Here's a review from someone who has actually played the game for a few hours. Not like those who within minutes of the game release automatically give it a 10 because they are fanbois, or are haters who automatically give it a zero because of some personal pet peeve and most likely don't even own the game.

Everyone knows the premise of the game - been plenty of media on that. 4

Everyone knows the premise of the game - been plenty of media on that. 4 hunters vs. 1 monster and vice versa, so I won't get into that.

    Pros:
    - Graphics are quite good as well as sound effects.
    - Entertaining maps.
    - Interesting concept, almost like playing against or as a boss monster in every round.
    - Unique hunter skill sets.
    - Ability to play as a monster or hunter.

    Cons
    - Monster POV is frustrating.
    - Best play is co-op, but opportunities of having your own team/friends to do this are small.
    - Play gets repetitive.
    - Awfully noisy, especially solo. Lots of character shouts, multiple weapons going on, monsters screaming. After a while, it sounds like you've put your head in a trash compactor and it won't stop.

All in all, I'd quantify it as a good, but not great game. Not yet at any rate. My biggest beef is with the monster POV. Hard to tell when to jump, when to climb because it is difficult to judge distances, and more often than not, I'd find my monster facing a wall when I tried to use one of the special attacks.

The co-op portion is frustrating. I won't play co-op games unless I'm with people I know because what you get off the servers is 99 times out of 100, some 12 year old foul-mouthed kid who thinks they know everything. So this being a new (and expensive) game, means that co-op opportunities for me are going to be little to none until my friends slowly pick up the game as the price drops. BUT...if you can get a group together, it's a very entertaining co-op.

So solo - I give the game a 6, co-op with friends I give it an 8, average it out for a 7 score. Might update it later with more game play, but that's where I have it with a little over eight hours play involved.

Enjoyable niche pvp game -- at release there are three monsters available and a total of 12 hunters (4 original of each role, with the ability to unlock two more of each role). Hunt (deathmatch), Rescue (Hunters recuse and escort human survivors to extraction points, monster attempt to kill survivors or hunters), and Nest (Hunters attempt to destroy monster eggs around the map, monster attempts to kill them or defend till time runs out) are the three available game modes with Evacuation serving as a version of game mode that mixes the three in a "week" of fighting and then introduces Defend as the final encounter (which is basically reversed Nest with some added bells and whistles).

Now, to the million dollar question.. is it worth the price? And the answer if we look at the content released by pretty much any other game, would be a shoulder shrug and a not really. Does this make the game less fun? No, it doesn't... but their money making model is going to hurt them in the long game by ostracizing players who both see the glaring flaws in their content-starved release as well as have become insanely entitled by many F2P titles (Even in this genre one could look at Nosgoth as a F2P competitor)

As far as how the game handles itself within the pvp space -- I'd say it does a good job. You have pretty solid balance with a few minor and non-game breaking exceptions and the game doesn't spoon feed you on what to do or how to do it, which does lead to the inevitable "X IS OP!!1111" cries on the forums. You also have a pretty wild skill cap difference from the players who have been with the game since mid-alpha, as well as some early indications of working hacks (neither of which is anything new, or specific to Evolve). The limited number of game modes and maps does yield some serious repetition early on, which will drive away heavy players earlier than many games do.. so hopefully Turtle Rock will stay on it's content release, and not try and charge players every time they push out a new tidbit of code.

For what it does, I'd give Evolve an 7 of 10 with the caveat that the game should be doing considerably more given it's pricetag. A single player campaign would've gone a long way with the playerbase, as well as given Turtle Rock a chance to throw a little more backstory on the hunters and monsters into the mix... and only four game types is a little odd, especially considering that once of them is purely just deathmatch and the others really aren't anything truly new within the space.

I'm having fun with the game, but I can certainly see how gamers on limited budgets would pass this one over.

Here's the problem for me: none of my friends will buy the game because of 2K Game's pricing policies & DLC strategy, meaning I'm stuck playing public games or alone against bots - not how it was intended. 2K Games has single-handedly ensured the failure of what would have otherwise been an epic and critically acclaimed release because they wanted to nickle and dime gamers as much as possible. It's disappointing to say the least. Expand

Coop gaming lives or dies with the team. They can be great fun to play provided you have a decent team, but if your team does not cooperate, or is poorly-matched, well, it soon goes down the pan. In this respect ES2 suffers more than most. If you’re lucky enough to get a cooperative, well-matched team of hunters, against a well-matched monster, it can be really enjoyable. If you don’t have such a team it can be extremely frustrating, especially if poorly-matched hunters are pitted against a high-level monster. Due to the low number of players (it averages around 400 at the time of writing) there is no matchmaking to speak of and teams are often badly balanced as a result. There are also too few players who enjoy playing as monster which can lead to long waiting times. And yet despite all of these gripes I keep going back to the game because I love coop, and when it does go well it really is a satisfying game. I think Turtle Rock missed an opportunity with Evolve: there is the basis for a really good game here but, for whatever reasons, they dropped the ball. And I can understand why many people lost patience or grew bored with the game. But if you enjoy coop, and have a little patience, EVOLVE STAGE 2 is worth a try – it is free after all.

When it comes to problems with the game, I've been seeing a few bugs with the cursor here and there and I do get some weird quick fps drops at time.

When it comes to the DLC I have no problem with companies selling dlcs that bring in new characters and skins to the game similar to Borderlands. As long as you don't have to pay for Map packs or powerful abilities it won't be a problem.

The game is very enjoyable. The game has some fun maps and a good range of different characters to play as. Most of the negative reviews on here are people complaining about the microtransaction for skins, and DLC that will release more hunters and monsters in the future. Doesn't make the game any less fun to play.

Tracking down the beasts as the skillful hunters or patiently evolving to counter-attack as the hunted is equally exciting in Evolve. The first few hours at least.

    - Fun to play especially alone as the monster against other players.

    Cons:
    - Lack of content (limited to DLC) for example skin packs, season pass, with an exclusive content for a early buyer.
    - No meaningful story around main events (just randomly generated evacuation "story" and very lame ending) characters dialogue gets repetitive over time.
    - Character leveling does not satisfy enough, and only goal is just to reach the elite level, which unlocks elite skins for the characters (other skins only available with real money)

Evolve is a enjoyable game, but it gives the constant feeling that it could've been better without the microtransaction (I can't blame on turtle rock studios, 2K had control on them and decided how content was splitted) Evolve had potential to be the next ground breaking competitive FPS shooter.
The game broke apart when it got too repetitive and doesn't had any interesting story around the maps, characters or even monsters. e.g. From where monsters came from, characters talked about "secret agencies", abandoned planets that got dark and nobody didn't came back alive to tell what happened.
Evolve is a great fun for awhile, and I hoped I could understand more about the story and the world, but huge gaps around maps, characters etc.) ruins the experience a bit while you play.
You can only speculate what happened and create lores around maps and hunters.

This is my 2nd review, DO NOT take this too seriously. :)

I have a lot of fun when in a group, but the game requires a large amount of communication, and without having a full/near full team it is hard to be successful, and the game becomes a lot less fun. The monsters are also not the best balanced - the goliath is very hard to do well with, whereas the Wraith is incredibly overt powered if it gets to stage 2.

Overall a decent game, but needs a bit more tweaking, and best with friends.

The game isn't glitchy, or flawed in terms of mechanics, but it's incredibly, incredibly lacking of content. It is definitely not worth the $70 price tag unless you know exactly what you're getting. It's filled with day one dlc that should have been in the full game, but for some reason wasn't added in. Other than that, this game is great, and if it goes on sale, it's worth picking up.

For those of you who are still wondering what exactly this game is, its a 4 vs 1 shooter that is mostly aimed for people who like playing video games with friends. There are 4 players on a single team, each with a different class, going against another player on his own team. The catch is, that one player is a giant monster and will require teamwork to defeat. If you still don't get it, watch some gameplay or the trailer.

So, to conclude, get this game if it gets cheaper and you like playing games with friends. Or if you liked Left 4 Dead.

I picked up the game at Gamestop (a store that try's to UP sales the moment you walk in the doors) and left with JUST Evolve in my hands (no code on my receipt). Normally as you know you walk out with DLC codes, $29.99 for season pass, and paid to renew your Powere Up card.

evolVe game play: The moment gaming is not FUN... it will find a new pass time. I have been a gamer since PONG, and the memories I have about gaming is not how awesome the game looks, but how much FUN I had. Having a group of 3 friends... we hunted the monster, and we had FUN. It took me back to the HALO days... and how much FUN we had.

The DLc: I understand how gamer's are upset with feeling like they are being squeezed for more money. With all the DAY ONE: DLC it does feel like it could of/should of been a FREE-TO-PLAY game. BUT... you honestly do NOT need to buy ANY of the DLC at all to enjoy this game.

You wanna know my BIGGEST gripe was not the $60 plus DLC... BUT that it took SO long to download on my XboxOne. The DL time on the XboxOne is horrible. I wish that could be fixed... (has nothing to with THIS game)

My score is a 7 on my FUN factor. This will be a game my friends and I will have epic nights of HIDE n SEEK in a world that monsters lurk. The visuals are nice to look at. The sound is awesome when you hear the thumping of the monster near to you it makes you heart beat just as loud. Controls take a little while to get use to, but once its programmed in your mind... they are very good.

If you are on the fence about getting this game... go to a REDBOX and you will know after a few hours.

    Happy Hunting.. or Hunted

Having played Evolve on PS4 for a few days, my initial impression is that it's a pretty good game. There are some really impressive things going on here. When in combat or active pursuit of a monster, the mood is tense and the action is thoroughly enjoyable. However, the game does drag a bit when when you haven't spotted the monster for a while your team is just chasing after startled birds. Playing as the monster is also quite a lot of fun and is a thrill when you win. As hunters, communication with your teammates is crucial, so having mics is a huge advantage.

Wait times getting into a game seem a bit long at times, but I assume this will improve as more people (hopefully) buy the game and populate the servers.

I also like that they have an offline solo mode that allows you to practice with bots while also leveling up skills.

Overall, great concept for a game and I hope that it'll pick up in popularity. It can be repetitive but this should not be mistaken for shallow gameplay. Getting the basics of movement and skills/abilities down and learning the maps is just the first step. I'll tentatively give Evolve a '7' but this could end up being a solid 8 or even a 9 once some of the kinks are worked out.

This game has an amazing idea.

The idea is that four friends can come together to hunt giant monsters and have fun. And while in theory it's awesome, the reality is that this game isn't very fun all around. Encounters with the monsters loose their value after certain repetition. In the end, after a couple days this game seems old.

I do not recommend buying this game. A rent, at best.

As for all the hoo-ha about the DLC, I don't think there is a problem. Maps will always be free (they say) and new hunters/monsters add enough to the game to justify asking for money. I know most people disagree, but that is my opinion.

As for the other modes (Rescue, Hatch, Defend) they seem more balanced, and specific hunters are more suited to certain modes (Lazarus and resurrect colonists in rescue, and Bucket can kill eggs very quickly by himself in Hatch.) I will confess I haven't played these modes much in my 200 hours, and wish there was a function where I could que for them directly, rather than having to que up for a whole evacuation game and hope I get one.

The game has great polish, but it can't overshadow the shortcomings that exist since the first open beta. Things like friends can't connect via online lobby and start a game (but very well can if one opens a game, starts it and then the other hot joins with some luck) those have been adressed by the community but never where adressed by the developer. Which even further feeds the feeling that the Betas where in fact marketing events instead of bug-hunting parties.

In the end, evolve isn't bad. Just very medicore and on a price tag that's too muchin my opinion.

Yes. This game is pretty overpriced, dlc's are cancer almost in every game nowadays and evolve have f*cking store like the game and dlc's didn't cost enough. But the game itself is pretty good, at least with friends while hanging out in mumble/ts3/etc. Solid 8 for me when playing with friends, 7 if playing with bots/random guys who've never played with mouse and keyboard before (at least it feels like that). But these dick moves, day one dlc and 50 euros for example, makes me to lower score to 6. It just feels greedy.

So guys, please, try to contain your tantrums and rage a little bit while writing a review. This game doesn't deserve 0. While in my opinion it doesn't deserve ten either, it's still better than your butthurt-zeros. Grow up, really.

I think it would be practical to have the assault class the slowest, and the medic the most agile etc but there not. You can however pre-match select perks like say 200% jump height or a damage/defence buff which does add a compelling element and keeps things spicy. And there is a online campaign (reminiscent of titanfall) which lasts for a few hours. The game does boast a innovative feature in which the online campaign called "evacuation" when the hunters/monster wins a match they upon starting the next match gets a in-game buff to help them out in the form of a turret, toxic cloud etc. I also have noticed no immersive on-screen elements like screen bob when you fall, recoil through pro-longed firing etc. Plus there are 4 characters behind a day one paywall, but there is also free future map packs. Graphics are extremely poor for 2015, with teture pop in, clipping etc. Overall a fun game, but little to compel you to play it for long :) Expand

A decent FPS, but definitely not great. A multiplayer, monster shooter is a very generic concept, but it is implemented quite well in this game. Although the gameplay does get stale after a while, the game is good enough to be played for a while. However, the price for a generic shooter like this is absurd. Ultimately, Evolve is an over-hyped game that did not meet expectations. The gameA decent FPS, but definitely not great. Ultimately, Evolve is an over-hyped game that did not meet expectations. The game relies on its multiplayer aspect to captivate players, which consists of the same game modes that are re-skinned with minor changes. Overall, Evolve is not a horrible game, but I wouldn't recommend picking it up unless you have money to burn. Expand

Evolve is like a free OLG, but the problem is it cost too much,59.99 to do the same thing over and over again,
the concept is good, but really not fun enough.By the way,the graphics are good though, cryengine always look gorgeous. The monsters are too strong, you just need to run and eat until lv3 and kill all the hunters.i think 2k need to nerf the monsters or buff the hunters. i think

Game was alright on launch with a lot of potential but fell apart amongst dumb dlc practices and poor management.

Evolve is a great game, but 2k games screwed it up by giving you an unfinished game with first day DLC. The game could use a little bit of tweaking here and there, but here is a tip: don't buy it full price. Wait till it goes on sale. I'd say Evolve and all of it's DLC is worth 60 dollars, so just wait like the hunters when they try to track the monster

1st of all, the 80€ DLC everyone is talking about, is a 19.99€ Season pass, the rest are ALL SKINS, they won't change your gameplay!!! So don't jump on the hate train because of the DLC. 2nd: The game is 50€, which is overpriced for what it has to offer, yes it has different modes like hunter, nest and rescue, but they are similar since the game is just a 4 players coop game. Now I feel this game will grow with time, after all the negative reviews and the bashing I hope turtle rock make some changes in the game and maybe add more stuff in the future (maybe steam workshop who knows). Now I can't deny I love coop games, and this one is no exception, the game is really fun, the atmosphere is brutal, visually stunning and the 'cat and mouse' thing is really intense.

    Pros
    - Atmosphere is amazing, makes the hunting really intense.
    - Coop done right, every class is important..
    - Sound effects are really good.
    - Most likely to grow in the future (mods, maps, hunters,...)

    Cons
    - Lack of content, covers it with character development.
    - Overpriced

NOTE: They need to add more content to the game, new modes and maps and NOT as overpriced DLC, if not, this game will kill 2K and turtle rock.

NOTE 2: I think people are overreacting a bit about the games price.

I'll give it a 7/10, maybe in the future, with new stuff it'll be an easy 8 or even 9.

Evolve is unquestionably one of the best multiplayer games to arrive in the last few years.

When Evolve plays nice and doesn’t annoy you with technical problems, it is kind of fun, provided you play not more than one campaign a day. But, really, you can get the same fun in any decent f2p shooter. Like Team Fortress 2, for example.

Imbalanced and repetitive to a disappointing degree, but when it hits the mark it can be great. [April 2015, p.56]
