    Iron Rain is a good game on its own merits, but it's simply not as good as EDF5. It is a pretty different experience that's easy to recommend to series fans that are hungry for more, though.

    Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain is a fresh start for the series, with several improvements in terms of graphics and gameplay but the same focus on linear, repetitive missions you won't fight alone.

    It's pretty amazing that anyone could make a game like this and think it would be fun to play. The controls are some of the worst I've ever seen in a modern game. Sluggish, full of terrible feedback, confusing, and a chore to operate. The pacing is also terrible. The first missions are throw away easy, but soon you hit a brick wall of absurd difficulty where endless enemies spawn right on top of you, you can need to run and gun to survive, but you can't run and gun at the same time, you're constantly staggered, you're constantly stuck reloading, you're constantly being knocked off your feet.     We gave up less than halfway through and went back to 5.
