Good for an hour or so, here or there. The core mechanics are more akin to MMO combat than any kind of actual shooter. Not much skill required, no real resource management, the fights are drawn out and lack any real tension, nothing else on the map is anything more than food or a unwarranted distraction.

If you want something that's simple and has co-op, this could do. Cool in concept.

This game ks not bad. Its fun but the DLC thing gives it a wound in the heart. They need to work that out. We need games to be affordable not so high in price. It has a good number of maps, 4 hunters and 3 monsters. Its only only and maybe repetitive. Its fun but nothing ground breaking.

Heaven forbid they create a game where you unlock all of the content by, "gasp" playing the game and progressing in your level (rank). Where did that philosophy of gaming go? Oh that's right it died out when games like CoD and Madden's Ultimate Team came out that allowed lazy gamer's the ability to become an elite player by buying their way into the higher ranks instead of grinding and doing it the old skool way. Its just sad. I'll buy the game eventually because I loved the concept of the game.

Graphics were good. Replayability is high. But the price of the game and the microtransactions kill the gaming experience for me.

Besides that: I don't see why alternative playable characters are, all of a sudden, such a problem. I remember how Borderlands 2 had the same strategy giving pre-orders Gaige as a character and everyone else had to pay for her (and she wasn't cheap either...). I don't remember any horde being mad about that back then. But now with all of that lies floating around, even the media spreading it for some parts, everyone is all of a sudden so mad about that. People are overreacting.

The game is pretty good, the (upcoming!) DLC is not necessary and doesn't split any communities, like other games, because maps are free.

I think it would be practical to have the assault class the slowest, and the medic the most agile etc but there not. You can however pre-match select perks like say 200% jump height or a damage/defence buff which does add a compelling element and keeps things spicy. And there is a online campaign (reminiscent of titanfall) which lasts for a few hours. The game does boast a innovative feature in which the online campaign called "evacuation" when the hunters/monster wins a match they upon starting the next match gets a in-game buff to help them out in the form of a turret, toxic cloud etc. I also have noticed no immersive on-screen elements like screen bob when you fall, recoil through pro-longed firing etc. Plus there are 4 characters behind a day one paywall, but there is also free future map packs. Graphics are extremely poor for 2015, with teture pop in, clipping etc. Overall a fun game, but little to compel you to play it for long :) Expand

Evolve is the most fun game that I've played in years, it is a masterpiece of asymmetrical PvP and Co-op. A lot of people who are reviewing this game are mad about the DLC which I feel creates a completely unreasonable and biased opinion, but since it a popular topic, it needs to be discussed.

Evolve, like any other $60 "AAA" title is obviously a $60 game. Like every other "AAA" game, it is releasing DLC. You know what it isn't doing? Setting paywalls, separating players, and charging for maps.

Maybe this is news to you? You don't have to have any of the DLC to play Evolve, it is a full game, and you can play with anyone regardless of the DLC that they have. In fact, you can even play as the DLC characters without having the DLC. If a player drops out, or you play with bots, you can switch to the DLC characters. Also, unlike every other "AAA" game, maps are free!

Okay, I hope that handled your doubts about the DLC, let's move onto the game itself.

Game-play - 9.5/10 - Evolves game-play is incredibly smooth, and all of the controls feel very tight. You play either as a powerful hulking monster, or a team of 4 hunters. The game is very well balanced and each hunter and monster has relevant strengths and weaknesses. The campaign (Evacuation mode) is a short series of 5 games, with over 800,000 possible randomized LARGE differences. The replay value of this game is incredibly high, and I do not see myself getting bored of it anytime soon. I feel that the game can almost be classified as a MOBA and it is definitely more entertaining, fast-paced, and dynamic than any MOBA out there. Teamwork is ESSENTIAL to your success as a hunter, if you prefer to play solo, the monster is a good choice for you. The only reason it gets a 9.5 is that, if you are playing as hunter, a teammate can grief you, or feed, etc. Which is a problem in every MOBA. Even my friends who are not interested in shooters, or my die-hard CS friends were incredibly impressed with evolves game-play.

Graphics - 10/10 - The game looks beautiful because it runs on Cry-engine, the art is very well done. Occasionally the maps seem a bit too similar, but they each have defining features that make them unique. The monsters and hunters all look great. Better graphics than any COD, CS, or MOBA that will play.

Sound - 9.5/10 - The sound is clear, and is essential to finding the monster. The voice acting is excellent and witty or relevant lines will be keeping you on your toes the whole time. The sound also functions as cues for the players on both teams. "Dome up" "Shield coming down" etc. The monsters roars sound incredible.

Overall - 9.75/10 - Evolve is an amazing game, a unique masterpiece that deserved all of its awards at E3 etc. The progression system (unlocking skins/character mastery) manages to be enticing without feeling too grindy. You will not get bored of Evolve anytime soon.

Yet another reminder that pre-purchasing any game is a bad idea. I pity all the players who just see the score of 83 on steam thinking it is an awesome game and pay 50€ for this. 50€ for this is just a fraud.

Not enough content to be worth $80. Simple as that. Check out the store page for yourself. Its a game that milks its customers. Wait for the game to be the inevitable GOTY bundle, vote with your wallets, and stop letting game companies think these kinds of business practices are fine.

It's fun and the different modes make for a nice get away from the traditional mode after thirty or so matches in a row. After simply taking a break or playing some of the other game modes, I was happy to come back to it. Each match plays out differently and often requires you to actually consider going about your own play style differently from the previous match. It depends on their comp every time. I love that in a game. Some methods work better than others.

DLC. The thing most of everyone is crying about. I'll start off by saying that you don't need to buy -anything- to enjoy the game's upcoming content. Even if you don't spend a single penny, the upcoming maps are free, the upcoming modes are free, and the thing that isn't free is actually playing the new monsters and characters. Get this though... You can still play alongside people who have the new characters and play against the new monsters! Yes, you can use them yourself, but you can at least play with the people who are playing as them. The DLC is optional and doesn't exclude you from anything except actually playing the upcoming characters.

That said, the DLC content is pricey. So yes, that is a con in itself. The fact I'm not forced to buy it and can still play games that involve it though? That makes me happy... And again. Upcoming MAPS AND MODES ARE FREE. League of Legends is a good comparison. Even if you don't personally own the champions and skins, you still see them in game. Evolve works in the same manner.

Overall? I'm happy with this game and while I can't say I'll be jumping on all of the DLC due to the price, it's nice to know it won't hinder my experience. I know this was helpful for anyone who may of been on the fence about getting this game.

    I'd recommend it.

I'm glad this game requires such an intense amount of teamwork to be successful. Some people are giving it a low score because they don't have any friends to join them. I'm glad they don't have friends. No one should associate with someone with the mindset to give a game a low score because they don't have any friends. Some people are giving it a low score because the rounds in this game take longer than they have free time. Again, that is such a moronic reason to give the game a low score.

Should you buy it if that's the case? No. Should you add that detail when friends ask you if you suggest they check out the game? Yes. But don't go and give it a bad rating. Oh hey, I don't have $400k in expendable cash to go buy a Lamborghini... I guess I should go trash talk it on the internet since the creators didn't tailor their worldwide product to the very specific aspects of my life. It's unbelievable how entitled and self centered gamers are these days.

The matchmaking is fast, the maps are great, the gameplay is fluid, the various roles complement each other very well. It is true you must like cooperative, team-based play because that is what this game is all about. And it is definitely best to play with your mic turned on so that you can communicate with your teammates. Also, for some reason many reviews are comparing this game to Titanfall…they are not even in the same league. If you are a hunter, then Evolve forces you to play as a team if you want to win…and if you are the monster then your strategy is to escape, evolve, and then kill all of the hunters. In Titanfall you can around and Rambo…no need to play as a part of the team at all. Everyone knows the premise of the game - been plenty of media on that. 4 hunters vs. 1 monster and vice versa, so I won't get into that.

    Pros:
    - Graphics are quite good as well as sound effects.
    - Entertaining maps.
    - Interesting concept, almost like playing against or as a boss monster in every round.
    - Unique hunter skill sets.
    - Ability to play as a monster or hunter.

    Cons
    - Monster POV is frustrating.
    - Best play is co-op, but opportunities of having your own team/friends to do this are small.
    - Play gets repetitive.
    - Awfully noisy, especially solo. Lots of character shouts, multiple weapons going on, monsters screaming. After a while, it sounds like you've put your head in a trash compactor and it won't stop.

All in all, I'd quantify it as a good, but not great game. Not yet at any rate. My biggest beef is with the monster POV. Hard to tell when to jump, when to climb because it is difficult to judge distances, and more often than not, I'd find my monster facing a wall when I tried to use one of the special attacks.

The co-op portion is frustrating. I won't play co-op games unless I'm with people I know because what you get off the servers is 99 times out of 100, some 12 year old foul-mouthed kid who thinks they know everything. So this being a new (and expensive) game, means that co-op opportunities for me are going to be little to none until my friends slowly pick up the game as the price drops. BUT...if you can get a group together, it's a very entertaining co-op.

So solo - I give the game a 6, co-op with friends I give it an 8, average it out for a 7 score. Might update it later with more game play, but that's where I have it with a little over eight hours play involved.

The DLC problem that everyone is focusing on is simple, don't buy the DLC. You can still get the game enjoy the base characters and any new maps they will add. It works the same as all the dlc stuff borderlands 2 had, or any COD has had, BF4 had, and even the last two gears had. All the DLC stuff is adding a few extras down the line so they could give the game out now instead of delaying what is already done and complete ti finish a monster and 4 hunters.

There is enough content here to justify the purchase for sure. There's a reason the only downside people are writing about is pricing, it's because the game is really good and poor business practices hindered it slightly. It's a shame because a lot of people will probably be missing out.

All the DLC, monsters, hunters, skins plus an actual campaign, would be about enough content for a 60 dollar game, but as it is, you pay 60 for the game, 15 for one of the next monsters, I'd assume 15 for the 5th monster, 6.99 for each set of monster skins, and like, what was it, 3.99 for the weapons skins

Listed like that, you're looking at nearly 200 bucks for all the content that would maybe be worth 40-50, total joke.

At least it's fun like I said, so if you already bought it like me, silver lining?

Tell me again how you gave this game a zero? Really? People are seriously whining about game companies and stuff while they are giving ridiculous reviews here. You really think you're any better than those guys when you can't even review a game honestly. 0 means game is completely unplayable and broken. How about next time reviewing the game, not only the dlc's and companies. And then youTell me again how you gave this game a zero? Really? Yes. This game is pretty overpriced, dlc's are cancer almost in every game nowadays and evolve have f*cking store like the game and dlc's didn't cost enough. But the game itself is pretty good, at least with friends while hanging out in mumble/ts3/etc. Solid 8 for me when playing with friends, 7 if playing with bots/random guys who've never played with mouse and keyboard before (at least it feels like that). But these dick moves, day one dlc and 50 euros for example, makes me to lower score to 6. It just feels greedy.

So guys, please, try to contain your tantrums and rage a little bit while writing a review. This game doesn't deserve 0. While in my opinion it doesn't deserve ten either, it's still better than your butthurt-zeros. Grow up, really.

High reviews are just shills and people trying to justify their purchase. This game is a desperate attempt to milk customers for cash. Minimal launch content and plans for very expensive DLC.

You can all but master what's currently available in a couple of hours. Buy the GOTY edition.

I'm playing this with a friend that was dumb enough to buy this and developers/publishers should be ashamed of this garbage. The "game" itself is 60$ + Hunter DLC+Monster DLC+More DLC = around 180$ is the actual price. They probably cut the game to make this or is years apart of being a full game.

Now to the apologist therapy group should be doing a simple math, before claiming that

So to end this nightmare the game itself is a Poor Mp-Fps (titanfall, destiny both epic compared to this), in 3h/4h you can see everything the game has to offer and unless you can recruit 3-4 idiots to pay/play this quick cash grab, skip it or at least grab it on a sale for 20$ or less.

This is EA level of stupidity in regards to DLC, and the unnecessary fracturing of a complete game, all for the sake of the almighty dollar.

    Pathetic.

This is greed at it's worst. If you can't have a halfway decent revenue model for your game without pissing off literally almost ALL of the community then what was the point to begin with?
Oh yeah, console drones ARE that dumb.

Evolve is unquestionably one of the best multiplayer games to arrive in the last few years.

When Evolve plays nice and doesn’t annoy you with technical problems, it is kind of fun, provided you play not more than one campaign a day. But, really, you can get the same fun in any decent f2p shooter. Like Team Fortress 2, for example.

Imbalanced and repetitive to a disappointing degree, but when it hits the mark it can be great. [April 2015, p.56]
