OK so this game needs some positive press, so here's my 2 cents. I've played the Single Player game thoroughly. I'm level 22 or so on Steam (multiplayer). I've had a lot of fun with this game. I mean, a lot. If there are people out there who are deciding not to try the game out because of the bad reviews, I would just suggest to them to try the game out themselves. At least the PC demo. Sadly, this game is not as good as Duke Nukem 3D and fell a little flat on the expectations I had. Its flaws aside, this game was still fun. Duke Nukem is as charismatic and as full of himself as ever. The one-liners and pop references are funny and relevant, reminding you that you're playing a Duke Nukem game. Overall, unless you are a fan of the franchise, I can not recommend this title because on its own, this game falls flat. If you are a fan of Duke Nukem, however, I think you'll enjoy this game. I'm personally dumbfounded by the terrible reviews it has been receiving as the game as a lot of variety, cool weapons, likable enemies and allies and Duke Nukem humor to top it off. If you don't take this game too seriously it can be a lot of fun. [ /QUOTE ]

The positive reviews must have been written by employees of the program designers. Its the worst $44 ever spent on a game. The 1 min spent each time you re-spawn is awful, especially if your a bad player. and you die often. On the positive side and there are very few, its a good story and the graphics are fun.
Do not waste money on this game, wait until its available in Wallmart for $4.95.

You don't give bonus marks because it managed to survive, you don't give bonus marks because its main character reminded you of the good old days, and you don't give bonus marks merely because others think badly of it. Anyway, despite all the negative reviews, I went ahead and finished the game. It has a good shooter mechanics, interesting weapons, interesting stages of game (mini-Duke, monster truck). I liked fighting/shooting/executing the aliens (boy do they have some new tricks up their sleeves) so yeah the core mechanics were pretty well done. The 2 disputable features: regenerating health and 2 guns at one time didn't bother me too much, although I admit I missed scrambling around looking for health packs when I'm seriously wounded in older FPS. There is also a healthy amount of cultural references (the first boss cracked me up a bit) and one-liners to keep players entertained. NPCs are hopelessly bland, their attempts at humor fall flat on the face (except for a few of them) but nevermind that, that has never been the Duke's concern. What led to the (admittedly exaggerated) animosity toward the game is probably the level design / pacing. While the alien-bashing was fun, too many a times the action is halted in favor of solving puzzles and navigating through obstacle courses. While they are fairly simplistic, they feel very contrived and they effectively stopped the game from gaining momentum. Plus the game is very restrictive in the sense that most of the time you end up in a confined space, fighting off several waves of enemies, and a previously locked door mysteriously unlocks and you go ahead to solve a puzzle. Rinse and repeat. Even if you are not in a confined space, running around doesn't reveal any interesting places (such as the secrets in Duke Nukem 3D) or anything interesting to do (if we disregard the minimalistic interaction with several in-game objects). My conclusion? I had fun. But sometimes the game feels unnecessarily tedious. It would have been a much better game if there were more alien-bashing and way way less puzzle-solving / platformer action. Expand

There's no cleverness to the way the maps work. They're boring. Wolfenstein 3D had more interesting maps and they didn't even have the benefit of a 3rd axis.

Speaking of cleverness, the game simply isn't funny. While there was a certain charm in Duke Nukem 3D (It helps that that game wasn't awful), it wears off fast here. It's so self-indulgent, it almost made me vomit. Also, I'm all for "offensive humor", but the way this game treats women is sickening. It's like the Gearbox staff have never talked to real women (which wouldn't surprise me). I give it one point for not giving me an STD.

Graphics - 8: I've heard complaints on the graphic quality, and sure, it's no Crysis 2, but why are there people still playing Diablo 2 11 years later, a terrible (by comparison) looking game, with graphics that were nearly outdated before it came out? They get the job done, and 1-2 year old rigs like mine will take it all and smile. Sound - 7: This would score higher if it weren't for a glitch during the opening intro video. The sound was constantly cutting in and out. And that's a MAJOR buzz-kill when you've been waiting for this intro for 15 years. Might be sound or video drivers...might be because I'm still rocking XP. But in-game is great. Very satisfying explosions, gunfire, etc. Gameplay - 8: This too would have scored higher, but I'm afraid it's a little infected with a case of consolitis. There aren't action mini-games all over the place (at least yet), but there's no manual save that I can tell, only checkpoints. But that gripe aside, it's what a pure descendant of Duke should be. Those expecting Deus Ex or Mass Effect, go elsewhere. Multiplayer - ?: Uh...it has it, I know that. I'll get back to you on that. Conclusion - Those looking for depth and bleeding edge graphics, go elsewhere. Those wanting a classic Duke experience mixed with Team America, this is your game. The only other game in as long as I can remember that has elicited this many laughs was Portal 2. It's everything it should be. In other words, parents of children under a maturity age of 17 or 18, please leave this one on the shelf. I'd like to get the most obvious thing out of the way, something professional reviewers seem to be harping on: Duke Nukem is a pompous, cruel, despicable self-centered **** of a character. He's been that way since Duke Nukem 3D and that hasn't changed; and in the spirit of Duke, if you don't like that, tough **** The likeability of the character should have virtually no bearing in a game review, and it won't in this one.

The strongest game-play aspect of the game is it's single-player campaign. The controls are straightforward, the mechanics of the aim-and-shoot game-play are as expected, strong. Everything works as it should and interfacing with it is a quality experience not unlike other modern games. The platforming works well. There are some balance issues throughout the campaign, and the two gun restriction presented in DNF seems like a pretty unnecessary change considering the style of gameplay that's employed. The game will hurdle multiple waves of 2-3 enemies at you and require you to conserve your ammunition with no weapons in sight, and this happens multiple times throughout. It's a strategic game mechanic used in areas where no strategy is required. Ultimately, it ends up being a pain in the ass. The AI is strong enough to put up a decent fight; strafing straight-forward attacks, leading shots, intelligently using explosives, and has particularly clever pathfinding mechanics which make it difficult to relax when engaging multiple hostiles. The AI recognizes choke points and will often avoid them if possible. It would be nice if the maps had more complexity during engagements because I feel that the AI's not being used to it's full potential; but due to the weapons limitations, it may not necessarily be a bad thing.

The weapon arsenal available to Duke is a mixed bag. The shotgun is the star of the show here, useful on virtually every hostile you engage that you can get close to, except for bosses. The pistol is a useable last resort weapon, and the ripper does a pretty good job as a medium-to-far range tool. The RPG also packs quite a punch. The Devastator, on the other hand, is underpowered and doesn't hold it's own in boss battles, where it's necessary to have an explosive weapon to deal damage. The Shrink Ray doesn't seem to fit in the game at all, and the Freeze Ray is woefully ineffective despite having infinite ammo.

The story is standard Duke faire: aliens invade Earth and Duke needs to save the world. It's a throwaway story that Duke's persona does nothing to energize it. The one biggest disappointment I have with the setting is that Duke's 1-liners are largely not funny. There's not a lot of creativity in the application of played-out movie quotes and a surprisingly high amount of recycled content from Duke Nukem 3D.

The multiplayer aspects however leave quite a bit to be desired. While there are plenty of maps, the gameplay modes (Deathmatch/TeamDM, CTF, King of the Hill) are played out, uninspired tripe. While these game modes might have been acceptable in 1998, it isn't now. Multiplayer Duke is worth maybe five to ten hours of entertainment before you'll get bored with it.

The game's graphics aren't particularly strong. Much of the color pallete is either muted or washed out and while the character models have a fair amount of detail, some of the textures look like they haven't been cleaned up since they last converted engines. It's not disgusting or horrible, but the graphics don't do anything to benefit the game-play experience.

For that matter, neither does the sound. The music for the most part, are generic, unmemorable guitar riffs, the environmental and enemy sound effects are uninspired, and the weapon sound effects range from forgettable to, in the case of the shotgun, downright awful. Duke's one-liners almost universally sound flat and indifferent.

The PC version of this game has a handful of technical glitches, with the most annoying one being that when crossing checkpoints, the game will automatically re-spawn you at the checkpoint location, which is disorienting. I also noticed several times where I would shoot an enemy with the railgun only to have them delay their death animation for several seconds. The load time issues that cripple the console versions of this game are nowhere to be found on the PC.

Overall, the game has the feel of quite a bit of effort poured into it, but at the same time hindered by it's extremely long development cycle and, coincidentally rush to production once Gearbox got the rights to finish it. This isn't a great game, but it makes me optimistic that Duke Nukem 4 can be with a more stable production schedule.

The combat and the one liners (as rare as they may be) are perfect, essentially. Shoot bad guy, bad guy dies, you've got balls of steel. The regenerating health and 2-weapon limit are annoying -- but not enough to sour my day. What truly makes this game unbearable and horrible is how slow-paced it is. The game even includes a lot of very-fitting elevator music as you walk around, doing basically nothing. You'll often think "what am I doing? What's the point of this?" as you solve pointless puzzles that often involve pushing things, jumping on things, and finding things. It's BORING. Duke Nukem is a badass who solves his problems with guns and alcohol -- not logic.

In the end, even if you cream your pants over Duke's 1-liners, the game is not even remotely playable. If they only removed all the "filler" content and narrow the gameplay down to the 2 essential elements that made Duke Nukem 3D a great game, Duke Nukem Forever could have stood a chance. Those three things are: Killing Aliens and Badass One-Liners.

The critics are morons who act like this game should have been a masterpiece, which it isn't but it's far from bad. This game is very enjoyable. Not only is the game play amazing and the weaponry pretty sweet, but over all, it's just a really fun game to play. Everybody thinks that it's graphics are to outdated and the story sucks. Well yeah the graphics are a bit out dated, but what do you expect. The game has been in development for 14 years! Once 3D Realms went under, Gearbox was kind enough to finish it up. Once the public found out about this, everybody started pressuring them more and more to release it. Yes, the development towards the end was rushed which caused the game to be lacking in some areas, but the game is still very fun and I enjoyed playing it. I've heard many things from people, like the graphics are dated, the game play sucks, the humor is childish and offensive... well guess what, it's a Duke Nukem game, of course it's gonna be offensive, if you don't like it, don't play the game! And no, the game play doesn't suck, unless the only games you've ever played in your life are call of duty modern warfare or halo, then yes, you may not be used to a game that is actually good. I just can't believe the reviews critics are giving this game. When the game first came out in North America, the average metacritic score was 62! Now its 58! There are so many games that are far worse than DNF, yet they always seem to get pretty good scores and this game just gets crapped on. The only game critic I think that gave DNF a good, honest score was PC Gamer, because they give their honest opinion on games, instead of just saying a game sucks because it doesn't meet all their stupid expectations. And if you're playing DNF on an Xbox 360 and giving it a bad review, then you're a stupid moron. Playing ports of games that were meant for the PC in the first place is a bad idea, especially with DNF. Development for this game began back in 1997, when the only console out at the time that didn't suck was the Playstation 1. So when some dumb 15 year-old says he doesn't like the game, well that's because he was still crapping his diapers when Duke 3D came out, and had no idea what games were really like back then. In a nutshell, Duke Nukem Forever is well worth the money, and is a solid fps game. No, it is not worth waiting 14 years for, but really... what game is? Thank you for reading my rant and I hope you realize that you should never say a game sucks because some stuck up critic douchebag says it does. Expand

The game is non-stop hilarity, and the only people who don't like the game are obviously offended by the jokes. Maybe the offended never studied parody, but Duke Nukem Forever is a shining example of the ancient art form. I can't wait for a sequel or more games that lighten up a little like Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior. If you are offended by Duke Nukem, maybe it is because the joke is on you and the ridiculous facades you defend, such as the proof given. *Proof: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/03/25/duke-nukem-dustup-games-capture-babe-mode-players-slapping-women/
Those lies from the Womens Center aside, the game is beautiful, the boss battles are so EPIC they beat out Zelda games, the action is well paced, and every corner nook and cranny is crammed with video game parody or just outright making fun of other video games. And if the Women's Center thinks men become derogatory to women because of a funny video game, maybe they should have helped Jack Thompson in his crusade that said everyone who plays a video game will become a mass murderer, or helped the movement against movies or music decades ago that have been proved false.

An awful game. It's so bad, I gave up half-way through and deleted it. I loved playing the original Duke Nukem games in the 80's and 90's, but this new version disappoints. They keep saying this game took 12 years to release, and it shows. The graphics are dated and the game play is clunky and awkward. I wish I could get my money back!

Duke's health (ego) auto regenerates, but that doesn't make the game easier at all.
The game uses a "trial and error" unforgiving system, and you are going to loose lots of lives because you didn't guessed correctly what will happen next.
The game demands from you to do what you must do very accurately, and what exactly you have to do is something you will discover yourself after dying numerous times and trying anything your mind can imagine.
Some aliens can kill you with a single hit,or two in most cases, and when the game throws 4 to 5 of them on you suddenly and they come from places you've already been before and you didn't so anybody,or it might just spawn them right next to you, having you flanked and surrounded, and then dying.
The game will be throwing hordes of monsters again and again, and there will be times the next wave of aliens will come before your ego replenishes from the last fight.
There will be times you will die by a single hit, from an enemy not even visible on the screen.
There is a 1 weapon limit, and it's bad not only because it doesn't fit Duke's character, but also because it doesn't fit the rest of the gameplay.
There will be times like this:
    * You have two weapons with ya,the ones ideal for the situation on the level you are in to.
*Suddenly and unexpectedly your screen goes black and you go to next level.
*You find a room full of enemies that you weren't prepared to fight, because you doesn't have the ideal weapons for them.
*You search around to find an ideal weapon, and there are no weapons at all before that room.
*You exit the game, and re-load the level you completed some moments ago so you will exit it with the right guns this time.
Playing DNF's campaign is going to get you frustrated and furious, and if you ever broke gamepads or keyboards while playing a game,I assure you that DNF isn't for you.
    The game's interactivity doesn't excite.
There is less interactivity in DNF than in DN3D that came 14 years ago,and somebody would expect that a game 14 years later would have at least the same amount of interactivity if not more.
    But it's not like that.
In DN3D you would shoot the toilets, and water would come out from the pipes, but not on DNF.
In DN3D you would shoot the pipes and natural gas would come out,but not on DNF.
In DN3D you would shoot a cash machine and money would pop out,but not in DNF.
The list could go on,but I guess you got my point.
Level design is linear on all levels, and there is only one route to go.
You won't get lost as you did on DN3D's complex levels.
In DNF there aren't secret rooms or entire secret levels either, and that limits replay value and vanishes the exploration feeling and factor that was dominant on DN3D.
If you try to explore around, the game will punish you with invisible walls.
There are many invisible walls and the developers could just remove them and let us go on some places,or place physical hurdles,to make it at least reasonable.
There are too many QTE's and you will have to mash the buttons on your keyboard or controller as fast as you can,but they appear with such a frequency they get annoying IMHO.
There isn't variety on the game's puzzles.
You will have to redo the same the same type of puzzles again and again at different levels, and the most common is the barrel type. This puzzle requires you to look around to find all the barrels and then place them to the right spot.
That's it. Repeat on next level. And on the one after. And again later.
Duke Nukem Forever is a game that won't keep you interested enough to finish it because of its story or its gameplay, but because of stubborness.
You have to be very patient and stubborn to keep playing it to the finish and tolerate its bad story, bad graphics, and its punitive gameplay.
Most likely it's a game won't play again after you finish it once,if you ever finish it.

    Last Words
Duke Nukem Forever was one of my most anticipated games for years.
There have been many promises, even more speculation and even more wait, that lead to very high expectations and too much hype.
When the game finally released,it wasn't "The best game of all time" as 3D Realms once promised, but instead it didn't even catch up with its predecessor, and DNF fell much lower.
Lots of wrong design decisions, abstract and uncompleted ideas, and bad execution make this game not good enough to stand along the rest of the series. It made me believe that it would be better if it would never come out,so we could all stay with memories of a game that would be the best game of all time, even if we could never play it.

The PC version of this game does not have texture problems, the graphics are not "from 2003". They look a couple of years out of date but are tidy and professional. The game has a slow start, with perhaps the weaker level design at the beginning, but the rest of the game has much more interesting design and fun levels. The game is more linear and easy than it's predecessor, which in my view is good. Hunting for key-cards and med-kits makes the game much slower, so the better pacing improved the game-play. The two-weapon limit was disappointing.

The game is decent, fun, no more offensive than it's predecessor, and is simply part of a wider media crucifixion. Any review which gives the PC version of this game less than 5/10 is simply not being objective and should be dismissed.

Neither did anyone expect anything more from it. It has variety, which i definitely did not expect. It has a nice level design, good looking enemies and a fun gameplay. Gameplay is a horrible mishmash of ideas from the past and the present, and few of them play off well against each other. For some insane reason you can only carry two guns. Seriously Gearbox? Youâ

Those who mention graphics about ANY game - you are completely stupid - no seriously you need to get off the internet. DNF is FUN - it's childish, immature, crass, exactly what I was expecting. Yeah it's linear...so was Black Ops main campaign...but it managed to get "good reviews" by IGN and Gamespot...the spineless reviewers that they are. DNF is fun for those who know what they are getting into ahead of time...I will for sure be replaying it and hope to enjoy the multiplayer - esp. capture the babe for as long as a few faithful players hang around for it. In closing...those of you who claim to have a brain in your head, read all the red comments and see how lacking of substance they are...obviously written by 6 year old kids during their lunch breaks at school and their source of information came from some emo waste of life. The Single player is ok, but could use less of the crude humor and more innovative gameplay. It doesn't feel right not having multiple weapons, or health. Gone is the thrill of finding Atomic health. They shouldn't of turned it into another regen based shooter with a 2 gun limit. The game is extremely easy, even on the hardest difficulty. I would of preferred the hardest difficulty to use the old style health system. The Multiplayer is fun, especially with friends, but the Co-Op mode is sorely missed! Many gamers are upset and giving Duke bad reviews because of this alone. If DNF had Co-Op many gamers would be more forgiving on their reviews and more would of purchased the game to play with thier friends.

The load time on the PC is on average is 2 to 5 seconds, versus the Xbox at nearly a minute. The textures, sounds, graphics are also superior on the PC. However there is too much blur, so had to turn off post processing effects to make the game less nausuating.

Overall its a fun game, but could of been done alot better. Many negative reviews are comming from people disappointed after so much hype, or they played the console versions.

The game has outdated graphics and gameplay mechanisms, and is extremely buggy, and is unable to support more then three enemies on a screen at a time. But the game does mix itself up by having severals interacting throughout it, but the puzzles get repetive and are fairly clich'e. But it's not the worst game, but is only good for rent, do not buy it.

A great classic Duke romp. The reason it gets so much hate, is because expecations are far too high because of the very extended dev time. This is a triple A game and deserves that respect. Great fun. decent graphics by todays standards.

The humour was totally mis-judged, took what was a great aspect of the original 3d and totally blew it. The game itself was pretty "Meh", but I was cringing throughout at the unfunny jokes and the incredibly over-use of catchphrases. Killed what should have been ace, and certainly had all the hype and buildup of something worthwhile. Shame on the developers.

Not sure why the reviewers are trashing the game, think has something to do with them not recieving advanced copies to review. I found the entire game entertaining, and not sure what people are playing when they say its boring, theres alot more fun content in this game compared to most FPS shooters I've played of late. I hope to see a level editor or a followup game to this franchise soon.

This is one of those, good for one play games. It continues off basically where the last Duke Nukem left off. However, it uses a game play system heavily outdated as combat is very simplistic, with the exception to a few extraordinary enemies. The basic unit encounters are more of a challenge then their boss counterparts. This is literally a game out of its time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. duke nukem fans will love DNF. but sadly after a very long and tragic development, duke nukem forever is a mess. but before we play the blame game lets get the bad points adressed with DNF before the good. the pacing of the game is all over the place. with dull puzzles and platforming. with some design stuck in the late nineties then in the year 2011. but what 3d realms may have stumbled on. gearbox tryed its very best to make this game as good as its going to get. as a life long fan of duke it was a very bittersweet game to play. to laughing my ass off to the christian bale joke at the start of the game. or the classic nod to the legend of leeroy jenkins. to the grind of jumping from cog to cog as mini duke. or some of the dull boss fights. but the spirit of duke thoughout the game is still alive by the awesome musings of the voice of duke john st john so there is still hope that duke will reclaim his crown as the king of fps in the next duke game. its such a shame this game wasnt the classic we waited 12+ years for. but its ok. not great... but worth a play for any duke nukem fan. Years went by, and no word on its release, and I forgot about it, up until around mid 2010, when I again saw that it was being worked on. When the day finally came around for its release, I bought it right when it was available. Was it good? No. Was it bad? No. It was somewhere in the middle. While it had its good elements, such as classic one-liners, potty humor, and good first person combat and shooting mechanism, it lacked a driven story line, good multiplayer, and graphics (I'm not one for grading down on graphics, usually, but in this case, it was all created on the outdated Unreal 2.5 engine, which lowers my score for it a bit.) I was also disappointed to see it take the road of most modern First Person Shooters by, instead of having a health meter and requiring health powerups, gave Duke an "Ego" meter, which regenerates if no damage is taken for a short period of time. However, I did like the single player campaign. It was perfectly blended with the difficulty rising as the story progressed, and the campaign offered some good humor and pop cultural reference, just like in DN3D. Nice touch. So to sum it all up, Duke Nukem Forever is not a good or bad game, it is somewhere in the middle. Does it deserve a play through? Absolutely, give it a try. Expand

A game begins with invasion of aliens and retired Duke have to safe the world again. Story itself is good for a shooter, but it won't give you something deep. The graphics are average for todays games, you won't get displeased by it. Weapon choice is not big, but is enough to rip your enemy, also you can fight with your fists. There are some usable items like a beer, drugs that give you bonus to attack and etc. In some levels of the game you will have to get shrunk with help of shrunk machine and then overcome puzzles and obstacles to move forward on the game. It's fun to be shrunk, you can see all the items from different angle, which you wouldn't ever see, also the Duke's voice "shrunk" too. Driving a jeep is horrible, even if it gives a different gameplay, it's not worth it. The huge hog bosses are cool, that's what you hope to see in every game. But if want something more from this game, but it won't give you nothing more. The hard work not always provide a big success, that's what can be said about this game.
