If you enjoy tactics games, turn based strategy games, fantasy RPGs, or games rich with lore and content, you should almost certainly enjoy Divinity: Original Sin 2. This is my favorite game from 2017, without a doubt.

The game is incredibly well made from every perspective, and despite feeling like the content was so deep that it would never end, the first thing I wanted to do when I beat it was to play it again to uncover everything I missed. No joke, I had some serious internal conflicts playing this game because while I desperately wanted to progress the very compelling main story and individual character stories, I also had a strong fear that I would miss some small detail somewhere that would lead to yet another super interesting series of adventures - and I did.

That's the thing that deserves the most praise in this game - the content. No other game that I've experienced has so carefully crafted dialogue, adventure, and theme into EVERY character you encounter. I don't just mean the "quest givers" or main characters, but every NPC you experience in the game (which semi-spoiler, includes every animal, btw) has something relevant to say to you. It's equal parts impressive and infuriating, because it just takes so much time to talk to every living thing on the world of Rivellon, and you never know when a small conversation can turn into an entire chain of quests that leads you to some amazing piece of gear or new abilities. Not only do all of the NPCs have dialogue, but every line of dialogue is voice acted - over 74,000 lines from what I've seen advertised, and it's damn good. The dialogue is very well written, I fell in love with the characters because of it, and while the content can be dark and brooding, it's also has some over-the-top cheesiness to keep you from taking the game too seriously - it felt like they nailed it here and found the perfect balance.

The story, the setting, the characters: they are what make this game so special. I have to thank the creators for presenting these things so masterfully that I had multiple memorable, emotional experiences.

For gameplay, the combat system has enough depth to keep you learning new combos, tricks, and strategies throughout your entire adventure. At the same time, it's approachable thanks to a clever UI, and it rewards you for playing it the way you want. You can build a team of four phsyical damage dealers, you can build a balanced team with a tank, archer, mage, and support, or you can go for two "lone-wolf" mages - and you can make it all work! Many parts of combat aren't ever explained to the player, but can be figured out through trial and error, reading the books that you pick up through the game, or a bit of online searching. The character building and progression should be familiar enough to anyone who has played an RPG before and takes a lot of inspiration from other games like D&D, and the interface generally does a great of showing you everything that's going on. The difficulty scaling could have been more creative, I think, for expert players who push the limits of the game mechanics and AI, but for anyone below that, the difficulty ratings do a great job of maintaining a challenge for the player regardless of their own skillsets.

The music is another exceptional part of the game. Borislav Slavov truly showed off his ability to convey emotion with songs like "Rivellon" and "Symphony of the Void," and if you're someone who turns off music when they play games, I suggest you allow this soundtrack to immerse you in the rich world on display. Moments of triumph, anxiety, mystery - they're all brought to life by the great music. Some seriously powerful feels hit me the first time I heard "Sing for Me," a sincere thanks to Mr. Slavov.

If you need more reasons to play the game, it supports multiplayer - which I don't actually reccommend doing until you've beaten the game because you'll likely miss out on some of the dialogue and cool little bits here and there as your friends inevitably wander away. They also released a Game Master mode that I've seen successfully implemented for an entire RPG campaign, and while it does have some bugs/limitations from my experience, it's still a working platform that comes for free with the game.

I almost always find reasons not to give games a perfect score, but in my mind, DOS2 is totally worthy of a 10/10 rating based on the sheer amount of content, the attention to detail, the character development, the compelling story, the satisfying gameplay mechanics, and a superb soundtrack. Sure, you will be able to find bugs, gripes, or issues, but there is nothing promised that this game doesn't deliver on, and it exceeded my expectations in every category.

I can't wait for more from Larian.

    * The chracters and their individual stories are great
    * Lots of secret things to discover
    * Combat is extremely fun but also extremely hard (to me) at times, which is fun to me because it makes it much more rewarding when you succeed, like a good old RPG.
    * The music is unique and topnotch. The composer has his own style entirely, doesn't remind me of anything but still the music is very fitting always.
    * You can have many different combat-builds which opens up a lot of freedom, however I prefer a class system myself.
    * The game is huge. It just continues and continues.
    * The Graphics and enviromental/character design is awsome
    * Voiceacting is amazing
    * Satisfying ending
    * Few bugs
    * Great choices that matter
    * Humor
    -

*Annoying puzzles sometimes that add nothing to the gameplay except for annoyance. Some might probably like them, I was not one of them.
    * One "act" is a lot worse than the others.
    * Area over effects can be a bit overwhelming at times
    * The questbook in the original version was confusing (Fixed in definitive edition)
    * I like hard fights, but sometimes they are borderline broken and rely 100% on RNG.

Overall though, just like Divinity Original Sin, Divinity: Original Sin II is an amazing game and one of the best RPG:s ever made.

    CONS:
No search function in bags. I really thought they'd add this in for the second as it was sometimes ridiculous trying to find one item buried in 100's of items you've found along the way.
Drop/In out multiplayer is iffy. I am not really a fan of the system because it really penalizes you for joining someone else's game. Everything is saved for him and once you log out it's like you haven't played at all on your own character. If there is a way to load your character into someone else's multiplayer game then disregard this but right now I haven't seen anything about that.

Obviously I haven't finished the game yet. (It's way to early from release date, future readers).
I'm about 20+ hours into it. I had 1 restart near the beginning. So I'm clearing the place up, close to leaving the starting island.
But judging the experience so far, as if that alone was a single game, it fully deserves a 9.5/10. From what we've been told that's about 25% of the game.

The learning curve might be steep for some new players to the genre. But really it just comes down to getting out of the prisoners rags & gearing up, speaking to everyone, and exploring/fighting/THIEVING, your way until you level. Then it kicks in and you won't wanna stop. it really feels like we are being treated to some amazingly talented stuff right now in gaming. Prey, Dishonoured 2, XCOM 2 etc. etc.

I think the best word to describe D:OS II would be 'deep'. Your character's stats, your decisions in the story, your interactions with other characters, the environment and in combat are all nuanced and have lasting consequences. The game's greatest achievement is that, despite the depth built in on every level, the game never becomes convoluted or confusing. It is a testament to Larian studios that somehow D:OS II has largely avoided the compromises between accessibility and depth that so many RPGs have made over the years.

Larian Studios strike again with massive cRPG game and if you love this genre - you have to play this one. It's pure game as it gets, no micro-transaction bullcrap, no day 1 dlc, nothing - just a brilliant game made with passion.

Obviously the game is not perfect, no game is and nothing is, but it's bloody good. You start the game you are not hand-held by anything, you figure you way thru and do your things your own way. You have plenty of option to choose from, starting from your own character - you have many playstyles to choose from: fighter, summoner, necromancer, archer, rogue assassin, mage of 4 different forces of nature, polymorphy and you combine those anyway you like to make a truly unique build and experience in gameplay. You can create your own character from scratch or play one of the 6 origin characters. The origin characters serve as fantastic companions to choose from as well, all of them being different and unique in personality and special abilities. All companions have a unique storyline to experience.

The quests, dialogue writing and exploration feel really good and thru your gameplay you'll be accompanied with brilliant music written this time by a new composer (Borislav Slavov) and it's up to par with original composer that worked for Larian for so many years, but sadly passed away soon after prequel of this game came out (rest in piece Kirill Pokrovsky). Unlike many other cRPG - this one is fully voice acted for all NPC and a narrator and it ads to immersion - believe me!

Combat is one of the best in cRPG games in my honest opinion. It's tactical turn-based combat, but it's not hexagon map based. Instead you only have range units that limit you how far you can move your character or how far you can reach with your skills and how big area you can cover - this way it feels more natural. Each turn your party characters get set amount of action points and there your tactics begin on how to use them - whether to strike some damage, crowd control enemies, buff you or your party member, or move your character to a new position. On top of that - you can combo elements for extra effects: fire + oil = massive explosions, etc. You can use environment to your advantage or it can be used by the enemy against you - so play smart, every decision matters and has consequences. You cannot ask for a better combat in cRPG.

Ofc there are few minor problems with the game - a minor bug here and there, but nothing impacting your experience a lot and story is not the best I've seen in genre, but it's solid enough to suck you in.

I didn't play 10/10 game yet (because it would have to be absolutely perfect in every way - that's how strict I am) but Divinity Original Sin 2 is close one. My 9/10 would be 10 for most reviewers out here.

If you are looking for fantastic adventure without being held by your hand - the game is for you. If your are looking for modern cRPG - Divinity Original Sin 2 should be your prime choice!

The only complaints I see about this game seem to come from people who are frustrated that they aren't smart enough to beat the battles without save scumming. I even see one of the reviews on here some dude crying about have trouble with the game on friggen explorer mode which is just insane to me, because it makes the game super easy, too easy in my opinion so I play on classic which has a good balance of difficulty and fun. I'll probably do a second run in tactician and also on the permadeath option mainly because there is just SO MUCH CONTENT in this game. The stories are deep and thoroughly interesting. The graphics are beautiful. The combat is seriously some of best tactical strategy RPG gaming that has ever graced the human race. The only problem with the game right now has to do with a few bugs here and there, but nothing gamebreaking, just slightly annoying, like the global chat was broken with the latest 'hotfix' but the bug is supposed to fixed very soon in an upcoming patch, but there is nothing that is so much of an issue that it actually detracts from any of the pure enjoyment that this game has offer. I'd say if you like interesting stories, intelligent combat and D&D style tabletop RPGs then this game is absolutely for you. If you have an IQ below 40, only play Madden and Call of Duty and can't stand excellent stories and voice acting, then you should probably stay away. One more thing that is awesome is that this game ships with a Game Master mode which is sort of like being a Dungeon Master for D&D or Pathfinder, but in a videogame where you can create your own stories and then act them out with your friends. In it you can play as the all powerful storyteller and god of the game or you can simply be along for the ride and let someone else take the reigns. Besides that what is really interesting is the modding API released with the game the Divinity Engine 2, which is a stupid powerful editor in the context of this game and it allows you to do everything from building your own maps to completely overhauling the game into something completely new (see the quick proof of concept soccer mod that has already been released). It's a turn-based isometric RPG which attempts to do what Sword Coast Legends never did: make a computer game that captured the essence of PnP, complete with campaign editor (not tried yet, since this is an EA review), GM mode and true RPG-freedom-of-choice. It is very similar to RPG's of old, like Neverwinter Nights, Baldurs Gate etc.

I have only completed Act 1 so far, since that's all that exists in the early access version, but I am hooked. The game is a joy to play. Difficult at times, yet rewarding too. It offers true freedom of choice in the way you play and create your character. It features a classless character system so you are free to do whatever you want with your character. It also features various "origin" characters which are kind of pre-generated characters with fleshed out backgrounds (the kind of thing you do yourself in a D&D campaign). You can choose to play one of those or alternatively make up your own and recruit them in game.

There are many ways to solve the quests in game, offering a lot of replay value. Race, "tags" (such as Outlaw etc.) all make NPC's treat you differently and offer various other ways to do things. The co-op gameplay (up to 4 players) has also been specifically designed with this in mind, meaning your party may not always see eye-to-eye on things. This creates the potential for some interesting RP scenarios.

Although the version I played does not yet feature a GM mode or level editor, this looks to be the icing on the cake and could significantly increase play-time. They will also offer Steam Workshop support for "click-and-play" modding.

Now all they need to do is offer the ability to import/export characters...

    Summary
Overwhelming to begin with, but once you get to grips with the game mechanics you realise just how well crafted this game is. Gorgeous graphics, wonderful sound and music, solid turn-based tactical combat and endless replay value.

There is just a lot to take in... You may wander into battles you are not ready for, you may not have seen those vines to climb up the first 3 times you scanned the area, but stick with it. It is incredibly rewarding once the mechanics become second nature to you.

It's almost as if it's an improved version of the first game. Gameplay feels like the first one, but there are alot of improvements and additions. Character class customization is less restrictive and less punishing than the first game, giving the player more freedom to experiment with various skill proficiency combinations.

Their initial marketing drive was to recreate the Baldur's Gate experience using the game's Gamemaster mode. It's probably the biggest addition to the game, along with PvP mode. The game itself is entertaining, the Gamemaster mode and PvP mode could add more value to the game for those who are interested or curious.

Characters and their dialogue have some charm. The world is interesting to explore as well, along with talking to the NPCs. Some RPGs have NPCs that just drone and drone about uninteresting stuff, sort of like filler content. In this game I find alot of NPCs have "personality" in their dialogue.

It is very apparent the developers intended the game to be replayed multiple times. While replayability is nice, they gimped the characterization and the dialogue to revolve around this replayability. It should have been the gameplay that's replayable. They forced the story to be gimped so the player has to replay the game to know the full story of the characters. This is bad in my review. If it was multiple branching story arcs, then replaying the game for the story would have been worth it, but nope, they just cut content depending on which characters you play. Why? In multiplayer mode, you experience the whole thing. Why cut some story parts in single player mode just because you control only one main character?

The combat system is degnised to make fights more balanced (compared to DOS1) but it forces to you to grind for exp and gold because as soon as u level up or change map all the gear u have became useless and seems like u are starting the game over due to the big increase of magic and physical protection that the next level objects have (same story for the weapons damage). Borderland and diablo 3 use the same system and I really hate it. The last map is really boring whit a terrible plot. Lack of visual puzzles (only 1 ). Missions log too intricated.
    pro:
Amazing area whit superb music , companions storyes are great and intriguing especially the red prince and sebille. The possibility to re-spec your pg and companions every time u want is really a nice feature (avaiable only after u left fort joy). The freedom to explore and complete quests is great.
Funny and not repetitive side quests. NPC and villains characterization is suberb.
Spike emotional moments ... the plot take me in, can't stop playng.

advice: if you find too it too hard to procedd, spec 2 pg with summonig 10 (conjure incarnate, power infusion and farsight Infusion)

As a veteran who played the first game thoroughly, I started this off in Tactician Mode and suffered immensely for my hubris, but with patience and determination, I made it to the end and even developed a few unique tricks of my own to overcome the very hard gameplay, especially at the start. I loved The Red Prince, he is an arrogant s-e-x maniac who wants to be at war with the world and bring back dragons. Sadha, the Red Princess is so hot, she gives me beastiality! My custom undead lizard character also fell in love with the tortured, twisted, psycho chick Sebille. I must have necrophilia and exophilia as well! Sick!

I also love how my pet died in a fierce battle from enemy AoE attacks, but his spirit still follows me around like the true loyal friend he is. Only a masterpiece work of art can think of something like this.

The story is really dark! All of the Gods are manipulative and evil! The major factions are all evil and by the end, even my character turned evil! By the end of the game, I was betraying everyone left and right! A game that brings out our most hidden and sickest desires, with this much lizard and undead erotica, deserves a 11/10!

Send the devs your love with a purchase even during a Steam or GOG sale. You won't regret it!

Until I finally tried getting into Divinity Original Sin, I chose the 2, and again, I think it is the best RPG ever. The game is perfect in every single regard, but the most important part to me is the difficulty and the depth of the combat system. After having tried Tyranny, and having gotten ultra-bored even playing in the highest difficulty, I really felt saved with DOS2, by far the most unforgiving game I've ever played (and that's a major compliment, since it's not sadistic level like Super Meat Boy or Cuphead). So many games these days have amazing stories and ambiences, but such simplistic gameplay. I call it one thing: LAZINESS. Because it requires way more heart and talent and genius to develop a deep/complex gameplay, than to create pretty graphics and stories. (Not to mention it's not commercially feasable, giving these Gaming times dominated by filthy casuals). Props Larian (and Owlcat games) for truly saving RPGs. 11/10 Expand

Im not sure who is responsible for the dumbing down of games, probably something along the lines of EA + Ubisoft + Bethesda + Activision, they truly have changed gaming forever. So you might say, but if you dont like AAA games, why don't you try indie games like Factorio and so on.....
In my opinion, indie games aren't any better than AAA games. - Yes, most popular indie games are polished and dont have any microtransactions but I still find their gameplay shallow, or just boring and dull. Factorio for example, is really tiring in my opinion and not fun, its more of a job that you dont get paid to do.

Anyway, Divinity: Original Sin 2, just buy the game its really good, feels like a game from the golden age with loads of inovation of course, Writing that is perfect for the game (Its not book level writing but no game has that), its very deep, AMAZING customization for classes, enemies don't level with you which is amazing.

9/10 - Amazing CRPG for all REAL RPG fans, if you like Skyrim don't play this because ive read countless threads on its forum coming from Skyrim fans saying that the game is too complex, this is for proper RPG fans only.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Original Sin 1 was great, played it in original and enhanced versions, really enjoyed it. The story line was silly of course, but as this type of game goes it was top of the class. The sequel is also very good (and also has a silly story). Plot accepted, for me its an 8. I can't give it a 9 or a 10 because it keeps way to much of the original game in terms of spells and abilities, inventory etc to really break new ground in that regard. Is is also A LOT easier on normal mode than Original Sin 1, which is good and bad. Its easier to navigate quest objectives which makes the whole thing flow along nicely, theres always a flag to aim for etc. The combat is easier and just as fun with one difference...the armor resists. Why add (or retain) a 'taunt' type skill if it cant be used off the bat? You have to dps physical dmg before using it...by that time all the mobs are spread out...so you can't add 'tank' into your strategy. Also, physical attacks (arrows and swords) effect physical armor while magic attacks (spells) effect magic armor...a bit simplistic to be fair....if my clothes are on fire it will effect their resistance to swords etc...it means there is little point doing both kinds of damage to some mobs, as its quicker to work down one type of armor...this frustrates rather than enhances the combat in my view. Also...fighting alongside NPC's is tricky as they are suicidal. I've recently done the black pits fight and the NPC I was trying to keep alive was not playing ball! Combat and story issues aside its still really fun and well worth playing. Expand

Enemies now have separate ratings for their physical and magical armour, and you have to reduce either to zero before you can start damaging their health or affecting them with your special attacks. Remember the joy of having your knight charge through a horde of enemies in the first DOS game and knocking them all over? You can't do that any more if your damage doesn't exceed their physical armour score. Combat now ends up becoming more of a war of attrition where you grind down enemy armour while trying to conserve your special attacks for use when their armour is finally gone. Tactics no longer seem to matter as much as it often comes down to whoever can inflict the most damage in a shorter period of time. The Disneyland amusement park type battlegrounds are still there as well, with barrels, ladders, and platforms all over the place in areas where combat is likely to occur. A nice touch is the introduction of elevation, where you can climb up to a higher vantage point in a combat to gain a substantial damage bonus against enemies below you, but it puts slower characters without any kind of teleportation ability at a bit of a disadvantage. The difficulty also seems to have been ramped up from the first game. Enemies often outnumber you significantly and have an irritating habit of focusing their attacks on the squishy characters, moving just out of range of your special attack that you find yourself 1 action point short of using that round, or else moving further than you expected and somehow being able to target you with an attack or two even though you were sure a wall would give you cover. Just when you think you're doing well, the game throws you into a boss battle which has you pushing up daisies and having to reload or restart (looking at you, ship battle at end of act 1).

Some of the niggling problems from the first game have still not been sorted out though; townsfolk will still constantly repeat the same lines over and over in the background while you are trying to concentrate on dealing with a merchant for example. There are still way too many items to pick up and having to manage your inventory constantly becomes a chore. I don't want to constantly end up picking up nails, branches, skulls and other junk all in the name of crafting. Can we not have a decent RPG without crafting in it - please??? Character models still lack any kind of facial animation which looks a bit strange when you hear them talking but you zoom in to see their lips aren't moving at all. Probably understandable though, considering this game was funded on Kickstarter.

It's still a good game though, but you can clearly see where this is not an AAA-type title. I would really love for Larian to be able to put together a big budget title in the near future!

    Pros:
    - Good writing
    - Fully voice acted
    - Fun turn based combat
    - Lots to do
    - 4 player multiplayer support (if you like that sort of thing)

    Cons:
    - Steep and unforgiving difficulty level compared to similar PC RPGs
    - Bloated inventory system
    - Maddeningly repetitive background dialogue
    - Lack of facial animations

Unlike in other isometric RPGs, the game is fully in 3D and so it is possible to interact, move, grab and attack a large number of elements of the environment, allowing a lot of creativity when solving the problems that are presented to us. One of the most famous aspects of the game is the interaction between elements. Thus, the pool of blood left by an enemy being stabbed can be frozen with an ice spell creating slippery surfaces. Water can be electrified which will paralyze enemies and oil or poisonous clouds can explode if set on fire. The enemies are ruthless and intelligent, blessing the fire that you have placed around them and transforming it into a healing blue fire, or cursing the harmless pool of water at your feet to transform it into a lake of worms and disease. The duration of the game easily reaches 100 hours and the progression, although limited to resolving the 4 acts of the game 1 after another, is extremely non-linear within each act, allowing you to solve the situation at your own pace and your own way, which gives a lot of replay value. Also interesting how the game lets you kill every NPC out there and still find a smart way of reworking the main quest and at the same time create consequences for what you have done. DOS2 is all about freedom of choices, both gameplay-wise and narrative-wise, and their consequences. Added to this, a multiplayer mode that really lets up to four players to share a world and leave their mark on it.

Setting: the graphics are already over the top for isometric RPGs, but they could improve in how detailed are the models of, at least, the main characters. The world is instanced in 4 big maps, which are very open, beautiful and overall really well crafted, filled with detail and secrets that make exploration a rewarding and a very entertaining process. There is also just the correct balance between battles and puzzles, so both elements keep being interesting until the end without becoming a tedious experience. The cities feel alive and the NPCs wandering both the cities and the roads always have interesting (or at least funny) things to tell us and/or sell us, sometimes even presenting us an exciting side quest. The NPCs will react to us committing a crime such as stealing from their pockets or from the nearby table, confronting us in different ways or actively looking for the culprit if we are sneaking. Regarding the sound aspect, every dialogue in the game is dubbed (even the ever present narrator voice) which is remarkable, and the music gets the job done and even gets to shine here and there. As good as the setting is, things could still be added to make it even better, such as a day-night cycle and a weather system.

Narrative: the narrative aspect is likely the weakest part of the game, as it happened in the first game too. About its good points, I could say the story is delivered in perfect dosage, giving you pieces of the plot little by little, always avoiding being overly verbose, and shifting depending on your methods of approaching a problem, which includes which character you use for that. Also the game is filled with really entertaining side quests, and the personal quests of your party members are no exception, keeping interesting and relevant until the end by adding new objectives with each arc. Another innovative option is how the character creator lets you play as one of the party members which gives an obvious replay value. Despite all this, the plot is however, not at the level of complexity of popular CRPGs, nor are the party members that, even with their very good side quests, just lack enough dialogue to avoid flatness. Same goes for the antagonists, that lack the relevance you would expect from them and never get to the point they should be, being physically absent for most of the game and sometimes even bordering the comical and the cliché in their scarce appearances.

In summary, DOS2 is one of the surprises of the year and both its gameplay and its world should be the role models for the CRPGs to come. Regarding the narrative, there is still a lot of room for improvement.

    Negative
    * Too long, should have been structured into more manageable hubs.
    * Too many confusing, unclear (sometimes a bit broken) quests
    * Too much loot, screen is often sprinkled with useless items. This made areas often a chore.
    * Ending felt a bit too loose regarding companions, especially ones with romantic interest
    * Performance can drop heavily if too many effects are going on
    * Source skills requiring "refueling", often in an evil way, takes a lot of fun out of using them

I almost gave up in Reaper's Cost due to the length, unclear goal and quest states. In the end I am glad I did not, but it was exhausting. All in all a really a good game.

Near perfection. A great slow paced RPG experience - for me this is one of the only video games that comes close to feeling like a long D&D campaign. Loaded with delicious RPG character building decisions. It's been a long time that I've sat and stared at which stats to select for 30 minutes every time I level up - so hard to decide... and I love it!

Outstanding game, I'd give it a 9.5/10 if I could. I played through this game about 9 times, was so much fun, and the characters were all amazing. This is one of the best CRPGs of all time. The lore is very interesting too. This game also served as a stepping stone for possibly the best RPG of all time Bauldr's Gate 3. Larian is amazing.

Then I chose the lone wolf perk ( if you have one or two squadmates you get HUGE stat bonuses ) and then I was destroying everyone. It felt unfair, but it was better than losing so much.

Anyway, the combat's fluid and nice. But this game is more story-oriented if that's your thing. Wasn't really mine, but I appreciate how much detail is in this game.

RPG gem. Solid easy to understand writing/story and awesome voice acting. On the down, it's going to kill your social life, and it's actually EXTREMELY difficult. I had to use Google several times to figure out impossible fights and puzzles. Progression is sadly threading a needle, do not fight stronger enemies! Turn around and look for other tricky ways to level up.

Very good game. Best RPG in years. This is in essence a 2017 version of games like Baldur's Gate, or Fallout with more modern looks and possibilities. It's not as good as those, but it starts going there. Very good writing, interesting quests with moral greys and the best top down combat I've seen. Took me 129 hours to finish my first (complete) playtrough.

There are a few very minor gripes to be had, but most can be fixed on your own as the game is very mod-friendly, with the developers even adapting some of the most popular Steam Workshop contributions into official features, such as consumables to level up gear and a sprint feature. Aside from those admittedly poorly implemented mechanics, however, the game's combat engine has anything a fan of the genre could ask. It's turn-based and squad-based, while also boasting environmental interactivity, a proper positioning system, now with elevation mechanics, and an impressive array of spells, status effects, buffs, debuffs, and moves.

Even the reviled armor system brought something to the table by limiting the effectiveness of the CC spam and alpha strikes that dominated the first game, allowing for more challenging and varied encounters. That is why despite its flaws, D:OS 2's combat remains a rewarding experience for those who can look past some of its more inelegant design choices.

Even though combat is arguably the game's central aspect, it's worth highlighting some of the improvements made in other areas: a more varied and nuanced skill system, greater race variety, increased reactivity, and better art direction, writing and exploration. This last element is especially noteworthy, as the game boasts detailed maps for each Act packed with diverse loot, encounters, quests, and secrets, which, combined with the game's environmental interactivity and open-endlessness, allow for engaging expeditions full of surprises. This game is well worth your money and your time.

I played on tactician and the A.I. really fights you back. And not with cheap health bars (though they have them to) but with environmental stuff that you will want to incorporate into your own tactics. Also the way the games interfaces work, its a truly open game with many MANY ways to accomplish tasks. In fact since 99% of NPCs will trade with you, in late game, after losing to a boss character several times, I went back and engage him in conversation and bought all the items he had so he couldn't use them in battle when we fought!

There is no higher recommendation. I just dont give 10s

The dialogues and narration are once again flawless, with writing and voice acting (at least in english) that are a real pleasure to listen to. The story is maybe the weakest point, which is not to say it's anywhere near bad - it's just not as emotionally engaging (at least for me personally) as some other games, such as The Witcher 3. One major pain in the ass was the inability to select and move several items in the inventory at once, which meant I spent more time shuffling about in the inventory in this game that the entire playtime in some not-too-short games... But overall, technical issues were very scarce for a game of this scope, and (apart from the inventory) did not distract me from the awesomeness of the world and the gameplay. Thoroughly recommended :) Expand

The 'narrator' concept is brilliantly implemented, I really didn't feel the need for animations while interacting with the world's characters. It was the hook that kept me going while I started playing. It just 'works', I don't remember any other rpg game that implemented it like this... The story is complex and interesting. Maybe it gets a little too twisted at times, but the 'script' is very well written so it's a pleasure.
The combat system gives such an immense freedom that you can only applaud it's creators. The drawback, at least for me, was the difficulty and the time invested in each battle. I don't have a lot of free time...and if you make mistakes (which you will) and you have to re-battle, well, it can take up to 1h+ , in some cases, for one battle. This was the conflictual part, loved and hated it, - oh, and the fact that sometimes I just don't see some darn levers, that are too blended in the environment ..really frustrating-

As a side note, I found it to be more balanced if I play in 'explorer' mode and fight with levels greater than mine (up to 2 points), otherwise it's too easy. It's just tad easier than 'classic' mode while fighting with the same level. (throughout the game I constantly changed difficulty in order to find a balanced combat enjoyable for me) So get it, try it, enjoy it!

If Divinity: Original Sin 2 had only been an enormous single-player RPG, it would still be far better than most of what you could compare it to. The fact that it has such well-implemented co-op and a user-friendly game master mode gives it a tremendous amount of value at a time where such a thing can feel like a rarity. Even if you never touch all of its various components, you'll still be left with a role-playing game that exemplifies the best aspects of its genre.

It has all the virtues that fans of the subgenre have extolled and wraps them up in a way that is much friendlier to newcomers than every other title I've tried.
