Extreme Exorcism makes a mistake that a lot of indie games before and after it have also made - it comes up with a fairly unique idea for a mechanic that would be pretty cool as a small part of a larger, more fleshed out game and makes it the whole point of the entire game. If you think "battle your past selves doing exactly what you did in previous lives" is a cool concept, then neat,Extreme Exorcism makes a mistake that a lot of indie games before and after it have also made - it comes up with a fairly unique idea for a mechanic that would be pretty cool as a small part of a larger, more fleshed out game and makes it the whole point of the entire game. If you think "battle your past selves doing exactly what you did in previous lives" is a cool concept, then neat, you'll probably get a scant few minutes of fun out of this game before it gets unbearably old and you want something more. If you don't think it's particularly cool, then bad news, this game has nothing else to offer aside from that one sentence and a couple different weapons and stage hazards.

One fun mechanic does not make an entire game worth playing.

Taking everything into consideration, I'd have to say that while I like the novelty of the ghost enemies mimicking the player's actions, once that novelty wears off you begin to notice the cracks and things begin to feel repetitive. The challenge levels extend the game's life, but overall it's probably the kind of game that you'll play for a little bit and then not be particularly compelled to return to.

It needs multiplayer to truly work. It really, REALLY needs it. When played with friends it’s a magnificent ode to chaos, but alone... yeah, it’s pretty repetitive and dull.

    It’s a simple premise that’s executed perfectly.
