  1. All the multimedia does is add to an already immersive and intense experience.
  2. This could very well be a prototype for the next generation of city building games to come.

As a simple enough idea, the unwieldy concept of a medieval trading/intrigue/court politics title has grabbed us by the short and curlies and refuses to let go for the near future. In a nice way, if that's possible.
  4. Has something to offer fans of almost any genre--it's the sort of creative hybrid that computer gaming sorely needs.

It's the kind of game that either enthralls you for days on end or drives you up the wall to gnaw at the curtain rods. Or both. Yes, definitely both, in my case.

The gamplay, however, is devilishly clever in its use of politics, economics, and social standing to keep your butt planted, and your attention riveted. [Feb 2003, p.107]
  7. The gameplay is complex, nonlinear and addictive.
  8. Immersive, looks good and is an incredible challenge.

The control scheme is bound to scare lots of people away before they see what it has to offer. And it has a lot to offer. It's not pretty, but it's deep.

There are at least three or four games lurking in Europa 1400: The Guild, each of them enjoyable and addictive. [May 2003, p.93]
  11. A lot more difficult to learn and to play than it ought to be... [but] a great game.
  12. Both fascinating and addictive to play, and yet has so many rough edges that you might not want to play it at all.

It will take at least a full game or two (or three) before you have any idea what you are doing, but even before you learn the ropes, Europa 1400: The Guild is strangely addictive. [Apr 2003, p.85]
  14. A wonderfully complex simulation that entertains more than it frustrates, though this title is clearly not for everyone. Action-oriented RTS fans should avoid it like the plague.

There are a lot of funny possibilities like being a priest, thief, graveyard warden, but also taking a classic profession. In addition you try to get a job in the authorities for example through bribes. The music fits, the controlling and graphics are good.
But after 10 or 15 hours the game gets repetitive and you saw most of the game already.
