The game is a lot of fun, it´s challenging and it´s pretty long for a modern first person shooter. The only reason to give it only 9 instead of 10 points is that the atmosphere is not as perfect as in DN3D. Expand

Don't waste your money, this game is seriously outdated, the game play is stodgy, the graphics are sub par, the maps are extremely boring, this game might have been cool if it was released 8 years ago, definitely a major step back compared to the original Duke Nukem, very disappointed.

This game was obviously rushed out the door and lacks any kind of depth or attention to detail. The game is the living embodiment of linear and is 10 years behind the times as far as game play is concerned. It's one saving grace is the comedy but all the laughs in the world can't keep me awake while running through a hamster tube maze of boredom.

Old blocky level design of 1997 meets some new age models, meets a texture pack, meets some tweaks. Watching all these obvious things pile together into an uncomfortable but kind of quirky heap - was actually cool. What's not cool - however is the obscure nature a lot of the levels have been thrown together. The game is about 50% too long, it's like playing 3 bad first person shooters from 1997 thrown together into one package. All levels drag, and drag and drag again. The pacing is horrible. Also the jokes feel forced, and the level design is significantly inferior to duke nukem 3d. Multiplayer is also terrible, and it omits the fun co-op from duke nukem 3d as well. In the end, this was curious for me. However someone who has no ties to duke nukem forevers infinite development process should never play this. EVER. Expand

I can see why many reviews absolutely trash this game. I myself didn't really follow the 15 year development cycle and attached hype, but I can see how, when one waits so long for a game and it ends up being average at best, the fury of a long-time fan can be released.

I can see why many reviews absolutely trash this game. I myself didn't really follow the 15 year development cycle and attached hype, but I can see how, when one waits so long for a game and it ends up being average at best, the fury of a long-time fan can be released.

Now, this certainly isn't Duke Nukem 3D by any means, nor is it a particularly great or even good game, nor is it innovative, but in the age of FPS games trying to emulate Call of Duty with little variation, it's a breath of fresh air... well, a breath of fresh air that's been sitting in a can since 2008 with a little bit of tweaking done to it three years later. While it may have taken a patch or three, the PC support is better than most modern games (even though the game was built for PC and ported *to* consoles...), with increased weapon limit, customisable FOV (50-90 if I remember right), actual, numerous, and functional graphics options, etc.

Despite the Halo 2-style health system (Ego = shields, non-visible health bar, both regenerate) that completely ruins the Halo joke in the game, checkpoint-only saving system, and the constant feeling of everything being pieced together from various builds of the game (though very little seems to date back to the 1998 and 2001 builds based on their respective trailers) in both graphics (such as some textures looking on par for a 2008 PC game and some looking on par for a 2003-2004 game) and gameplay, the end result is an average, even pretty fun at times that, while not worth the $50 launch price or the much pricier special editions, is well worth the $20 I see it go for these days.

I can't say anything about either of the DLC packs, having not purchased or played them myself, but the multiplayer map pack is questionable at best considering I doubt the player base is large enough to justify an extra $10.

To summarise, it's linear like most FPS games, but not to the extent of, say, Call of Sequel: Money Maker X. It's a mishmash of 12 years of shooter "evolution" thanks to George Brussard's desire to have every new little thing in his game. It retains the classic Duke 3D humour (albeit a bit more prevalent due to more memory/storage space than in the DOS days and, in some cases, more low-brow). It mixes some more "old-school" FPS elements such as puzzles, useless-but-fun interactivity, platforming (made easier by full-body first person view) with modern elements such as two weapon limit (raised to 4 on PC after a couple patches), regenerating health, forced checkpoint only saving, scripted FPV cutscenes. Despite some performance issues and many of the gameplay elements being lifted or inspired by console games, it maintains some of the best PC support I've seen out of many a modern multiplatform game. It's something different from the "interactive movie modern military shooter with awful multiplayer" norm. Last of all, it's actually pretty fun.

By now I'm sure you know what Duke Nukem is about: some blonde macho-man who loves the ladies is on a killing spree against aliens. The plot is completely throwaway, it's just an 8-hour action game where you fight against aliens in varying environments. The game is pretty enough (on PC, I can't speak for consoles, I hear they have quite a bit of issues!), the classic monsters and weapons from Duke3D made their return, the humour is there, there are some awesome interactive things and the action feels satisfying.

Though, while I feel many of the very negative reviews are the way they are solely because of the long wait, I must admit I too expected more from the game. The 2001 trailer hinted at something that would be very epic... in the end we got something that's fun to play and definitely not generic, but after such a long wait it's only natural to expect more. Not perfection, but just... more. The game ended quite abruptly after a recycled bossfight and the game just feels ironically unpolished and rushed in some places. If you've followed up on DNF's development the reason why that is so, even after 15 years, should be obvious, what with multiple "restarts" and ultimately moving to a different company near the end of development. DNF shines in some parts whereas it is a mess in others.

I am hoping that they will release the planned Single Player DLC and that for that, they will be able to properly polish it from the start. Hopefully, it will not be such a double-edged sword and will be able to please more players.

Gameplay: First and foremost, Duke Nukem was never a complicated game. It was simple. Matter of fact all there was, was getting keycards, pushing some buttons to open a door, and killing bad guys. The story was barely there other than Duke was pissed about aliens invading. Sounds simple doesn't it? Ya Gearbox actually managed to botch this up.

The happened to include everything PC gamers hate in modern day FPS. Small corridors, health regen that activates too quick, 2 gun carry limit....seriously? They got the butt kicking right, just aim and start shooting, but it ends there. You're lead through corridors and hall ways with no freedom to even jump on top of slot machine. The first half of the game is introducing all these retarded mini games that you're forced to sit through. God forbid they let you do what Duke does best. No lets make you constantly write on stuff like people actually care.

Once you get through these hallways you're locked in a non stop enemy spawning room where you run in circles shooting bad guys till they stop spawning and you can go open up a door that just happens to be unlocked now. Rinse and repeat. If your health is low screw it, just go sit behind cover for 5 seconds Graphics: I think they're fine for the most part. I'm not much of a graphics whore. I still play old games because they were fun, not because of the gfx. Sadly the gameplay made the gfx the only good thing about the game and even then..they were only mediocre.

Sound: Voice acting was the only good thing about the game. It felt in place but sadly the sound is locked to 2 channel. You'll have to find your own way to get it on surround sound.

Everything else: You can tell the game was made for consoles. The controls are garbage. Mouse is unnatural. The game even smells of the fact you can tell they were trying to cash in on the Duke Nukem name and that'd gain them instant glorification. All those loved cheesy Duke lines were way over used in just about every scene possible and every possible moment.

Bottom line? It's a basic console shooter. Nothing more. Just happens to have the Duke name on it which sadly this sort of game is already all over the place and sorry to say, I liked Call of Duty better....and I absolutely detest that series.

Duke Nukem Forever was such a fun game, I really don't get why many reviewers decided to hate on it. There are a few problems, make no mistake - mainly the 2007-2008 level graphics, the fact that Duke can, for some reason, carry only 2 guns, regenerating health instead of health packs. Everything else, though, is excellent, ESPECIALLY if you enjoy Duke Nukem humour. The jokes are second to none, the game just keeps a smile on your face for extended periods of time.

There's a LOT of attention to detail (pretty entertaining Duke Nukem burger cartons in one of the stages, for instance). The game offers great variety, it's not all shooting, there are puzzles, there's some first-person platforming (nothing too difficult), a lot of things are covered. The stages are quite varied, both in terms of design and in terms of what you have to do - there are driving stages, water stages, stages where you are small and have to fight your ways through rats or even big aliens, a stage set like a Western movie, etc. There are plenty of entertaining mini-games like pool, weight lifting, pinball, etc. The boss battles are quite epic and intense.

I guess the game is a bit on the easy side on Normal difficulty, but then again, you're Duke Nukem, it's natural that you kick epic amounts of ass. The story is nothing special, of course, but the game is all about the humour. Duke Nukem is better than ever, I'd say Jon St. John's voice is even more badass 15 years later!

Please take time to read this, it's an honest input from me about this game based on what I have played thus far:

This game is not ground breaking or *insert something here to make it sound like I'm intelligent when it comes to what makes games good*

The game turned out to be exactly what I was hoping...a romp with an old friend. There is nothing new in the gameplay but that doesn't mean the game isn't fun. There are puzzles to solve to break up the pacing - the best way for me to describe it would be...similar to Half Life 2's puzzles. If you liked HL2 then you should like DNF. I honestly believe people had their minds already made up regardless of how the game actually turned out. I have lost all respect whatsoever for both IGN and Gamespot concerning their objectivity reviewing games. Any retard can read through the reviews and see there isn't any substance to their ****

    1. Graphics (FFS graphics are NOT what makes a game FUN to play)
    2. Linear (yeah BO single player wasn't linear)
    3. "only can use 2 weapons at a time" (God forbid you had to use a little strategy on what weapons to use on the current level you are on...let's just load up a UT weapons locker with full ammo and all weapons for the strategically challenged)

It's been interesting watching all the hate pouring out from people and no substance in their arguments. (Of course if graphics and non linear and all weapons allowed are what makes a great game, then yes, their arguments have "substance")

I have yet to encounter any crashing, glitches, gotten stuck anywhere...it has played smoothly and I'm about 6 hours into it which means about halfway according to others who have completed it already.

Duke is as crass as ever...there's a bunch of new 1-liners that crack me up...plenty of potty humor, nudity etc. so if the first duke offended then this one isn't for you. I absolutely can see me playing this through at least a couple more times...but that is just a random opinion. If I honestly thought the game sucked I would provide criticism that actually made sense and based on personal experience...not input from some 8 year old emo kid who writes gaming reviews based on information a 2nd cousin gave during recess at school.

Objectively a poor game, but still fun nonetheless - especially for those who have been waiting to revel in the memories of Duke 3D. It's graphics are not up to par, and it certainly can't justify 15 years of development, but it's chauvinism and brainless fun oozes Duke-ness - and that's what we've been missing for 15 years. Not for the jaded or politically correct.

Pretty much the gameplay just takes you from one arena to another where you know the only thing to do there is blow away an enemy onslaught. That's what I wanted. About the humor, a lot of humorless reviewers clearly don't get that what makes all the sex jokes funny is that they ARE stupid. That's the whole point. It's intentional. This makes the game a lot easier for those dumb teenagers on their Xboxes and makes it a lot more boring for people who are good at games and don't throw a fit when they die. And, there is the linear level design. This is my #1 gripe with this COD rip-off. In DN3D it took me 2 days to fully get through a single level. There were secret places and Easter eggs that you had to LOOK for to find (like the Doom reference or the 2001, a Space Odyssey reference). Also the graphics were sub-standard. People whining about the old-school design should go play Serious Sam, Will Rock, or Painkiller -- these are games that do old-school the wrong way and become tedious. Duke Nukem Forever is a surprisingly rare thing these days, in that it does old-school shooting the right way. It's fast, you're always on the move...you don't have to stay trapped in an area until you kill eleventy-zillion baddies.

If I had any complaint, it would be that the solo game is too short. It's not really all that short compared to most games that come out these days, but virtually all shooters these days are far too short compared to what we used to get years ago.

Duke is about violence and explosions not solving puzzles to move on which this game seems to have a plethora of, if I wanted to play Leisure Suit Larry I would of reinstalled it. And don't even get me started on the lack of power or general use of the "weapon" The Ripper, I use the word "weapon" very lightly here as it takes up to 50 rounds to take down an enemy, the 911 is better suited for killing this this POS.

The environment is not well suited for a game that requires quick-ish movements and I found Duke getting hung up on debris that he should of easily stepped over. The game is also way to linear and the inability to backtrack to where you have been to get to spawn points for weapons is very annoying as well.

The other major pain is the amount of kick back on weapons or when you are hit by enemy fire. Don't get me wrong, its a nice feature to have as it adds some challenge to the game but shouldn't the damn aliens suffer from the same effect?

Am I also the only one that shoots the trapped women ASAP so you don't have to listen to their inane whining? I know I sure as hell did. I found all the women interaction annoying, surely they could of found better bimbo voice overs, Paris Hilton and Lyndsey Lohen sure could of used the work.

I especially love the small touches like Duke's health bar being called Ego instead. Some additions are puzzling, though, such as the modernization of the game; giving Duke regenerating health and limiting him to only 2 weapons at a time, for instance. Weapons feel rather generic and similar to one another on top of there not being very many, and some portions of the game feel rather out of place and pointless. Some of the jokes, references and one-liners fall flat whereas others are hilarious, and the one-liners do get rather repetitive towards the end. The game is also disappointingly short; I completed it in about 8 hours, and I never got stuck for any significant length of time. I enjoyed Duke 3D back in the late 90s, simply due to its Doom-esque gameplay elements with a more mature subject matter. So, of course I was excited when I initially heard Gearbox announcing they had bought the rights to the game.

Having played the game though, I have to say that it's not as strong as I was initially expecting with all the hype. Graphically, it's fairly ok, but I can see where the console gamers will be complaining, simply because it won't look as nice on the 7 year old computer that is the Xbox. On PC, it doesn't look as bad as people are talking about; while I can see older graphics, it doesn't look like a 4 year old game.

From a gameplay standpoint, the game feels empty. I was expecting twice, or even three times the amount of enemies that were in the game. The horde fights, however, were done quite well, making them a fun but difficult challenge to beat, especially on the higher difficulty settings. The platforming elements in the game definitely detracted from the gameplay; I want to beat the living **** out of aliens, not jump on gears. The one exception I do have against this, however, is when you escape from the dam. That part would almost require less shooting, considering what is happening.

On a side point, I watched a review calling this game out on the lack of originality with its weapons. The game did an excellent job of making the D3D guns more current, while adding in a few new ones. In that regard, Gearbox did quite well

While this isn't as innovating as its previous counterpart, DNF is still a solid game. Had there been more fighting, less jumping, and more reasons to have parents complain like D3D had, this would have been a better game.

Tried the demo, was desperately disappointed. It feels out of date, the movement is clunky and, while the humour is still there in spades, I feel Duke was a game of its time. It should have been left alone and we would have had fond memories.

I judge on more of a mix between, I will admit I have seen worse when it comes to game mechanics, but the 13 year development time, the graphics and aesthetics and the self righteousness of the game make it so I can't help but call it the 2nd worst game of the year, only to be beaten by Modern Warfare 3 (for similar reasons, look up my review if you really care, and if it makes you feel better I'm sure BF3 was just as bad but I won't expose myself to that much **** in one year). So, no it is not the worst on a mechanical standpoint but that doesn't mean that anyone should ever buy this game because it is still bad. Duke Nukem Forever is a nod to the heyday of 1990 gaming. Fans of the franchise should enjoy and appreciate the game for what it is, everyone else will either love it or hate it. GearBox got the game right, the problem is the game industry has changed and many people will be unwilling to accept Duke Nukem's rude, crude, misogynist attitude. In my eyes, this game is perfect.

The boss battles are all too often and are well balanced but a bit on the "cake-walk" side.

Duke even puts down a console controller within the first 10 mins of the game, as if daring the player to use a keyboard and mouse to play.

Multiplayer is no fun either - numerous crippling bugs and design flaws exist, from the unbearable lag, to the mysterious multiplayer security bugs which Gearbox refuses to disclose, along with the lack of internal security protection, leading to easy cheating. Spawn points in multiplayer maps are poorly designed and no spawn protection is afforded to players, which makes griefing rather amusing.

While Duke Nukem 3D was kept alive for a long time by a dedicated mod community and the support of 3D Realms, having released the Build editor, there have only been cookie-cutter community-placating responses from Gearbox on the release of a DNF editor, but no actual evidence of one which is forthcoming. This, along with their eagerness in removing the in-game console (to prevent multiplayer bugs - *face-through-desk*) does not bode well for this game being fixed/redone correctly and kept alive by the community's talented mapmakers, artists, modders and programmers.

third problem: stupid errors and confusion. here's an example. [/spoiler] fourth problem: vehicles and mini games! the controls are ATROCIOUS! they're a crime against humanity!
fifth and last problem: difficulty. i have nothing against hard games. duke3d was pretty hard too, but it was 1996! in 2011, people doesn't play hard games anymore! they give up after some tries.

the only redeeming factor for this game is that it's duke nukem, the jokes still make you lol. they're a bit dated, but they're still funny.

Duke Nukem's iconic macho humor is as strong as ever, with all it's hidden ego items, which rewards players for spending time dicking around and finding ways to pat themselves on the back (though less so later in the game). This rewards players by increasing the size of Duke's ego, which is apparently powerful enough to stop bullets (but getting shot still makes him feel bad). The levels have some wonderfully novel and creative design. It's a breath of fresh air against all the modern shooters of nonstop shooting to find puzzles intermittently placed between shootouts, and allows for a stronger narrative characterizing Duke. The best joke of all is that after 15 years in development the game still feels rushed, and shooting simply isn't fun. Of all the fantastic weapons in Duke's arsenal, he's only allowed to carry two at a time, and not anywhere near enough ammo. For a game about kicking ass and chewing bubblegum, Duke spends way too much time looking at the ground trying to find the right tool for the job. Mid fight duke can refill his ego by humiliating and executing aliens, which is an entertaining idea, except Duke's default and constant ego regeneration is so fast, that such maneuvers are hardly worth doing. The regeneration also heavily encourages players to just turtle up behind cover and hide whenever they get hurt, which is very uncharacteristic of Duke Nukem, and sometimes results in long drawn out standoffs without the specific gun Duke is supposed to use (which can often be found nearby without any in world explanation). On harder difficulties all these problems are made worse, as duke has to spend more time hiding to recover ego, and it's more important that you have the specific gun the developer wanted you to use for that part.

Duke Nukem could of been an exciting blast from the past, but instead a halfassed attempt to "modernize" it ruins the game and makes it play like a cheap, and clunky Call of Duty clone.

Of course that is no match to CoD series or Bulletstorm, even first Duke is better, but still this is solid FPS with big doze of specific temper. Duke Nukem Forever is technically average, the story is rather simple and the game play is based on bad jokes. You canâ

Hey, as this being my first review ever, I'm gonna say this, Duke Nukem Forever deserves alot higher meta-score then it has. Its layed back sense of humor and hilariousness is just what i needed lately, Im tired of these over serious games like Call of Duty Black Ops or Halo Reach. There are a few things that still could have made Duke Nukem Forever a slightly better game, such as more customized game types in the multiplayer, but even without these options, its still a great game. As far as graphics, this game is about average. It does not blow my mind, but its not as bad as many of the other reviews say it is. There are many things you can unlock for the multi-player, by ranking up against other players. The story line was Good, not outstanding but not terrible. Id recommend this game to anybody. However, kids should not play this game, It has allot of nudity, and very crude language. last thing i want is a bunch of little kids saying "I'm gonna rip off your head and S##T down your neck. This is a mature rated game for a reason. Do not buy this kid for your child, unless you feel they are old enough for adult humor. I belive parents need to watch what their kids play now more then ever. Expand

Man why does everyone seem to think a game has to have PHOTO REALISTIC GRAPHICS and REALISTIC GAMEPLAY
go the f*** back to duke nukem on the PS1, hell even play duke 3D!!!! go through it, come back then write a review based on the game and NOT A GOD DAMN COMPARISON!!!! a review should NOT BE A COMPARISON TO "MODERN SHOOTERS" aka the norm!!! This game is following what 'was' the norm back

Duke Nukem Forever would be quite decent if one felt entirely certain it's intended purely as a self-parody. As is, it doesn't do the expectations, the buyer or the Duke justice – oh, had he rather remained a vaporware legend!

Petty, nasty and anachronistic. Duke is only relevant as a warning from the past. Avoid these mistakes, developers. [Aug 2011, p.76]

Bottom line: Duke Nukem Forever was not worth the 15-year wait, nor is it worth paying the full $50. However, I cannot deny that I thought it was both fun and funny, which at the end of the day is what this franchise is all about.
