There are so many of these 90s-inspired shooters that anyone who is a fan is having a field day with all the options available. Dread Templar becomes another solid entry in this subgenre. It offers a nice mixture of retro gameplay along with some more modern ideas with its skill tree and weapon modification concept. Dread Templar is a fast, fun, twitchy shooter that enjoys promoting the old through great-level design, hectic gameplay, pixellated visuals, and its groovy metal soundtrack. Dread Templar is a competent first-person shooter offering made for a certain audience, and I think the developer is happy with delivering a good retro-feeling shooter for those people to add to their video game collection.

Escaping the deep hell of early access Dread Templar manages to offer you a nostalgic and old-school gameplay style, which is more than enough to set it apart from other shooters in the market.

I liked my time with Dread Templar, especially when the game took off and began to offer a challenge on par with the best exponents of the young retro FPS subgenre. On the other hand, I think it needed a bit of work to really stand out, perhaps by handling the upgrade system or the boss battles in a different way. In any case, Dread Templar is a good game that understands the classic fundamentals of the genre and contains adrenaline-pumping moments in polished and emotional combat.

Dread Templar is an outrageously fun retro FPS. It's straightforward, simple, thrilling, action-packed, and exciting, and is the perfect sort of game for anyone who is solely looking for an old-school Doom-like title.

Despite a great core loop and a few nice-feeling weapons, Dread Templar gets monotonous in a few hours and then it goes on for another ten. I'm quite sure hardcore fans of boomer shooters will love Dread Templar though.

As far as difficulty is concerned, everything here feels quite balanced. It rarely happens that the death of a player is "unfair". All in all, Dread Templar plays well, but aside from throwing katanas, it doesn't show off anything too new. [Issue#325]

Dread Templar is a fast paced FPS that seems like an exhilarating experience at first, but due to balance issues it doesn’t really feel all that good to play. The enemy’s heavy shots come at you from far away, while the player’s attacks don’t deal a lot of damage, which causes frustration. It can feel good to take down an enemy by throwing a katana sword or using a bow and arrows, but altogether this game is more exhausting than fun.

Inspired by Quake and other classics but devoid of any distinctive qualities that would help it stand out among other boomer shooters, Dread Templar is pretty fun but ultimately forgettable.

A fast, dynamic shooter in the vein of 90s genre classics. But it’s not the first nostalgic trip to the past - and it doesn't offer many distinguishing qualities. A solid boomer shooter of which there are tons.

Competent is definitely not the worst descriptor a game can attain, but I’d be happier if Dread Templar had found a way to truly distinguish itself. When I find myself with that retro-shooter itch, I can’t see myself coming back to this one. It takes more than good gunplay to make an experience memorable, but there isn’t much more to Dread Templar than that.

Level design is not as good as "dusk". But still not bad. Episode 1-2-3 is good but the bosses of 4 and 5 are too easy. Various weapons and upgrades have added color to the game. And combat with fast gameplay is not bad. I recommend Full Review »
