even if your evil, you can still become good. The karma system is very cool. The karma even effects how people like you in the game. I can't think of anything else. Best game ever. Expand

Fallout 3 is a great game but incredibly glitched and most of the time you'll find your self wedged between a tree and a hill. Forcing me to reload an older save. Another feature is what you have done in the affects the rest of the game and multiple choices of finishing quests.

I would give this a 10, as it is probably the best game I have ever played. The only problem is the crashes, this game crashes so much, I'm not really getting anywhere with it, because it just goes to the last save, though I have noticed disabling SLI cuts them down a bit, and there are patches (if you can get them). Once you've escaped Vault 101 you feel the impact of the nuclear war and the game doesn't stop reminding you. Sadly for a 3rd-Generation game the graphics aren't up to scratch. While visually its absolutely stunning, the body movements of AI's is hideous and it becomes a mess when several of them come up to the screen and start waving around infront of you. VATS (slow motion cinematic attacks) will definitely miss when this happens and usually when your cornered you're reduced to your melee. Though its not like you happily switch to your melee weapon, this happens after you've wasted your EXTREMELY PRECIOUS ammo, which the game doesn't give nearly enough of. Other than those flaws, that are often found with nitpicking, the game lives to standards of an amazing (hybrid) First and Third Person Shooter RPG. Although, while the Third Person option is available, it's far too poorly constructed. The crosshair is much too small in the first place, and when your character runs on a diagonal axis it looks like they are floating (honestly, you can't play without moving diagonally). You can fix this by zooming in close enough and only showing from north of your characters belt. It work's perfectly - shame though that PS3 and X360 couldnt do this, PC version reigns supreme for this feature. Again, minor things that don't exactly affect gameplay. It makes up for this with a gripping storyline, that never seemed to end. There are countless side quests if you don't mind exploring the map, which you probably won't. Excavation of random shopping malls, mines and silo's is as exciting as can be, finding new guns and new threads. The game is very very addictive and every gamer should own it. Expand

Tons of stuff to find and explore, lots of situations to deal with. The game's problems are significant, though, and this is where rating it is difficult. The graphics are pretty good on the highest settings, but I've noticed that it slows down computers (sometimes even the consoles) more than it ever should. A machine that runs Far Cry 2 flawlessly will still have trouble with F3 from time to time. Lots of oversights; floating objects/debris piles/buildings/etc. Many bugs and glitches that are potentially game-breaking. Character animations needed some work, and I did not like the built-in inaccuracy of the weapons. The fact that I still give it a 9 out of 10 shows that I think the gameplay is solid, and the game, at its core, is a great one. Expand

I've played through Fallout 3 three times now (I'm currently on my third game) and I still enjoy it. There are so many possible outcomes, the fun never ends. I do agree, however, that the game isn't what we were promised. And while there are some consiquences for your actions, they're not as major as Bethesda would like you to think. In Megaton, I murdered the doctor, and no one ever noticed. I would have been happy if occasionally one of them mentioned his death. And if you think having a follower changes anything, it doesn't. They become your backup and your pack mule. No one else notices them. If you can ignore major flaws like that, it is a very fun game with some replay value (you always tend to miss something when you play the game the first time). I recommend it, but don't expect it to be revolutionary. Maybe Fallout 4 will be free of these issues? Expand

Fallout 3 is a epic sequal to fallout 2 and 3 but i gave it a 9 instead of a 10 because the wateland in the first 2 games looks like a desart and that the creators insearted their own componay into the game (its south of scrappyard) the game could be very easy or very hard, depending on the diffulcty and your progress into the game (mutch like oblivion).

Buggy as hell, stats are meaningless in-game, and the dialogue is average to bad, but if you enjoy dungeon crawling like I do, then it's a fun game. Definitely needed the patches and dlc to be a good experience, which should not be something that is necessary in a commercially released game. Overall, above average, but nothing spectacular.

I played and completed this game (which took ages btw ^^) and not because of bugs, or anything, but because its a long game! I had very VERY rare crashes, and was kept laughing right the way though by crazy dialoge. This is a great game and amazing value for money time wise. In short, This game is teh winz.

Avoid this game at all costs. I read reviews that said people lost entire hard drives, but I didn't believe it.

Within an hour of installing the game it literally killed my hard drive. I didn't just lose the data, the hard drive DIED. No longer works. Kaput.

The game is (sorry but only a superlative will do) brilliant. I would definitely say it was the best RPG of 2008, in-fact quite possibly one of the finest RPGs of all time. I shit you not. I took away one point as I believe it takes some perseverance to truly appreciate it; I did not enjoy it immediately, and many others I have spoken to have said initially they found it hard to get into. But (and I know I'm using all the clichés in the book) it grows on you. Grows like a mutated third arm following some serious radiation sickness. Really, buy this game. Buy it even if you didn't like Oblivion, a game to which it owes a great deal, yet Fallout 3 is an entirely different beast, and I mean this in the best way possible. In fact, I urge you to buy it even if you don't like RPGs or FPSs: You WILL get hooked. Hooked on psycho, jet, buffout. I mean, it allows you to play at your own pace, yet it constantly gives you something to strive for. I haven't had a dull moment within the game were I really couldn't be bothered to do anything. When it comes to the time that you want to replay it, you should set yourself personal challenges; I decided with one character I was going to wear the tunnel snake jacket armoured with a baseball bat. And I felt damn cool. Especially whilst you bat some innocent NPC to death, who doesn't really deserve it, but you just like to admire the brutality in V.A.T.S slow-mo, with a host of different camera angles. Really, I cannot fault the gameplay, the atmosphere, the story, the graphics, nothing, aside from a few bugs/glitches here and there, but that's all due to the complexity and depth of the game. So, to re-iterate; buy it. Expand

Fallout 3 has a lot of boring and long quest "dungeons" with lots of repetitive fights and dull backtracking. There are not many types of enemies. The difficulty is not balanced and the fact that you can adjust difficulty at any time means that Bethesda just did not bother nor care. Also, the main story is not very good and certainly not satisfying for an RPG. The third-person view is a joke. Inventory management is not very user-friendly and I was mad from constant switching between all the menus and sub-menus on PIPboy. About its tone, sometimes I had a feeling that the game can't decide whether it is serious or a dark comedy. It can't be both and it shows. But to summarise Fallout 3 like this would be unfair. It has also many positive aspects, for example its beautifully looking (graphically and aesthetically) post-apocalyptic world for you to explore, with sometimes mind-blowing attention to detail. Wandering around the Capital Wasteland is an experience itself. Peaceful music during exploring and action music during, well, action is also very well composed and deserves a mention - it greatly adds to the atmosphere. Other thing that deserves attention are side quests - the game hides some very powerful stories, which you may or may not uncover and resolve, whether by helping people or hurting them. It's up to you to choose, but you will be immersed and intrigued by the stories either way. Listening to the radio with music from the fifties and a funny DJ while shooting mutants is also great. Also, shooting off heads and limbs of enemies in slow motion almost never stops being fun thanks to its intentional, gory exaggeration. Another positive thing is the beginning itself, which is very original and fun. Next several hours of gameplay are also fun and a satisfying experience. The bad thing is that it doesn't last till the end. Expand

Still, it's much better than Oblivion, which was the previous RPG in this style from this developer, even though it feels like a conversion of it at times. Then again, the only way to go from it was up, so... Oh, and don't mistake this game for a part of the Fallout series. I know, I know, it's called "Fallout 3", but about the only thing that connects it to its supposed predecessors is the butchered setting and forced references. Honestly, those feel so out of place for someone who has played FO1 and FO2 that the game would probably have been better without them. I'd give this game a 5/10, but it can't NOT lose a point for it's ending. It's not mediocre, it's bad. And so it gets a 4. It has so much content outside of the progressively more dumb main quest that this may not even be an issue for some. In summary, if you have time for video games and no good games on which to spend it then it can be a viable substitute. Otherwise don't waste your time. Expand

While the tutorial does, indeed, suck... there is an invention called the "internet" full of wikia's with plenty of information. While the baby book is cute, for someone who has never played the game... it's rather uninformative (the standard point distribution screen being more informative). Unfortunatly, stat ballancing is little more than that, only END and INT seem to offer major skill bonus' (and both have a large return [health, skill points, rad resistance]). W/E... the point is I feel like I'm picking out which stats matter over which just... suck. Combat can be clunky... V.A.T.S is borring... blah blah... but most relivant is that the game hardly "feels" alive. True, the world was devistated by a series of nuclear explosions (that did not detonate the nuclear cars lying around (nor destroy anything... atleast nothing that 200 years of disrepair couldn't account for)... nore could I care for pumping the greyscale... brownscale is soo much better than dulling the color.... What I'm trying to point to is that the environment neither frighten's me nore feels to be true to the story (the feeling is a little more like desolation... as if everyone just left the city... although the game is already absurdly high in it, the "environment" needs more bodies. Not those empailed bodies... but like a family huddeling together right before they get fosilized, people having built their own makeshift "fallout shelters"... fallout 3 has a map... but its world has no questions... it has no beauty... it just is and some few things happen in it. infact, I am througly confused as to why there are signs pointing to megaton for people leaving vault 101 (thats not a question, thats a "this doesn't fit into the idea of the world") I'll end by stating that twitch play is how the game should be. If you focus on combat you don't want turn based unless you're using tactics... twitch play keeps nerves up... I've never much approved of games that made combat last several min against 1-2 foes... it often feels more like the AI is cheating than anything. But I would suppose that the PC will get stronger yet so... we'll see. However, regardless on PC strength... the ability to shoot up... left and right... is beyond stupid. These "drugs" that junkies use to get high are used by the PC to aid in combat... and with no penitally with how many you carry or how many you use at once... worse are stim packs which might be essential when continuously fighting, sort of kill the experience by allowing one to horde enough to resurect the dead city. But W/E an okay game... thats what matters I guess. Expand

Watching the nuke detonate in the story line was fantastic and a little scarry. As with all Bethesda games, the voice acting and NPC interaction is excellent. However the story was too short. I finished the game in just under 12 hours of total play time. I wish it could have been longer as I was totally immersed in the post war world.

The only thing that happens is after I go to place after place, or go to an area where I see a vast area of Wasteland, the game slows down and the sound starts poping, but I believe this to be a computer problem as it has to load a heaping amount of things or remember a heaping amount of things, but in those situations all I do is exit the game and come back in and I'm fine. Now to the games details. The game starts out slow as it is just your life growing up in the vault, but once you get into the wasteland, your thrust into an open end game that lets you do whatever you damn please. This allows for limitless game play as you can help or hurt the random people you find. The main storyline could be longer, but with all the side quest and random monsters, it really does not matter after a while. Plus, the humor and irony in the game is pretty amusing. Graphics are good but not that good, low resolution textures. Typical Bethesda they don't give a damn about the PC. This game was made for Xbox. Quite good game. The combat system is simply amazing. I think this game has one issue, bugs. Alot of players have had alot of issues with this game including me. I got the game working in about 20 minutes after installation. The game has been developed very well and for Fallout fans its like a dream come true.

And a lesser rant: for people that refuse to give a 10 because that would mean a perfect game... umm... then you really have a scale of 9. 10 means "as perfect as any game you will buy at present." The industry and technology are advancing, and will always advance. Ratings on video games are on a curve, not an absolute. You know, by that logic, why give things 9... surely the 9's of the future will make current games look like a 5, maybe we should reserve more than just 10 for the future? Yeah, let's rate all current games a maximum of 5 so that the future has room for 6,7,8,9, and 10s. D'oh! Expand

Overall amazing game...really a work of art. The only things I found wrong was: 1. the game crashed on numerous occasions (looked up online and got a codec fix) 2. The main story is EXTREMELY short. The first time I played I went straight through the story...got about 12 hours of gameplay. I started the game over and did the sidequests...I'm still playing and I've gotten 33 hours.

I love this game. Combat is interesting, dialogue is great, but is hinderd by bad voice acting, i love the fiction, lots of content, but not half as much as oblivion, which makes sense because the fallout isnt bethesdas series, and too remain faithfull to the series, they have to stay with the established fiction.

Perfect game, sure it may be like oblivion and the engine but it is really good.. You start off as a baby, child, then adult, you even get to take a test which is really realistic. It has that nice bioshock feeling aswel for some reason. It feels sort of old style.
Anyway, alot of quests to do.. Gets exciting by the minute, congratulations Bethesda softworks for making a perfect game.

Game is amazing! The map is so huge that there's always something to do (even if it is just killing/shooting heads off random people) and the story kept me asking for more. Maybe a little more available ammo for the amazing guns, but besides that I'm all over it.

User ratings for FO3, that have fallen below 7, are lopsided and unfair. For instance, were some of the "disappointments" with the game, based on alleged "bugs", have more to do with serious development misfires.....or with gaming systems that are/were antiquated? Were some of the criticisms of the game based on idiosyncratic preferences for straightforward, traditional "first person shooters" and "RPG's", rather than appreciating FO3's hybrid approach? Were some of the criticisms of FO3 just hyperbolic statements that were given as user correctives to perceived game over-hype, rather than aiming for a more "objective" analysis of the FO3 material? Were some of the extremely low criticisms given merely for the sake of being rebellious and contrarian? In any event, I hope the negative criticisms will not deter prospective consumers from buying this game. The Gamespy review does an excellent job of assessing what a buyer is in for when he/she gets FO3, so it's unnecessary to retread here. If someone is hesitant about purchasing the game for the PC because of bugs, they should keep in mind that patches are inevitable with virtually every PC title that gets released. No game is ever "bug free". At the very least, do yourself the favor by getting the game for the PS3 or the 360. It will not disappoint you. Expand

Can't see how it got 92% though. Anyway, it was pretty fun playing this game. You got all these customization you can do - facial features (but somehow you can't change your body shape - you could do it in Van Buren), skills, decisions, etc. Then you get to explore a huge world with awesome graphics, an excellent wastelandish atmosphere (ghostly abandoned vaults were good). And it's really easy to learn how to play this game too. The VATS was interesting for a while and it helps you get through tight spots. Some side quests are good, e.g. Moira's. And oh, I love the music. The radio station is a darn good concept. But as usual there are flaws. First of all, it's really easy to get stuck - so save often, or just use the console. It's really frustrating when you spent 15 minutes killing off a horde of super mutants then get stuck when you were exploring in some rubbles. Then there is the poor AI (I'm not sure if higher difficulties fixes that). For example, enemies tend to get stuck with obstacles and that gives you infinite time to finish them off. Another example is extremely aggressive allies that will attack high level enemies with bare hand. Walking around in the wasteland can be pretty tiresome. Yeah running speed is too slow - could have had a sprint button or something like that. NPCs can be a bit bland - they are not as fleshed out as in Fallout e.g. not as emotional or as sarcastic. Facial animations are really bad haha. I was playing Half-Life 2 and I was surprised with the facial animation - and that was released at the end of 2004... hm. Games too easy - you can be a jack of all trades and be the master of everything. Takes a lot of traps to kill you too. Yeah that's right, everything. Strategy and smart allocation of skill/char points/ perks doesn't seem as vital now since they don't really critically affect what you can do and poor management doesn't seem to cripple you as much as in Fallout. Main quest is not that interesting imo - in the end it seems like a chore and no better than some of the better side quests. One thing I sorely missed was the element of randomness. E.g. in Fallout, sometimes when you attack you critically miss and drop your weapon, or you hit so hard that the enemy passes out, etc. In Fallout 3 eventually everything becomes kinda routine. And one thing that baffles me is the disappearance of the ability to retrieve ammo from a gun (or maybe I missed it). Again it's a decent game. I would say it's a watered down, adapted-to-casual-gamers version of Fallout. An analogy would be those non-technical scientific books written for the mass rather than for intellectuals in that field, you get what I mean? Expand

Also, there was one time where a quest-necessary character got stuck on an object. I was left no choice but to quick-load!!!! These glitches made it nigh on unplayable. Voice acting... all I need to say, done by people. This means sometimes it is not Oscar worthy acting... terrible shortcoming. Also, the music, its like they took it straight from the 1940's or something. You think they could have gotten something more modern... like Soulja Boi.

And YES, the main quests is a little predictable but nevertheless quite challenging. And YES, fights become a little bit easy after a while, but I still get shot sometimes by those supermutants if they're enough and I don't get criticals on their heads (which nicely explode). The variety of enemies also isn't that big but I have a nice pack of guns with which I can take them down! Ammunition can become an issue but usually it's not a real prob to have enough ammo for at least on of those fabulous guns you can carry! Aditionally I believe that in a postnuclear world ammo shouldn't lie around everywhere... So if you're into "Mad Max"-like postnuclear scenarios and like to roam around in a quite huge world using tonz of gunz, lockpicking, hacking, sneaking, bartering and so on THIS IS THE GAME YOU SHOULD PLAY. I also played the Fallout 1 & 2 like ten years ago and I think F3 at least partially brings back the old feelings. Presentation is also quite nice (not so nice: some pop-ups, textures are a little bad on a closer look) and the far-view is incredible, at least with my HD 4870. Seeing a brotherhood of steel guy in his power armor from face to face is really nice if you're use to the old 2D-iso perspective. I'm playing the game for 40 hours now and I almost finished the main plot, but I don't want the game to be over! Therefore I'm roaming around in the wastelands trying to explore every single corner of this world to get every quest and item I can get. Boring characters, quite slow, tiring quests that don't generate enthusiam. Fallout 3 really needed to be a lot better to deserve the high marks. After hours of playing, this had not grabbed me and I left feeling rather unsatisfied, but not disgusted.

This game is decent, but doesn't live up to the first two. Other reviews cover the pros pretty well, I will focus on cons. Combat is fun enough, but not very challenging. An immersive world is not enough, I want a story that makes me feel some sort of emotion and/or sparks my imagination. And don't tell me I have to make my own stories, that argument only goes so far. Oh, also plot holes do not constitute interesting developments. Expand

Wow! This game is totally awesome! Selecting your sex, your Look, and first missions when you are a baby. Fixing guns, armor accessories and other stuff. And details of world and effects are amazing! THANK YOU FALLOUT3 team! :3

This game doesn't do it for me like Half Life 2 or even Oblivion. It's really boring. Love the 50s music though. Half Life was an extension of my being . I was inside the monitor literally. Got very frustrated ,wandered around the wasteland only to be killed by monsters with a 10 mm gun which quickly run out of ammo(no key for the armoury-couldn't find it). What do I do after that? Just wander around with no ammo waiting to be killed rinse repeat. Don't like this game at all sorry. Overhyped. VATS system bores me too. Expand

A very immersive game, even if not all features, items and game mechanics that were present in previous incarnations have made it into this one, making it a bit less S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Played about 20hrs (on normal difficulty) and got about half the map uncovered (without actually exploring a good part of the locations yet) and it still sucks me in every time I start the game. Graphics are adequate to nice, the inventory system works rather well even if it's classical fallout style (with a bit of console flair) and not as fast as most MMORPG's. Sound effects are very well implemented IMO, with gun shots/salvos being very loud and boomy, while even small noises can be heard when sneaking through the wasteland and tunnels. Dialogues are done by seemingly pro speakers, if a bit dull/sterile at times. Quests are plentiful and make sense most of the time, even if some are a bit dull. A bit more of the classical Fallout humour would help, especially since the 3D makes the game intense at times. Put all together a very good game with a huge playing time, high replay value and hopefully a few nice extensions for later. If you don't get it now be sure to grab the GameOfTheYear/Gold/Budget or whatever edition will come out eventually. And sorry for those folks who have problems in running the game. Thankfully I only got random crashes once every 10 hours or so. And my machine is a tad old and rusty anyway and some other games crash too. GL and fingers crossed. Expand

Could have turned out a lot worse, but it is ok for a single play-through. We pretty much got what we expected - Oblivion with guns. The game has too many flaws in design, implementation, scenario, feel, voices to even mention. Nowhere near Fallout and especially Fallout 2, but comes close to Fallout Tactics.

@JeffC: There's no such thing as a water pistol in the game, and it doesn't have any multiplayer. We are talking about Fallout 3, not some childish disney game.
The game is perfect, from the graphics, to the character personalities. This game has it all, and it indeed deserves to be on the top 50. Although, I wish Bethesda could do something about those bugs that keep coming

Minor niggles aside, Fallout 3 is almost entirely spectacular. Everything from the graphics, to the sound, to the plot is first-rate. The VATS system worlds like a charm, and it’s so easy to get the hang of, you’ll be cracking skulls like there’s no tomorrow. [Dec 2008, p.55]

A vast and open world of unimaginable possibilities opens in front of you in Fallout 3. Great story, flawless combat system, and the option to choose your own way makes it a hot candidate for game of the year. [Nov 2008]
  3. Fallout 3 is one of this year's best games. It's an unforgettable journey that lives up to the series. You are an ex-vault 101 inhabitant, and you discover a whole new world, full of zombies, mutants, raiders, aliens and all kinds of creatures. Welcome to this post-apocaliptic reality, where you are going to spend hundreds of hours.
