For kids saying COD/BF3/Any think else is better, don´t forget that this is where those games came from!
If I mean game, guys from ID software did great job about Doom, every think worked, so the put that into Doom II and make it bigger and better!

Oh wow, the memories. This game has become the most successful and widely-modded classic first person shooter ever as far as I can tell, and being in the Zandronum community myself I can say that this game will forever be in the history books of technology. Outstanding for its time, still great fun now, very flexible and fun to work with. a+

Doom is (in my own personal opinion) the best first person shooter, or any sort of first person game involving combat, ever made. I played it on SNES, but I couldn't find this release on the list. The first FPS I ever played, similar to the first one of the series, but with some improvements, new features and a bigger campaign. I was at the beginning of my teenage years, and would spend hours lost on its labyrinths. Was an incredible experience at the time.

If alot of people play this game nearly 15 years after it was released, you can probably already tell, that Doom 2 will not disappoint. Sure, the graphics are old, and decrepit, but the level of action, and replayability, and... what's that? Online multiplayer? If all that makes for a good game which is 15 years old, then you must go out, and buy it.

DOOM II is in many ways an improvement from DOOM but in other ways inferior. The things that DII does right: many new enemy types from the slightly annoying revenants to the terrifying arch-vile. one new weapon, the Super-shotgun. Although a nice addition, I always wished that Id made more weapons like a grenade launcher to fire around corners or something.
The biggest "improvement" is the new levels. A total of 32 new maps to traverse. That's a LOT. Now notice I put improvement in quotes, because that is the flaw of DII: the level disign. It feels like the developers didn't know how they were gonna fill 32 slots, so made up the levels as they went along. Now don't get me wrong, there are some great levels, but alot of them are quite forgetful.
The music is as always great and the sound effects are perfectly cheesy. This IS a fantastic game, but It's just not as COSISTANT as Ultimate DOOM. the bigger you make a game, the more thin the game gets. In UD every level is identifiable at least to me. I'm not getting the same feeling from DII.
But for the sake of argument, I say both UD & DII are equal. If you like DOOM, play it and love it. if you like FPS in general, play this only if you like DOOM.

I got this game back in mid 90's when my mom took me to K-mart and I saw Doom 95 on the shelf. I took this home, installed it, and forever have been a Doom fan!

There was no improvement on the original gameplay except for a new weapon and a few enemies, but the map designs were better in my opinion. The maps were much bigger and more immersive and ran great in 90s PC standards.

Sounds was, and are still great. Gameplay is the best aspect of the doom series, killing is based on skill and finesse, rather than just reaction game just like todays games, because most of the enemies does not have hitscan weapons(weapons that hits instantly), so when they shoot their fireballs/slimeballs or what ever, you can dodge them even if several of them shoots you at the same time just if you are skilled enough. This what makes combat very fun even after so many years. There is also some hitscan weapon enemies, but they are really easy to drop and basically you can drop them with one shotgun blast, exept one boss enemy. Enemies also can fight each other if they hit other creature that is not same creature type that accidently shooted it. Also there is pain stat for each enemy, so certain enemies are better killed by chainguns and some other with shotguns and rocket launcher, etc. From internet there is plenty of custom made wads to doom 2. When you play an old Doom game, you don't just play a classic game, you get a portal of what the gaming world was really like back in the early 90's. Where the graphics didn't matter, if the gameplay was good enough, the game itself was good enough. I don't know any game community that's older than Doom's people still make mods for the game. Perhaps it's just the nostalgia talking, but Doom is just a franchise that can most likely never ever spoil. The classic versions at least. Whether you were around to experience the first Super Mario game ever made, or you became a gamer just 2 years ago, Doom 2 is still good stuff. Nowadays, it might seem super cliche to have a game with demons, miniguns and chainsaws, but after 19 years, the game still tightly holds onto its charm. As expected, I prefer Doom 2 over the first Doom, just because you get the same classic feel, but some nice new extras thrown in that don't overspoil the game. Expand

I, however, side with the unpopular opinion that the original game is better than its sequel. With some exceptions, levels in the first game were all carefully designed. Enemy placement and the pacing were excellent. Playing Doom II, right after the Doom, I was not impressed by the level design as much as I was about the first game. I understand how Doom felt more claustrophobic and some might prefer the more open space feeling in Doom II. I did not appreciate the enemy placement and level design in Doom II that much which felt lazy rather than the result of careful planning. All in all, Doom II is still a great game. But the original Doom was the one that nailed it.

Doom 2 is just a perfect game.Guns, sound , level design, monsters. The only downside is lack of any major improvements to doom 1 formula. Graphics can be a problem for some players. But the thing that is the most important is gameplay.

As a fan of old-school games Doom II is on my Top 3 list. First part of Doom wasn't as good as this sequel. Everything in Doom II is better than in Doom. Better weapons, better monsters, labyrinths, bosses. For those who haven't payed it yet i just could say, DO TI! It's a big part of the history of video games.

Doom II isn't easy to define. It is a sequel but, thinking about it, is quite identical to what was the experience of the masterpiece - Doom; maybe Doom II is a "more of the same"... but with some additions which are really fantastic.

Well, the plot of Doom II, picks up right where the first one ended: the doom-guy returns to Earth, only to realize that hell has arrived there, and thus prepares to stop the invasion at his own home once and for all. The story is told through screen text, very pleasant to read, even exciting at times, and I must say that compared to the first chapter, I noticed a slightly better maturity in the telling of the story. Not bad.

As for the gameplay, Doom II meets the perfect mix of "run-and-gun", exploration and skull-key search, violence and enemies in large quantities. There are some new things: the double-barreled shotgun, or "super shotgun", for someone it is a simple and powerful weapon, but in truth it is almost an innovation, in the view of 90s FPS. The super shotgun is simply satisfying, is pure pleasure, gives the feeling of having the force of nature in your hands and inflicts hellish damage. A real plus point. The level of game design is very evolved compared to the first Doom, and the areas in which to move are more complex and more refined. From the point of view of enemies there are some really appreciated new demons, as the Revenant, Hell Knight, Mancubus and Arachnotron... while I personally hated others, as the Pain elemental (very, very annoying), Heavy weapon dude and Arch-vile. Speaking about demons, I noticed in Doom II a quite disproportionate amount of enemies: I finished the game at "Ultra-Violence", and sometimes I could not really believe to the number of enemies that I saw on the screen, making the game too frustrating. Maybe it's my fault, but I don't like the "more enemies = more difficult" philosophy in videogames, and I think it is trivial and a bit stupid. Also with lower difficulty, "Hurt me plenty", boss like Cyberdemon becomes a constant enemy in almost every level, canceling his status as "boss". Nonsense, simply. The challenge with the final boss, Icon of Sin, on the other hand, I really liked it and I found it satisfactory. In essence, however, Doom II is a game much less balanced than the first Doom, and for those who have appreciated the perfect balance of the first chapter, this lack in Doom II is a defect.

From a technical point of view, Doom II is really a "more of the same", as the graphics and the Doom engine are virtually identical to those of the previous chapter, released one year earlier. Not a problem, in fact, it always represents the technological wonder that John Carmack has managed to create in the 90s. The soundtrack instead seemed much newer but still classic and true to Doom, and I liked tracks as "Countdown to Death" and "Running from Evil"; good work by Bobby Prince.

Doom II is a masterpiece, this is out of the question. It has many things that add value to the gameplay and is more refined in level design, however, it has a problem of balance which makes the game challenging but at the same time frustrating. A problem that the first, legendary, Doom had not.

But, especially, Doom II was not the revolution that Doom was. And this is not an opinion.

Doom 2 goes the same way as the first Doom: Good level design (I highlight "Gotcha" for example), good music, etc. Although personally, I don't like it more than the first Doom because it feels like an expansion in part ... The only thing it does to improve the gameplay is add a few monsters and a single new weapon, along with the level design and the music that although I like it, itDoom 2 goes the same way as the first Doom: Good level design (I highlight "Gotcha" for example), good music, etc. Although personally, I don't like it more than the first Doom because it feels like an expansion in part ... The only thing it does to improve the gameplay is add a few monsters and a single new weapon, along with the level design and the music that although I like it, it doesn't convince me compared to the first Doom. And as for the graphics, although it is the same, the maps are larger, which is appreciated.
Something that if I feel that it has worsened a lot is the multiplayer mode, and that is that the inclusion of the super shotgun makes the games become more reflexive, "let's see who draws the weapon first", than aim. And if you get to die on a small map in a 1 vs 1, it may be that you are already lost, since the other will keep killing you constantly with the super shotgun and you will not be able to regain the lead, considering that there is no respawn time. At least in Doom 1 the maps with the items were better dispersed and the weapons were not as broken (although the super shotgun in the campaign is fun to use and is more balanced). They must have made a change, for example, he did Half Life 1 with some weapons like the crossbow, forcing you to be aiming only to shoot the arrow that kills one, which makes you have a disadvantage at short range. Also the glitches that occurred since the graphics engine is in 2d in the first Doom (I already mentioned it in your review as well), here they are even more noticeable due to the larger size of maps, I highlight the one of locking and receiving damage from the nothing, because an enemy blocks you from above or below.
Anyway, Doom 2 is an entertaining game that doesn't have much to envy the first one, but with the balancing problems that I already mentioned, without much interest in level design and lack of innovation in general. A game recommended for all lovers of the first installment, although it left me a little bit to be desired.

It was the first ever FPS game, first ever action game and first ever horror/demonic game I ever played, so I may be quite biased towards this game. Yeah, maybe games like Call of Duty and all are "better" than these games. But had it not been for Doom, none of such games would've existed at all. So, you may not like it, but you can never deny it's legacy.

There are new monsters, a very cool Super Shotgun (which is my favorite gun in an FPS game, together with the BFG) and some improvements in gameplay experience. I personally liked the continuous gameplay rather than the episodic approach of the original. The levels look better in terms of design and some levels (Map 13: Downtown in particular) do become a great experience after playing a number of times, even if they are too tedious in the beginning. Also, it has less number of mazes compared to the original Doom. Since I hate mazes, I take that as an improvement. Arch-Viles are perhaps my favorite enemy in classic Doom, which first appears in this game. Some levels require a well-planned strategy to get through it properly. Not really the primary element of the game, but it's also a strategic game sometimes. The strategic part of the game is often overlooked. One major issue people bring up is the lack of storyline. Yes, it doesn't have a s*itlodas of cutscenes and scrolling and reading. And considering it to be one of the earliest games of its kind, it might have been horrible to look at the cutscenes in retrospect. So, it puts gameplay above the storytelling but it doesn't mean that the game has no storyline at all. It has very minimal storylines and setups and buildups. The minimality adds to the charm of the game. Even though they're in minimal amount, they're sufficient for the players to make some sense out of the gameplay experience they get. That's some weird brilliance. The continuous gameplay makes things a little easier than compared to Doom/Ultimate Doom - especially Episode 4 of Ultimate Doom (Thy Flesh Consumed). But, playing each level from a pistol start will make some of the levels ten times more difficult.

My favorite levels - Entryway (1), Dead Simple (7), Tricks and Traps (8), 'O' of Destruction (11), Inmost Dens (14), Suburbs (16), Tenements (17), The Courtyard (18), The Citadel (19), Barrels o' Fun (23), Bloodfalls (25), Monster Condo (27), The Spirit World (28), The Living End (29). These are my favorite levels out of any classic Doom games and the millions of other wads created by the people who loved and played these classics.

My least favorite levels - The Pit (9), Refueling Base (10), The Chasm (24). Not at all the worst levels out there in the original ones or the customized versions. But, it's either their gimmick and the lack of ammo which made me like these levels less.

    Score : absolute 10/10
    Grade : golden A+

Developers accept more their sadistic side as they dare to set the worst traps ever. If you like difficulty, well, you will be served here: some rooms and events are impossible to cross without losing some armour and/or life points. Welcome in hell. The DLC is terrific too: it even adds as much game time than the original adventure. Weapons are very cool and contribute to make DOOM a bit more of a strategic game (via the management of your cartridges). They also are a bit more detailed here. About as good as the first one. Don't forget to download some mods when you are done with the main game!

One of the classic legends where all my gaming started. Yes it's badly outdated ,and probably not appealing for younger generations. But true gamers even if younger can appreciate this jewel lost in time.

An absolute classic with iconic weapons and enemies. In my opinion, the only downside to the base game is some of its terrible maps although the expansions compensate with some of the most fun and challenging maps in the entire franchise. Doom 2 is in my opinion the most perfect Doom game of the 90s. Gameplay is addictive, sound efffects are great, It replaced the episodic style of missions into a single row of missions and the final Boss was much better compared to the first one. My only problem is that it doesnt have a good story to combine everything together (i understand its a 90s FPS gaame but a good story isDoom 2 is in my opinion the most perfect Doom game of the 90s. The maps are maze like. Ammo is insufficient. The weapons are horribly unbalanced. the player's own weapons can easily kill the player. the maps are too claustrophobic with little room for the player to use skilled positioning.

Игра почти точь-в-точь такая же, как и предыдущая часть. В наше время такую игру очень трудно воспринимать нормально.

I don't like those 90's doom but I'm giving it a 10 for the incredible work of the mods (DOOM BRUTALIDADE v20) it was "as violent as doom 2016"

Klasyk v2

A thrilling sequel that improves on its predecessor with more intense action, diverse enemies, and innovative level design. A classic.

  1. A dark, disturbing game. And while it may not bring anything new to the genre, it can create obsession-level loyalty if you tend not to look beyond the barrel of a gun.
  2. In addition to multiple difficulty settings and configurable graphics and controls, DOOM II features online support. You can challenge opponents via modem, LAN or a supported IPX protocol to a brutal, no holds barred deathmatch competition.

Go ahead and buy Doom II - if you think you can take the heat. [Dec 1994, p.134]
