The 1:1 scale of the galaxay is just mind blowing. Hunting for black holes, earthlike planets or well known nebulae is all possible in game. The recent Kepler discovred exoplantes are now in the game too.
Combat and dogfighting is sim like and really complex. The options and trade offs for pilots are multiple and there is a feel of real depth in your ship.

Combat, Exploration, Mining & Trading are the main pillars of game play and are immediately accessible and have virtually no barrier for entry (unlike other online games where you've got to amass a small fortune of currency or spend hours leveling up before you can access certain content)

The learning curve can seem steep at first, and the game doesn't get easier as you go (you just get better at it)
It's an extremely gratifying experience flying into a star port and docking your ship with ease, while watching beginner pilots spend 15 minutes trying to just point their ship in the direction.
Don't listen to people who complain that docking is too hard, it's about as complex as parking a car (practice makes perfect, once you develop your spacial awareness and get a feel for your ship, you'll be boosting into port without trouble.)
and definitely don't waste your money on a docking computer, just learn to fly your ship properly. (would you ask someone else to park your car at the mall?)

Combat is intense and rewarding, with millions of different weapon configurations for the available ships even the beginner ship has a chance against some of the bigger "end game" ships, so it pays to not get complacent when you start getting bigger ships because at the end of the day, the better pilot will ALWAYS win.

Exploration is a lot of fun as a primary profession or as a way to supplement fuel costs on long trips.

Despite criticism, Mining is actually reasonably lucrative for a patient player, as there are no real overheads (just get a cheap mining laser and go!) but it does take a lot of patience to chip away enough asteroids to make some real money. It's an interesting diversion however and I'm interested to see how it develops.

Trading is probably the easiest way to both make and lose a lot of money in Elite, and once you start to get serious in trading you'll find that your cargo can be often worth more than your ship! which can make for some very TENSE situations, even docking a Lakon Type 9 can become a big deal at a crowded station as all it takes is one cowboy to clip you on his way out of star-port to ruin your day/week/month.

At this point in time Elite is an incredible, vast, living, breathing universe waiting to be explored and conquered and I'm truly excited to see where it goes next.

If you're at all interested in space sims you NEED to give it a try.

So far that i've put in a few hours, I have to say this game is a heck of a lot of fun. There's a lot you need to learn about getting about but it's worth it. Wish you could land on planets though like in Frontier, but apparently that's coming in the first update.

Whilst none are at war, there are constant skirmishes and internal struggles going on, and no one knows what will end up happening because the outcome is decided by us.

This game is quite literally what you make of it. It will not hold your hand, the mechanics take a bit of thought, it is not made for a modern day gamer. It is based on the original elite, so if you never played that be prepared for some things that will strike you as odd to begin with.

You can do what ever you want in this game, but be warned, there will be consequences. One of the factions might start hating you, effectively cutting off that section of space to you. Players might notice you have a high bounty on your head and coming for you, alternatively you can try to find such players.

It's the fact that this game is so open ended that it is going to cause some critic amongst players who are used to having everything pointed out to them. It is also in a constant state of flux, events in systems come and go, trade routes come and go.

When I look at most modern day releases I look at the features they have and realise, elite has just the same amount as those, but with a lot more going under the hood that is hidden. People will claim the features in this game are basic. Some of the newest features are, but all of them are solid. Yes there are a few bugs here and there, but they have been patched out on an almost daily bases. We are not talking problems like Unity or AW here, or even the static content of destiny . Expect the current features to be improved and iterated upon now that the foundations are set.

Current feature set as of writing:
    Ship to ship combat
    Trading
    Mining
    Exploration
Dynamic galaxy based on player influence
    Owning multiple ships
upgrading ships to suit your purpose
Solo mode (no player interaction with other players)
Open play (full on pvp possible)

    expected features to come:
Iteration on all of the above.
Flight Wings - grouping up with friends for specific group missions and such.
Thargoids - an alien race that little is known about, other than the fact they live in witchspace(hyperspace).
    Seamless Plantery Landings.
First Person - walking around your ship, stations, planets.
    Executive control of capital ships.
Big Game Hunting (so we have something extra to do on those planets).

The game is in a good spot right now, if you have some patience to learn the mechanics, and find the open ended aspect intriguing this is a game for you. If you don't, or you want your hand held, just avoid it, it is no arcade shooter.

It's the kind of game that does not set goals for you, but leaves you to set your own. Do you want to be a pirate, smuggler, bounty hunter, trader, explorer? It's all doable.

Progression at the start can be slow, especially if you want to solely trade. It is probably best to practise combat and earn money from bounty hunting (at resource extraction sites) to begin with, upgrade to a Viper, then maybe invest in a cobra for a mix of bounty hunting and trading.

The game is very addictive and a lot of fun, but it seems that it isn't for everyone. There appear to be a lot of people hating on the game because it requires an internet connection. My guess is that these people are video game pirates, as most of the gaming world is online now anyway, and the game can be played without issue with a laptop tethered to a phone, for example.
Then there are the Star Citizen haters...Not sure why they have to hate on Elite or vice versa. It is possible to like more than one game in the same genre, but they haven't figured that out yet.

Game is very polished, immersive and great 'as is', and it will only get more epic as time goes on. Definitely worth your time and money.

The economy is not wholly player-driven, but it is definitely influenced strongly by player actions.

Multi-player support is somewhat rudimentary at present, but that is set to change very soon. You can already team up with other like-minded agitators by taking on individual jobs to help destabilise governments, trigger wars, and change the fate of entire planets, which is quite cool.

Most of the time in this galaxy, however, you are the flea on the dog's back, hopping about, and hoping not to get scratched. If your inner Han Solo/Mal Reynolds longs to set out in the cold, uncaring void and "blaze your own trail" (as the blurb goes) - then this game is probably for you.

Given the average level of intelligence on display in some of the negative user reviews thus far, and the agenda that seems to pop up with tedious regularity (i.e. "no offline mode means I can't get a free copy so I'll rage against it's continued existence"), those who read these reviews can probably make their own minds up about who is the target audience and who isn't.

Some (well, most gamers now) will not like it, because it's a vast galaxy and there is no hand-holding what so ever. It chucks you in and you have to figure stuff out yourself and progress however you like. It's also quite difficult to start off.

In the end though. Frontier is pushing the boundaries and is trying something new and for that they have to be respected. It's FAR from the generic crop of FPS and RPG games we see so many of these days.

This game isn't about being the biggest or richest or baddest its about simply being and playing a role in an ever changing galaxy.

After setting up, which takes a while as explained below you can drop in and out whenever you want. Once you find your friends you can play with them. But this game is for adults with patience. so be warned.

I started playing this game last week after dusting off my old gaming pc after moving house.

Make no mistake this game is difficult to get your head around at first but nowehere near as difficult as games in the X series which I simply gave up on after a few hours of play. I tried using the xbox controller to begin and although manageable I realised that buying a flight stick was the way forward. I bought the T flight HOTAS for around £30 and also bought a headset and voice attack and this changed my experience completely. So the settup cost for this is around £80.

The game takes a while to learn. I spent several hours setting up my controls, learning how to fly, setting up voice attack.

Then I needed to learn about how the galaxy worked, how trade worked, how to fight, how to escape people attacking me and then did a mission or two. I died twice and didn't make any money.

Then, suddenly, everything just started coming together for me. I began to actually feel like the ship was my own and this was a huge galaxy to explore.

I now have a sidewinder with a few add ons and about 20k in the bank, thats nothing. I am in system I don't remember the name of and have no idea where I am going to go next. I love it and the great thing is the experience will only get better.

    1. The internet seems to have a vendetta against this game due to its current only online status, which is said to be changed in the future. These people tend to rate it very badly and for superficial reasons. The 0/10 and 1/10 reviews are most definitely angered offline players. What I recommend you do is look up gameplay on YouTube and see if you like it, if you do buy it, if you dislike it don't buy it.

ED really gets your imagination flowing and the sense of adventure happening. Right now I'm half time Trader and half time Bounty Hunter. I'm currently Allied and Friendly in several Star Systems and I'm having the time of my life!

ED is the best PC Gaming experience I have ever had in a long time!

This game is a defining moment in game design, it's nostalgic and new at the same time. It's the game of 1984, and it's the most superb VR simulation to date! Plenty to do, and players are really only limited by their own ability to decide what to do next with their ship. Congratulations Frontier Developments! This game is awesome!

Elite : Dangerous is going to be a love/hate game - I can see why some people are very disillusioned with the game as it is very much a bare bones framework for now and many players want more than that from a game; hopefully that will come. It is also a punishing game – if you make a mistake it can really cost you – wiping out hours or days of game play (never fly that which you can’t afford to lose and make sure you are insured) , currently some of the punishments are over-the-top (fines and rep hits) again hopefully these will be sorted out.

I can see that E:D as it stands is a very solid framework for what could grow into an amazing and immersive game.

The galaxy is vast and currently mostly empty but there’s still plenty to do and explore and I can only see this experience getting better.

I've been waiting since 1984 to play Elite again. This is a game that will not appeal to everyone. If you need to win... be told what to do, where to go..... if you get bored easily, then spend your money elsewhere. Absolutely no spoon-feeding here. Many many ways to crash and burn. You do however have the entire galaxy in 1:1 scale to go and discover yourself in.

For example, to begin my bounty-hunting, it was common to accidentally hit a security ship in the heat of the chase and become wanted with a fine of about 400 credits... the most recent patch has fixed this, so now I can stay out pew-pewing wanted scum until I need to return to base for repairs and/or reloads.
Those tht are giving this 0, I don't believe have given it enough chance, or more likely, have jumped in and not bothered going looking anywhere online for where other people are talking about it, and so missing out on half the fun... there are 400 billion stars, and hardly near as many players, so it can be hard to find other 'real' people...

Gameplay-wise, the flight mechanics are excellent. Making space combat fun is very challenging in space games since it's empty, but FD managed to nail it. They achieved a good balance between realism and fun.

The other gameplay mechanics are extremely fun and have good depth. Some aspects are still barebones, but the potential is there and with time they will certainly mature to the level of the flight mechanics, outfitting, and combat.

No static AI scripted story, events will be driven by real peoples actions which adds to an already rich and satisfying sense of immersion.

With the planned future expansions and continued development there is certainly a lot to come that will keep the game fresh and you coming back for more.

The latest fixes during Beta and Gamma have done an excellent job to improve the stability and overall balance of the game. Trading is finally fixed and logical again, combat feels great. No issues with the netcode (for me) and overall an excellent experience. Mind though - this game isn't easy and doesn't hold your hand - your actions have consequences and there is no magic immunity nets. Live fast, die hard!

In addition, Frontier Developments have shown to be a great company, constantly hearing and answering their customers and changing the game to suit people's requests. Many times features or fixes requested in the forums have "magically" appeared in the game showing that the guys at Frontier actually do really care about our opinions - this also corroborated by some of the senior Frontier staff frequently posting and engaging in debates and clarifications with the players.

Scoring this game seems to be mostly binary. I'm giving ten. Beware thouse giving 0. There are many people heavily invested in this game failing, trying to prevent sales needed to let the game evolve.

The game has been in a very polished state (excellent 4K and Oculus Rift support) and amazing sounds. Eventhough it has kept me busy since day 1 the game was missing some key features being launched in Beta in the coming weeks. I am also looking forward to the first person and planetary landings expansions.

The way the galaxy has been replicated with procedural generation to a comma with known data is astonishing. Travelling through it is a dream come true. Being able to chase and combat wanted PC or NPC to Barnard star or to Bootes has no price.

Elite Dangerous is a fantastic game. It's perhaps one of the most immersive space game I've ever played, and I've pretty much played them all, being an avid space sci-fi gamer.

What's fantastic about it is my playtime... 700 hours already, and I have not even gotten started!

Its getting a 10 from me despite not being the complete package just yet because even now its probably the best game I've bought / played for several years.

Read the negative reviews as well though for balance, some will make good valid points. But if in doubt join the ED forum and ask questions. Also note that there was (and still is) bitterness over design changes that occurred during beta which have soured some folk, others simply want this to fail.

If you know anything about elite then you already know this game is going to be amazing, the original came out 30 years ago and was ground breaking, and this game is too.

Really good game, really nice graphics, modelled off the original and based off the milky way galaxy, If your a space sim fan then this game is for you.

Highly recommendable for all space sim fans out there:
Pros: Complex controls, in depth ship customization options, ability to pursue your advancements your own way, massive galaxy to explore, death actually holds consequences.
Cons: A few major glitches/game issues at present, training missions don't cover some very important content.

But if you have ever dreamt about going into space, exploring amongst the stars and trading rare commodities in your own space-ship, this is definitely the game for you. If you like space games, flight sims and sandbox games, this game won't disappoint.

Keep in mind that development of this game didn't stop on release. A LOT of features will be added. One of them is improved coop functionality (group missions etc.) which I'm very much looking forward to.

Having played all through the Beta and Gamma Phase and now uo 1.1 i can safely say this is an awesome game, I've already put tons of hours in and i can't see that ending any time soon now its released. For a new player this can be difficult, there is no starter zones and flying takes lots of practice but once you've got the bull by the horns flying is exceptional fun.

So the initial release of a game I've played for over 120 hours during the Alpha and Beta stages (despite promising myself I'd not play too much to avoid burning out) is finally released. I say "initial release", because this is not the end, it's merely then end of the beginning, with Frontier planning on updating and adding new features for years to come.

What 1.0 of Elite: Dangerous gives you is exactly what was promised in the initial Kickstarter. A modern re-imagining of the original Elite game from 1984, but it's also so much more than that and the potential for the future is staggering.

Combat in the game is a wonderfully visceral, strategic affair which requires you to eke out the best performance from your ship's weapons and systems to overcome your foe. This is no simplistic point and shoot affair.

Graphically the game is stunning, and the pure, unadulterated beauty of space in Elite: Dangerous will frequently stop you in your tracks whilse playing. Seeing starlight slipping over the floor of the docking hanger as the station rotates will make your jaw drop. Sunrises seen from the viewpoint of an ice asteroid belt will bring a tear to your eye. And this is before you add in the extra dimension (guffaw) of the Oculus Rift.

On the Sound front the Frontier guys have really hit it out of the park. From the roar of the engine boost, the groans of a ships hull under stress when pulling high G manoeuvres, to the thump of impacts and the ambient noised in stations and outposts, the sound design in the game immerses you in the game like no other I've played. It would be criminal if they didn't win awards for the sound design in this game.

Being a true sandbox, deciding what you want to be in the galaxy is the first step in a long journey (a first step that some people seem to stumble on as they seem to prefer being told what to do in games). Bounty Hunter, Trader, Pirate, Miner, Hired Gun, Smuggler, Explorer, it's up to you. And whatever you choose, you can always switch roles whenever the mood takes you as you're not locked into an artifical skill tree or any nonsense like that.

The one potential downside to the game (for some people at least) is that it will not hold your hand. When you first start playing expect to fail a few times! Expect to crash when trying to dock for the first time! Expect to actually have to practice flying your ship before you can fight effectively! Expect to have to put some of that gray matter to use when learning how to trade effectively!

There is no instant win here, and the game is so much better for it.

In an age where seemingly every game has an enforced 2 hour tutorial before you can even start to play properly, and where every game has been dumbed down to lowest common denominator levels, this is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Elite: Dangerous to anybody who loves space, space games in general, and who has always secretly wanted to be Han Solo.

I can not even say enough good things about this game! There is so much content and things to do in an entire Galaxy. The developer continues to expand the universe with more content with each new release level. I started playing in Beta all the way through Gamma and full release. I have done more than a few videos on Youtube under the same user name and I always have fun playing.

I will say this though the game is not without faults. I have has some issues during the release version related to audio. Given how quickly the developer patches the game I would not be surprised if they are fixed rather quickly.

Ignore the haters. This is great fun. No game this big has a smooth launch, but this game has been well tested and the bugs are minimal.

If you played Elite, this is Elite. Okay, the learning curve is a little steeper - more controls etc., but stick with it, it pays back in terms of how fun and sophisticated it gets.

If you haven't played Elite, but have wanted to fly among the stars... this is for you too. Think GTA in space in terms of how open the open play is (not in terms of content - no excessive violence, misogyny or bad language here, my ten year old plays it).

If you need to be playing in five minute chunks, and don't want to invest time learning the game... it's not for you. That's fine, I'm not judging, just being honest with you.

The community won't let this game stagnate. For your money, and no ongoing monthly fees, it's bargain of the year.

Don't try to play on keyboard and mouse. At least invest in a gamepad, better yet, a decent joystick. It will increase your enjoyment immensely.

The machine requirements are surprisingly modest, this will play on a two or three year old machine very well. At the other end, if you want a game to show off your 4k rig, this is it. The models are all built for 8k right now. If you have Oculus rift, you should already be playing it.

If you really want to experience wow though, you have to try it in VR. E:D is by far the most mature VR game I've played so far (I have an Oculus Rift DK2) and the immersion and just straight up 'wow' you get from it is no other entertainment experience I've ever had. I've quite literally had tears in my eyes and feeling of awe on many occasions and even after several months I still relish 'going in' each time. If there was ever a case for the future of VR, E:D makes it conclusively IMO.

That being said, there are still some issues and limitations (player to player comms being the biggest IMO) but judging by the sheer dedication, enthusiasm and skill of the Frontier team, I have little doubt they will continue to push until it's the game we all know it can be.

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
