A big disappointment. Was really looking guards to this one, but it is a stealth game, and as such not very fun. There is not that much freedom that is pretty clearly the intended route. Should you choose to go the action route, mechanics will prove to be unsatisfactory. Plot was also predictable after the intrigue (which is spoiled in game descriptions and even the title)

The story is really captivating, and the game offers countless ways to progress through it, making every playthrough feel like your own. I can't really think of any downsides of this game, it definitely deserves to be a classic! Also, it's fun to see how BioShock Infinite must've been inspired from this! Expand

The overall score is less than 9, because there is practically no plot nonlinearity. The variability is primitive, and only the fact that you have killed your opponents or avoided a fight affects the final game. For example, during the last passage I, as I could fight the plague, destroyed all the rats and mourners in their path, helped Slackjov, who spread the cure for the plague, and at every meeting I neutralized the old rags. But in the final I found out that the city was swallowed up by a plague, simply because I killed while passing, although I never left corpses, I took perk on the disappearance of bodies, and until that moment I passed them into the water to feed fish, or in a flock rats to physically destroed the body. But this game did not take into account, but only KILLED / DIDN'T KILL. Just one variable affecting the final? This spoiled the impression. Therefore .... 8.5 out of 10

The grey color pallet of the world got really distinctive for dishonored and it felt really well realized. But we have to mention the simple fact that Bethesda already had a "small" game with a awfully lot similar plot called Bioshock 2, which made the story for most players cliche.
The inventory and skill tree was really badly placed in the In-game menu which was tricky (time consuming and simply not convenient) to access at times and it also interrupted immersion with the momentum of the world/story. The HUD was simplistic and it gave just the right amount of information for the player, and it was easy to get used to and to utilize.
The graphics where a bit shady at certain places but non the less smooth. While some textures looked amazing others faulted in the close up detail. But non the less the games graphics and animation's mostly hold up pretty good, and it did age rather well, compared to 2015's game graphics. (Or downgrades)
The special visual effects where amazing and brutal some times with a lot of very well animated blood and gore. Lightnings where great to, but the smoke was just past gen. The voice acting was amazingly done, with real life actors who delivered on the lines, and the some times intense or emotional scenes too. The AI gets no credit, due to their painfully basic simplicity and routines. The only thing that changed with the difficulty is the damage the enemies do the the player and how fast and far they spot you. Bad AI design which sadly outlived it self. The level design was creative, and filled with side quests and organic activities, but sadly due to the over power performance of the 'Blink' ability everything was simplified and the player could just bypass every unwanted scenario.
The game mechanics where well designed and very polished, but the before mentioned ability combined with the time slow let you play the 'Ghost' style without needing any other gadget in the player's inventory. Which made them useless. But if the player decides to play a different approach then some abilities and gadgets where a must. But now turning our focus the the core fault of the game and the biggest one at that: The player is presented with multiple approaches to different situations. All of them leading to more or less the same outcome, BUT not on the long term. This game was tagged: "Action Adventure, Modern, General, Modern". The action though well developed and polished was not really rewarded. In the end it comes down to a little mechanic called the chaos level, which measures the number of enemies killed and the chaos left after a mission. So after all you where not rewarded for playing in a more aggressive style but you where if you played stealth. This game would have earned higher if it would have been tagged stealth due to it's nature and reward/long term outcome ending.
The environment was where the game really did it's best with it's organic discovery system, and implementing no map where it was not needed. The activities and NPC interactions was the real thing that this game had immersion.
The collectibles where just there to ultimately help the player's upgrade certain tools at their disposal. And given the fact that there was no need to use them upgrades, the collectibles became unimportant and neglected them fast.
Overall it was a good game, which could have been better if the plot would have been more original, and the characters better developed, and the game-play style would not punish certain play styles and reward others. Plus the simple fact that this was more of a stealth game that an action one. Originality is key in gaming with a pepper of creativity, both of which was lacking here and combined with other (before mentioned) flaws it holds back the game from it's true potential.

This game delivers much more though in terms of creativity, design, and depth. Choosing the stealth route, you have plenty of exploration options and Blink to help you evade detection. Choosing violence, there are a lot of creative ways to dispatch your enemies. The game suffers a bit in this regard, as killing your enemies is not terribly challenging; it's a matter of making your own fun in doing it. For example, during one part of my playthrough, I opted not to stealth through a section and instead dispatched each guard in the area with a shot to the head with the crossbow from long range. That wasn't terribly fun - instead, I recommend mixing traps, takedowns, and various gadgets to make things more interesting. I was challenged enough by a stealth playthrough that I found that style to be rewarding enough by itself, but I can understand if others (probably more skilled than me) are turned off by the redundant gameplay. The game's plot is nice and intriguing, maybe not so original for the soul concept of betrayal and revenge, but it's well executed, the narrative is brilliant with a perfect balance that amaze you at every minute, but of course, it's been developed by Arkane Studios their previous games like Arx Fatalis was narrative brilliant as well.
Visually the game look's beautiful (Build with the Unreal 3 Engine that adds more points to it's visuals), the art style of the game it's unique and impressive (even though that it look cartoonish and low poly), taking influence from czech republic architecture and from olio paintings that give a beautiful and unique style that make's it his trademark.

Compared to Metro Last light, this has better gameplay mechanics, especially when stealth is considered. Its a very good port. Controls are very smooth, FOV is adjustable, you can pause any time, cutscenes can be skipped, alt-tab works well, levels load fast, and there is a nice old-fashioned manual save system. It even resumes reliably from S3 sleep. The writing is above average. Although linear, levels are well designed with multiple routes to objectives. Voice acting is good, but american - I would have preferred europeans in this victorian industrial setting. The graphics are technically average, but artistically very nice. All the textures are based on watercolor art instead of photos - it looks lovely.

This game is good, but some things prevent it from being great: The gameplay is solid, but we have seen it all before - it is very mainstream and not “realistic” - guards are as dumb as usual, and if I had to sneak past one, there was always a perfectly placed cover object etc, and I would roll my eyes. The game is also not very “large” - it was probably made on a modest budget by AAA standards. I also do not like the dark magic theme (though I do like the steampunk theme).

Overall, this is a quality game I can easily recommend.

Expand

Dishonored is a great immersive sim, probably even my favourite. Every part of a gameplay is done masterfully. Story is not that good, but the characters are amazing, even nameless NPCs get interesting dialogues, that you can overhear taking stealth approach. And all the game endings are very satisfying.

First person stealth at its finest. The story could use a bit more juice. I had to push through the end of this one as the energy died down about mid way through. I chose the dark path. Killed all in my way. I am curious on how it would play out if I play through more like a ghost. Still had a great time with Dishonored.

The game has a lot of books and notes laying around that try to paint a picture of this world, and I don't really find any of it interesting. I suppose the history of bone charms and the stuff with the magic guy have a payoff at the end, but I'll never see it because I probably won't play this game again.

I find the game boring because it's entirely about stealth. I have a crossbow with bolts, but it never has any ammo. I have a gun, and the enemies drop bullets for the gun, but the gun is loud and triggers alarms so more guards show up. Grenades are awesome, but those too will trigger alarms. The razor traps are cool, but those are always in limited supply. Direct sword fighting is downright awful in this game, so that leaves everything up to stealth kills. You either sneak past everyone or you stab everyone from behind. Some people might find that interesting, but I get sick of it fairly quick.

I think the most annoying problem is that batman vision is considered a spell. While games like Prey 2017, Batman, and Far Cry 3 allow the user to press V to see things, this game requires me to use the mouse wheel to select the spell and then right click to use the spell. Then I need to mouse wheel back to blink to set that as my spell. This happens every time the batman vision turns itself off, so it happens very often.

The storytelling is fantastic. It hooks you right away and never lets you go. You feel like you are evolving in a truly living world. For example, the small tutorial, optional, is seamlessly offered as a natural interaction with the little girl. Every optional objective is offered in such an organic manner, through eavesdropping, through dialogue with colourful characters, and so on.

And what a terrific world at that ! A city that owes to Venice, London and others, or at least their fantasy versions, with their brightest mansions and their gloomiest streets... And black magic, mechanical tools and weapons, parallel sciences, huge steel and glass constructions, massive machines, original art and ads, etc., all in a cohesive, understandable and very relatable universe, full of details and interconnections. This is excellent world-building.

The gameplay itself is all fun and freedom, in the vein of Thief or Hitman, with a variety of weapons and powers that you combine as you see fit, according to your style and your creativity. Sneaky or straightforward, peaceful or murderous, up to cruel or insanely heartless when the opportunity presents itself. All game mechanics are fun, some of them brilliant (like the rat packs.) When so many games write their subtitles too small, Dishonored even offers a visual power that is a boon for the optically-challenged player. Any aspect that could be improved, as far as I noticed, is minor, barely consequential.

Exceptionally, I also have to mention replayability for this title, as it is an obvious feature. I played a no-kill, invisible run, spending a lot of time hiding unconscious bodies. It felt more difficult than killing, and rightfully so, but I will have to play a murderous run one day, out of curiosity and for the lolz. The fact that you can't “buy” all the powers in one session is an excellent design decision in my book, and next time I'll try the more violent ones.

In short, everything about this game is memorable, fun, and begs for replays with experimentation.

The main part of the game is dedicated to Corvo. Alas, he is silent, which I don't like. But in the add-on (The Knife of Dunwall, Brigmore Witches), you're playing as Daud, who is much more talkative. Well, Michael Madsen, as Daud, is fun.
For those who love stealth games, especially Thief 1&2&3: IMHO, this game is more Thief-esque than the last Thief (2014). It has a good story, a nice NPCs and their dialogues, a lot of perfectly hidden stashes with loot, and you're free to hide from your foes and neutralize them in old Thief style - by sneaking from behind. Also, the game has a lot of tributes to the Thief series, so you'll definitely smile every time you see them.
    Bottom line: it's a must-have.

    STORY
Regarding the story, it's pretty generic. It exists, don't get me wrong, but it feels so boring that it's hard to find a reason to care. Part of it is because the voice acting wasn't great and sounded monotonous. I ultimately got bored of listening to the dialogue and mostly skipped the lengthy ones to focus on the game.

    GAMEPLAY
This game is basically BioShock 2 with a stealth system. It uses the same dual-wield formula, with stealth gameplay similar to what you'd find in Metal Gear Solid or a simpler version of Hitman.

The game is a bit lenient in how you can play. You're not punished for going guns blazing if you so desire, which is not really the way the developers intended for it to be played. It's not hard to kill everyone and rush through maps. Most of the abilities in the game were desired for stealth, so you don't often get a chance to use them if you're of the aggressive type.

If you do opt to be more subtle with your kills, then it can be quite amusing due to the many means available at your arsenal to assassinate.

    BALANCE
I strongly recommend playing above Normal. At Normal, the game is a walk in the park.

There is a ability in the game that allows you to teleport and kill enemies instantly. There's also another ability that is basically a wall hack, and another one that lets you slow or stop time.

You can max out these abilities and then you're set for the rest of the game because all the other abilities are primarily intended for stealth gameplay and are thus not necessary. This is a balance issue since the other abilities are only marginally better and not worth the time to scavenge for.

At Normal, the enemy AI isn't that great and they can't hit the broad side of a barn with their pistols, which means you can easily escape during fights.

The enemies in the game are all "human," which means that they don't have absurdly high amounts of health or use insanely powerful abilities the further you get into the game. I feel that this is a plus, since it keeps the game grounded in reality. You can assassinate key targets with ease as long as you play your cards right.

    EXPLORATION
Maps are sufficiently large, but not open-world gigantic. They're kind of designed like Half-Life 2 maps, with that slight apocalyptic feel to it. You can hunt for special items to gain abilities and buffs, but you don't really need them to progress.

Really early on, you're given a map-wide GPS that helps you locate those items, so there's pretty much no guesswork involved. The only difficulty lies in sometimes being unable to find the paths leading to them.

The game has nine total missions, plus a central hub map. If played quickly, it should last around 10 hours of gameplay.

    "KNIFE OF DUNWALL"
This DLC is really nice. I like the rebalancing that was put into this spin-off. The difficulty has ramped up and requires some strategic planning now. Enemies and maps don't feel like a chore to deal with. There are three missions lasting around three hours total, with a boss fight.

Stores no longer exist within maps. Instead, they're available to you before you start a mission. There is a new feature introduced called "Favors", which are very generous bonuses you can buy at cheap prices to improve your next mission's gameplay.

Mana use has been balanced out by making it harder to find potions to restore it. Burning your mana will actually put you at a handicap, making it difficult to play.

Overall, this DLC has been a significant improvement over the main game. The conversations are concise and not filled with pointless dialogue which makes them worthwhile to listen to. I give this DLC a 8/10.

    "BRIGMORE WITCHES"
In this sequel to the Knife of Dunwall, you're allowed to "load" your save game from the previous DLC. The game implies that you'll have a harder time if you load up a "bad reputation" save, but that's not actually true.

Missions are longer this time. The game becomes quite challenging after halfway into the game, and now has more emphasis on sword fights. There are four missions total lasting about five hours, with a boss fight.

It's even harder to find mana potions now and money is scarce. It's very easy to run out of mana and ammunition.

I'll say this DLC is a 7/10. It doesn't really introduce anything new, and the story is okay.

    SUMMARY
Dishonored incorporates many features from popular games, but lacks difficulty. Don't expect serious tactical gameplay because the game is simplified and favours the player. Maps are somewhat large, forcing you to sometimes travel long distances in order to complete objectives. I will give this game an overall 7/10 for having decent combat and map design. It is a good game, but somewhat easy and repetitive.

    - The superpowers, although not particularly creative, are incredibly fun and varied within the context of this gameplay. Blink, in particular, deserves the highest praise in pushing the boundaries of how a stealth game should handle.
    - Solid plot with a few memorable characters. Succeeded in providing enough motive to carry out the assassinations, but not much more than that.
    - Crisp controls that greatly facilitate immersion through gameplay
    - Technically flawless with no hiccups in performance and lightning fast load speeds

    Cons:
    - The middle levels in the game feel a bit slow and too similar to each other.
    - Since the game harshly punishes aggressive play, many of the tools at your disposal simply cannot be used throughout the game
    - Low enemy variety. Vast majority of opponents are guards.
    - Frequently glitchy, making a few quests impossible to complete for no reason.
    - The ending, at least the one I got, felt very anticlimactic and sudden
    - Visual style is passable for the most part, but I can't get over how poor the faces look
    - Would have been nice for characters to respond more differently to your actions. For example, for the most part, nearly nothing different is said when you take out a target non-lethally as opposed to outright killing them.

I played the game when it was first released without the DLCs and the game felt like an unfinished product.

What this game excels at is, being really simple and varied at the same time.

It's not the best stealth game or the best RPG game, but Dishonored combines those two elements and lets you create your own path with many ways to get the job done.

In every mission you must navigate through streets, buildings and roadblocks in order to complete your objective, which usually involves assassinating or kidnapping someone. One of the best things about the game is the replayability due to the ton of choices you are given on how to play the game. For instance you can go full-on Rambo and murder everyone in your way, hide in the shadows waiting for the perfect moment to strike and ithere are also non-lethal routes for those who want to have a peaceful playthrough. The city changes on how you play for instance, if you kill everyone in your path, then the city will have more rats and weepers (zombies) also allies will treat you differently compared to low-chaos playthroughs. -Amazing story and plot.

    - Graphics is unique, with a feel of comical style

    - Combat style and game mechanics is great

    - Every choice you make and how you want to play the game will determined what will happen next in the ending. Probably the best stealth game ive ever played. If you are a fans of stealth game, DISHONORED is a must play for you

Un juego que fue una gran sorpresa, un juego con una variedad increible de situaciones y de formas distintas de jugar la historia esta bien pero el final al igual que su segunda parte es algo flojo. He de incluir que en esta primera parte Corvo es un personaje mudo.

Dishonored is one of the best stealth/action games of all times. Powers make the game really fluid and fast to play keeping the stealth as a major part.

For instance, there are sometimes when you just can't sneakily knock someone out even though you can kill him, some enemies just pop out just when you load a level and they instantly detect you, you pretty much can't fight back if you want a "clean hands" walkthrough because you always end up with a enemy dead from an ally shot... it just isn't that well designed in terms of mechanics.
Level design, on the other hand is quite well done and it gives you enough methods to approach a mission, which makes the game very re-playable.
The story is not anything special, but is well constructed and does it's job.
Overall a game i would have enjoyed far more if the gameplay issues would make my run so frustrating, but i completely recommend it to someone who isn't going to try the "pacific run" as I did.

Ever since I first heard of Dishonored (which was not so far ago) and saw some gameplay videos I was excited. The setting looked interesting and it reminded me a lot of the Thief games which had some solid level design and great atmosphere.

Most reviewers compare Dishonored to Half Life 2 and Bioshock but I'd say it's more of a mix between Thief and Deus Ex. Level design is indeed

Most reviewers compare Dishonored to Half Life 2 and Bioshock but I'd say it's more of a mix between Thief and Deus Ex. Level design is indeed great, better than in say Thief: Deadly Shadows, and on par with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Gameplay mechanics work well, the game always gives you an option to either go stealth or guns (and swords and crossbows) blazing to finish a mission and that's the freedom I like very much. Not only that but your character is also able to use a small number of special powers like a time pausing effect and a sort of infra vision to look through the walls which are granted to him by the mysterious "Outsider". The story is solid and there's even a twist near the end to spice things up a little bit.

Graphics do their job but it's clear Unreal Engine 3 isn't fresh anymore so the game can't keep up with more recent releases in this area. The story itself isn't bad but I think the characters could have been further developed and the twist near the end is a bit obvious as well. Also the story never explains who or what is the mysterious "Outsider" and what is he trying to achieve with helping you which is a shame. The player is also able to get some of the special powers too early in the game, notably infra vision, which makes the first half of the game a bit too easy for my taste. There also could be more of those special powers and it wouldn't hurt if a certain mission called The Flooded District was either made a little bit shorter or replaced entirely because in contrary to all the other missions this one is far more linear and thus boring.

In the end I have to say Dishonored is almost exactly what I was hoping for. It is set in an atmospheric world and has among other things great level design which allows you the freedom to play the game the way you want. Sure it's not without sins, but what game is?

I have ignored this game for almost 2 years. This was because for me, Thief: The Dark Project was simply the best game of that genre.
And then came Dishonored. Well: Thief has found his master.
Why Dishonored is the best game in his genre: 1. There are always several ways to complete a mission 2. There are consequences of your decisions! 3. there are a lot of interesting side quests

And now comes the best part:
    6. there is the DLC

I love games that provide a different perspective on the story and his characters. In Dishonored, you play Corvo, while in the two DLCs "The Knife of Dunwall" and "The Brigmore Witches", you play Daud, the assassin of the Empress. In the DLC you get to know the reasons of Daud. It is clear that he is not a soulless assassin, but has quite comprehensible motives.

Like in Half-Life "Opposing Force" or "Blue Shift" you can experience this game in two perspectives.

If you like Hitman, Splinter Cell and Thief, Dishonored will comfort your gamers soul!

Wonderful, really unique visuals - it takes courage to drop pseudo-realism for this really immersive, well suiting the setting, painting like art style.

But most of all - gameplay is really fun - both stealth and shooting mayhem are valid option - and it gives you reasons to finish game multiple times.

Naturally you’re framed as others are hungry for power…
So the game really starts with you in a jail cell on a rescue mission…
You’ll spend the game crawling through sewers and small cities going after a target in each of the 9 total missions…
These missions last about an hour long highly dependent on your gameplay style which is such a great thing…
Dishonored offers ultimate freedom in the way other assassin games like hitman and assassins creed have lost sight of with their highly suggested stealth design…
Here you get a blade and a pistol… how you get to the end is up to you…
From how you deal with situation to how you infiltrate areas…
There’s multiple passage ways into every section…
You can sneak up behind enemies to assassinate them or put them to sleep…
You can straight up go in guns and swords blazing…
There’s a catch though… the way you play effects the story. The ending and how other characters portray you… You can literally beat the entire game without killing anyone...
While at the same time you can kill almost anyone you want at any time you want
while again you can play anyway you like... I played as an aggressive assassin opposed to a ninja assassin… and I found that this game was definitely designed more for the patient type as the combat feels just a tad bit awkward…
Its bearable, but the rag doll physics, awkward weapon wheel, occasional lack of hit detection, and unrealistic blocking abilities of guards made it apparent combat while an option was an afterthought…
The most annoying thing that stuck out time after time was enemies that are about to shoot you, naturally you’d assume when they are readying their pistol, it’s the perfect opportunity to strike…
But the guards would always.. And I mean always. Instantly block me when I took such a natural and realistic opportunity to deal damage…
That single bit alone hurts hand to hand combat the most as the rest is pretty decent, you can block and parry, dual weald crossbows, guns, and swords…
And if you feel more like going in stealthy, you can also use magic in your ranged weapon hand
all of which can be swapped on the fly
The magic is where the potential shines..
Every mission has runes hidden as well as bone charms… these charms are stat boosts and the runes unlock magic skills of your choice…
You can unlock a dash attack… unlock a skill to see through walls.. Summon rats to eat enemies… just to name a few...
These skills could’ve been used for side quests in the city or platforming sections, but they weren’t... they were just there... much like everything else, optional...
The optional with the magic though is a letdown as there so much imbalance in game progression and this could have helped it
Its constant sneaking around or fighting…
There are no puzzles, no adventure sections to give you a chance to breathe…
It’s a constant walking on eggs shells which ultimately makes this rescue mission feel more like a chore than an immersive duty, despite a handful of side missions actually showing great promise of what this series can become…
Dishonored definitely has its flaws, but it also has potential and is a must play for any fan of the stealth genre
    I give Dishonored an 8.0/10

The architecture and character model design has very unique hand painted attributes and compliments the game quite well. This game seems to be heavily inspired by Thief from the early 2000s and in many ways has done an excellent job in keeping its spirit alive.

You play as Corvo Attano, the royal bodyguard to Empress Jessamine. You return in time to be able to at least put a stake in the spokes of the plan to over throw the Empress but ultimately fail and the fate of Dunwall is on your shoulders as you restore the government from its Dictator, Hiram Burrows. From there you will carve a path to revenge or redemption, it is the players choice. The levels you traverse are decently sized, open ended and filled pretty nicely with hidden loot and runes/ bone charms to upgrade with. You can also ignore all of your powers for a flesh and steel run if that's what you prefer. Seriously, Dishonored is an amazing game that lets you really get creative with all the weapons and powers you have at your disposal. My only gripe is that they didn't get Mr. Russell to voice Corvo originally.

I was very disappointed with this game. It has nice artistic design and very good audio but the gameplay becomes boring really quickly (for me it was 4 hours). You become so overpowered in chapter one that the enemies are no threat even on the highest difficulty but if you don't take the upgrades gameplay becomes even worse, because you limit your options. Overally huge disappointment for me :/

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was really good up until the end of the "Lady Boyle's Last Party" mission. The mission after that ("Return to the Tower") where you have to assassinate the Lord Regent was somewhat predictable, accept for the twist with the broadcast.

From "The Flooded District" (the third last mission out of nine missions) the game degraded a lot in my opinion. I spent hours in the sewers and flooded district, wandering around levels that were so dark that I could not see where I was going, even with the gamma adjusted. The "enhanced eyes" spell did not help either. The story line also became very boring, and it seems pointless and tacked on at that point. That bit about you having to recover your weapons was completely unnecessary and a waste of time in my opinion.

I think the first 6 missions were brilliant, and the game should have ended there. My prediction for Dishonored 2 is that it will be a lot like Deus Ex, where the first game was brilliant and the rest was just more of the same.

It adds replay value to a stealth game and also gives the player the chance to not play stealth one play through, just utter chaos.

I started a stealth style play through but after the first mission I was past the point of salvation. It was to much fun to pass up the destruction that the "High Chaos" play through brings.
Everything seems to click and feel right in Dishonored; The upgrades to weapons and powers and discovery of runes and bone charms add another layer of customization to your Corvo
There are some things I disliked or think could be worked on. Of the assassin tools, Grenades and Springrazor traps felt undervalued and didn't really bring much use to gameplay. With the heaps of whale oil around to use as a explosive, the grenade seemed pointless. Graphically the brightness tuner of the game can be worked on. The game was either too dark to see anything behind boxes/crates or too bright to where the "shadows" felt like I wasn't hidden. I couldn't seem to get achieve a happy medium.

Everything Bioshock Infinite went for as far as art style, mood, charisma, mistique, is all vastly superior in this game. Playing with a quality pc with a slightly recent Nvidia GTX series graphics card, and the opening sequence, one word, water, there goes my brain. Story is great so far. Breaking out of prison was very well made and thought through. Bought this for 5$ on the recent Steam sale. Best $5 I've ever spent. Well worth 20$ or 30$ even this far after it's release for the standard edition. Expand
