The difficulty is real here. Think, you're tough? Try this expansion. Pickens approves!

Weaker than its two predecessors , gameplay is the same and the story is disappointing !

A pretty solid RTS for 2002. As a sequel to the original Earth-2150 and to E-2150: The Moon Project - "Lost Souls" has a bit more units, a lot of unit parameter wierdness was finally balanced out (original E-2150 had some units OP and some outright useless, Lost Souls fixes that. For example, superweapons now cost a lot to both build and use - which makes sense.)

AI remains retarded, however. Which is compensated by having the AI get free units every few minutes - and power ones at that. This makes the game more challenging, but sort of like playing chess against a very stupid player, but one who can respawn a taken piece every 5 turns.
Your own units' AI is pretty hard-headed, too. Despite a ton of settings - your units have no self-preservation and will get killed very easily if you don't micromanage them very explicitly. For instance, long-range artillery, when ordered to attack a target - will sometimes go proceed to close quarters combat for no apparent reason.

The campaign is worse than the original E-2150. It dumbs down researching new tech as well as saving resources. You get A LOT more resources in E-2150, sometimes gaining 500'000 on one mission, whereas in the original game the ultimate goal was to gather 1'000'000 throughout the entire campaign. It has much less interesting objectives, most missions being just "make a base and kill them all". Sometimes with a timer ticking. And the enemy bases in Lost Souls are MASSIVE - and very tedious to grind down. Unlike the original game, again.

Overall it would be fun to play the original E-2150's campaign with the Lost Souls engine. I've read there's a mod which does just that - but I haven't gotten to installing it.

  1. The game is, admittedly, a bit slow compared to games like StarCraft, but it’s more complex than that, as well. Either way, Lost Souls is a game that tries new things, and even if they don’t always seem that great, at least it’s a breath of fresh air.

While Lost Souls does add to the storyline of the series, attempting to extend the premise of the Earth's last days, there's absolutely no innovation or new features to truly make this game stand out.
  3. Earth 2150 trilogy fans will be overwhelmed with this game. The rest of you would be better off with something else.
