En Garde! flares brightly with its slick, slapstick combat, for a while at least.

En Garde’s intense sword fights and infectious atmosphere make it a fun, if fleeting, indie action game.

If it doesn't always satisfy the more animal parts of our brain, En Garde! keeps the higher functions entertained, and provides some solid laughs. [Issue#389, p.114]

As is, En Garde! doesn’t overstay its welcome, and its strong combat will carry players through its rather short playtime. While the rest of the game isn’t as compelling, and the characters and story, while fine, feel like a missed opportunity, I still enjoyed my time with it. A more fleshed-out sequel, however, could be something truly special.

I applaud the insistent focus on combat, but En Garde! deserves more; a plot, environments waiting to be explored, real progression. None of that is here, so while the game's core is well-designed and robust, it's a bit too slim an experience to get a wholehearted recommendation from me.

En Garde! has plenty of style and looks and controls well enough, but the extremely tedious gameplay focusing more on tricks than swordplay quickly starts to wear thin.

The game wouldn't bad if it weren't for that awful off-center camera. Character needs to be in the center of the screen.

Battles work when you have to exercise your creativity, once it gets to fighting multiple enemies that regenerate their shield bar and you have absolutely nothing in the background to use against them, it gets really annoying. The lock system doesn't work very well, if you use the automatic mode there's no way to deactivate it, but if you use the manual, touching to the sides does not change the enemy you are locked. It's bad.
Also, when I started getting to fight against the same bosses I just fought, it was a deal breaker. I'd prefer no boss at those parts at all, even if it made the game shorter.
Dear devs, do not reuse bosses. "Better than nothing" is not real, nothing is better.

Why can't I swing from building to building. I also think this game is very impressive for a student game. Would've been higher but my driver crashed. It's very good though. Full Review »
