For what is a technically simple game, this is one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had. It made me experience feelings I never thought possible from a video game. If you like this type of genre, or are looking for a one of a kind gaming experience, this is a must. It's also free so....

I think I'm with a lot of people saying that these types of games have never appealed to me. That being said I saw some of it, decided to play it for myself and ... wow, man did it take me for a ride. I could explain why it's so good, but not without spoiling anything. This is a game that manages to keep you thinking about it long after you have turned it off.

Maybe I shouldn’t give this game a 10/10. I mean, it’s a virtual novel-dating simulator. What about that warrants the praise of a masterpiece?

Well. That is not something I am willing to discuss in this review. I don’t even wanna say anything about this game. Just experience it for yourself (not really a review if you don’t talk about the game, I know, but please trust me on this one,

And this is my first time playing an anime/visual novel game, and I've never said this at all, since I'm not much into anime, but at first Yuri was my waifu, but now I'm leaning towards Monika.

The people who are most likely to appreciate some of the more subtle aspects of it are those that have played similar "dating-sim" type games before, or are at least familiar with the genre and its tropes, but I think anyone who enjoys a thoughtful and original twist will find something to like here. The writing is done extremely well, perfectly aping the often saccharine dialog of these kinds of games, while slowly changing direction until things are very, very different.

Fairly short, but an amazingly memorable experience. Easily one of my favorite games. Ever.

You start to really care for these girls and then they just do something that feels irrational but it isn't. This is a very real game, and this game makes you think. This is my 3rd favorite game of ALL time. The way it is DISGUISED as a dating sim and then an actual real life simulator with decisions that matter is so amazing. This games story and writing are also astounding. The music is rich, the only flaw is that is isn't a game. There is 0.1% gameplay but that doesn't matter because this game is secretly a book. This game is truly amazing. Expand

I'm going to be honest - all this review needs as a summary is 6 words: "Don't judge this game by looks." But that in itself could spawn a lot of questions. So, instead, I will give my thoughts on this game. Minor spoilers are ahead, but not enough to spoil the entire game. This is why the spoiler box is left unticked.

At first glance, it's easy to dismiss this game - it only appears as a visual novel dating simulator in an anime style. One guy surrounded by four girls, a harem dream awaits. However, once you get into the game, you'll find it's not all that. If you play this game, prepare for several rides of frights, feels, and asking yourself "What just happened?". A lot of moments in this game will make you feel that way.

The story follows you, a male (yes, male. Maybe if this game forms a franchise, Team Salvato may include a choice of gender?) high school student, in at least 2nd year. The same doesn't specify what year exactly, but it does leave hints that tells you this isn't your first year. Your childhood friend, Sayori, encourages you to join the club that she is a part of, and after finding out it is full of "incredibly cute girls" (actual quote from the game), you reluctantly sell your soul for a cupcake and join the Literature Club, organised by Monika. However, you'll find that after a few days in the club, the girls... well, strange things happen. I won't say what, exactly, as it will take away the shock. But I must warn you - it will make you question what is going on. It will scar you. It may even leave you rocking, fearing your own computer.

The four girls you will meet in this will all interact with you differently, depending on the choices you make. This also goes for the poems you will write in the game. You will write poems by selecting 20 words that each go for one of three girls - Yuri, Natsuki, and Sayori. The words you choose will signal to Monika on who's writing style your poems are similar to. Sadly, you'll never get to read your own poems, but you'll get to read the poems the girls give you. Each poem has a special meaning behind it, which I really find interesting.

My last opinions on this game is that you should definitely give this a go for yourself. That is, if you're not afraid of letting the game manipulate its OWN FILES on your computer. If you don't want that to happen, I would recommend watching a playthrough of this (I prefer the GTLive playthrough, but a few big YouTubers have played this too). But just remember the warning the game gives at the very beginning - "This game is not suitable for children, or those who are easily disturbed."

Right now, i just feel that everyone should play this game at least once (a second, and maybe a third playthrough is necessary though lol), and not miss the chance to experience such an amazing story. But in video games, I'm a muscle-bound Titan defeating the prideful gods, or a stoic king charging with my armies into battle, or the mute hero who, with grit, a devout caravan of friends, and his ancestral sword, will save the world from evil. Doki Doki Literature Club is a mind boggling and hard hitting horror game that takes tried and tested formulas of both visual novels and dating sims and turns them on their heads. The themes and story pack a punch, and stayed with me long after I had finished playing. It may require commitment from some to get through but the reward for those who stick it is more than worth it
