For what is a technically simple game, this is one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had. It made me experience feelings I never thought possible from a video game. If you like this type of genre, or are looking for a one of a kind gaming experience, this is a must. It's also free so....

I think I'm with a lot of people saying that these types of games have never appealed to me. That being said I saw some of it, decided to play it for myself and ... wow, man did it take me for a ride. I could explain why it's so good, but not without spoiling anything. This is a game that manages to keep you thinking about it long after you have turned it off.

Maybe I shouldn’t give this game a 10/10. I mean, it’s a virtual novel-dating simulator. What about that warrants the praise of a masterpiece?

Well. That is not something I am willing to discuss in this review. I don’t even wanna say anything about this game. Just experience it for yourself (not really a review if you don’t talk about the game, I know, but please trust me on this one,

And this is my first time playing an anime/visual novel game, and I've never said this at all, since I'm not much into anime, but at first Yuri was my waifu, but now I'm leaning towards Monika.

The writing is done extremely well, perfectly aping the often saccharine dialog of these kinds of games, while slowly changing direction until things are very, very different.

Fairly short, but an amazingly memorable experience. Easily one of my favorite games. Ever.

You start to really care for these girls and then they just do something that feels irrational but it isn't. This is a very real game, and this game makes you think. This is my 3rd favorite game of ALL time. The way it is DISGUISED as a dating sim and then an actual real life simulator with decisions that matter is so amazing. This games story and writing are also astounding. The music is rich, the only flaw is that is isn't a game. There is 0.1% gameplay but that doesn't matter because this game is secretly a book. This game is truly amazing. Expand

I'm going to be honest - all this review needs as a summary is 6 words: "Don't judge this game by looks." But that in itself could spawn a lot of questions. So, instead, I will give my thoughts on this game. Minor spoilers are ahead, but not enough to spoil the entire game. This is why the spoiler box is left unticked.

At first glance, it's easy to dismiss this game - it only appears as a visual novel dating simulator in an anime style. One guy surrounded by four girls, a harem dream awaits. However, once you get into the game, you'll find it's not all that. If you play this game, prepare for several rides of frights, feels, and asking yourself "What just happened?". A lot of moments in this game will make you feel that way.

The story follows you, a male (yes, male. Maybe if this game forms a franchise, Team Salvato may include a choice of gender?) high school student, in at least 2nd year. The same doesn't specify what year exactly, but it does leave hints that tells you this isn't your first year. Your childhood friend, Sayori, encourages you to join the club that she is a part of, and after finding out it is full of "incredibly cute girls" (actual quote from the game), you reluctantly sell your soul for a cupcake and join the Literature Club, organised by Monika. However, you'll find that after a few days in the club, the girls... well, strange things happen. I won't say what, exactly, as it will take away the shock. But I must warn you - it will make you question what is going on. It will scar you. It may even leave you rocking, fearing your own computer.

The four girls you will meet in this will all interact with you differently, depending on the choices you make. This also goes for the poems you will write in the game. You will write poems by selecting 20 words that each go for one of three girls - Yuri, Natsuki, and Sayori. The words you choose will signal to Monika on who's writing style your poems are similar to. Sadly, you'll never get to read your own poems, but you'll get to read the poems the girls give you. Each poem has a special meaning behind it, which I really find interesting.

My last opinions on this game is that you should definitely give this a go for yourself. That is, if you're not afraid of letting the game manipulate its OWN FILES on your computer. If you don't want that to happen, I would recommend watching a playthrough of this (I prefer the GTLive playthrough, but a few big YouTubers have played this too). But just remember the warning the game gives at the very beginning - "This game is not suitable for children, or those who are easily disturbed."

Right now, i just feel that everyone should play this game at least once (a second, and maybe a third playthrough is necessary though lol), and not miss the chance to experience such an amazing story. Despites its heavy themes, or perhaps because of them, Doki Doki Literature Club is easily one of the MOST UNDERRATED games of 2017.

I'm not gonna lie, I've been saying it for a long time, but I'll say it again. Doki Doki Literature Club, in my view, wins Game of the Year, 2017. There's a reason why I call it the "Uncrowned King of 2017". I think that no matter who covers this game,

Direction: Everything I've seen out of Dan Salvato is a sheer MASTERCLASS. 10/10 S Rank

Sound: Poignant, effective and downright spine chilling at times. 10/10 S Rank

Design: Whether it is overall game design, or the cute designs of characters, which make a stark and haunting contrast, it is flatout impeccable. I'm not going to be claiming any technical mumbo jumbo, but being a director of sorts, I can see how well the design executes the intent. 10/10 an S Rank.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a valuable game to spend your time on. It may not be the best for those technically inclined for computer tech, because I'm not entirely sure about it, but from a casual perspective in this game, which is where I stand, I absolutely love and adore this game, and I've made some good friends and met some wonderful YouTubers through this awesome game.

You can see that the team behind it it's not a billion-selling one... however, they managed to make an excellent job (and no, I'm totally not the player of these kinda games).

Truly unique experience (a bit harsh if it caughts you unguarded, but totally comprehensible if you get to understand it's only a game).

I strongly believe this small visual novel was designed to elicit a reaction of grief and sadness rather than cheap thrills. The reason why this game is so unsettling and depressing if not because of the imagery and gore, but ultimately the fact that these unfortunate things happen to so many people around the world on a daily basis and we hardly even realize it, these situations are troubling to witness, as at some point in our lives we may feel these exact same emotions, we might live through the exact things same as these characters at some point in our lives. The player character, in this case, can either be a protagonist who attempts to free these characters from the existential hell that is the literature club, OR an antagonist who enjoys watching the psychological suffering of these characters. Either way, this is an incredible game with a wide array of complexities, definitely recommend. Expand

The way this game is setup is genius. The subtle hints that lead towards the disturbing events are placed in the perfect areas, areas where you're so distracted by the dialogue and conversations with the club, you don't even realize what is happening. I could go on about this game and it's unique gameplay and storytelling for hours, but I can sum up the entire game with this rating. 10/10.

If you are suffering from any sort of mental instability, it's a must NOT play. I don't wanna give too much away, so warning, (somewhat minor) SPOILERS AHEAD!

So this dating game with a dark twist left me with a minor depression for like 5 hours but it there were just so many other emotions that it was well worth it. The expertly written dialogue and the writing itself is impeccable, and being one who appreciates literature even hearing the poems was a great experience. Not only was the writing a work of pure genius, but the soundtrack and the music made for the game fit absolutely perfect with what was going on. Dan Salvato really immerses you in his world with charming dialogue and cute characters. The story grabbed me and I was completely hooked, and almost addicted to the game. I just couldn't wait to see what happened next, and when I saw what happened next I consistently felt fulfilled. This game made me feel a real connection with the characters that only games like Undertale (another game on my list of must-plays) could do. Not only do you begin to feel a connection to the characters but you also feel the pain and terror when they're ripped away from you. Even at the end of the game, the credits song really tugged at my heart strings and just made a beautiful ending. This game is just a roller coaster of emotions and by far the best horror game I have ever played. There is no other experience like it and if you're reading this and are okay with themes like suicide, depression, self harm, and abuse, then you have to play this game. Even my friend who only likes Fortnite enjoyed it!

This is my favourite game of all time I am not joking when I say that, the game starts as a normal anime, highschool roleplay, life simulator kind of game with a literature club and disguises itself as that for one whole hour of gameplay and then.. its turn into something much more sinister.

    Characters:

Yuri is edgy, dark and eerie.
Sayori is funny, kind and also quite self-aware.
    Natsuki is a spoiled brat.
    Monika is successful and smart.

Everything is going well, but Sayori hangs herself and then all your save files get wiped you restart and the game is broken, Yuri stabs herself and it turns out this whole time Monika deleted everyone from the files, which is why they died. You delete Monika and the game ends

Now, having completed it numerous times, there is still joy to be had by recommending it to others and hearing their reactions. I introduced this game to two of my friends, and both of them were quick to contact me after completing it both revealing the impact that the game had on them, and to "thank" me for putting them onto it. We still reminisce on it to this day.

To explain why this game is so great would be to spoil what makes it so. If you stick with it, even if you're not a fan of the "dating game" genre, you'll find that there is more to this game than initially meets the eye... but be sure to heed the warning when the game loads; this game is definitely not for those who are easily disturbed.

That's a really interesting game, at the beginning of the it's really happy and don't seems to be a psychological horror game, seems to be a very cool Visual novel with a very cool OST. But the things is going to be weird when Sayori committed suicide. After that the things is going to be very, very weird, after that we discovered that Monika was manipulating everybody just to be with you in the end, and that's the main plot, Monika just wanted to be with you. After that you can delete her file and she will try to repair the game without her but we discover that Sayori want the same thing, so Monika come back, stop Sayori and the game end.

For me, this game is a masterpiece, I'm just in love with this OST and the characters because, for me, this is not just a game, this game bring me a lot of memories and emotions that is hard to explain, I simply don't know how some pleoples can say this game is bad and stuff, This game is amazing and i can't describe in word how i love this game, For me, this game shoud be a 10/10.

Within such a short span, you're sucked into the game and everything feels so surreal. Despite the game only being a couple of hours, you really do feel for the characters and they all feel like actual human beings. The writing is amazing, no matter what people might say. I will admit, the first half of the game is quite boring. Very simple, and standard VN stuff. But the reason that's so is because it really makes the second half of it all that much better.

The visuals are also quite nice, being in the normal anime style and all, and also has some good detail and design to it as well. The backgrounds are also very well drawn. The OST is very simple, yet really leaves a lasting impact on you once you finish the game. The characters, in tandem with the writing are phenomenal also. It's essentially the same thing as the story. On the surface, you have some really standard stuff, you have the quirky, happy childhood friend who introduces you to the girls, you have the big **** girl in the form of a dandere, you have the cute and tiny tsundere, and you have the popular, pretty girl. Really normal stuff, but again, once you delve in deeper you really do feel for them. They have all these characteristics that make them feel truly like humans, really giving you a unique, and heartbreaking feel to it. If you do end up getting to the ending, you feel absolutely heartbroken man. It really breaks you inside, and leaves a lasting impression on you; something not a single game has done to me prior to watching the game.

The game isn't amazing because of these amazing, incredibly fun gameplay aspects, but rather, because of the great writing, and ability to really make you feel something after finishing it. That, to me, is something simply irreplaceable, and despite the fact that I still haven't played it, this game will always have a special place in my heart. Mastapeece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a masterpiece. Of course, Act 1 is pretty slow and boring, but that has a reason. The reason is that you should forget the warnings. You're supposed to forget about the psychological horror disclaimer and tags. You should start to like the characters and to just love the game. That's why Sayuri's death also hits so hard. It was unexpected. The situation was going well. But then something like that happens. You suddenly remember about the disclaimer, about Monika saying "You kinda left her hanging this morning" before you find her hanging herself. The clues were so obvious that you didn't even notice. Only after finishing the game and breaking your head about what the fu** just happened will let you remember it. Even the easter eggs, such as the character files and the lore of the game is just so well done. I can't believe how good this game is. Even those, who don't like anime that much, should play this game. It's worth it. And personally, it even changed a lot of stuff in my mind. Especially how I think about others. And I tend to think a bit deeper into people's personality. Expand

When I first saw this game on Steam, I genuinely though the "Psychological Horror" tag was just people abusing the system. Given the game's positive reception, its catchy cover and popularity, I decided to give it a go. After reading the reviews and being 2 hours in, I actually feared what might come next. I've never been so apprehensive about finishing a game due to its shocking nature. And sure enough, this game truly is disturbing, even if you prepare yourself for the worst. But it's impossible to keep the game's depth a secret when that makes up 90% of the appeal. So why am I giving this a positive review?

Well, the game breaks the fourth wall like no other. I encourage you to play this game in windowed mode and after about 2 hours in, open your steamappscommonDoki Doki Literature Clubcharacters directory. These are real files with a different extension (one is a PNG, another is Base64 encoded message etc.).The game itself, written in Python2, actually changes the files (and not just those in that folder) as you play, which makes it feel truly real.

But that's just some gimmick, right? Anyone could do that, it'sn ot the most creative idea. So, again, why am I giving this game a positive review? Especially after the ending it gave me. I assure I was most certainly NOT impressed. It left me more upset with the game and the writers' decision to end it like that, so much so that the shock factor was outweighed by my dismay of how it all happened. But you realise that's not all this game has to give.

What truly sets DDLC apart is that it serves a much deeper purpose than your ordinary game. As a visual novel, this genre has very limited interactivity, and despite my inexperience with VNs, I've always wondered what the purpose of them is compared to an eBook. Yet Doki Doki Literature Club makes the best possible use of the medium. Simply put, it is a tool to raise awareness of mental health issues. It truly creates a sense of empathy that cannot be expressed in any other medium. As you "read" through DDLC, you begin to get a sense of how truly horrible loneliness and depression must be. You start to feel bad yourself. Then you wonder how it must feel like to live with this. Even if you can relate to some of the themes explored in DDLC, you begin to realise just how deep they can go. It's frightening, concerning, yet what makes it so impactful is that this is not a joke. Yes, it is taken to the extreme. But it's absolutely real. These things do happen, and even if extreme cases are not so common, even milder issues must be... just awful.

So, despite the sadness, this game serves not only as an educational tool but also an inspiration. An inspiration to care more about those around you, and yourself of course, if you can relate to any of the characters. It makes you want to hug not only your friends and relatives but even strangers. It's one of those experiences that will stay with you. Depending on your personality, it may be haunting and you'll regret having beared witness to such tragedies. But to others, it may be a valuable learning experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very good. 9/10

It gets a 9 instead of a 10 because I thought the ending was a bit silly. I like how each of the characters end up being a bit more than they are initially presented as, but it feels like story didn't really go anywhere. I was expecting the game to be presented like some kind of Kobayashi Maru test where the player can't possibly win, but the game chooses to go with some fourth wall breaking thing.

I like how the game anticipated that I would try to kill the character who breaks the fourth wall, and it restores the other characters before restarting the game. Very well done.

I don't know what I was expecting when I started playing this game. I won't reveal Doki Doki Literature Club's secret here, because it's best to go into this one blind.

However, I will say this: Doki Doki Literature Club is not what it seems. And yet, in some ways, it is also exactly what it seems. It is somehow a critique of and an homage to the conventional visual novel/dating sim. It makes perfect sense for lead developer Dan Salvato to cite his "love-hate relationship with anime" as inspiration for creating the game. The cutesy characters and backgrounds are lovingly crafted. Even the name of the game itself is delightfully twee. Doki Doki Literature Club also subverts these kinds of genre conventions, but it's clear that the developers have some affection for the very thing they're lampooning.

While at first glance, the cute female characters are nothing but standard anime tropes, I found each of them gradually growing on me thanks to the excellent writing—one of the game's strong points. Of course, this only made the game's dark turns even more disturbing.

While there are other subversive visual novels out there, I doubt there's anything quite like Doki Doki Literature Club. A unique mix of kawaii and creepy with creative use of breaking the fourth wall, it's a game you won't forget easily.

I enjoyed the narrative style of the game. It is almost impossible to explain why without revealing anything about the story, so I will simply say that the narrative resources used in Doki Doki Literature Club! are very wisely managed, in such a way that everything fits at the end of the game. So, If this game didn't get so popular, it would've never come onto my radar, and I wouldn't have experienced this greatness. But, thankfully since this game has gotten popular that means you have no excuse to not play it. It's free.

Even if you don't like Visual Novels, even if you don't like anime. Even if you absolutely hate the sight of anime, give this game a chance, and for the love of god, play it blind. Don't spoil it for yourself, don't watch any videos, nothing and I promise you, it'll be worth your time.

EDIT: I first wrote this review in December of 2017. Initially, I gave it a 10, which now I think it a bit much even though I still love this game. As of now, I've become much more interested in anime and I'm very grateful that this game inspired me to step out of my comfort zone. As someone who called anime "trash" and for "weeaboos" because I thought it was funny, its a big transition of character. So if you haven't at least considered trying this game because you dislike anime (even though you likely know what happens) take into consideration that I was in a similar place.

Its been awhile since i had so much fun in VN series.

Story : its about MC meet 4 grill and he decide to join his childhood friend club
Animation : even if the game is free, without a doubt the animation is nice UNTIL **** HAPPENS.

I know VN isn't a type of a game everyone can enjoy, but as a VN, this game could be 1 of the best.

Spoiler : the 4th wall in this series is pretty deep.

The beginning can get a little monotonous as it drolls on and on. it's a few hours of gameplay similar to the barrier of entry you'd find in any good RPG. and let me tell you now it's well worth the wait because what lies after that first psychological scare... it a whole new world of horror. I won't say much more because it's an experience you really should experience it for yourself. Just know if you're easily susceptible to dark themes, you may want to consider playing with a friend. It truly is a game worth your time, and the fact that it's free makes it easy to justify the few things wrong with the game.

Doki Doki Literature Club is a mind boggling and hard hitting horror game that takes tried and tested formulas of both visual novels and dating sims and turns them on their heads. The themes and story pack a punch, and stayed with me long after I had finished playing. It may require commitment from some to get through but the reward for those who stick it is more than worth it

A horror game disguised as a dating sim. First couple of hours are boring and written poorly to the degree of being hard to digest for me, then things get better, but the story is still shallow and the substance plays second fiddle to the form. [01/2018, p.61]

Doki Doki Literature Club is a visual novella that masterfully manages to creep up on you, shatter the 4th wall with a sledgehammer and land it on your unsuspecting face.
