    Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is an incredible reimagining of the original two games that keeps the core of what they were in the limelight. You have a stunning world redone and put together with the utmost care and respect for the fans. It's the perfect way to hop into the series if you have missed these games the first time around or have been on the fence about giving them a shot. They maintain their challenging nature from the original release, with a nice amount of quality-of-life changes that seem minor, but add to the experience, bringing them to another level, feeling more like a modern release due to these changes. From the first game, forcing you to be the lone hero, taking on the role to protect the land he holds dear. To the second game, where your party looks to take on the role of their ancestors and protect their people from the threats terrorizing the populace. These are incredible games, filled with character, charm and challenging gameplay, and they're absolutely worth playing in this new and enhanced release.

    While the Dragon Quest 1 remake on offer here is a great reimagining of the revolutionary but somewhat limited progenitor of this massive series, I cannot sufficiently express how much of an improvement the Dragon Quest 2 remake is. For the first time, it feels like a worthy and critical entry in the arc of the series and not just a steppingstone technologically between 1 and 3. Dragon Quest I & II: HD-2D Remake is an absolute must play for anyone who loves this series or the genre of RPG’s as a whole.

    Square Enix has honored its intention to make the new release order work in a narrative sense. Dragon Quest III served as the original climax of the trilogy, with an exciting conclusion that tied the three games together. It’s now Dragon Quest II‘s job to see the trilogy’s story off, and things have been reworked to make it the grand conclusion it needs to be. Some of the original identity of the game is lost in that process, but I think it makes sense for this project. In a lot of ways, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is an ideal outcome for a remake. The original games are still out there, but this release offers such different takes on both that it’s more than worthy to stand alongside them.

By enhancing combat with new mechanics and abilities, expanding the narrative with dialogues and arcs that strengthen the emotional bonds with the heroes, and making world exploration even more rewarding, Square Enix managed to modernize the core experience without abandoning the charming essence and simplicity that made them great classics of the genre.

    Let’s just say we didn’t set out with high hopes after the somewhat lackluster experience of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. However, in a welcome burst of clarity, Square Enix has this time taken the task of remaking the game seriously, paying due tribute to the original content while also enriching it with a wealth of new features that make the experience both enjoyable and surprising for newcomers and veterans alike. As it stands, this attempt proves far more satisfying than last year’s predecessor and can easily be recommended to any budding archaeologist eager to explore the origins of a genre and a legendary franchise, without suffering the main pitfalls of the era.

    Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is a respectful return to two foundational RPGs that still have value today, even if they don't age so gracefully in every area. The visual overhaul is excellent, the story additions work far better than expected, and the world feels more alive than it ever has. However, the shallow, slow, and repetitive combat, frequent encounters, and grind-heavy pacing hold it back from being as inviting as it could be for new players. Longtime fans will appreciate how faithfully these classics have been recreated, but anyone looking for a modernized experience may find that Dragon Quest 2 carries most of the weight while Dragon Quest 1 struggles to justify itself beyond nostalgia.
