This was a really fun game when it came out. I played the free online demo, and it was good enough that I paid full price for Quake Wars. I'm a guy who never pays full price for anything, so that says a lot about how much I liked Quake Wars.

The thing that really kills Quake Wars is the terrible animation. Even though your game could be running at 60fps with vsync, it always looks laggy

The thing that really kills Quake Wars is the terrible animation. Even though your game could be running at 60fps with vsync, it always looks laggy because the animations themselves are only 30fps. It seems like a minor detail, but it's really important. It just looks terrible.
The other problem is the lack of mods and lack of community development. I'm not sure if anyone made custom maps for Quake Wars, so we would play the same hand full of maps over and over again. It gets old rather quick.

ETQW got really great maps, no un-lockable pay to win crap and some of the best teamwork action i ever played. Another great thing is that both humans and Strogs are quite different and still pretty balanced. Every class is good and fun to play esp. engineer is nice. The only downside is a bit small number of maps.

Ok so its 5 years later and Quake Wars is still, in my opinion, one of the most original, solid team based shooters on the PC. I wanted to like this game. I'm a long-time id/Quake fan, going back to even before Wolf3d, but I could not get into this game. I tried. It just isn't fun to me in many ways. The sound are awful. They sound like an early 90's freeware game and come across as very childish. Also I don't like how the game 'feels' while playing. It's very uncomfortable and I wanted to like this game. I don't like the focused objectives in multiplayer gameplay. It all feels very canned an controlled and not spontaneous. I bought it for full price when it came out and excitedly installed it and was very quickly disappointed. I think the Battlefield games are much better in many ways like sound, graphics, controls feel, performance, more sandbox-like, etc etc. There are a bunch of retail copies of this game at a local retailer for $5 and they've been sitting there for over six months at that price and not selling. Don't pay more than $10 for it. It just isn't worth it. Get Battlefield 2 and install Project Reality if you want hardcore objectives-based FPS online game. Alternatively, go with BF: Bad Company 2 for a more accessible arcade FPS online game. Expand

Very fun. I think it gives Battlefield 2 a run for it's money. You may have to switch classes a lot, but otherwise very fun. Requires a decent PC.

PURE AWESOME! Steep learning curve, but so WORTH learning. Might take you like 20 hours to figure out classes, maps, objectives, stick with it and you will see what a TEAM based game is supposed to be. First time you blow an objective with 30 sec left, you will understand.

This game is really fun! I remember playing this at a LAN before on the demo, great fun. I played the demo alot to. The graphics are ok for 2007, but they could had done better. The missions are fun so you don't need to do the same thing over and over. Online: It is fun, the players aren't impossible to kill like in CS 1.6 - there are some Quake 3 sounds in there to.

This game isn't plug and play like Team Fortress 2 and whatever the cool kids like these days. It's best to play on a small server first to learn the basic classes and have small matches. After the player builds skill in certain classes they can enjoy a good big game. As said earlier, this is not Team Fortress 2 where you'd have to capture the flag (or, rather, intelligence cases) or control points. It's more of a mixture of both, where certain classes need protection while they complete a certain objective, and therefore, major teamwork is required. The gameplay is both tactical and fastpaced, delivering almost Quake-like player physics at times. Each class has different weapons from which they can choose. There is a somewhat limited election but all the weapons are nicely constructed. The graphics are good. They're not something major beauty but the landscapes are fantastic, the models are pretty detailed, and the animations are good. The problem sort of is that the animations don't have many transitions into one another and there aren't any ragdoll physics. The weather effects are beautiful but the major weapon effects like orbital beam strikes aren't up to par with what was established by 2007. The controls are responsive and some micromanagement for certain actions is required but is unavoidable in a game of this caliber. However, you may find yourself fighting Quake veterans such as myself which can be hard, so taking a tutorial the first time or fighting against bots (which are well-programmed and pretty smart) for a few rounds is recommended. As for sound, the music is fantastic but unfortunately only populates the main menus and loading screens. The voice acting is sort of roaring but not too annoying. The weapon sounds are good and there are pretty neat nature sounds. All in all, if you follow the ideals of id Software multiplayer, you'll have a shot at having fun. Expand

If you are a major Quake fan like I am, then this game is just perfect for you! With all the hidden features you keep finding during you experience in playing, the experience it self is also amazing. Extreme visuals, endless hours of game play, and a competitive ranking system. I just love it!

This game's learning curve is a little steap and the tutorial doesn't help much in this regard either. This is a word of advice, get the game, study it in single player before going online or you'll think you made a mistake buying this. In the end it sums up to this: If you are like and thought Battlefield flag capturing system was crap and ruined the game, get this. It draws people into areas and makes combat as beautifull and rewarding as it can get. Every class has it's role and every class is very fun to play. I'm giving it only an 8 because after the 1.5 patch, developers will not support the game anymore, furthermore, even if the tools are there, modding and creating maps for this game requires really talented people. Excellent multiplayer FPS shooter. Much more in depth than CS:S and CoD4 and much more action packed than the Battlefield games. Definitely a game that requires more skill than most FPS which might put some people off who want to be at the top 5 minutes after playing it.

Graphics are great. You don't need a super computer to get decent framerates with high detail. The maps are really well laid out and offer a variety of terrain and senery. Goals based play is fun and gives more depth than the standard, deathmatch, team deathmatch, and CTF. My only complaint is that you lose your unlockables after the "campain" is over so you end up starting all over Graphics are great. My only complaint is that you lose your unlockables after the "campain" is over so you end up starting all over again with the unlocables in the next series of matches. Huge negative imo. Sone people have compared this to BF 2142, but think it's better than BF because getting the unlocks in BF takes forever to get unless you are a stat padding noob and set up matches strickly to headsot one another to get the unlockables in a decent time frame (many gamers can't devot 6 hours a day to gaming to gain that tatical edge). I'd give this game a ten if you could keep your unlockables. Expand

best online shooter i've played in years. the classes and maps were carefully designed with balance in mind. as to N.K.'s comment, game has plenty of people online, hit the word players twice after you get a server list. it puts the populated servers at the top of the list. realize people use this site seriously so don't post trash reviews.

Fun and frustrating all at once. Flight controls need work. Humans can't take a hit for anything and their weapons suck. Good objective stacking. Even moderate difficulty computer AI never misses, but yet never deviates from their plan of attack. Fun when playing PVP because of the human element.

  1. A brilliant and immersive game...On the one hand you've got the sheer technical prowess and experience of id, and on the other you've got Splash Damage's intrinsic understanding of what makes a good online shooter. Together, you've got a game that could set a new benchmark for the genre. [Nov 2007, p.62]
  2. ETQW delivers plenty of fast-paced action, and nothing beats the feeling of finally breaking through firmly entrenched defenses. It's not the absolute best multiplayer game, but it's definitely worth playing.
