    I was happy back in the day HoN got launched because of the features. With DotA 2 it's possible to play the original with these features and more. Still the deepest and most complex game of the genre, whatever the name should be.
    If you like to get punished for stupid mistakes and get your deserved reward for great play, then you are right.

    Game is very friendly for players who havent played before MOBAS, there is long training before you can go and play against other players (For me it took like 40mins, after that you can continue or skip straight to play with other players)

    Anyway, since its more new player friendly there is problems. First of all, Ive been playing alot MOBAS and im pretty good in those. Problem is that game is pretty full of casual gamers, who actually dont use brains even people who haves like 500+ wins, may be pretty bad players.

    Lets talk now little bit about good things. In dota 2 waiting lines are not big and also you can choose region near your country there is alot options.

    You can also buy new items to your heroes to make it look more unique, you can use items from different sets. In League of legends and Heroes of newerth you can buy "skins" and you cannot took gloves from skin X and boots from skin Y.

    You are also able to buy several different ancouncer voices, ward skins, HUD skins and couriers.

    Next lets move to settings. There is not much resolution options, but you can modify pretty extensively other settings. I hope valve is going to make more resolution optison in future.

    Gameplay in dota 2 is pretty intensive and few heroes are able to use terrain very advantageous, which is cool. Most of heroes are aldready known from original dota version.

    Last but not least, I want to talk about gaming community. First of all you are able to make teams and play with your friends. You can also make guilds, which havent that big role in dota 2. There is alot people in dota 2, who dont communicate in game and that is such a shame mostly it leads to lose. Of course there is people who communicate aswell, but I have had always bad luck with teams...

    I prefer this game for people who look more "hardcore" way to play MOBAS and for those, who are bored to LoL, HoN etc.    … Expand

    This game is amazing. They patch it often enough (though some would say that missing a seasonal holiday patch dead game). Endless gameplay possibilities and awesome art, best MOBA I've ever played.

    Despite all the anger from the 12 year olds mad about not getting a halloween event, DOTA 2 is a well programmed game with very good mechanics. While it is true valve does not communicate with us they still give some nice patches. The community isn't as bad as it seems. People say please and thank you at least unlike in LoL.

    Valve and Icefrog made a good game.They did a great job bringing the game to the ideal. Community you are unhappy with one of the opening event go play in other games.

    Probably the deepest and most meaningful pvp experience you can have in an online game. From Hero choices, to lanes and item selections, this game has the possibilities of chess wrapped around a ridiculously skilled rts game.

    I love DOTA 2. Love it. A lot of people have dropped the user review score, because they are petulant children who did not get the temporary Halloween event they expected, so that would be my only complaint the user community can be immature. But, that is not a reflection on the game itself, which is engrossing, engaging, and frankly the best MOBA game out there. It is truly F2P, unlikeI love DOTA 2. Love it.     If you have ever played WC3 DotA on which this game is based, it has improved a lot and constantly evolving. Not only is it free to play, but also the purchasable content is strictly cosmetic.     Nice game, but crappy community, the only bad thing i see about the game, is the matchmaking, it has to be improved ASAP, i love the game but joining pubs alone is a bad experience.

    A king in their nerdy genre like D&D with the same standard problem-> u need friends to play.
    O nobody of them (if you have any lol) play this.
    Solution-> be polite sharpen your skills be a good player and ask other people you played with (that you consider good in any meaning of the term) to play again with you.

    Seriously awesome game, even though it's a bit addictive, so watch out for that.
    - Not ONE gameplay aspect requires payment.
    On a sidenote though, this game is more about competition than it is about "fun", and while playing it you may find yourself on a toxic environment, this being especially true for new players.

VALVe somehow got DotaAllStars head developer, IceFrog, to work for them, and then manged some brilliant legal maneuvers to land the Dota trademark (being unable to secure the full "Defense of the Ancients" title). Then to take that, plus a team of VALVe employees and re-create a completelyReally, if you think about it, Dota2 is one of the most unexpected things to come along in gaming. It's unexpected in the first place, and then unexpectedly good top of that. There are a hundred ways this could have gone so wrong for VALVe, but the fact that they feel it is enough of a success to put it out there at the cost of ZERO DOLLARS. Talk about unexpected.

    Sure the competitors are also free, but the competitors are "babby's first moba" and "Costly McCostHuge."

    All the heroes are unlocked for you to play with, FROM THE MOMENT YOU DOWNLOAD. This is huge to a Moba, I believe. It's worth a download, play the tutorial, a couple bot matches and see if you don't find at least ONE hero that doesn't click with you somehow.

    All the negative reviews are LoL fanboys.

    ok, I am 17 and move from game to game for about 3-5 years spending sad amounts of time on each franchise for example CoD, Battlefield, Halo, Minecraft and hundreds of games inbetween, this is important because I have tried lots of A*** games and This is genually the best because of:

    B)The sheer enjoyment you get from playing the game, including getting kills, getting items and learning in general.

    C) Valve, I think this game is amazing because of valve, they constantly update it, balance the heroes, patch any glitch within literally minutes unlike Infinity ward, cough 6 month.

    GET THIS GAME, PLAY THE OUT OF IT, and dont feed,

    I'm from Ukraine, and I do not care whether or not Diretide, I thing in this game is a team game, and because of the lack of Diretide, I'm not going to put this game a bad score. But, I will say only one thing, Valve, do not forget about the players, and they will not forget about you.

Please be a little more reasonable who cares about Halloween. Everyone complained about it last year so get over it. This is one of the best games out right now and people are being childish.

    This's the best multiplayer game that i've ever seen. The balance of the heroes is great, maybe someone can think that some heroes (like Riki) are OP, but that's not, they think that because they doesn't know how to counter them (how can you fight against an invisible hero without wards or dust?).
    The matchmaking could be better, but it's still great, i was in team with a friend yesterday    This's the best multiplayer game that i've ever seen.     deep and addictive game. been hooked since dota 1 came out on wc3. 3000 hours on dota 2 and i'm still learning stuff. community is great after you get out of low mmr. also diretide is a crappy game mode.

I have probably spent more money on this game, even though it is free to play and you get no advantage by paying, than I have for any other game that I have ever played, even ones that cost $60 to get at the get go.     Game's visuals are great, gameplay is balanced and stable, strategies are virtually endless and there are always new tricks and tactics to play with or against. With occasional releases of new heroes and rare appearances of new in-game items, the gameplay remains    Best MOBA by far. There are still some rough edges and bugs, but still a lot better and balanced gameplay than LoL or HoN.
    Game's visuals are great, gameplay is balanced and stable, strategies are virtually endless and there are always new tricks and tactics to play with or against. With occasional releases of new heroes and rare appearances of new in-game items, the gameplay remains interesting. The servers are also good and multiple servers are available, with new servers constantly being added, to cover the entire globe with good pings.
    The game is also officially available on LAN which makes it especially interesting for players who cannot benefit the most from online servers (you don't get any Dota2 player experience or cosmetic item drops if you play on LAN).
    The game is free to play, besides for purely cosmetic items which do not affect the gameplay in any way. Dota2 is not a pay-to-win style game.
    Besides Windows, it runs on Linux (Ubuntu) as well. This means that you have to pay NOTHING besides the hardware and bandwidth costs to play this game. That's definitely next level of free-to-play in the gaming industry.
    The cosmetic items are regulated very well for quality control and players can get random cosmetic item drops at the end of matches or each Dota2 level upgrade (which is different from in-game hero level upgrade)
    DotaTV, or the spectator mode, is great. It allows viewing the game from player perspective, event based automated camera, free camera or any caster's camera. DotaTV also supports in game casting with full audio commentary. The tournaments get great coverage and casters are good too. AND you get additional cosmetic item drop chance while spectating a tournament game (which have rather high community market value)
    All in all, a great game. Definitely a 10/10 in MOBA and also in free to play games.    … Expand

    Well, I love Dota 2, But a lot of idiots have started to rate this with 0 an 1 just because they were not given an event. I think that's not fair for an incredible game they were loving 2 moths ago. Play this game, don't fear the community I think it's the best ;MOBa nowadays

Ignore the Diretide spammers, it was funny at first but has gone way too far, i mean dragging the user score this far down because of one event?     The game is free to play in the most free way possible. You have access to the entire content. The only things buyable are cosmetics.     It is an excellent remake of the original mod D.O.T.A. or Defense of the Ancients, it adds a lot of the old aspects with new ones to make the game play more fair and easier to play for some.

    Although a game that takes a while to understand the mechanics, the way how things are done, and your objective, once you know how to do it, it is probably the most fun game that you will ever play.
    Though if you don't have a tough skin to not receive flame, it will probably not be the game for you.

    All the frustrated lol trolls decided to show up on metacritic. No server lag here since I have been playing it, cosmetics are nice but wish there was more to purchase than hero sets,courier skins and hud skins.The only complaint I have is the the dota loading emblem, on start up it tends to pixelate very harshly.

    Brilliant game, never played a game more well rounded and enjoyable. Would not have written the review though if it weren't for all these negative reviews given by angry fans of the game. Do not be mislead, each of these bad reviews is simply a troll.

    Great game, I don't feel Valve is ignoring their community. They use subtile hints a lot but the kids in the community won't get it. It feels more like brats who have been given everything but still rage because now they want a pony too.

    Well, not a Dota fan, but it's a good game, and since all these trolls seems to just give 0 to drop down the score so they can compensate they lack of Halloween events (yes, that’s the reason) so it seems fair that I give the game some help to bring its score up.     A great game, I have been playing for 7 months now and I'm still not bored of it, A little disappointed that there was no seasonal event this year but that can be excused, I will continue to play this game and I don't think it will get boring any time soon.     Very good game. The only F2P game worth spending money on. One of the best out there. Only problem is some poor matchmaking, and Valve's inability to tell us 'No Diretide' (Yes, this has nothing to do with the game it self, however still represents DotA as a whole).

    In all seriousness, Dota 2 is a highly addictive real time strategy game. It looks beautiful and is very rewarding. Hard to learn, hard to master. I definitely recommend it to anyone.

    DOTA is probably the best representative of the genre MOBA. People who previously played LoL may have problems with the mechanics of the game. Valve game is harder than the competition of Riot Games does not mean it is bad. The visuals look very high level, and the sound is also not bad.     I keep coming back to this game no matter what other games come out. Basically once I'm done with any other game this is my default time sink. Sure people are annoying sometimes, but that's what the mute button is for... and I prefer using it to debating some teenager. The community may be bad but, it's the part/tradition that's been observed since Dota 1. The nature of the game is competitive and this is why there are players out there flaming others.

    A good and well-rounded RTS game.

    Dota 2 have all you need from a free to play for 1000 hours of fun. How many game can entertain you for thousands of hours with only 1 map? I choosed 9 instead of 10 point because there is no real control for bad players and the matchmaking is very slow.

    Considero que es un excelente juego, más allá de su origen: Dota mod de W3. Dota 2 ofrece excelentes gráficas y una interfaz bastante amigable y muy personalizable. Además Dota 1 necesita tener la máxima puntuación por todo lo que es y generó posteriormente, y creo que Dota 2 es quien hereda esta innovación.

Details like that could cost me days talking about! If the only thing they haven't restored, it's got to be the hero models, which are actually impossible to restore because of the copy rights.

    DotA's mechanism, no offence, is very complex to every single new player, and is very hard to master. It doesn't matter how clever you are, but you are certainly almost 100% gonna play like a fool in the first few games. My suggestion is that you play the tutorial, which is the easiest way to learn the game fast. The matchmaking system means you are not likely to be playing against someone who has won 100 times in the first few games in your life (although they could be someone who has already mastered DotA1), so do not take it too seriously. The system allows you to ban all the massages from other players, and if there is someone offending you, he could always be reported. I admit that the community is a bit like chaos right now, because of the sudden increment of players. New players only searching for fun won't be adoring this game even after months, because DotA is no fun if you don't know the rules and tricks. I say those because there are certain large amount of players who know nothing about the game itself, but only cursing and offending other players. Why do I value this community? Because DotA is a community-based game. Every game is 5v5, so that people will hear each other, and know each other. It's not like Battlefield 3 in which there are 32 people in a team and you have no idea who is the rookie. If the DotA community sucks, then the gaming experience sucks, then everything sucks. It is just this simple.

    Like every other game. DotA is not for everyone. Its most reasonable price means it could be played by everyone, but it's just a game and have its own fan base. If you don't like it, you can delete the game and play what you like for losing absolutely nothing. But if you liked it, I guarantee this is still the best choice for you.    … Expand

If the people Im partied up with are going to do good based on their character choices, lanes, etc. This game, this game just has everything for parties of 5 or less.

    However this game has one downfall (Actually more, but one major one). The skill cap is ludicrously high. This makes it hard to get people into the game, as they have to spend literally hundreds of hours learning to just be "less than average at best". This makes it hard to get friends to join in on the fun, however, if they do, and they stick to it, it is quite possibly one of the most rewarding games out there period.

    This is a great game! My only problem with it would be the community it has. It has a horrible community full of people who think they are better than everyone else, and constantly yell at you for messing up once. I play with friends though, so this really isn't a problem for me. Even if I'm in a game with teammates, I just ignore them and enjoy the game!

    Now the reason why I started LOVING this game is because I didn't give up like so many others. In order to truly appreciate Dota, go find people, your friends if you have any, and start your training in a party. If you don't want trolls then just avoid them on your friend's list. If you want to LEARN and still play in a fixed champion camera (which I don't recommend), then you can still do so.

    Trust me when I say, LoL limits your ability to learn as a gamer. You can't freely choose your champion, so that's a downer. You can't play in a party if you’re like level 5 and the other person is level 30 (Trust me; you can't do nothing to the opponent except harass). Also, I see this in many LoL gamers, once you get too comfortable with a character and decide to stick to it, you start to forget what makes a game both difficult and rewarding. That is why Dota is so deep and immerse. You have to learn to adapt quickly and pay attention to your surroundings because dying hurts...like a lot (you lose money. MAN I NEEDED THAT!). You have to constantly change your character based on the situation, and since they didn't put in the surrender option, the game literally tells you to NEVER GIVE UP and FIGHT!    … Expand

    I have been playing Moba since dota 1. I loved dota 1 and was very competitive for about 5 years of it. I then switched to LoL when dota 1 was just too out of date. LoL was fun for a long time (4 years). As soon as I got my dota 2 beta key I stopped playing LoL and never look back.

    I love the efforts valve put into the characters, from looks, to cosmetics, to voices. The characters talk    I have been playing Moba since dota 1.     I have over 1300 hours played and have not spent a dime on the game. I did make money off of it though by selling my acquired items via the steam marketplace. The items are too expensive for me to justify actually buying.

    For all the people who complain about the community almost every gaming community is bad. Dota 1 was bad, LoL was bad, WoW was bad, the internet is BAD. People suck, now learn to deal with people who are ignorant instead of taking offense to it.    … Expand

    Don't mind me just doing my best to try and counteract these negative reviews. Although the silence from Valve was awful I still think that Dota is a great game.

    And this dichotomy is perhaps the best descriptor I can attach to Dota 2. It is frequently a game which occupies two opposite spaces simultaneously. It is the best game. It is also the worst game. No game has ever made me as miserable as Dota 2 has. But no game has made me feel so consistently rewarded for my time, and as consistently, wonderfully connected to the friends I play it with.
