Also you need to search for gold, build the rooms, recruit creatures to fight and of course to defend your dungeon.
The workers dig and build, but the creatures are the ones who fight, some having unique abilities like creating beer, creating mana for magic casting, build traps, torture prisoners, revive dead creatures, etc.
In the underground you can grep creatures and throw them anywhere in the underground but you can't order directly.
If you want them to do something or fight the underground invaders, you need to throw them in the room and hope they will do what you want.

The surface is used to collect resources and to destroy heroes' bases and other missions.
On the surface you control the units like other RTS.

The game has a long campaign (20 missions) with a humorous story and protagonist split personality.
There are also a lot of skirmish game types.

In addition, the game has a lot of DLCs with 6 shorts campaigns (all together 23 missions) which also add skirmish game types and add 3 spells and 3 traps.
The skirmish maps have random underground maps - which allow more diverse games.

I missed Dungeon Keeper so I bought this game. The game is better than I expected. It was divided into two components. First is the underground, same as dungeon keeper but more organized. Second is on the land, which is like normal RTS. You deploy your units from your dungeon base and attack hero land. I didn't finish the game though because it got repeptitive overtime. I would prefer only dungeon component but more of a threat in defending. In this game, traps are too powerful and the town portal spell is really cheating. Some units can be ignored completely. For exp I never tortured any heroes because I see no point. With Orc Naga and Imp are enough to win. There is no counter units anyway. Narrator are annoying sometimes. In addition, the first mission is very slow start. They should just cutscene into dungeon mode right off the bat (I almost dropped the game). Campaigns are creative though. Every mission devs did good job trying to make them difference.

Overall, the game was fun for a while but still lack of depth in strategy.

Add-ons are also more "fair" by adding new campaigns, and not, as in the case of Dungeons 2, adding cut-out segments (like the undead). Here we have the whole "tree" in the stand itself.
Again, an indispensable teacher, although the Polish version should be given to the disadvantage, because the subtitles seem to be translated very unskillfully and definitely without the atmosphere of the original in English.
I definitely recommend it to fans of the series, but also to new people who have nothing to do with the series. They don't need the knowledge of their predecessors, and the difficulty level seems to leave some room for error.

Man, this is great! This is the best Dungeon Keeper clone. For long I have waited for such game after Bullfrog went RIP. Too bad I finished the game way too fast. Now I'm waiting for an addon! Reccomended for everyone, especially for DK2 fans!

I missed out on ever playing Dungeon Keeper, but have to say this game makes up for it. Campaign, Graphics, Gameplay, all are great. The amount of complexity and depth to the dungeon management is good, and the combat above ground is pleasant. I can happily say this is the best Dungeon sim game available. Narrator and story is funny too. Buy it!

First of all, the writing in this is AWFUL. It is childish, heavy-handed, repetitive and goes on and on and on. I turned off the speech volume for a while but the problem is that then you also don't hear important info about the game.

But I tried to tolerate it for the sake of the gameplay which I hoped I'd enjoy because I loved Dungeon Keeper (especially DK1). But for one thing, you can't really play the game at your own pace. Most levels are constructed in a way that you have to rush out there and be ready to defend quickly. Which means very little time for strategizing about how to build your dungeon. Some people might call it challenge, I call it annoying. And exploration doesn't really pay off compared to DK because the things you can find at least in the first 6 or so levels I've played barely have an impact.

Furthermore, the UI doesn't feel too responsive at times. For instance when you pick up creatures from the list of creatures, it may take about two seconds for them to appear by to the hand of evil.

So on my personal scale, it is actually lower than 6/10 but I felt that rating it lower wouldn't be fair because I can see how some people might not mind the gameplay aspect of having to rush I was describing. But the writing and other downsides - I think it's fair to assume that the majority of people will not enjoy those either.

There are 2 moments in this game: building/defending your dungeon and exploring/battling through the wolrd above you. The second one, feels clumsy and rather boring after a few encounters. The commands are, overall, not responsive. For more than once, I ordered my units to move and they stoped along the way to attack barricades. Sometimes, they would even give priority to it as oposed to attacking enemies that were killing them. It's just not fun. You only go to the surface because it's demanded of you.

There are a lot of good ideas and aspects about the game, but, unfortunately, the thing the creator of this game are most proud of is the most annoying one. I would constatly mute the game because the narration is simply awfull, childish and irritating at times (like how the Elf screams when you toss her somewhere or when she dies. I sincerely "alt+f4" the game once because of her "Noooo" scream).

The best aspect of the game is the dungeon building. It feels really good building it up, setting the rooms as you desire and such. The work units function in a very satisfying way, but that's about it.

To sum it up: fun building mechanics, clumsy battle controls and, OMFG, I have no intention of being mean to the studio who developed this, but the narrative brutally KILLS the game.

During my first 20 minutos of playing, I thought this was going to be a 8/10 game. But going higher than 5 would be an error.

Without the whining and attention seeking of the story and script I could put it up to an average 6.5/10 without a doubt – with that aspect I could reduce it to a 4/10 – but that is me – I hate this- the style and frequency and of this campy crud.

Dungeons 3 is varied and does seem to have variation and certainly pays tribute to other admired games, but with the choreography of a zombie and narration which is so loathsomely whining and campey and childish.

Dungeons 3 is more like dungeon keeper - dungeon wise than Dungeons 1 (that i have played and hated) and as much as I think this has made the dungeon mechanic very playable - it does not feel as original and I lament the devs have lost that originality as there is not alot like Dungeons I admit.

As much as it is an unusual game design which I get – where you make your dungeon and explore the under world and then send creatures to the overworld in a Warcraft style RTS (without interestingness of that world(or the pace))(as well as manage your creaturees and dungeon).

However this interesting game design does not save it; given each aspect really is not that fun to play on it's own merits. If I looked at the game through this variation, then I would have imagined I would undoubtably liked it as my perfect game... But I don't - it is quite average:

The overworld is alot like Warcraft but without the base building. it is slow and does get boring quite quickly - it works, but could be better.

Unfortunately the main reason why I hated Dungeons in the first place was because of the way the story is run - there is a tongue in cheek cheesie-campness at every corner, where the cutting in of this loathsome measure is a lot more frequently than would be desired. Again I can see where the writer is trying to be funny, but in the end it can come across as forced and obvious – let alone it not being my thing. I will make it clear this is one of the core complaints to this game and this makes it impossible to enjoy.

I will admit I have played this for about 6 hours and would aim to review a game for longer, but I have seen enough and I was glad to leave the story in the muck where I left it – almost had a headache.

In this mode, the game is Tower Defense. When you bring your creatures to the surface, the game becomes Real Time Strategy as you attack heroes and fortifications.

    The Good:
    - Great hybrid of Tower Defense and Real-Time Strategy
    - The Easy mode is pretty relaxed and easy, with an occasional moment of adrenaline. Just the way I like it.
    - Great humour and dialogue that is actually fun to listen to (obviously, Your Mileage May Vary). They make fun of or reference pretty much every Fantasy trope imaginable, especially other video games.
    - The game controls are easy to understand, and it's pretty straightforward to figure out how to build a successful dungeon.
    - It was fun for me to figure out the traps and watch the dumb heroes fall into them and die.
    - I found the main plot surprisingly fun! It actually has a bit of hidden depth to it, with a theme of: Be Careful When You Fight Monsters Lest You Become One Yourself

    The Bad:
    - Like with that other Kalipso game Tropico, it does get repetitive after a while. The start of every level pretty much means doing the same thing again. They alleviate this somewhat by constantly introducing new things every new level, but it doesn't entirely solve this problem.
    - For combat, it was tough for me to figure out any kind of coherent strategy per se. I could tell that certain enemies should be attacked first (e.g. healers and area attackers), but otherwise didn't have enough information on the combat mechanics to possibly come up with a real strategy other than: build a big army.

    The Ugly:
    - I once encountered a bug where a dangerous tear in reality, which I was supposed to destroy, was inaccessible. This really sucked. The bug fixed itself before it was too late, but for a little while there it looked like I was going to have to load from my save of 30 minutes ago.
    - There were a couple parts where I ended up having to load the game because the protagonist died. I wasn't paying attention for a few moments and she just died almost instantly. It was a bit frustrating to redo a whole previous sequence. A good tip would be to quick save with F5 fairly often to reduce the impact of this.
    - The UI for loading your game is a bit confusing. They seem to mix up the order. It can be hard to find the game you were last playing.

Dungeons III is a good hybrid of real-time strategy and dungeon management. The quests are fun, the simple mechanics are tight, and the humor is nice, even if it can be grating at times. Its lack of difficulty will turn off anyone looking for a challenge, and the lack of a community means that those who like playing with others will find nothing here. The whole experience is worth it if you like what's on display here.

Dungeons III offers what Dungeons II (a limited clone of Dungeon Keeper) offered two years ago, expanded with simple RTS mechanics. It’s a competent game, but its story (along with the humor) is lame, the interface needed more work and though the dungeons look really good, visuals above ground are... colorful (that’s the only positive thing I can say about them). Dungeons 3 lets us with a frown. The management part is very good with lot of possibilities but on the other hand, RTS part is too classic. It's too redundant to be a fully enjoyable experience.
