Sure the premise got improved here and new features added in too, but it still feels like a downgrade for me on how the Game plays compared to the first DS.

It's funny to be reviewing this game almost 13 years since its release, but I finally managed to spend the time and money to try out this game after spending hundreds of my childhood hours on the original Dungeon Siege and its expansion.

All I can say is, wow. This game is beautiful and meticulously designed. A lot of story and roleplay elements were put into this game, and you're getting so much more than you'd expect from it. The world is enormous, lush with plenty of foliage and topography. Item variety has vastly expanded. After many years of playing all kinds of fantasy RPG games, it's amazing how this old gem trumps over so many of them.

Now, the combat in DS2 isn't as dynamic as it was in DS1 (it's more one-dimensional and a bit clunky because of the manual intervention and dodgy AI), but it's still acceptable if you don't overcomplicate it. The combat is the primary reason why I couldn't rate this game any higher. (If you haven't played the prequel yet, you probably won't know how much better the combat was in it.)

The monster variety isn't plentiful, so you end up fighting the same monsters for long periods of time. The boss battles are a bit lackluster too; the final boss was uneventful and nowhere near as interesting as the final boss in DS1. Also, I wasn't pleased that DS2 didn't have a specialized multiplayer map like DS1 did, which means that there's no real incentive to play multiplayer unless you want to do co-op with friends.

(If you're playing this game now because it was ported to Steam, be sure to enable the Broken World expansion pack with the guide on Steam. It is possible to play this game in multiplayer via GameRanger. If you're finding it hard to play this game on higher resolutions, I suggest installing mods to increase the font size.)

Overall, I am glad I put the time in to play this since I never got the chance to do so when I was younger. I might not enjoy the combat as much as I did the first, but the rest of the game and its rich story definitely made the game a worthwhile experience for me. You should definitely try out both of the games, as well as the mods available for them. This (base) game deserves an 8.5/10.

    BROKEN WORLD - 7/10
This sequel expansion adds an additional map with more monsters to slay and a storyline that follows after the events of the main game. You can continue using your current band of characters by loading up the map with your main character, or by using a premade character. And this sounds all fine and dandy, but...

By this point in time, nothing really comes as a surprise to you. Stores are still pretty much useless, reagents are still unnecessary, there aren't really any new spells to add variety to combat, the story and map itself is uninteresting, the list goes on. The stale combat system that was introduced in DS2 is boring to use again the second time around.

Everything was the exact same. It almost feels like the devs slapped together an extra map and called it a day. A rehash that doesn't introduce anything new. Sure, the map is unique, but it there's no sense of adventure or depth. The last act in it was just a linear corridor that looked like it got rushed. I wasn't pleased by this expansion, and it actually weighed on my overall experience of DS2 negatively. I'd say that it's safe to skip, unless you just want more content.

I have played many dungeon crawlers throughout my life, Diablo123, Darkstone, Torchlight, Chocobo Dungeon 1 & 2, etc etc etc including of course dungeon siege 1 and dungeon siege 3. OK to make long story short this is the best dungeon crawler I have played so far, yes superior to all the other games I just mentioned except for maybe Chocobo Dungeon 2 since that game is amazing too. This game does right everything dungeon siege 1 didn't do right and does way better everything dungeon siege 3 did right. DS 2 is just the superior game in the franchise by far, if you like this genre then you MUST play this game.

-This game is far superior to any Diablo game btw just my two cents

Even in 2014 this game still outperform lots of ARPG out there in the market on all aspects like the engrossing storytelling, the exhilarating voice acting, the well-designed combat system and the diversity on looting and questing, I'm enjoying the replay of this game so much even if I just beat D3 and built some characters in POE.

I gave it a 9/10 because it lasts through time, 1 minus

Lots of running around and beating enemies that are tougher than your party. So lots of dying / running away, recovering and running back. Not horribly fun. Ok so this is no Diablo 2, but it is a decent RPG hack'n'cast affair. The party system works well even if hampered by the slightly dodgy AI. Anyone who likes running around gulping down potions and fighting a ridiculous amount of mosters from beyond will be right at home here.

But it's now clear that Dungeon Siege II is now undeniably one of the action RPG stars. It makes many, many welcome tweaks and improvements--far to many to list here--and is sure to thrill any action RPG fan.
  3. A considerable entry in the field of hack and slash RPGs for the PC. The action is intense, there are a host of options for character development, and the story, while negligible, still more than serves its purpose. Save for a few annoyances, the bankrupt AI being chief among them, this is a game that will see any fan of the genre coming away satisfied.
