They didn't make it a real time FPS to "make it easier to start with for new players" thats what a tutorial is for, not a whole game. The reason they made is that some people don't like TB strategy games.

Problem is that hardcore fallout fans won't like this and people who like FPS might not like the necessity of using VATS mode which slows the game down and takes control away from you.

Fact is the game is far away from FO3, not just in gameplay but visually the wasteland looks different. It looks alot more grey than FO3 is, not enough brown and green is missing that you should see "some" of, some plants here and there. Signs that the world is recovering.
    No Bosses. Missed opportunity.

The stories ending is also terrible, the story just felt empty at the end which is kind of really unforgivable for fallout. The endings are so abysmal, they do nothing to give any closure or even summarise all the trails and tribulations you had to go through upto that point.

Nice game, nice gameplay and nice story. If there were no new vegas, this could have been the best in its modern series.

I'll do a pros and cons for this review.

Pros: 1.) Atmosphere- While Fallout 3 had a different atmosphere than the original two, 3 still provides a great atmosphere and feel of the game. I'll do a pros and cons for this review.

    Pros:
1.) Atmosphere- While Fallout 3 had a different atmosphere than the original two, 3 still provides a great atmosphere and feel of the game. I really liked large amount 50s vibe it had to it. The 50s diners, cars, buildings, houses. This gives the game a unique twist and it defiantly makes 3 stand out from the pack. It's also gives a twist of irony of the 1950s 'life is good' feel to the bleak world you're in.

2.) The little things- Small things like leaving the Vault for the first time, hearing the wind whistle as you travel through the wastes, Dogmeat, Harold being a full tree, walking into Springvale for the first time, or the rust broken look of the hunting rifle, the list can go on. These small things really brings out some cool things that can really immerse you into the world and give a feeling of the atmosphere and the game in general.

3.) Soundtrack, both radio and the OST- I don't like Three Dog, but I do like the playlist. Most of the songs on the radio fit perfectly into Fallout 3's world it's almost unbelievable. It really contributes to bringing the wasteland too life. In fact, most of these songs are 'feel good' music of America's post World War II prosperity and again, it goes back to the irony of the 'feel good' music in a desolate wastes.

4.) Wasteland- It's well detailed and looks great. Every location has a something in it and the distinct 50s style brings it too life.

    CONS
1.) Story- My god is it awful. It violates the definition of an RPG game with choices. It's short, linear, and the choices you make are virtually non existent. The story forces you to play the hero and side with the good guys and make all the right choices. Not very much flexibility.

2.) Characters. Good characters can make a poor story better. But that's not the case. Most characters are generic and 2-D. They share the same personality and sometimes there voices seemed phoned in.
With James and among other character, it forces a personal attachment on you and the game plays off of that regardless whether you actually care about them or not.

3.) Black and white morality. The game assumes you want to play hero and almost expects you too. At least story wise. I don't know, it just seems to lean towards being a good guy. You can still commit heinous acts, but if you've seen some of the dialogue options and how the story plays, you'll understand.

Still Fallout 3 is a good game, great in fact. It captures an immersive bleak, 50s style post apocalyptic DC that's just a joy to explore (despite the oh so many metro tunels).

As for the DLCS- Operation Anchorage is the worst, as it leans toward a boring linear shooter and the rewards make the game way to easy. Mothership Zeta is the second worst, as the whole alien ship thing seems a bit wacky, even for Fallout 3.
Broken Steel is a must, as it lets you continue on from the ending. The story for isn't too bad either.
Point Lookout and The Pitt are the best. Capturing great atmosphere, characters, and story. The Pitt being the best as it forces you into a convincing moral dilemma.

This post-apocalyptic game is one of my favorite games, I have spent 35 hours of my life sitting on my couch lost in the unique post-apocalyptic open world of fallout 3. the one bad part is the fact that you can't continue playing the game after you beat the campaign unless you buy the Broken Steel dlc, which is a really lame move by Bethesda

A lot was guessed or completed by our imagination, because we couldn't see that much of that world, or of those characters. Therefore, it was obviously a challenge recreating this world in 3D with the subjective point of view you have with a traditional FPS. A lot was added to this world, although sometimes you do get the feeling of seeing bits of oblivion remixed in this Mad Max environment. Nonetheless, it's truly a great feeling to wander in these landscapes with the sunlight changing all the time, the moonlight taking over. You have a huge pleasure discovering new places, exploring and searching for small treasures or hints for a possible new adventure.

Actually, the game gives you so much, it makes you wish you could have some more. After hours and hours of playing it, I wished there could be more different weathers, like rain or thunder, that would affect stealth for example and then I wished there could be seasons that would bring changes in how you could navigate or fight in certain areas; or what species you would be more likely to encounter in the wild, etc. The game succeeds in being immersing, capturing your imagination, making you feel like being there; which makes all the things you would expect in real life more lacking than in any other games.

There are many great ideas like Agatha's song quests and its outcome. This kind of idea is wonderful and does make your imagination works a lot. And that's why you end up wishing it could have been even better. Same for the what your minds make you see in a certain vault.

We lost the turn-based combat system of the original Fallouts. And well I haven't missed it as much as I would have expected. It's a common mistake we, fallout fans, have made we have tended to think that the turn-based combat system was essential to the fallout spirit. In the end, it was just a way to render RPG combat that probably was more suitable for the interface we had. In fallout 3, combat are more nervous, and somehow, more fun. It's true that in many cases, you can't apply any kind of strategy, and VATS tends to feel like a convenient way to reminds you that you're not playing an FPS, and helps in reminding how good or bad your characer is at using that particular weapon.

Unlike what I've read in some other review, aiming an opponent's arm or leg will make a difference in how they move or fight. Crippling their heads makes their aim a lot more random. The only problem is you don't get to enjoy much of these advantages against common foes as them having a crippled member usually means they're one shot away from dying.

    Some of the negatives :
    - lots of glitches and bugs that can be quite annoying,
    - many quests are not that interesting, and feels more like an embryo of an idea.
    - The game lacks some obvious mechanisms. Whatever your character's specialization might be, he/she can wear any type of armor. Playing a stealthy ninja with a Tesla armor shouldn't be possible, should it ?
    - your character can become excellent in almost every skills and somehow the game doesn't give you any other way to fully enjoy all its secrets.
    - Companions are nice but limited and either cumbersome or way too powerful (especially with the add-ons, dogmeat becomes invulnerable for example). I would have rather see more specialized companions. Like, if you're no good in unlocking computers, you could hire a computer genius to do the cracking for you, which would have allowed a more specialized character evolution. Most of the time, I'm walking with Fawkes who does an excellent job as a mule, but who is very annoying in how he tends to shoot everything in sight without any sense of nuance. Shooting Radroaches with a laser gatling isn't really necessary, is it ?

There are a lots of shortcomings that I could list but most of them would fit better in a wishlist for a future game. For example, I wish character's interaction would be more credible. For instance, what you wear doesn't change how people sees you. I wish I could put an enclave armor to pretend I am from the enclave, or that my ghoul mask would put people off, or that Derek would react differently when I'm wearing the mechanist armor. As immersive this game might be, those kinds of details tend to kill that.

All in all, this game was a very ambitious game and while it doesn't entirely fulfill all its promises, it does give you an experience like none other. It's still one of the best games I've ever played. I'm 40 and I've played video games since I was 9. :D

The PC version looks a lot better than the PS3 version, but the PS3 manages to be very enjoyable and provides some eye candies.

8.4/10. Just like The Last of Us, it has a wonderful feel that you really can't put your finger on. The setting is remarkably different from TLOU, as the game satisfies a 50s-perception-of-the-future-plus-bombs, but how hopeless the world feels is simply beautiful as a setting, and this setting is dominant in both games. With that being said, this game does have a few obvious flaws.

For one, the story. It's a roleplaying game; the story should not be linear, and it should give your character a blank state instead of forcing you into a story you may not want (a.k.a the Vault 101 backstory). The other is the forced system. VATS should be a choice, not something you are forced into. Sure, you don't have to hit "V" every time you enter combat, but you'd might as well, considering that there are no iron sights.

Voice acting was heavily recycled; they should have hired more voice actors instead of having the same guy voicing almost half of the characters in the game. The world size is nice, but it's mostly the same designs recycled over and over again. Fallout 4 has a ton of potential, if it combines what is good about Fallout 3 and New Vegas alike.

I re-installed Fallout 3 from disk, (remember disks?), and have been having a great amount of fun in it. Of course the graphics are 2008 vintage, but GOOD vintage. The marvelous open world of Washington D.C., post bombs, is a deadly place crawling with absurd mutations and Mad-Max like gangs of survivors, and you simply go from place to place shooting them in the face with whatever weapons you can find. Sounds childish, and is, but in a childish glee-like fashion. The game seems to run well on my mid-low end PC, and I'm having mindless fun. The gameworld is actually HUGE, full of discoverable places much like other Bethesda open world games. i'm having huge amounts of fun, even after 6 years of ageing on this game engine.

I admit that I set off an atomic bomb in the survivor's town of Megaton, just to see the mushroom cloud.
Killed dozens of innocent people in doing so, but hey, whatcha gonna do? Cheers to Bethesda for making a game that's actually enjoyable after 6 years of ageing.

8/10 Would nuke innocent men, women , and children again. P.S., I thought that the early 1900's crooner soundtrack actually served as a chilling counterpoint to the wanton and gratuitous carnage.

Fallout makes the jump to first person, and while a glorious step in the right direction it suffers from some serious flaws. While many of these flaws may seem like minor nitpicks to a lot of them are serious issues. This fallows the same plot lineFallout makes the jump to first person, and while a glorious step in the right direction it suffers from some serious flaws. While many of these flaws may seem like minor nitpicks to a lot of them are serious issues. You play a character who will become known as the Lone Wander, at first wandering out of the Vault you grew up in, to search for your father. This fallows the same plot line where things expand from the main quest which evolves into a plot where you eventually end up having to save the world from a sinister evil force.

The good: Fallout finally reaching first person makes this game nearly amazing. Your first steps out of the vault presents you with a dire wasteland that seems to stretch on for ever. The game retains many of the mutant creatures we've all become familiar with in Fallout, and some new and interesting additions are wandering the wastes. The world is flushed, and if you pay attention to the NPCs you'll get quests galore. The game also encourages you to explore, and the more you explore the better a position you'll be in when you reach the end game. There are some amazingly well done moments in this game, and like the rest of the Fallout franchise there's some big voice talent backing the cast. The game also retains the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. primary stats, skill based derived stats, perks and traits system Fallout is famous for. With several expansions in the form of DLC that add hours of game play and even more fantastic stories to play through this game really does shine inspite of it's flaws. The best part, for PC gamers at least, is the mod-friendliness of the game, which will give the game life long after you've explored all the possibilities through multiple play throughs. The GECK program which is free from Bathesda's Fallout 3 site is also great and gives you the ability to modify the game to your heart's content if the creativity bug bites you. Also the game retains the ability to cripple the limbs of enemies either in real time combat, or using the V.A.T.S. targeting system.

The bad: Even when this game came out it had some issues, one of which is the graphics which were dated in 2008. I can't blame the game too much for this as it uses the same version of the Gamebryo engine that Oblivion used. Even with the latest updates this game has some bugs, though very few of them are game breakers. The story is a bit on the lack luster side until your father (voiced by Liam Neson) dies. As a hard core Fallout fan the biggest complaint is the fact that the game really eschews the lore of Fallout. There are quite a few things that don't fit, most of the energy weapons have been redesigned, the Vault doors look nothing like the ones in previous games, and worst of all power armor doesn't feel like well power armor. The game lacks a lot of the dark humor that populated the original two Fallout games, mixed with the depressing atmosphere this can make the game a arduous experience. The lack of any usable vehicles, or even a horse or mount of any kind makes treks through the wasteland exasperatingly long. The final offence is that you can only have 2 companions, while in previous game you it was based on your charisma stat, allowing up to 5 with max charisma, along with an extra with a certain perk.

Side note: The V.A.T.S. targeting system can sometimes feel useless because of the real time combat of the game. On the other hand it's always entertaining to watch a slow motion scene of an enemies head exploding when using V.A.T.S.

The final word: While a great game that does manage to capture most of the feel of Fallout it just doesn't quite live up to it's Isometric ancestors. The lore is a bit broken and it feels less Fallout than other Fallouts. Still it fits well enough in to the Fallout universe and style that even the most purist fans can appreciate it. It's a fantastic RPG despite it's flaws and for Fallout fans it's a great jump back in to the post nuclear apocalyptic retro 1950's sensibilities of a universe we've come to love. For RPG, FPS, and Fallout fans this game is a great addition to your library. Though it does feel more family friendly than previous instalments with the lack of Fallout's legendary sleaze factor, and lacking the ability to shoot people in the groins.

It's story is pretty much you find your dad who has left you behind in the vault they were living in.

But overall the game is great, customization is not limited, you can play countless of hours of missions and side missions. As well as you can play in a Gained Karma/Lost Karma (aka good/evil) and you can change the fate of most events and you can shape the story in different ways.

Overall I personally like it, it's one of my favourite games due to it's creativity but it does lose some points in some parts of the game. One the graphics and colour design just doesn't go well with the mood. And yes I know the gray colour scheme is supposed to present a "depressed" mood on fallout. But does everything have to be gray and gloomy. Also another thing I would have liked is cinematic scenes in fallout. I know it's trying to be a role playing game thus why you are always looking at a person at the front of the face. But lack of cinematic scenes makes the story too empty. I personally don't care about the story missions compared to the side missions because the story wasn't all that exciting to me. And cinematic scenes would have changed that.

But other then that I love this game, one of the best games of all time.

The game play, animations and A.I. has not aged well. While the DLC super tanked health/damage enemies can be an annoying grind in time and resources to put down. ( I deactivate the DLC till late game ). Another minor annoyance is the actual ability to use power armor only drops very late game. It is not even OP like in Fallout 4 so I use a power armor training mod off Nexus ( level 2 with 25 science requirements ).

I have spent hundred and hundreds of hours in the base game 99% unmodded on the PC and still do. Yes it does have a dated feel to it all now, but I don't care. In the fun department it has still stood the test of time, because I am still very much playing it.

Fallout 3 nailed the atmosphere of the series and did really good job at transfering Fallout universe to 3D environment. Exploring Vaults and settlements in capital Wasteland is a blast.
But the main story, dialogues and combat are very weak.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The First Fallout game made by Bethesda.
As a first step into the Franchise, I gotta say its a decent start.
The biggest difference between the first Fallout games and 3 is that this game is a shooter, but you're character's ability with weapons depends on you're skills with the many types of weapons that were present in the past games. This includes small guns, big guns, energy weapons, explosives, unarmed and melee weapons. The better the skill, the better you can use this weapon as your damage and accuracy goes up. However, the gun play has definitely aged as it is very clunky and it can be annoying to see you're weapon constantly spread out shots. But, the game uses V.A.T.S like the previous games where you can use it to quickly pot shot at certain points of the enemy you choose to die. This was the same for the past Fallout games as well.
As an RPG, you're decisions will effect the outside world and everyone's opinion of you. You're character will engage in dialogue a lot as they make decisions, speech checks and even interesting dialogue options based on certain perks you have. Ah yes, there are other skills as such barter, science and more that allow you to do certain actions with certain things.
However, I cannot recommend this game to new players due to it's clunky gameplay and "meh" gun play. But if you wanna take look into the Fallout games, this is a decent start.
This game's story is pretty good. you are born in a world of the atomic apocalypse caused in 2077. It has been 200 years since then and your Father leaves the Vault unexpectedly, and you must find him... you are the Lone Wanderer...

I think this game is as good as the previous two but better by having a much larger world and details for exploration. People thinks that you have just a few locations with beings to interact with but this is what makes it real. I won't expect to have packs and packs after such a tragedy on top of the evil humanity without law boundaries. The main story line is too short that's true, but i really have fun in exploring all those abandon buildings with no related quests. That's the point that you have to pay attention to the NPC in order to get to without a game guide. You could learn much better by checking out the fan wiki and find out that almost all of those are a reference. I would say after all these years it worth you of that 20 bucks if you found it in a bargain bin.

Edit: You can turn the game into a TPS or FPS anytime you want, you can always shoot by using VATS. That's what make me liked the game more and more since I hate shooter.

I couldn' t expect this game to be so good by reading some reviews. I fact there is everything I wish for a smart RPG: some interesting dialogs, a coherent and immersive world and a good leveldesign. The VATS system combat is also a great success and one of the keys of the hypnotic pleasure you get from playing a 3D fallout. Some people complain because this opus is not as fierce as the old ones, but I'm bored with the cynical writing in fiction work.

Add the nostalgia factor since this was my first Fallout game I'll give it an 8, because despite the flaws it's still built with love.

The game is quite impressive, even for today standards, despite some technical issues regarding to compatibility to the most updated systems and we are warned on Steam page that Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later.
But I managed to override those issues, and I could replay it again, and in the end the only thing that I could not get to work was the fact that Steam was not counting properly my game time.

The graphics are very good, for 2008 standards, and the map is huge. Traversing it and see all its destruction makes us feel lonely and in the end of the world. But we always can overcome that feeling with some music, and the 50's style music that we find in the radio make us think how the world was before.

It's an amazing experience, with countless hours of gameplay... Is a classic of the gaming history.
Fully recommend it, a "must have" to any gaming collection.

Another thing that pulls the game down a bit, is the glitchy nature of it. Again, much like Skyrim, Fallout 3 can have some gamebreaking bugs on rare occasions, but it's made up for by the glitches that doesn't break the game, but instead causes a varying amount of hilarity or humorous confusion, like a super mutant's corpse falling from the sky, a friendly NPC's face turning into inside-out, or perhaps stepping on a wrong rock, but it turns out to be a magical rock that shoots you into space and gives you a lovely view of the entire playable zone, only to fall all the way back down, but you don't die. You'll never know what you experience, while exploring the Capital Wasteland.

It seems under every rock you find an interesting character with a unique and unexpected quest. Honestly, I wanna say everything here is near perfection, this is one of my all time favorite games. Between mods and the vanilla, there is a huge amount of content to dig up here. I love the V.A.T.S. system, it keeps this game from being just another FPS with level ups, to a live action turn based combat game almost. Why, if I love this game with such a passion is it an 8 out of 10 then?

Windows 10 makes this game nigh unplayable on modern systems. You can get it to run. As a matter of fact I think GoG actually just sells it out of the box ready to play. But steam's version is a mess unless you put some work into it.

The graphics are extremely dated, even when first released in 08, and there's a few bugs riddled throughout this game.

The game boasts player choice and its effect on the endgame, but in reality, that's just not there. And if you go into the game knowing this.. well, it's just fine. Never effected my personal playthroughs because I didn't have any expectations there really. But as I grew older I realized it was kind of lame.

Nonetheless, minus these few gripes, I personally think every other aspect of this game is just.. perfection. As I said, I think this is one of the all time greats, and it's definitely in my top 5.

To start, I must say that I met the franchise for New Vegas, since Fallout 3 simply refuses to run on modern PCs, so I played the PS3 version, which is not perfect, but runs well. It has some light frame drops and crashed two or three times.
I will try to be neutral and succinct in this analysis, without comparing the two games. However, I say that a series of items and possibilities created by Obisidian (such as the superstimpacks, the weapon repair kit, among others) in its masterpiece are missing, and would be really good to have them. Still Fallout 3 is an excellent game, where Bethesda Game Studios got it right in many ways, making a game that was revolutionary in its day.
The game starts smoothly, where we create our character and see him grow inside Vault 101, we receive our Pip-Boy and we have the combat tutorial. Then suddenly our protagonist's life is turned upside down, when his father leaves the Vault without authorization, arousing the ire of the Overseer. So we have to run for our lives, entering the desolate lands of post-nuclear war Washington for the first time.
I begin by highlighting the similarities with the first Fallout, where we also control a 19-year-old who is forced to leave the Vault and face the “outside world”. At the beginning we only have a pistol, little ammunition, some melee weapon, some stimpacks and the most expert players will already have some simple armor, from the guards who dared to cross our path during the escape.
Now we must explore this open world, to find our father. The map is not that big, but at the time it was quite impressive. We have several different environments to explore, with many interesting locations, giving us the feeling that each of those places has its own history, which we would like to know.
Our choices matter a lot, we can be a hero or a villain, according to the Karma system. Personally I prefer the path of goodness, which gives the feeling of accomplishment, in addition to bringing some extra rewards, like the items I earn every time I go to Megaton, for saving the city.
In addition to the main quest, which is very linear, simple, relatively short and can be completed in a few hours. However players who like to explore and hunt for good items will take around 40 to get everything, reach the maximum level, with the best weapons and armor. My complaint is that the maximum level is 20, which I consider low, forcing the player to be very wise and careful when it comes to evolving his character. I believe that is why it takes so long to gain another level.
As for secondary quests, we have one in each city or larger location, with several inhabitants. There aren't many, but they are enough to explore the map more and earn good items. I even completed almost all of them, except for one that would make me lose karma and one that was given by slave owners, who were too dead to talk to me.
Still, we are not obliged to know most of the scenario. There are several Vaults that I didn't even get to, because I thought I could go there later. Anyway, it depends on each player.
The enemies are not many and a little repetitive, but they are interested and good to face, forcing us to act differently with each one of them. A serious problem is its hit detection, which will only register its attacks if we hit them right in the center. Often the aim will be red, but because it is not precisely aimed, we will only be wasting ammunition, which is not that abundant.
Another complaint I have is regarding the durability of the items. The weapons wear out very quickly, requiring constant repairs. Armors look like they are made of paper because they wear out very fast, even power armor. So much so that this problem was corrected in the successor games.
However, like any good RPG, it is very pleasant to get stronger and stronger, to be able to go where and when you want, in addition to being able to do what you want, reaching one of the various endings, each player being able to reach the one they prefer. Weapons are good and efficient, NPCs are interesting to talk to, each place has an aura of desolation and mystery, and should be well explored, for the maximum benefit of the player.
Finally, I say that Fallout 3 is a sensational game. It has a simple plot, but with gameplay and exploration that stand out, good and addictive. The player will be swallowed up in that post-apocalyptic environment, wanting to stop just seeing the credits. Even more considering its low price today and low processing requirements, in addition to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, as well as backward compatibility with the Xbox One.
    Pros:
Great and good game to explore
    Many good items
    Interesting quests
    Large scenario with many locations
    Cons:
    Hit detection issues
    Eventual crashes
The game does not use its scenario to the fullest, leaving it up to the player whether or not to explore

Not too bad... For a 2008 game. The wasteland looks very good and brutal, same with the armors of the characters. Point Lookout DLC also was very good. But yeah, for a 2008 game, it did a lot of beautiful things. Today tho the game is just bad, play New Vegas if you want an actual GOOD Fallout. Fallout 3 is just a poor version of New Vegas... it lacks too much.

The game was really dark and atmospheric when it came out. A solid feeling of a post-apocalyptic world, cruelty everywhere, characters have believable stories and quests. The disadvantages include a rather high difficulty, but it also adds more sense of survival

However, if you took out the RPG elements, you'd be left with a clunky feeling FPS. Gameplay just doesn't feel polished enough. The story is simple and uninspiring compared to the stories of either Fallout 1 or 2. The visuals are mostly unimpressive. Weapon effects are nice and flashy, but character models are stiff and awkward looking, with noticeable seams at the neck and hands where the textures don't match up. Yes, the terrain is vast, and many of the issues that Bethesda's previous game, Oblivion, have either been fixed or reduced, such as the distant terrain mesh noticeably rearranging itself and objects jarringly popping in. However, the terrain is also very dull. I don't necessarily mean the small range of colors you'll see. What I mean is that few locations feel truly unique. Voiceovers have been substantially improved over Oblivion, with surprisingly few characters sounding alike. Unfortnately, this comes at the cost of every "town" having roughly in between 3-10 citizens. These towns feel sparse compared to the towns of Fallout 1 or 2. The traditional Fallout atmosphere is there, but it feels watered down. I can't really blame Bethesda for this, because they obviously tried very hard to get the atmosphere spot on. I think it may be due to the fact that everything is rendered in 3d this time around, and every character has a voice. It leaves less to the imagination. Is it better than an unmodded Oblivion? Yes! Is it better than Fallout 1 and/or 2? Unfortunately, no. Expand

Ultimately for a Fallout game this was mediocre at best. For Bethesda however, this is a very good start. I was going to give it a lower score however the GECK (the SDK) was actually released. I'm sure by using the GECK the Fallout 3 community will be able to fix Bethesda's mistakes and turn this into a true Fallout sequel instead of Oblivion with guns.

I can't believe that Bethesda went to all this effort of making a superficially great game and got the play balance so wrong. MAJOR SPOILER - I also have major issues with the plot at the end. Unlike oblivion, there is no weather effects, in the PC version there is no button to holster your weapon(assuming because they ran out of buttons on the xbox controller), there is no sound when you reload, there is some serious issues with continuity, and there are some really lame bugs in the game. Not bugs that crash the game, just bugs that make you say "that's dumb". I've played it for about 20hrs now, and its becoming a little repetitive, there is no creature or situation that I can get knocked down below 1/2 health. This is a game that is better than most games on the market currently, but it really is not much of an RPG, it belongs with in the basket with Bioshock and half-life 2. So if you like those FPS, you'll love this, it will be a challenge and a change. This may become an more intensive RPG game in the future, IF the release the editor so modders can get a hold of it and make some improvements/corrections. Aside from the setting and story, almost everything is similar to Bethesda's fantasy RPG; from the menu system and mechanics to the graphics engine and playstyle (the VATS targeting system notwithstanding), there's nothing you haven't seen before. It seems like Bethesda took the easy road and decided "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". That's not necessarily bad, but it's not necessarily good either. The good: the main storyline is sweet, but short; tons of locations to explore along with tons of quests; VATS kicks butt; lots of weapons and items to find; unique characters and situations; good variety of NPC voices. The bad: Bethesda is still using the archaic menu system they implemented with Oblivion, which means there's no weapon cycle mapping allowed, and there's only one key to access your entire character menu; the graphics engine is starting to show its age; the many locations all start to look the same after a while (pure laziness on Bethesda's part); the main quest is waaaay too short; not enough character and creature variety; gameplay doesn't seem to change much when higher stats and new skills are added to your character. Certainly not a terrible game, but it's not "the best game of our generation" as many critics are claiming. I have a feeling that, as was the case with Oblivion, the excitement will wear off after a couple years and people will see Fallout 3 for what it really is: a fun game, but nothing groundbreaking or life changing. Maybe a 5 at the minimum but not 0. I just finished the game and although I'm a bit disappointed (the ending sucked bad) I did enjoy many moments in the game, I played on the good side I tried to do good things and so thats where my game lead me. Pros: - A truly large and expansive world - Models, textures, and overall look of the world is good - Locations are many and varied (with the exception of vaults) - Combat is fun, challenging, and engrossing when enemies die in viscous ways - Weapons have a nice 'punch' like shotguns or missile launchers - Side quests, although lacking in complexity and immersion, are somewhat interesting - Main quest is good with many unexpected (thus pleasant) surprises - The lock pick system is by far the most well done of any I've seen in a game before. - Hacking was enjoyable at the start, but gets boring later. - Has the same comedy as the original Fallout Cons: - Although early on combat is quick and fun later I found it to lack tactics. It quickly become *pew pew* *heal* and repeat - The handy radar system tells you the direction of enemies and allies when your close to them (within a hundred feet or so) This is a bad thing because it makes adventuring less exciting when all you need to do is look down to check if you in danger, no one can sneak up on you. - Its stupid how you can eat dozens of things and use dozens of stimpacks instantly to heal at anytime. - Often controls are unresponsive, such as going to your inventory or opening doors while being shot at - The conversations, quests, and A.I all have the same problems they did in Oblivion The conversations lacked any interesting dialogue, choices were limited and many times made no sense. The quests were semi interesting but could have been much much better The A.I. is horrible, both in combat and not. Ex. The sheriff of a town was killed, the sheriff was an incredibly important person in the town yet no one reacted at all to his death except for his son which only changed his dialogue choices. - Combat becomes boring and annoying later when it might take a few clips to kill one person. I had 100 small guns and It still took me multiple clips to kill someone. - The game had many errors, like leather jackets in the vault, and the errors pertaining to the Fallout universe. - Karma made no big difference. - Enclave shoots you on sight though they really have no reason to attack you. In Conclusion: It's worth playing but it isn't all that great. Graphics are good. Combat is fun at the start, stale at the end. Quests are sub-par. A.I. and immersion is horrible. Expand

Before I start, let me go ahead and clarify that I havn't played any of the Fallout games, even those considered non-canon. I'm a big fan of Bethesda. Now, I can Before I start, let me go ahead and clarify that I havn't played any of the Fallout games, even those considered non-canon. I'm a big fan of Bethesda. Not just for the Elder Scrolls, but also for some of the games they've published like Call of Cthulhu. When I figured out they were remaking Fallout, I thought it would be a good time to get in on the Franchise. Now, I can see the comparisons with Oblivion. The MELEE combat is almost identical. The way you interact with the world is pretty spot on as well. But in my opinion, the engine is where the similarities end. For one, Fallout 3's world doesn't even have a flavor of Oblivion. It's dark. It's gritty. And in places like Downtown DC, it is pretty obvious that there's few safe havens. There's alot of scrounging early on, though I will admit that it does get easier to find mid ranged equipment and ammunition, but stuff like Mini Guns and Mini Nukes stay relatively rare. As for combat, melee, like I said, is very similar to Oblivion. However, I went with guns, more specifically energy weapons. Let me say that it operated NOTHING like Oblivion's bow and arrow, or even spells. Each weapon felt considerably different. Firing my pea shooting 10mm was far and away different than the gatling gun or missile launcher. Now, the game could have easily gotten a 9 out of 10 or even a perfect score, but I did have a few complaints: First, the characters were pretty bland. The only characters I really cared for at all were Fawkes, Butch, and Amata, but even these characters didn't have enough depth or related quests. You couldn't even ask much about their past, or how they felt about certain things. Dogmeat, one of the only announced followers. was awful. Yea, he could be sent to go get stuff, but he acted very little like a real dog, which I guess is kind of biased after playing fable ii. I mean it just followed behind me and alot of the time I had to look behind me to make sure he was following. In fable ii the dog would bark, run ahead of you, and interact with other people. Which will kind of fit into my last complaint. Second, the different factions don't really feel that alive. The Enclave felt like it had field operations going on, but you almost never saw the Brotherhood of Steel doing anything important save for a few instances. And last, in the 4 years since Oblivion, they weren't able to add any kind of dynamic content to the world. Roving bands, yea sure, people who talk to one another, ok, shops that close, alright. But come on. You never have more than 2 people talking to each other. Those roving bands are just that. Roving bands; they never interact with anything. And you can learn very little from the people themselves. You talk to them, get all the information they have initially, and then you never have to go back to them. They have nothing to reveal about current events, or the past. Still, small complaints from a game that accomplishes so much. Much more than alot of the other games that have come out. And to the people who DID play Fallout who don't believe it stays true: Despair, black humour, and violence. That's what I understand made the series. Well it's all there. If you're complaints are about leaving the turn based system, or the non isometric view: That's evolution of technology. I don't want strategy. I want immersion, story, graphics, AND strategy. All of these are in the game. Expand

I'm not sure why anyone in their right mind would get from the start of this game to the end of it if it were not a video game, but a story for a movie. What's my motivation, people? There really is only one character class. That's called the action hero. In Fallout 1 and 2 it was nearly possible to talk your way through the entire game. It was possible to be a melee character. Here there is one. Shoot stuff. gain levels. Shoot stuff. Unconvincely convince people of pointless things. So I hate to say it but they have put out a wonderful looking but unrepentantly boring game with a lot of bugs. In the end I don't k now why I played through the whole thing and can't quite remember what it was all about. Compare that to Fallout 1, where almost a decade later and I still rememeber.. The Master and his creepy base, or the first time i saw ghouls or when I first broke into the "Military Base" to see the mutated inhabitants. There are all of the pieces of a great game here, but unconvincely placed into an ill thought out and uninspired story. I have to admit fighting my way through the subway with ghouls popping out every corner was thrilling but I have to ask myself. WTF was I even doing down there in the first place? I think I was looking for the story for a game that has none. Expand

Oblivion with guns? Very much so, for better or worse. Oblivion wasn't my type of game, and I'm afraid that F3, despite having brilliant atmosphere, is't cutting it as well. My main gripe with this game is that Bethesda willingly chose to discard a lot of acknowledged achievements in cRPG design that have happened lately. Dialogue system is quite simply abysmal, in a post-Mass Effect world. A lot of lines are too long, or too short, depending on situation. Voice acting is acceptable, but the moral system is severely lacking, and the fact that time "freezes" when you talk to someone doesn't help immersion at all. Now I don't really like sandbox games as in my opinion -too much- of free roaming puts you off the main quest, and story is what I value the most in cRPG's. Thats exactly the case with F3, as with Oblivion - in the midst of exploration I tend to loose track of why am I doing all this in the first place. It doesn't matter that the main quest is intriguing, if it gets lost in the midst of countless hours spent on exploring a beautiful and atmospheric but ultimately boring world. And having a completionist soul, focusing on just the main quest, which is maybe 10% of what the game has to offer, doesn't satisfy me. All in all it's not a game for people who don't have too much free time on their hands. Last but not least, I find it has actually very little in common with original Fallouts. Sure, times have changed, but it seems that apart from artistic direction, there is no feel, humor and atmosphere of the original games here. And I do believe that's another consequence of Bethesda not being able to get over their own game design method. I respect their choice, and obviously they are happy (too happy imo) with the results they are getting - but I'm not. All in all, Fallout 3 isn't the game I was waiting for, and instead is "only" an enjoyable experience. Expand

Main story line was too short and the final parts were too easy. There were a lot of side quests, but a story driven gamer will feel rushed by the main story and can easily beat the game without doing 90% of the side quests. The AI opponents run at you very fast, but not in a very intelligent manner. Great look and feel. Good implementation of several game devices. I agree that the thing that will make this game an 8 or 9 will be the Mod community as BS did not spend enough time with the plot of the vanilla box. Expand

Decent game, but a lot of space for improvements (thank you modders!). Can't see how it got 92% though. Anyway, it was pretty fun playing this game. You got all these customization you can do - facial features (but somehow you can't change your body shape - you could do it in Van Buren), skills, decisions, etc. Then you get to explore a huge world with awesome graphics, an Decent game, but a lot of space for improvements (thank you modders!). And it's really easy to learn how to play this game too. The VATS was interesting for a while and it helps you get through tight spots. Some side quests are good, e.g. Moira's. And oh, I love the music. The radio station is a darn good concept. But as usual there are flaws. First of all, it's really easy to get stuck - so save often, or just use the console. It's really frustrating when you spent 15 minutes killing off a horde of super mutants then get stuck when you were exploring in some rubbles. Then there is the poor AI (I'm not sure if higher difficulties fixes that). For example, enemies tend to get stuck with obstacles and that gives you infinite time to finish them off. Another example is extremely aggressive allies that will attack high level enemies with bare hand. Walking around in the wasteland can be pretty tiresome. Yeah running speed is too slow - could have had a sprint button or something like that. NPCs can be a bit bland - they are not as fleshed out as in Fallout e.g. not as emotional or as sarcastic. Facial animations are really bad haha. I was playing Half-Life 2 and I was surprised with the facial animation - and that was released at the end of 2004... hm. Games too easy - you can be a jack of all trades and be the master of everything. Takes a lot of traps to kill you too. Yeah that's right, everything. Strategy and smart allocation of skill/char points/ perks doesn't seem as vital now since they don't really critically affect what you can do and poor management doesn't seem to cripple you as much as in Fallout. Main quest is not that interesting imo - in the end it seems like a chore and no better than some of the better side quests. One thing I sorely missed was the element of randomness. E.g. in Fallout, sometimes when you attack you critically miss and drop your weapon, or you hit so hard that the enemy passes out, etc. In Fallout 3 eventually everything becomes kinda routine. And one thing that baffles me is the disappearance of the ability to retrieve ammo from a gun (or maybe I missed it). Again it's a decent game. I would say it's a watered down, adapted-to-casual-gamers version of Fallout. An analogy would be those non-technical scientific books written for the mass rather than for intellectuals in that field, you get what I mean? Expand

Eh... I never had any problems with crashing, I ran the game with Windows XP 64 bit. The game was REALLY fun... all the way until the ending. I have lots to say but not enough ways to say it. so in short this is a good game, buy it, have fun. but don't expect a fallout game like th first 2. this game lacks depth and is mediocrity short. The combat is interesting but at times a pain. Ending is terrible, and the game is more abouting completing missions than exploring a nuked out city. needs more incentive to explore (sinceI have lots to say but not enough ways to say it. so in short this is a good game, buy it, have fun. but don't expect a fallout game like th first 2. this game lacks depth and is mediocrity short. I give it 7 as Oblivion with guns. If I were to score this as a game as a Fallout game the score would be 4. This game sufferes from all the problems of Oblivion. These being 1) A really stupid plot, with too short and linear a main quest. 2) Incredibly annoying unskippable mini-games. 3) Weak NPC scripting and poor voice acting. 4) An interface designed for consoles that doesn't take I give it 7 as Oblivion with guns. Minor niggles aside, Fallout 3 is almost entirely spectacular. Everything from the graphics, to the sound, to the plot is first-rate. The VATS system worlds like a charm, and it’s so easy to get the hang of, you’ll be cracking skulls like there’s no tomorrow. [Dec 2008, p.55]
