I like the new skill system, rune effects effects are cool also, and the number of possible skill combinations is decent as well. Even the story, though simple, improves the impression you get in the end. Talking about dissapointments: no skill trees anymore, so lack of character customization. Auction house with real money sales will kill the game based solely on items stats. Misuc is lousy, and most of the time you feel like there is none at all. And the graphics could have been better. Would be the best if you don't use zoom at all. And now, the final flaw: logging int this game in normal hours (from after working hours till sleep time) is far from possible, lags can be terrible as well while you luckily log in. This game is not cheap,so the availability problems can really play on nerves sometimes.

All in all: this is a good game. Not great, not lame. Good piece of work, although not worth the legend it posess.

I think Diablo is the game of the year

Not only because it has amazing graphics but for its history, for being so long, its difficulty

That itself is a Diablo and the people who complain because they do not play enough at Diablo 2

I just don't get how people are sooo angry with D3... I actually hardly believe they really played the game more than 10 minutes...

I played Diablo II thousands of hours. I played Median XL Hardcore up to the point I was bored loosing 200h+ character and starting again at Act 1 with the possibility to die level 10 in the first quest... In what is Diablo 3 so sub-par? I don't see in

I played Diablo II thousands of hours. I played Median XL Hardcore up to the point I was bored loosing 200h+ character and starting again at Act 1 with the possibility to die level 10 in the first quest...

In what is Diablo 3 so sub-par? I don't see in any of those red dots providing any real reason.

Let's think about it for a second...

You cannot attribute skill points: SO WHAT? You play a Mage in D2? You put everything in Vitality and Mana and that's it. You save some points in case of a looted item requires some strenght or dexterity. Ok... Is that mineblowing experience? NO IT'S NOT, IT'S JUST USELESS.C'mon... Let's stop joking. It was just boring... Miserable argument.

"Naaah Diablo 3 suxxxx, You only have 6 skills + 3 passive while in Diablo 2 you had so many (from F1 to F12)". You NOOBS!!!! In Diablo 2, you had 120 skill points (a bit more with the quests). If you put points here and there, you die. You had to put all the points in, guess how many skills since you can put maximum 20 points in one skill?? 6 Skills!!! Oh my God!!!!! It is less than Diablo 3... So again a miserable argument... And actually Diablo 3 skill system is much better. According to your loot you will change your skills and you actually REALLY use your 6 active skills, which is far more than Diablo 2 where you used maybe 2 or 3 active skills, the rest being passive.

What more???? "ho it's not challenging". Ok, vanilla D3 wasn't at all. Got a point. However since the 2.2 patch it is challenging. As a Hardcore player, it really is... As in Diablo 2 Median XL, make a single mistake, you're just dead. It is as challenging as Diablo 2 Median XL, the challenge just comes a couple of 10 hours later.

"Yeah yeah, you can choose your difficulty", but in Nephalem Rifts you cannot... And the whole point in the game is that one. Nephalem rifts, getting harder and harder, as in Diablo 2.

"Diablo 3 is just like farming over and over". C'moooon BULL***T!!!!! Diablo 2 it was the same. With all of my friends we did hours of farming since Median XL is extremely difficult... I remember farming the Sewers in Act 2 (in Normal difficulty already...) for hours: even less rewarding than Nephalem Rifts.

The game however is not perfect. You can play max at 4 which is really something they could avoid. You cannot trade objects, even if playing a private game. However it still makes sense, since D3 can be very challenging the affixes of the items are made so that it fits with your class. No reason to trade then. In the end, yes, you play the way Blizzard wants you to play. But I'm fine with it.

I love opening the game when I have 20m free, opening a rift, empty it with the same adrenaline rush I had in Median XL. Kill the boss, feel relaxed, looking at the loot, optimize, shut down my computer. In this, Diablo 3 is just perfect. It reallt fitts my needs.

Yes hardcore players play 2000h+ do rifts level 50+, but there really is place for casual gamers as I am now, as I just mentionned, you can play for 20m and go. Which something you couldn't do in Diablo 2. You start playing Diablo2, you need to play hours.

Awesome game, I love how I don't have to read quests and all the NPC actually talk!!! I really like the story line and you don't need to get a masters degree in order to play this game.

Best game since Diablo 2 in the genre. Beats all the boring clones with one hand, provides breathtaking atmosphere, mindblowing physics engine and brilliant visual style (yes, i know graphics outdated). Have spent 156 hours playing it and every minute was worth it. Haters gonna hate.

The game is lacking in certain aspects such as a more in depth crafting system and there are fixes needed for things like loot drops (getting an intelligence bow while playing a barbarian is kind of dumb), as well as the randomly generated maps for dungeons. If you've played through the game once or twice, then you'll basically have an idea as to where to do in a dungeon to speed through it. The games length is on a reasonable scale, clocking in 10-15 hours depending on your play style, and as you increase the difficulty, many more hours will be put into the game (hell mode is where many players will start to find it incredibly hard including myself). The game overall is a good game, solid mechanics as well as an alright story. The drop in drop out multiplayer is outstanding, allowing you to join friends or randoms at any point of their game, or any chapter which you want to work on. If you want a dungeon crawler where eventually you'll need to grind out for some levels to really get through the game solo and don't mind working the auction house system for some better loot (once the prices finally adjust properly), then Diablo 3 is the game for you. But if you don't like the loot drop system or the difficulty curve for second or third time play throughs, maybe this game isn't for you. Expand

All you Zero voters dont deserve to be called gamers. Why would any company want to make a game for the likes of you.

Wow, blizzard has THE worst fanbase I've ever seen. countless people give it 0/10, for what? "waaaahh, there's millions of people trying to log into this game at the same time and it's not working perfectly, HOW DARE YOU BLIZZARD!" really? Are you all that juvenile as to rate a game 0/10 just because it didn't perform perfectly ON OPENING DAY?

Soundtrack. excellent, couldn't be better. (10/10)

The skill system. People are complaining about the "lack of customization" of the skills, which is a load of crap. you can have countless combinations of spells and runes then you could in D1 or D2 and if you think so otherwise you're not playing the game right. (9/10)

The Story. I have to say the story isn't as enticing as the first 2 installments, but it isn't bad by any means. (6/10)

The only truly bad thing about this game is the DRM, I don't agree with it and it causes more problems than it fixes.

If you don't like it stop playing, but know you will be giving up one of the best games of the year. This game is not meant for single player, a lot of reviews say normal is too easy, normal is mostly a tutorial where you get your skills, play inferno and tell me it's too easy. The graphics are perfect I'd say. Blizzard is known for making games that run on all sorts of rigs, they don't require you to buy a new computer to play their new games and I do appreciate that. This is just as addictive as I remember D2 being. THIS IS NOT D2. The "lack of customization" is more of a "fixed a glaring problem in D2" where when a patch came out, your character was worthless. This is a hack and slash more than a RPG in the sense of story. If you want a story read the lore, loot the journals, Blizzard has excellent writers but an in depth story in your face does not work in a fast paced action game. I know I will spend countless hours on this game, as will most people who are crying on here about how hard or easy or bad or overpriced the game is. This is a multiplayer game and the sooner people realize that the more they will enjoy it. Tanks are key.

TL;DR: Deal with the DRM this game is an excellent way to kill countless hours.

Amazing game... aside from tech issues that should hopefully be resolved soon, don't let the low user review scores steer you away if you are a Blizzard fan... however, don't expect WoW or SC2... I thought it was only decent until I really started experimenting with the classes and leveling more and more...
it is super addictive, and beautiful if u can customize the graphics to suit ur machine.

They were great games... 12 years ago. While I'm not a HUGE fan of server side DRM, with the amount of software piracy going on in the world today it's quickly becoming the only way to be sure the pirates can't get at you. For the actual game, It's new. Period. That means what class? Bugs, hiccups and the standard, just released the game non-sense that happens in EVERY GAME. Yet still we see the armies of twelve year old kids flocking to the review sites to **** They're working out the kinks and as of the time I write this they have most of them ironed out, the game is only sixteen days old, what can you expect? Now for my review!

Graphics: I've heard A LOT of kids whining that it looks too cartoony, that it looks just like wow that it's too this or too that. The game looks fine, graphics are good considering the type of game, it's hard to get Skyrim graphics into an angled down RPG hack and slash. But when you're going into the maw of the abyss there's plenty of bodies, blood and torture devices to give you that "Yeah I'm about to meet something angry, aren't I?" feel. 9/10

Gameplay: Every D2 fan has been on the forums at the site ****ing because it's "Nothing like diablo 2" well it's a sequel kids, it's not supposed to feel like an expansion pack. It's a new game all together. You only have six buttons to memorize and manipulate to your liking but while that sounds like a bad thing, it actually makes it easier to focus in on the important things like smashing hundreds of baddies in a couple amazing moves. It's addicting and you'll find yourself hard pressed to not keep playing if you give it half a chance instead of comparing it to something it isn't. 10/10(Yes D2 Fanbois I hear you crying, shut up, it's a good game.)

Storyline: Painfully linear. Here's the problem, the guy who wrote the story for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Or at least had a hefty hand in it, (The guy who made Thrall an uber god like shaman and basically all the dragon aspects in one.) had a hand in writing this so there are moments of, "Seriously..? Wtf..." from time to time. There's only one really good plot twist and as a writer I felt it could've been better. However the Lore attached to the game, collectibles found in game that give you back story and detailed info on monsters and characters from the game, is amazing. Very detailed including journals of people who players of the first two games would recognize. 5/10(Could've been better... but it could've been A LOT worse considering.)

Overall: While the game has it's faults, DRM specifically and bad writing in places, what it lacks in polished glory it makes up for in sheer fun and overall challenge. Keep in mind that if you are a Diablo 2 fan that Diablo 2 has had 12 years to polish itself, iron out all the kinks, apply patches to provide balance and stability to gameplay as well as just patches to make the game better and more fun. When it first hit the shelves it was a damned menace and hell on your system as well as your mind trying to figure out why the heck it was doing what it was doing. D3 has only been out for a little over two weeks, not twelve years. So they're ironing out the kinks still but for the most part it's still a lot of fun. If you're not a D2 fan but instead an RPG fan of say... WoW tastes or Skyrim or perhaps even Final Fantasy... this game will feel extremely simple to you. But give it a chance and much like Bejeweled you'll find yourself hours later going "Damn I need to eat and go to work or I'll be late!" Bottom Line, it is a good game, it's a ton of fun to play with or without friends and if you're one of those who's looking for a challenge in your games. Hardcore Inferno will have you entertained for quite awhile. (For those who don't know the terms, Hardest difficulty on a mode where if you die, you have to start all over on the first difficulty again. Sounds rough? Yeah... it is.) Honestly the only bad thing about this game currently is that it's story isn't as epic or grand as say... Final Fantasy or Skyrim. But if you're looking for a simple, fun game to waste nine hours of your life smashing hordes of baddies for gems, gear and gold, this is the game for you! 9/10

That means blizzard up the stakes and made D3 a little more challenging. Some things where blizzard could improve. - Chat system would be very nice. D2 didn't need one but collaboration in gaming has changed over the years. - maybe every two months they could upload some new events or change the events. I know there are a lot but I would enjoy some surprising new battles. Other than that I think this game is an excellent buy and has more replay value then any other game that came out this year. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played 100+ hours of this game on Hardcore mode. Leveled each class to at least 30+ (except Wizard).

Here is a pro and con list that I've compiled:

    Pros

    1. Skills and runes are varied.

    2. The affixes for monsters are cool and interesting.

    3. Hardcore mode was included.

    4. The sound bites of lore.

    5. Achievements. 6. The banner that you can customize.

    7. Armor dye.

    8. More gem grades (more than D2).

    9. Cool cinematics.

    Cons

    1. A lot of the skills and runes seem worthless compared to others.

    2. Players can receive credit and quest experience while sitting in town.

    3. The checkpoint system is easily exploited. For instance, players can repeatedly farm the same rare monster pack if it's subsequent to a checkpoint.

    4. The art direction is a little too over-the-top. In other words, too WoWish, with the big hands, shoulders, etc. I'd prefer it if Diablo 3 were a little more bleak and realistic looking. The monsters in this game look evil, but they're evil in a silly over-the-top way, not in a "holy #&#@ that thing is actually scary" kind of way.

    5. The story is juvenile as well as predictable.

    6. The voice acting is too over-the-top and the lines are, again, juvenile. Not all of it, but a good portion. For example, "You will never defeat me! Rawr!" - Skeleton King. Come on now. The Skeleton King in the original Diablo was much more intimidating and scary.

    7. Game is too short. In an age where games like Skyrim exist, this is unacceptable.

    8. The music is forgettable, and the way it is blared in the cinematics is annoying. The only song I liked was the reimagined Tristram theme in the first act.

    9. Followers can't be used in multiplayer games.

    10. A lot of times, there are too many effects, monsters and stuff on the screen all at once in multiplayer games.

    11. Itemization in its entirety is less interesting and simpler in D3 than D2. "I'm a Witch Doctor; therefore, I concentrate on intelligence (DPS) and vitality, derp. All done." And the items are equally uninteresting. Then there are the horrendous drops. Does Magic Find even work? Finally, legendaries seem too rare and are not powerful enough.

    12. Wizards running around with two handed axes and Barbarians with daggers. In other words, classes, for the most part, do not restrict which items you can or cannot use.

    13. Male wizard looks like a pansy while the female wizard looks fine.

    14. No way to search for players to look at their items, achievements, and characters. You can only look at the profiles of players who you've recently played with--or your friend's. 15. The time it takes to get to 60 is too short. 16. No PKing. And by PK, I mean actual PKing, not World of Warcraft battlegrounds and Arena (but as of now we don't even have that). 17. Matchmaking as opposed to a readily available list of public games where you can select exactly which game you want to join like in D2. 18. Having to listen to the same lines of dialogue and play through the same story events over and over again even though you're at the point where you've experienced it all before and is now only interested in leveling and itemization. 19. The servers are too unstable for a game that is online only. 20. Feminine-looking Diablo. Why did they do this? I don't know, but it looks stupid.

It appears they tried to do both, resulting in a very simplistic and hand-holding beginning - being limited to exploring only the areas related to the quest you were on. - removal of any semi-permanent decision making.
But then designed the later stages (hell / inferno) with such difficulty that only the most dedicated could progress, which sadly left little for the inbetweens - who couldn't handle the difficulty but desired to play more.
The lack of a difficulty settings is felt rather heavily due to this.

The story is quite a bit more visible than in the previous games, however once you know the story it only serves to break the game-flow.
The graphics are great, the abilities often feel satisfying with little screen shakes on big attacks and the music and voices are good.
Besides the minor server bugs at release due to capacity, which have now disappeared as fewer are playing, and outside of a single in town DC (probably on my end) I've experienced no crashes or graphical bugs.
A pity they didn't implemented a queue system to log in for the launch.

A quality game none the less, for some more than others.

Review as of May 2014 by a non-fanboy who never played Diablo nor Diablo 2. I think maybe the closest game I've played to this was Dungeon Siege I & II back in the day.

In Diablo 3 you only have 1 AI follower at a time, except if you play with friends, but even then, the gameplay boils down to INFINITE grinding and looting. The different classes have some depth, but you'll eventually find your favourite 4 active skills and 3 passive skills and there's little incentive to change your play style, especially on higher difficulties where you need to be fast and precise and not be burdened by experimenting around. Nevertheless, the combat is ok, the 4 active skills you can choose at a time (from a wider offer which you keep unlocking as you level up) provide some strategy opportunity, but really it comes down to either you can kill the monsters or you need to escape and lower the game difficulty. The different locations are really not particularly interesting, and the progress through them is very linear. The story and its presentation is SHOCKINGLY poor! It's basically a poor excuse to allow to unlock new paths (always very linear, btw) and keep progressing. Progressing? I should say keep grinding and looting. And the allure of looting better stuff can only motivate you so much.

There is not much lore, interesting side quests, characters or really RPG elements other than combat stats. If you expect an adventure with an interesting story and characters, you'll find none of this, I fear. Instead, this boils down to infinite grinding of monsters. Even with such a major change to the way you use abilities from the previous installment, the point remains that Diablo 3 is as fun to play as I had hoped. It isn't perfect but I'm having fun and I suspect it'll keep me sated for years to come.

While there are some plot holes, the game largely holds true to the previous titles in the series with some great improvements. I love the skill trees, the ability to switch up how you play the game on the fly allows for great flexibility, particularly when the game seems to difficult to play. Often, the problem can be solved by tweaking your skills. It presents a fun dynamic of getting stuck and then figuring out how to get your self unstuck. I love the visuals, while not quite as dark and scary as previous titles, I love the look and feel of the game. I even like the auction house. I do not have that much time to play, although I have put in upward of 50 hours, so being able to quickly find items to keep my character relevant is easy and fun.

In my opinion, most of the people that are deriding this game are people without much life outside of gaming. It makes me sick to see some people dismissing this game so easily and vociferously. Get a life, I say.

If you're the least bit interested, I would recommend giving it a try. I love it and can see myself playing it for many years.

Check the last 10 pages or so of reviews to get a more evenly balanced view. Ive played the entire franchise and this definitely carries on the tradition. Looks great, sounds great. You may have to get used to the new skill/rune system but once you figure it out you'll see that it enables a great variety in builds. Far more than previous versions. This game hasn't gone down so well with the crowd the expects 'BIS" and "end game". Somehow many players (while claiming to be Diablo fans from way back) miss the point that farming lower levels for gear upgrades was always part of Diablo. There was never any end-game other than beating Diablo (or Baal) and becoming more and more powerful. Diablo 3 makes looking for gear even more rewarding with random events and more champion mobs. The beginning levels are easy, but the challenges present themselves in the later acts where you get greater variety of affixes on the mobs that will be challenging or near impossible. If you are a hardcore (one death, your character is gone) player, Diablo 3 is even better as there is built-in shared stash between characters as well as crafting which lower level or new characters can access. So even if you die there is still progression in some aspects. no more "mules"

If you are a casual player, it appears to be going very well with that segment as well. Easy to enjoy at the lower level difficulties, try a few classes and then move on. Well worth $60 as you will get 100's of hours of gameplay.

Not sure why the 'online only" seems to be affect so many people. I only ever played "online" in D2 anyway to participate in the HC ladders and play with friends on battle.net anyway. It was done to counter all the previous issues with dupes and hacks. Honestly Ive seen far more draconian "DRM", this is not it. It's especially odd since online play is pretty much a required aspect of any multi-player game nowadays.

So in summary, still loving the game, glad to part of a new journey of Diablo, plenty of content to come.

Diablo 3 is a game that was destined to be loved by critics and hated by many fans. The reason for this is that it actually is a fantastic game when viewed somewhat objectively, but can be viewed as too much of a departure from Diablo 2 by those who gaze upon that game with rose tinted glasses.

The fact is that Diablo 3 improves upon many aspects of Diablo 2. Concerns such as art direction and character development and permanence that were frequently expressed prior to release are no longer concerns. Though this could possibly be due to the prominence of other concerns, I think it's more likely because these are no longer concerns. Sure there are no more stat points, but they are replaced by the process of gear selection. No more permanent build choices, but the rune system is far more compelling and allows more experimentation and customization. I think the majority of current concerns from the playerbase stem from 2 things: the difficulty of the game and the perception of the AH and the Real Money Auction House. Diablo 2 never really made an attempt to be difficult; it could be beaten around level 60, but if you didn't have the skill or gear to do this, you could always level higher and beat it using your superior level. Diablo 3 doesn't have this option; once you hit max level you are presented with a whole "Hell" equivalent just for max level characters. Therefore, you have to be skilled or have great gear to beat it. This is a cource of frustration for many: Blizzard upon release stated that Inferno would be only for the hardcore players; but the truth is that if it is there, players will feel they haven't beaten the game until they've beaten it. This brings me to the 2nd perception which is the AH/RMAH. The problem with these is that in order to have a challenging game, the Inferno balance decisions must assume the best gear in the game, because this gear is obtainable in the AH. In Diablo 2 there was no such medium for trading; everything was done on fan site forums so there was no real way to see how your gear compared to the world at large. This leads to the perception that most of the gear that players find is crap, and that you have to obtain our gear on the AH to do well. This also frustrates many players. However, if you like a challenging game, neither of these complaints really bothers you.

I've spent a lot of time countering criticism that I see, but the game really is great. Superb artwork and art direction. The story/voice acting is not the best, but honestly I've failed to be impressed by these aspects in many games, including full blown RPG's like Mass Effect. Diablo 2's strength is the heart pounding action, and this game delivers on that.

Whats happened in diablo three is that blizzard tried to take the series in a new direction. Which is what the second diablo did, but kept with what made diablo one so great and that was the ablity to put skill points into verying skill trees which would change how the game played out. How diablo three does it is by using a system like WoW in which most skills and attributes are gained as one levels. So basically to make the game harder and in their minds to create more replay value. Which the only thing it really does is make people either farm for a certain point in the game in which their character gets one shoted at the very beginning of the level. Or to try and play through another few times to see what other loot comes with a higher difficulty. Which leads into the other issue diablo 3 has, its difficulty sittings are for force play. Just like the characters blizzard is trying to make it have more replay value but it doesn't pan out. If you've played the first two games you can plainly see through the story and basically know the ending by the end of the first level. For anyone else who is just now joining the series you probably won't get it until later on. Over all the game in itself is good, the art work that blizzard is known for shines and the game play is good. But it isn't a diablo game. If anything it should have been marketed as a different game since the only real connection between this game and its predecessor is the cookie cuter story. If they had changed the name and created a whole new series then I'd give it a 8 out of 10. But since its supposed to be diablo and the soul of it has been changed so that collections of new players can enjoy it more. It gets a 5 out of 10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Diablo 3 is hard to review. The area where this game really shines is its combat. The combat is so fluid and satisfying, it really saves the game.

As for the other elements: I didn't like the story or the mood of the game. It certainly isn't as dark as Diablo 2, sometimes it even feels childish, especially how the evil protagonists are presented to you.
What really annoyed me is the amount of dialogue. Out of nowhere they talk to you, tease you and try to intimidate, but I never felt some kind of horror or fear. The game fails hard in this regard.
The story is foreseeable, never exciting and all in all it doesn't really fit the Diablo setting. There are also some rather strange deciscion, especially when it comes to Deckard Cain. What happened to him doesn't add anything to the story or game world, but the franchise has lost its most iconic character. What's the point in this? I mean, maybe they have a long term plan when it comes to the story and someday it will make sense, but somehow I doubt this.

The new skill and character system is so easy and dumbed down, it doesn't promote "real" builds or great thought processes. But I won't blame it everything, a big player in this mess is also the item system, which just isn't complexe enough to encourage players to come up with new builds.

There are other things which people do not like, for example the real money auction house or the auction house in general. I am not a huge fan of it either, but nowhere is it the biggest problem of the game.

This price goes to the following: Blizzard is known for supporting its games with regular content. Diablo 3 is different in this way. There hasn't been any "real" content besides the uber bosses since its release, and even that is blatantly stolen from Diablo 2. I mean, they tried to change the game in so many ways, and now they come up with...this? It's not that the system about the uber bosses is bad or anything, it is just disappointing that the new team doesn't have its own ideas where it would be really appropriate, but changes things that worked really well, like the whole character and skill system.
So, for me this is the biggest problem I have with this game: The lack of new content. And Diablo 3 is desperatley in need of some new mechanics that make this game more diverse. Be it an endless dungeon system like in Torchlight, or the map system like in Path of Exile, the Diablo 3 fails to implement exciting new ways on how to play. Sure, Diablo 2 doesn't have that either, but it has a ladder system and offers a ton of different builds. Diablo 3 doesn't have that and so it needs regular, new content to keep the masses interested. So therefore I never understood why they do not come up with DLCs or something similar, because judging from the lack of content it is obvious that the real money auction house fails to monetise on the game.

Conclusion: I still have hope for Diablo 3, but it will be a long road for Blizzard 'till this game is anywhere near Diablo 2 in terms of fun and replayability. Until then it will be a mindless grind for gear with better stats.

Other companies i prove the game, but Blizzard are fifferent and make it worse..

More bad: always online DRM in single player, inconsistency of atmosphere, nothing special about new locations (another boring desert? Seriously?). Hopefully the designers of the next game will realize there are more important things to a game than just changing the interface and general gameplay. 5/10 Expand

This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

    What They Did Right:
Treasure - Diablo's all about treasure hunting for me looking for the final item of a set, a new weapon for one of your chars, etc.
Battle - This version retains the "arcadeyness" of previous versions with no camera control - isometric view. On the ps3, this frees-up the left joystick for evasive maneuvers which make the battle feel of D3 the best so far.

    What they Did wrong:
Dumbed-down-to-one - Nearly all strategy has been taken out of the game. There are no decisions in character building making every character the same. Once you level a monk (for instance) to level 60, there's no need to play another, you'll just have another maxed-out copy of the first--maybe with slightly different gear. In the D2 days you had to decide where to spend your points and your decisions had a direct effect on the potency of the leveled character. I miss this. If there was a subtitle to this game it should be "Diablo for Dummies".

No more runes - In D3 you have only gems to put in your socketed equipment. Just 4 choices--topaz, emerald, amethyst, and ruby. Boooo!

All and all I'm having a great time vanquishing scores of demons and scooping up madd loot.
I've reached Paragon in hardcore (after a few failed attempts) and suspect I'll be jamming this game for a few more months until I "switch gears" to concentrate on GTA V (which is waiting on the shelf).

I am a fan of the Diablo series and I can say I very much enjoy what Diablo 3 has to offer. The game play is great and stays true to the hack and slash RPG I fell in love with years ago. I would say 80% of the negative reviews on here are the launch day server issues. While understandably frustrating for many, it is no reason to pout and make a good game look horrid to future players.

In all honesty, this is my first Diablo game and enjoyed the first 40 hours with my friends, but realized I wasn't getting anything back for my time. The legendaries and good loot wouldn't be enough for me (Sorcerer) to be viable in the ene game content compared to other classes. When you've done all the statues and main story, things fall off after level 70 because you're left with nothing new to do. Tree of Whispers becomes repetitive, world bosses don't spawn enough, helltides are now bugged. Changes have been made, and if you really are dedicated to the Diablo franchise and a fan of hack-n-slash games, then you stuck around to witness the evolution. Those patient enough are now experiencing patch updates being released as large chunks of a would-be expansion pack that the developers decided to give the players for free, because they're grateful that through all of the craziness, we stayed.

I urge all of you who are on the fence about this game to take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. I have played this game since day 1 as a pre-purchaser, and I still play this game...more than any other game currently in my catalog. If you're curious about Diablo 3 - the time to get is now. On the schedule of roughly every 90 days, we've received fresh, new content updates and patches. Albeit terrible to some but exceptional to others - but how will you ever know who is right if you never play?

This game certainly had issues when it launched, but with the expansion and a ton of patches with new content the game has actually become quite good. 6 different unique classes to play with, tons of cool gear that changes how abilities work, and much more end game content made Diablo 3 able to take the number 1 spot as the worlds best farming simulator.

While its story is mediocre at best its visual design is exceptional and its gameplay is well above average. Admittedly Diablo 3 should have been better and suffers from some pretty big flaws but that isn't to say it doesn't do a lot of things really well.

Gameplay is mostly great. Each class is unique and there are tons of spells to choose from. I found playing as a Witch Doctor to be very different from playing as a Barbarian or Wizard and that variety makes playing with friends that much more fun. Whether it be summoning exploding dogs or raining poison toads on your enemies there are tons of fun and creative abilities to unleash upon your enemies. Throughout the entire campaign I was always unlocking new and interesting abilities and getting to try them in different situations. Almost all the abilities seemed fairly well balanced and useful. All of the menus were intuitive and navigation throughout the game was simple. I would have liked to see a bit more interactivity in terms of using abilities to solve puzzles though. While combat is fun it does eventually get quite monotonous and in a game where you are expected to play through many times it should have offered more variety. Being able to easily change the build of my characters also seemed dumb down the experience of trying to optimize your characters. Looting was also undermined by a system that almost forces you to buy equipment with real money, largely killing the reward of finding good loot in game.

The story is definitely worse than past Diablo games. It starts off pretty good but the further it gets the more it starts to seem like something a teenager would write. The Angels and Demons who seemed to be deep and complex in Diablo 2 now seem like a bunch of petty children. Tyrael, who once epitomized the idea of a wise, idyllic being, has now been reduced to a whiny directionless stereotype who is incapable of doing anything without the help of humans who should be far less experienced and less capable than he is. I could have understood that take on the character at the start of the game but once he regains his memories he becomes even more pathetic. The story also has huge inconsistencies. For example, the final boss is supposed to have the power of nearly all the other bosses combined, yet it is actually one of the easier battles. It was like no thought was put into how powerful each demon should be from a story perspective. None of the characters seem to have any motivation beyond saving the world or destroying it. Diablo 2 had pitch perfect story telling full of intrigue, horror and implied depth. Diablo 3's story is a generic B movie by comparison. The story is no worse than a Mario game but only a little bit better which is terribly sad.

The visual design is top notch. Everything is clean, the models and textures are all appealing and interesting. There are dozens of cool looking monsters and spells. Every environment looks great and the cinematic are easily among the best I have seen. What else can I say, Blizzard does great art and this is one of their best looking games.

The Sound Design is also quite good. Some of the voice acting seemed a bit cartoony but that was more a problem with the script than it was with the voices themselves. The music and sound effects were both solid. It's not one of the best soundtracks I have heard but all of the music fit nicely and in never took me out of the experience even after multiple playthroughs.

Ultimately I think Diablo 3 is a really fun game that just failed to fulfill the vision that its predecessors inspired. While there were many things about the game that I thought could have been better, I enjoyed playing it enough that I played through it multiple times. The story certainly wasn't great and seemed to have a totally different tone than Diablo 2 but with that said it isn't a worse story than that of most action games.

    I give Diablo 3 a 78%

Terrible game, completly boring and nothing inventional. I've really tried hard to play atleast 100~hrs, but i just quit after 70~hrs, the story is so dumb, builds boring, itemization sucks and crawls in s**te. Really, i do not recommend.

I have played the singleplayer campaign (Act 1 to 4).

It was actually fun but the game is much shallower than D2R. D3 does not have this mysterious, dark atmosphere that D2R has. It is more like an Arcade game. Graphics are very good for a 2012 game, but too colorful for my taste. Looks like WoW. Gameplay is fun, there's tons of skills to choose from. But overall, quite

It's amazing how Blizzard was capable of getting a good game like Diablo 2 and turning it into this. Diablo 3 is a bag of disappointments and boring gameplay. Skip this and pray that ActivisionBlizzard will not repeat the same mistakes on Diablo 4.

It looks definetely perfect even after all those years. This is definetely my best isometric hack'n'slash rpg game. Everything is so balanced, fighting is so much fun. Looking forward for Diablo IV!

One of my favourite games on PC because fantasy and epic adventure stories have been always my passion. Could understand some points of disappointment from users about this game, but I don´t think is so terrible as they say. I consider graphics and playability good enough for new players as me, and cinematic scenes looks like a Hollywood movie. Simply amazing. Nothing has to say more about than this game is simply the best hack‘n slay loot dungeon crawler which was ever made. Every on this concept like gameplay and loot system seems to be perfectly balanced. The end game is so deep that this game will easily makes the same fun to play just after 8 years.

    Since this season crashes gallore.
Seasons dont really add anything new to the game. Season journey give you enough stuff to do for 2 days - after this you quit for 3 months until the next season starts.

what's the point of reviewing this game in the tail-end of 2023? well, just to add my voice to the choir after what seems to be another lesson not learned by Blizzard.

    When this game came out, I was excited! I loved D1 & D2. they were iconic and impactful in their day and then comes along D3 which changes the feel and style of the game to some kind of cartoon. I loved the cinematics;

I loved the cinematics; Blizzard seems to have nailed those down to perfection. the story was a bit weak and not very interesting but hey... it's Diablo. that wasn't the strong suit anyway though it would've been nice to get something more out of this game aside from the lottery hook & sinker.

there's no one glaring reason why Diablo 3 isn't as popular or good as D2 or even remembered as D1. it's a combination of poor decisions and ignoring players.

As a hardcore player I was very dismayed at launch and didn't actually finish or play the game for more than a day at launch due to the numerous issues plaguing it. the always online BS especially.
I have dipped my toes in from time until a few months after launch when I started playing more and have since sunk a lot of hours into it. but as any HC player my Hall of fallen heroes is filled more by HC characters dying to server issues and game balancing issues than any 'real' death and in my opinion this very big issue for HC was never fixed.

Apart from that, it's very clear they didn't think about post campaign gameplay as there is none. you just do the same things over and over. without going into the details and why their additions to the game didn't really work just know you'll essentially be doing the same thing, exact same, over and over. combat is mostly unchanged from previous titles and it's all about the numbers and little else.

sadly, by this time at 2023 we know Blizzard learned nothing.

The game is 8 years old at time of review and I only played the demo (but with an open mind) to see if I could get into it. I am also a classic Diablo/Diablo II lover. Now that my biases are out of the way: No challenge, no horror, overpowered characters, too many skills, too much loot; in summary, the lack of any threat or scarcity makes this I would say, a child's game. The art style is also generic Blizzard fantasy fare, ruining the gothic medieval art style which was the soul of Diablo. Mediocre. High action combat and fun combinations of abilities to try out... but that is it. Other than that the game feels slow and repetitive. The combat, even if it looks OK, it feels like your weapon is made out of plastic. you deal minimal damage to everything especially in the early game. On top of that the servers are buggy and keep crushing. Lastly if you do not play the game atMediocre. High action combat and fun combinations of abilities to try out... but that is it. Great game, over 5000 hours played. It's a pity the game was abandoned and not developed.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
