Repetitive combat. "Samey" skills and traits. Repetitive tactics. Arena-like environment for fights (looks very unnatural and cheap). Areas split in to character levels, like in MMO game. What's good is music (personally i like it) and nice graphics.

Since the rest of it is a very standard, conventional "isometric" CRPG, the combat is what needed to carry this game... and it didn't, not compared to other recent CRPGs of the same style.

Also, the "sex scenes..." shudder. Voyeur narrator narrating your decision tree sex life. Weird.

И вот эта дрянь хорошо продалась, а великолепная Tyranny нет?!
Очередное доказательство, что не лутбоксы виноваты в проблемах современных игр, а склонность игроков жрать и нахваливать полнейшее дерьмище в стиле Divinity Original Sin 2.

Game is slow and boring. Level design is bad, story not much good either, new battle system is horrible, dialogs whole new level worse without your party member being able to influence the outcome.

Also the written dialogues/narrations were presented in a clumsy fashion. My eyes were constantly searching to distinguish dialogue from information. Very tiring.

Before a dialogue starts, often some narration occurs first. This involves a lot of verbal padding. I.e. too much words are used which were entirely irrelevant. It drove me insane. Just get on with it.

Not to mention the manlet voice. I simply couldn't take it anymore. This voice is reused many times in DOS 2 and was also used in DOS, most notably as Headless Nick.

This was the only reason I uninstalled it. The senseless narrative padding, this guy with his unmanly voice and clumsy presentation of dialogue-options.

Divinity Original Sin 2 (DOS2) tries to be a classic "RPG" for PC in the mid to late 90s. It succeeds in emulating what made those games great, however, is that something that is still fun to play today?

For me, while the voice acting of all dialog is great, the lacks any animations or facial expressions. The narrator will describe the littlest thing (even laughing, when they could just have the voice actors do it, why have the narrator say "the character laughed"?). One of the great things about RPGs like Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic, Fallout 1&2, ect. is seeing the characters react to your decisions. In DOS2, you have to use your imagination, or the impact of the story is severely diminished. It's basically a book read to you aloud.

That said, the combat is very similar to DOS1. It feels like you have to be at or above the level of the enemies you're fighting or you'll have a rough time. The stats system is broken, however. The only stat you need is your classes' main stat (strength, finesse, or intelligence). Constitution does not matter (when does it even really :p) because armor scales very, very quickly with each level, making the HP bonus not needed. Wit used to matter a lot, but they nerfed it in beta because it made the game too easy, so now it on affects the turn order of your highest-wit character (really lame). It's still the second best stat due to a passive 1% increase to crit chance though. Finally there is memory, which increases the number of skills you can use at once and that's it. This is only needed for some casters and even then only a couple points. You can see there isn't a whole lot of choice in what stats you choose.

That's what this game comes down to, window dressing. For me, I simply want a more interactive experience and I feel like older games like Fallout are better balanced for combat and tell a better story. You can do a lot of bad things, but nothing comes of it, no one notices. That makes it less fun to me.

Graphics are serviceable here, about what you'd expect for an isometric game and dated by many other genres standards. The UI is okay in that it is functional with a keyboard and mouse, but it is poor with a controller. There is not a lot of loot in the game, you'll buy much of your equipment from the shops. However, you find a lot of crafting recipes, but finding useful ones is difficult.

You can play this game co-op with up to 3 others. It's not my cup of tea, but you can do that if you want. There's also a dungeon master deal where you can create your own adventure. Could be fun, but again, not what I bought the game for, so I don't have an opinion on that.

The game did not appeal to me as much as the original game did and I really had to force myself to finish the first game. I was hoping for improvement here, but gone is the quirky music and dialog from the first game that I liked. You may want to wait for a sale if you're curious about this one.

The combat and overall game mechanics would have been nice 20 years ago, by now they are just outdated. Games should be way more interactive. Especially the many scenes were the player is just told what is supposed to happen by some narrator, while the characters are just standing still, are a huge disappointment and one would be better off reading a book instead.
It still gets 5 points for gameplay because it has some good puzzles and exploration.

    Overall: 7/10
Could be a 9/10 if you like that kind of old fashioned game, though still not as good as Baldurs Gate.
For everyone who doesn't live in the past it would be a 7/10, they can accept the old school stuff.

Now onto something that pissed me off, line of site; this was a game mechanic introduced a decade ago in games, this game makes a real point of it; to the detriment of every combat. How fair is it when the you cant target the enemy after they just attacked you, smoke stops line of site even from an area attack aimed close, hell I can shoot a bow through smoke at a guess on the range, but steam in this game can ruin your fight. Larians Idea of line of site is an eyesore on there game and it is broken in its implementation, it sucked in the first one and its worse in this one when they emphasize high objects and cliffs in the open corridor phsuedo open gameplay.

Inventory bloat is a problem with games in general, this stems from containers being put everwhere and we need a list of just stuff to justify them, this game makes looting a chore, you will quickly fill up your inventory space with junk that your not sure what to keep due to the piecemail crafting that is ill put together.

Game ending for me(breaking, mabey), when you get to the ship after the island, your presentted with a protection type battle, your package dies game over; normally I would say this is a spoiler, but not when it will end you game and make you start over just to be able to get past it; it more of informative look at what the game does.

Ive played far worse and this is a decent game, but it rates mediocre.

As far as bugs, I encountered few, nothing that could not be fixed with a reload and redo.

I am never sure if there is much to be gained from a wall of ratings which consists "10 - wow".

This game is well done. It has a GM mode which is a great edition - if anyone uses it. Anything that is a return to yesteryear and the period of gaming where people actually used their own imaginations is always going to be good. It's just , I can't actually see many people actually using it.

The problem with games that hearken back to the past (and for mind this is a copy of Baldur's gate, a great game from the past) is that one thing you quickly realise is, how far games have actually come.

I enjoyed this game at first but somehow the desire to keep playing expired after leaving the first area of the game. The story was interesting enough. The lore was great and very new and imaginative. So why did I have so little desire to keep going?

Was it because there were so many little things I didn't complete properly? Was it because the combat was starting to grate on my nerves? Was it the Monty Haul of stuff I had to micro manage?

In truth it was a combination of all. For me a game is a measure mostly of how long I want to play it. So I have to mark this one down because, unfortunately, the answer for me was , about a week, or nowhere near long enough to warrant what I paid for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Original Sin 1 was great, played it in original and enhanced versions, really enjoyed it. The story line was silly of course, but as this type of game goes it was top of the class. The sequel is also very good (and also has a silly story). Plot accepted, for me its an 8. I can't give it a 9 or a 10 because it keeps way to much of the original game in terms of spells and abilities, inventory etc to really break new ground in that regard. Is is also A LOT easier on normal mode than Original Sin 1, which is good and bad. Its easier to navigate quest objectives which makes the whole thing flow along nicely, theres always a flag to aim for etc. The combat is easier and just as fun with one difference...the armor resists. Why add (or retain) a 'taunt' type skill if it cant be used off the bat? You have to dps physical dmg before using it...by that time all the mobs are spread out...so you can't add 'tank' into your strategy. Also, physical attacks (arrows and swords) effect physical armor while magic attacks (spells) effect magic armor...a bit simplistic to be fair....if my clothes are on fire it will effect their resistance to swords etc...it means there is little point doing both kinds of damage to some mobs, as its quicker to work down one type of armor...this frustrates rather than enhances the combat in my view. Also...fighting alongside NPC's is tricky as they are suicidal. I've recently done the black pits fight and the NPC I was trying to keep alive was not playing ball! Combat and story issues aside its still really fun and well worth playing. Expand

Enemies now have separate ratings for their physical and magical armour, and you have to reduce either to zero before you can start damaging their health or affecting them with your special attacks. Remember the joy of having your knight charge through a horde of enemies in the first DOS game and knocking them all over? You can't do that any more if your damage doesn't exceed their physical armour score. Combat now ends up becoming more of a war of attrition where you grind down enemy armour while trying to conserve your special attacks for use when their armour is finally gone. Tactics no longer seem to matter as much as it often comes down to whoever can inflict the most damage in a shorter period of time. The Disneyland amusement park type battlegrounds are still there as well, with barrels, ladders, and platforms all over the place in areas where combat is likely to occur. A nice touch is the introduction of elevation, where you can climb up to a higher vantage point in a combat to gain a substantial damage bonus against enemies below you, but it puts slower characters without any kind of teleportation ability at a bit of a disadvantage. The difficulty also seems to have been ramped up from the first game. Enemies often outnumber you significantly and have an irritating habit of focusing their attacks on the squishy characters, moving just out of range of your special attack that you find yourself 1 action point short of using that round, or else moving further than you expected and somehow being able to target you with an attack or two even though you were sure a wall would give you cover. Just when you think you're doing well, the game throws you into a boss battle which has you pushing up daisies and having to reload or restart (looking at you, ship battle at end of act 1).

Some of the niggling problems from the first game have still not been sorted out though; townsfolk will still constantly repeat the same lines over and over in the background while you are trying to concentrate on dealing with a merchant for example. There are still way too many items to pick up and having to manage your inventory constantly becomes a chore. I don't want to constantly end up picking up nails, branches, skulls and other junk all in the name of crafting. Can we not have a decent RPG without crafting in it - please??? Character models still lack any kind of facial animation which looks a bit strange when you hear them talking but you zoom in to see their lips aren't moving at all. Probably understandable though, considering this game was funded on Kickstarter.

It's still a good game though, but you can clearly see where this is not an AAA-type title. I would really love for Larian to be able to put together a big budget title in the near future!

    Pros:
    - Good writing
    - Fully voice acted
    - Fun turn based combat
    - Lots to do
    - 4 player multiplayer support (if you like that sort of thing)

    Cons:
    - Steep and unforgiving difficulty level compared to similar PC RPGs
    - Bloated inventory system
    - Maddeningly repetitive background dialogue
    - Lack of facial animations

Maybe it's too hardcore for me; I just didn't find enough explanation for the mechanics of the game and missed basic things like quest markers that I've got used to. Also it ended up being a case of having to manually save and reload so many times that it felt like a necessary chore.

Gameplay: this is likely the best aspect of the game. No other CRPG has the many and unique features of DOS2, likely thanks to this game using its own engine. Unlike in other isometric RPGs, the game is fully in 3D and so it is possible to interact, move, grab and attack a large number of elements of the environment, allowing a lot of creativity when solving the problems that are presented to us. One of the most famous aspects of the game is the interaction between elements. Thus, the pool of blood left by an enemy being stabbed can be frozen with an ice spell creating slippery surfaces. Water can be electrified which will paralyze enemies and oil or poisonous clouds can explode if set on fire. The enemies are ruthless and intelligent, blessing the fire that you have placed around them and transforming it into a healing blue fire, or cursing the harmless pool of water at your feet to transform it into a lake of worms and disease. The duration of the game easily reaches 100 hours and the progression, although limited to resolving the 4 acts of the game 1 after another, is extremely non-linear within each act, allowing you to solve the situation at your own pace and your own way, which gives a lot of replay value. Also interesting how the game lets you kill every NPC out there and still find a smart way of reworking the main quest and at the same time create consequences for what you have done. DOS2 is all about freedom of choices, both gameplay-wise and narrative-wise, and their consequences. Added to this, a multiplayer mode that really lets up to four players to share a world and leave their mark on it.

Setting: the graphics are already over the top for isometric RPGs, but they could improve in how detailed are the models of, at least, the main characters. The world is instanced in 4 big maps, which are very open, beautiful and overall really well crafted, filled with detail and secrets that make exploration a rewarding and a very entertaining process. There is also just the correct balance between battles and puzzles, so both elements keep being interesting until the end without becoming a tedious experience. The cities feel alive and the NPCs wandering both the cities and the roads always have interesting (or at least funny) things to tell us and/or sell us, sometimes even presenting us an exciting side quest. The NPCs will react to us committing a crime such as stealing from their pockets or from the nearby table, confronting us in different ways or actively looking for the culprit if we are sneaking. Regarding the sound aspect, every dialogue in the game is dubbed (even the ever present narrator voice) which is remarkable, and the music gets the job done and even gets to shine here and there. As good as the setting is, things could still be added to make it even better, such as a day-night cycle and a weather system.

Narrative: the narrative aspect is likely the weakest part of the game, as it happened in the first game too. About its good points, I could say the story is delivered in perfect dosage, giving you pieces of the plot little by little, always avoiding being overly verbose, and shifting depending on your methods of approaching a problem, which includes which character you use for that. Also the game is filled with really entertaining side quests, and the personal quests of your party members are no exception, keeping interesting and relevant until the end by adding new objectives with each arc. Another innovative option is how the character creator lets you play as one of the party members which gives an obvious replay value. Despite all this, the plot is however, not at the level of complexity of popular CRPGs, nor are the party members that, even with their very good side quests, just lack enough dialogue to avoid flatness. Same goes for the antagonists, that lack the relevance you would expect from them and never get to the point they should be, being physically absent for most of the game and sometimes even bordering the comical and the cliché in their scarce appearances.

In summary, DOS2 is one of the surprises of the year and both its gameplay and its world should be the role models for the CRPGs to come. Regarding the narrative, there is still a lot of room for improvement.

    Negative
    * Too long, should have been structured into more manageable hubs.
    * Too many confusing, unclear (sometimes a bit broken) quests
    * Too much loot, screen is often sprinkled with useless items. This made areas often a chore.
    * Ending felt a bit too loose regarding companions, especially ones with romantic interest
    * Performance can drop heavily if too many effects are going on
    * Source skills requiring "refueling", often in an evil way, takes a lot of fun out of using them

I almost gave up in Reaper's Cost due to the length, unclear goal and quest states. In the end I am glad I did not, but it was exhausting. All in all a really a good game.

Near perfection. A great slow paced RPG experience - for me this is one of the only video games that comes close to feeling like a long D&D campaign. Loaded with delicious RPG character building decisions. It's been a long time that I've sat and stared at which stats to select for 30 minutes every time I level up - so hard to decide... and I love it!

The game is somehow fun played with friends, me and the homies spent a lot of time playing together.
The only problem I have is how slow it is sometime, like I could go smoke a cigarette and after I came back 10 minutes later my friends were still playing and my turn didn't come up yet.

Outstanding game, I'd give it a 9.5/10 if I could. I played through this game about 9 times, was so much fun, and the characters were all amazing. This is one of the best CRPGs of all time. The lore is very interesting too. This game also served as a stepping stone for possibly the best RPG of all time Bauldr's Gate 3. Larian is amazing.

Many elements are missing, such as the day/night cycle and weather effects. In closing, I give DOS2 a 5 for effort, but that's it. Then I chose the lone wolf perk ( if you have one or two squadmates you get HUGE stat bonuses ) and then I was destroying everyone. It felt unfair, but it was better than losing so much.

Anyway, the combat's fluid and nice. But this game is more story-oriented if that's your thing. Wasn't really mine, but I appreciate how much detail is in this game.

I had to use Google several times to figure out impossible fights and puzzles. Progression is sadly threading a needle, do not fight stronger enemies! Very good game. Best RPG in years. This is in essence a 2017 version of games like Baldur's Gate, or Fallout with more modern looks and possibilities. It's not as good as those, but it starts going there. Very good writing, interesting quests with moral greys and the best top down combat I've seen. Aside from those admittedly poorly implemented mechanics, however, the game's combat engine has anything a fan of the genre could ask. It's turn-based and squad-based, while also boasting environmental interactivity, a proper positioning system, now with elevation mechanics, and an impressive array of spells, status effects, buffs, debuffs, and moves.

Even the reviled armor system brought something to the table by limiting the effectiveness of the CC spam and alpha strikes that dominated the first game, allowing for more challenging and varied encounters. That is why despite its flaws, D:OS 2's combat remains a rewarding experience for those who can look past some of its more inelegant design choices.

Even though combat is arguably the game's central aspect, it's worth highlighting some of the improvements made in other areas: a more varied and nuanced skill system, greater race variety, increased reactivity, and better art direction, writing and exploration. This last element is especially noteworthy, as the game boasts detailed maps for each Act packed with diverse loot, encounters, quests, and secrets, which, combined with the game's environmental interactivity and open-endlessness, allow for engaging expeditions full of surprises. This game is well worth your money and your time.

Also the way the games interfaces work, its a truly open game with many MANY ways to accomplish tasks. In fact since 99% of NPCs will trade with you, in late game, after losing to a boss character several times, I went back and engage him in conversation and bought all the items he had so he couldn't use them in battle when we fought!

The dialogues and narration are once again flawless, with writing and voice acting (at least in english) that are a real pleasure to listen to. The story is maybe the weakest point, which is not to say it's anywhere near bad - it's just not as emotionally engaging (at least for me personally) as some other games, such as The Witcher 3. One major pain in the ass was the inability to select and move several items in the inventory at once, which meant I spent more time shuffling about in the inventory in this game that the entire playtime in some not-too-short games... But overall, technical issues were very scarce for a game of this scope, and (apart from the inventory) did not distract me from the awesomeness of the world and the gameplay. First off, the difficulty level and damage NPCs is much higher than most games. I’m a long time soulsborne enthusiast and I definitely enjoy a challenge but I found DOI combat to be a painful experience to be avoided when possible. On the normal difficulty level I was constantly low on health potions and Rez scrolls. Every battle was against groups of foes with extremely powerful spells and attacks who’s AI positions them perfectly while you scramble to use your first couple moves to position well you’re already getting destroyed by devastating attacks. I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that every battle was barely one by the skin of my teeth and with my crew half dead and needing expensive Rez scrolls. I had to constantly use the quick save and load to get through party wipes and for any small mistake made. It’s extremely punishing and if you don’t excel at battle tactics and strategy you won’t progress. Period. Even in the easy setting the difficulty is still ridiculously hard and it takes all your effort to make it past minor groups of mobs. All of this is mind made me NOT want to explore for fear of getting wiped and losing my hard earned currency and items. It’s not fun. Now to the story. It’s a very stereotypical “you are the one” story. Entirely unoriginal and boring. The writing borderlines from eccentric and interesting to straight cringe. The characters are bland. There isn’t a single memorable character that I could tell you about. That I cared about. I add this game to the long list of over-hyped games that are overrated and have a small vocal minority that champions them every chance they get. It’s just OK. The 'narrator' concept is brilliantly implemented, I really didn't feel the need for animations while interacting with the world's characters. It was the hook that kept me going while I started playing. It just 'works', I don't remember any other rpg game that implemented it like this... The story is complex and interesting. Maybe it gets a little too twisted at times, but the 'script' is very well written so it's a pleasure.
The combat system gives such an immense freedom that you can only applaud it's creators. The drawback, at least for me, was the difficulty and the time invested in each battle. I don't have a lot of free time...and if you make mistakes (which you will) and you have to re-battle, well, it can take up to 1h+ , in some cases, for one battle. This was the conflictual part, loved and hated it, - oh, and the fact that sometimes I just don't see some darn levers, that are too blended in the environment ..really frustrating-

As a side note, I found it to be more balanced if I play in 'explorer' mode and fight with levels greater than mine (up to 2 points), otherwise it's too easy. It's just tad easier than 'classic' mode while fighting with the same level. Great oldschool RPG. Really love to play it. Not so strong, but nice storyline. But very interesting characters and really nice gameplay, which gives you lot of freedom. You can do quests by many ways. Also, you can use non standart ways, to cut some things, and finish quest faster. Really nice game with very strong RPG moment and open world full of freedom.

D:OS II is very good game. It has beautiful look, interesting story, good characters.

However it have also some cons: slow leveling which force you to grind, or you will be at terrible disadvantage, enemies who nearly always have better gear, but the biggest problem for me is the fact, that has booooring world.

I still do not like the font. The annoying NPC banter is also still present, but all and all, these are pretty minor things. There is almost an endless number of ways how to setup your party and characters. That together with very non-linear quests means great replay value. The difficulty can vary depending on your party setup, but all things considering it is more consistent than in the first game. They stay out of microtransactions, which is great, although the SJW crap has definitely stronger presence in this game than in the first one. We now have black dwarves, lesbian blacksmiths, markswomen, dwarven queendom and other treats. What a great little progressive fantasy world.

In my opinion it is a great example of how to make a sequel of a successful game. Final verdict: 82 %

This feels like playing a tableop RPG more than any other game ever has. Such a detailed and deep world full of secrets to find, ancient dungeons to explore and baddies to strike down in super satisfying turn based combat.

The only complaint I have is that there is too much focus on the origin characters and making a custom character makes you feel like you are missing out on content.

A great game that you can spend hours and hours playing! Only complaint is that it can get too complex and vague at times, making it difficult to move forward unless you look it up online. Also if you sell an important item without really realizing it, good luck trying to find that sucker again.

If Divinity: Original Sin 2 had only been an enormous single-player RPG, it would still be far better than most of what you could compare it to. The fact that it has such well-implemented co-op and a user-friendly game master mode gives it a tremendous amount of value at a time where such a thing can feel like a rarity. Even if you never touch all of its various components, you'll still be left with a role-playing game that exemplifies the best aspects of its genre.

For those looking to get into cRPGs, and even for those just searching for a great RPG, Divinity: Original Sin II is heartily recommended. It has all the virtues that fans of the subgenre have extolled and wraps them up in a way that is much friendlier to newcomers than every other title I've tried. Combine that with fantastic writing, a highly engaging combat system, and great design, and you have another standout RPG in a year packed full of them.
