Eagle Flight brings the unbridled joy of flying to VR. With its sense of speed, stern challenge, and unparalleled levels of control and comfort it’s only the fact that it plays so safely within its own sandbox that stops it getting a perfect score. [Tested with Oculus Rift]

Excellent flight controls make this an intuitive simulation, while elegant graphics and an engaging soundtrack pull you further in to the experience. [Issue#257, p.60]

All in all, Eagle Flight ticks all the right boxes when it comes to VR.

Like most other VR-games, Eagle Flight works best in small portions. Because gameplay-wise, there is not much to it. The courses might have enough variability, but the game-modes are severely lacking – especially in multiplayer. Though the beautiful landscape of Paris always entices me with either a casual flight or a high speed race through the subway-station. If flying in VR is something, you can get behind than you’ll find Eagle Fly to be a creative alternative to any action packed shooting gallery.

Simple, yet quite entertaining flying in VR through a deserted Paris that appeals to soloists with loads of challenges as well as leaderboards, while the online hunts deliver with fast paced pursuits.

The controls are tight, combat is simple, and Uplay still sucks, but this game isn't half bad. [Tested with Oculus Rift]

Eagle Flight is not so simple as it may look, with arcade mechanics to compete for rankings and some moments of true brilliance.

Although they could have gone with the rote, grinding route, Eagle Flight actually is more about the journey.

  1. Is it a must-have VR title? No. But there are precious few of those. It is a pretty decent VR title though, with a strong conceit and pleasant scenery. That makes it notable enough. To be honest, what it really needs is support for sticking your arms out at your side and flapping around like Big Bird, but perhaps the later Vive version and/or Oculus Touch support might let us live out our Michael Keaton mid-life crisis fantasies.

If you’re looking for novel virtual reality experiences, I do think you should check out Eagle Flight to get a sense of how much fun it can be to soar in VR. After playing it, though, I feel like I’d really enjoy a game with these precise mechanics, but without constraints: a more free-form, less demanding play style that would accentuate the freedom of flight—not detract from it.
