With its combination of rich character and ability design and the smooth way it integrates rolling and manipulating dice, it’s proven an addictive presence. The original Italian Renaissance art style is the finishing touch that drives home Dice Gambit’s unique style and approach, even if it does outstay its welcome. Excited as I am to see where the developers and the game go next, I’m off to try a new run where, whenever dice are spent, all remaining dice are rerolled. Crazy! But hey, this is the way Lady Luck dances; let’s roll the bones.

The fact that this is from a small team is itself amazing, and if you enjoy anything from the gorgeous art to the description of the mechanics to even just the feel of being the family head trying to whip your clan into a fighting force? I think you’ll find something to love in Dice Gambit. I sure as heck did. I took a chance I didn’t expect to, and I feel it was well worth it.

Dice Gambit is a turn-based tactical roguelike that combines combat on a hex grid with family management. Each member of the family belongs to a different class and can evolve with active and passive skills, but Stamina decreases with each mission, forcing constant turnover. Death is permanent, and the loss of a relative can jeopardize the lineage's expansion, forcing a balance between rest and deployments. Combat is good, with various combos to execute with dice, but the graphical representation of heroes and enemies in battle is less so, as they are rather anonymous.

Dice Gambit can be a creative strategy game, though it is one that relies heavily on luck and repetition.
