There is nothing wrong with Diablo when you look it at for what it is. It's a basic hack slash, looting, RPG. In that respect, it can be fun. The lack character customization may help casual gamers who purchased the title out of hype, but majority of players buying this game day one are not casual, or were actively looking for a great RPG based on the pedigree of the series. Also, lack of customization limits how invested a player will be in the game. Combine that with dated visuals, and repetitive game play, you have an easily forgettable title that many will drop after a month of play. Simply put, this game was in development so long that the gaming industry blew by it. Expand

Ambience and overall music is great.

    The Bad:

Voice work is AWFUL. Not just the voice acting, but the script itself is very weak. The plot only holds value to those who have played the earlier games.

Difficulty modes have been scaled interestingly and pigeon hole the player into stacking Vitality (HP) doesn't matter what your class is. On the Nightmare mode (difficulty up from Normal) I was one-hit by the first boss, with absolutely amazing gear on. Nothing broken, but playing Demon Hunter with a damage build and if I can't avoid the attacks I die. No more flame builds where the player can torch everything down. Little reward for people who actually know the game and RPG's in general. After I realized the above fact, I turned the game off and returned to Skyrim. No replayability for me and I am a hardcore RPG fan.

Not as good as Diablo 2, but damn near close. In fact I think it's growing on me more and more and may indeed surpass d2 for me at some point. Not really sure what all the (not-so-objective-and-thinly-vieled-trolling) is about, but this game is awesome.

I honestly can't believe how completely bad this is. It's probably mostly just all of the hype that I had for it, but this doesn't live up to D2 in any way, shape, or form. Am I rating it especially low due to my broken expectations? Probably. But oh well.

Having played Diablo, and Diablo II along time ago, I did not really know what to expect from Diablo III, so I'm just gonna narrow down the review as I still haven't fully finished the game, but I've played enough to say with confidence what I think about it in general:
-Game-play : In terms of game-play, this game its the nail on the head for the most part, the controls are easy and responsive, they feel intuitive for the most part, AND they are not hard to master.
You will find yourself enjoying this game at least when it comes to game-play very much.
    ______
[9.0], (Solid game-play let me give this game a 9, as expected in most Blizzard games game-play wise...)
-Content : On the other end the content of the game in terms of skills, attributes and creativity are kind of disappointing, you get a decent amount of skills, but not as many or as diverse as previous Diablo games, the skill tree although SIMPLE, EASY and INTUITIVE, is very lackluster, and it does not leave a whole lot to the imagination.
Crafting feels a bit to simple and brain dead, you basically bring some above-average items to the blacksmith, you salvage them for materials and you upgrade your skill level (buy paying gold) to make more items, that is about it for crafting, AND rune-crafting with a slight difference that you combine gems to make stronger gems...
As for items, there is a high variety of them In-game, and each item feels rather unique to its own, some items are more appropriate for each Class but overall, it does a good job at diversifying what each class can use what items.
You can customize the color of your vestments with a semi-wide variety of choices between colors, and effects, you can also bind them with gems to make them stronger, overall the item variety seems fine to me, having played through a lot of it by myself the loot feels just right, not to much, but not to little, just fine.
I have played for about 5/6 hours or so, and I still don't feel like the plot is at its end, so therefore I'm assuming story wise this game delivers a long experience, ALTHOUGH its worth mentioning that I like exploring a lot, and did not rush the game at all, taking my sweet time, there is a lot of instances and small dungeons to visit as you are going through the locations of the main plot, which is of course expected and welcomed.
In terms of the enemies you face on the battlefield, its still the same as the previous Diablo games, not exactly SUPER diverse, but it does its job fairly well of providing you with a balanced amount and diversity in your average landscape.
I dislike how there isn't more intuitiveness to leveling stats, as they are attributed automatically at each level, making it easier, but less creative...
    ______
[6.5], (Overall in content it delivers, if you take you're time there is plenty of sweet singleplayer plot to play, but it suffers from some issues, such as lack of skills and stat variety and customization, monsters not being as fully diverse as I would of liked, (this varies from player to players obviously) and ultimately not a whole lot was actually added to the game from the previous installments.
-Graphics and Audio: In terms of graphics I disagree with what most people say...
About them being sub-par to latest games and hardware, I feel the game as very good artsy-styled graphics, the kind of graphics that do not aim to be realistic, but more of creative and vivid, I think it suits the Diablo style a lot, and they did very well in its overall graphic design, landscapes are diverse, special effects on the spells or animations, such as depth of field, or lens flare, etc. (whatever there may be in the engine) are not over done at all, and the game feels crisp and detailed enough to keep you pleased.
Audio-wise the game does a great job at adapting the weird camera angle into 5.1 speakers, the voice-acting is as expected, quite pleasing, and the quality of the creatures and spells all sound top notch and different, the quality is also exceptional...
    ______
Graphics: [7.5], (The graphics overall suit the game very well, although truth be said, you will not be impressed by any of its technology most likely).
Audio: [9], (The audio quality is top notch, and the voice acting does not disappoint at all, diverse sounds keep you on the lookout!).
-Plot-wise : I cannot rate it, as I have not finished it yet, so far good though!
    [X,X], (...)
    Additional notes:
-Despite the fact that the game had a very rough start (with the servers being down and all), when you get past those issues and you get to play the core essence of this addicting game, you realize that those who even rate this game below 5 are simply to upset at Blizzard for not succeeding to successfully smoothly release a game of this magnitude.
When it comes down to it, the game is a great game, worthy of a purchase, if played with good friends the experience almost doubles, but it is a great game by yourself none the less, overall:
    -[8.5] is my rating!

It's not a classic, but it provides the classic Diablo style, Rogue-inspired gameplay, with very good audio work and a great art style. To all the people complaining about the graphics being out of date, it is entirely Blizzard's intention it look like this. Many games have ruined their sequels by trying to update to more "modern" graphics, AoE2 to AoE3 for example, Dungeon Keeper to DK2, or Mech Commander to MC2. And at the end of the day, gameplay > graphics. Enough said.

Personally I think the game looks great, and reflects the rest of Blizzard's stylised persona. The story is good, if not entralling, and the characters are great. Character development isn't fantastic, it's very stream-lined and could perhaps be deemed dumbed down. You have 6 skill slots with multiple options and glyphs, the first 2 being your clicking options, and the next four being keyboard 1-4. It would be nice if there was an option to flick between 2 premade sets for different situations, especially in multiplayer where you cannot pause.

I haven't tried all the features yet, but after finally getting past several error codes yesterday, 2 friends and I had a little bash through some of Act 1. It's pretty fun, and when it works, it works smoothly. The game does seem rather easy though, and I think hardcore will be the way to go for most gamers, though boss-fights are gonna be scary!

This isn't Diablo 2, and it isn't a piece of art. DRM and server issues aside though, it's a pretty enjoyable game.

PS, to those who struggled to get on, I found the servers became busiest at around 3.30pm, gives you a hint about those who have been raging below!

Doesn't anyone remember the character trainers of Diablo 1 and 2? This is huge problem they had to overcome and this is the only solution for player to player interaction. That said, an offline mode should have been made that wouldn't allow for your character to be an online character, but even that might lead to hacking to transfer fake items to the online world. Let me start by saying I also HATE the DRM i think not having an offline mode is disgraceful HOWEVER we have waited for a long time for this game so lets look past it. PROS: No more pesky town scrolls you have a button from early in the game to port to town Inventory items all take either one or two slots. I think people that criticize this have forgotten just how annoying it was late game to store items. Hours spent trying to fiddle them together Checkpoints I believe that if you a) have the time and b) want to start from town every time you die then you can play hardcore like I used too. Personally I find resurrection at checkpoints quite refreshing. Cut scenes are in my mind beautifully crafted the cinematic graphics are gorgeous and having recently replayed DII I can also say that I font believe the voice acting in DIII is as good but its not atrocious. Cons: The skills and attributes system is the most disappointing thing for me! Having everything unlock automatically for me has taken the skill down and made the game impersonal this really upsets me. My character does not feel individual and the harder game modes are going to have to bring challenges and items and crafting in a special way to rectify this. The connection problems on day one were unfortunate and have led to many bad reviews but this was always going to happen and I have been playing problem free since the morning after launch. Having an arena style pvp is undesirable I will miss the epic in game duals outside town but I can live with it! My biggest gripe with the game is the facility to buy gold! This will totally devalue items! It will get people ahead who are willing to pay their way and it will not reward good/dedicated players for hours spent clearing content. This is by far the most disappointing feature and I really hope it does not remain.

Overall a very good game! It seems that the problems I have with Diabolo III are ofset by just how enjoyable the game its self is. There are some flaws and problems with this remake, but there were always going to be. It is very difficult to follow an epic game such as Diabolo II and die hard fans will always either love or hate. Its well worth the money and I look forward to seeing where the end game goes. One last word to all theose who say it takes from WOW. Go replay Diabolo II and Diabolo, you will see how much WOW took from them.

TLDR: Overall very good game with big boots to fill. Some undesirable game play changes to DII. Terrible auction house and DRM.

It had a few problems at release, but Blizzard has been making constant changes to improve on the game. The most common complaints I've read are regarding the loot drops, the real money auction house (RMAH), and the lack of endgame. Efforts have been made to improve loot drops and endgame, as well as the viability/balance of class skills. The RMAH, unfortunately, is here to stay. I understand why Blizzard did it; people were selling loot in Diablo II, so Blizzard probably tried to have it exist in a controlled environment, whilst also making profit from it. Other than the two points I mentioned, D3 is a great game. The rune skill system was a big change from the skill point system, but one that ultimately works. It provides a streamlined leveling system that offers a steady, constant trickle of new abilities as a character levels. The other aspects of D3, such as followers, have also been improved over their D2 counterparts. However, for those who are fans of the older, D2 system, Torchlight 2 provides an excellent hack and slash alternative (with its own host of improvements on the D2 system). Would I recommend Diablo 3? Yes. I think it's a solid game that tries to bring something new to the table, and offers hours of entertainment. Even the game's detractors can often be seen making comments like "... after 300 hours of playing D3, I realized this game sucks..." I would hardly consider any game that offered over 100 hours of entertainment as being bad. At the very least, these people got their moneys worth from playing the game. If you're on the fence about the game, I would recommend it. It may not offer years of entertainment like its predecessor, but it will definitely provide a lengthy amount of fun for most. Expand

Randomized layouts of the various dungeons is not enough to make this game seem like anything more than running through the same enemies multiple times for items (Although I understand that is the point for some people). The newly added paragon system actually turned me away from the game even more. Patch 1.0.4 added something like 1000+ more hours of gameplay just to reach max level. I don't have the time or the patience to farm some act on some mission for 1000 hours. Having to use the Auction House to progress can also be slightly annoying as it takes away any self reliance. The game did launch with several problems which caused many people on this site to give it terrible reviews. Since launch a lot of new content has been added to address these, thus many of the user reviews on this site are outdated at best, some are just unfair.

The only negetive this game gets from me is that the always online requirement. Having battle.net's social aspects added to the game isnt enough to validate the always online requirement. IE: It causes more problems than it enhances the experience.

It's been over a year since the release of this game and as all the dust has for the most part settled from the initial fiasco of the internet connectivity issues and a solution for the terrible idea that was the real money auction house (just get rid of it entirely). All in all I've got to say, this game is one of the best dungeon crawlers I've experienced in a long while. I do believe that despite Blizzard being a very successful company, they sure do have a horrible fanbase. The community is some of the worst cases of self-entitlement I've ever seen. They really just feel that the longer they play a game they hate the more Blizzard will break down and do something...in actuality most of us actually enjoy Blizzard's games very much (this one included) and really those who hate it are a small minority who seem to enjoy torturing themselves with "mediocre" games until someone fixes it, which really never happens in their mind. Unfortunately Blizzard decided it was a good idea to require an always online connection for single player, meaning you lose your map every time you sign out, you risk lag induced stuttering if there's a problem on their end or yours, and LAN isn't supported. For people that mostly wanted to play online, that's all fine, but for the significant portion of users that are only interesting in single player and/or LAN, Blizzard has thrown in completely unnecessary problems with this ridiculous DRM. To make matters worse, they weren't ready for the launch despite repeating their mantra "it will be out when it's done" for the past several years. Many users, myself included, couldn't log on for hours after the release, and midway through the day the servers went down again. I also found that after logging off and back on, all my keybindings had reverted to the default, so there are definitely still bugs that need to be ironed out. I expect these day 1 problems from Bethesda, which is why I don't buy their games until they've been out for months or years, but Blizzard has always promised a polished, complete product on release. Sadly, they have not delivered that. As a result, I will not be buying any full price Blizzard titles in the future and will completely boycott any future releases with ridiculous DRM. It's sad to see Blizzard sinking to the ranks of companies like EA and Ubisoft.

If it weren't for the DRM, Diablo 3 would get a 9/10 from me. But it has this horrible DRM and a terrible launch, so 5/10 is the most it deserves. Don't buy Diablo 3, at least not until the price comes down. Blizzard doesn't deserve to be paid full price for a game that was so flawed on release.

There is no reason to get that edge since there is not PVP, instead in one of the future releases they are going to create an arena. Overall if you are new to diablo series feel free to buy this title as its a fun hack and slash. If you played previous Diabloâ Expand

At the beginning it feels a lot repetitive, but as you advance and start to unlock skills, crafting, companions, and more, the game reveals itself very addictive. It's a great game, but i hope that there Blizzard launch some patches with new features and expansions with new content because this game can still have much more to give!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, Diablo 3 was a little disappointing compared to what Blizzard and everyone else hyped it to be. Gameplay was by far the best thing about this game, and abilities are really **** satisfying. I loved playing my Barbarian and ripping through enemies while needing to stop and strategize if you see some rare pack of unburied. The gameplay had a lot of drawbacks, though. For one, the game doesn't get at all difficult until you trudge through the first difficulty to just play the same game only slightly harder. Randomization helps a bit, but it was fairly annoying to not be able to choose your difficulty right off the bat and it really adds an element of forced replay value. Game was laden with cutscenes that cut into the flow of the game and don't really do anything but say what already happened. Did I mention it was short?

Graphics were "eh". The art style was fine and got sufficiently grimdark for my tastes at some places (notably king leoric's torture basement, whatever its name was). The actual implementation of the style was a little **** Even on max settings, Diablo 3 looked like it would be a great game for a smartphone, and the technical graphics are crappy. Textures were terrible, and there were jaggies errywhere. The art direction kind of seemed like the lazy way out.

The story of the game, as expected when it was announced to be written by Metzen, was **** Most dialogue was extremely generic, and character development was nonexistant. Your followers had a few backstories, but they were relatively short and none of them were particularly original. There were a lot of retcons present (Izual and Butcher coming back, some various things involving Diablo, and quite a few dialogue points). Characters like Leah and Tyrael (apparently now Tyrone) were pretty unlikeable and bread and butter. Tyrael gets tricked like 3 times in the game by different people, and decides to throw Diablo off the bridge WITH THE **** SOULSTONE INTACT, and then takes his place as "Wisdom". Nice one Blizzard. At least, it provides some evidence of an expansion pack that will no doubt be overpriced.

My main gripe with this game is the **** DRM. Having to be online and WAIT IN A QUEUE for singeplayer is absolutely unacceptable. The constant server updates and mantenience eats into the time you'd otherwise be enjoying yourself, and sometimes these restarts can place you all the way at the beginning of the Act you were on, causing a lot of frustration. If you don't make it to a checkpoint in time, these server problems WILL make you start to a point 30 minutes earlier. Not to mention the game was nearly unplayable the day it was release, when Blizzard had months to iron out things through stress test results. The game was laggy in singleplayer, too. Coop is fine but people tend to rush everything so I don't really suggest going into coop unless you have friends with D3 or if you've already completed the game.

TL;DR Game is fun, but that's pretty much all it gets right

It's true that Diablo 3 was plagued by launch issues, but launch issues are expected from almost every game; especially one with the largest launch day player-base for any PC title in the history of, well, PC titles. To Blizzard's credit, Launch day woes were resolved through an aggressive onslaught of patches before the week had even ended, and no review or score should hold launch issues against a game that sold over 3.5 million copies in it's first day. Ignoring the the launch day disaster leaves us with a game that, while expertly produced, may not be so fondly remembered by history as previous installments in the franchise have been. For starters, Diablo 3's art direction (however much criticism was leveled against it during development) is as polished, focused, and well executed as all Blizzard games have become expected to be. The graphical fidelity of Diablo 3 is not state of the art; and for a very good reason. It was never meant to be. Diablo 3's graphical requirements are designed to be accessible, and in this regard the development team at Blizzard for Diablo 3 have done quite well despite the limitations they set for themselves. The lonely, desolate feel of Diablo 1 & 2 is still present in the third dimension, and overall design is still top notch. The cinematic cutscenes in Diablo 3 are probably the highest quality that can be produced with current technology and look fantastic. Unfortunately while the characters in Diablo 3's cutscenes are all jaw-gapingly pretty, Diablo 3's story fails to garner a similar reaction. In all honesty Diablo 3's writing is not bad enough to induce vomit, but it will certainly work your gag reflexes. Which is unfortunate because one of the best parts of Diablo 2 was it's dark, mysterious story of interweaving stories culminating in a showdown with Diablo, and ultimately resulting in the destruction of the Worldstone. Diablo 2's engaging story was certainly one of the factors behind the hype buildup for Diablo 3. I won't spoil anything about Diablo 3's story, but it's safe to say that story will most likely not be a replay value for most people. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately depending on how you look at it) Diablo 3's story and campain are fairly short. Expect to be through the campaign on normal difficulty in anywhere from a few hours to a day, depending on how completionist you tend to be. Nightmare difficulty takes only slightly longer, and is only slightly more difficult as well. Hell mode presents a fair leap in difficulty from both normal and nightmare difficulties, but by the time you beat the story for the 3rd time you will most likely be at or around level 60 with decent enough gear to run all 3 difficulties without too much trouble. Inferno, however, is a different story altogether. Most player's first experience in Inferno mode will most likely be dying to cannon fodder that are suddenly and mysteriously able to kill less durable classes in only a few swipes. More problematic are field minibosses which are transformed from what were essentially free magic quality loot into literal roadblocks preventing you and your friends (if you happen to be playing with them) from moving on. This is because Loot tables are set up to drop the most desirable and consistently level 60 gear from field bosses to encourage grinding out caverns and maps, and as a result field bosses are meant to be the most difficult encounters. Most actual story related boss encounters including Diablo itself are rather scripted and easy to defeat even on Inferno, and the loot they drop is accordingly scaled down. The result being that players are discouraged from farming bosses over and over and are instead encouraged to run entire dungeons or indeed acts to farm the rarest of loot. It isn't a bad thing to encourage per se, but fighting the lords of hell holds significantly less gravitas when reading their attacks tends to play out like an intense game of Simon Says.

But while the difficulty of Inferno at first encounter is frustratingly high, the actual mechanics and features of the game itself are conflictingly shallow. Gone are the stat points, skill points, and inventory management of Diablos past. In Diablo 3 everything is automatic, and you are given the option at a click of a button to create a town portal anywhere and anytime you want. The auction house is a good way to obtain items that are most likely leagues better than the ones you find for a relatively low price, and the addition of a real money auction house is honestly just valid response to gold farmers who would otherwise offer the same services. In the end, Diablo 3 is a well produced Blizzard product which does ARPG as well as is possible within the current formula. Which is a downright shame because Diablo 3 could have been a Blizzard's biggest chance to turn things upside down and breathe new life into the aging ARPG genre.

-There wasn't a great deal of innovation on the series. I've played all the the Diablo games and enjoyed them for what they were. That being said, it seems reasonable to have slightly higher expectations for a game that was released after a 10 year gap in the series.

-My most immediate turn off was the boring loot. In a game that's literally about collecting loot, the items were terrible. Armor sets that match for bonuses, cool proc effects, legendary items that grant fun abilities...all gone and replaced with stat sticks. Even the stats on the legendary items were bad.

-Customization was gone. I liked being able to distribute my stats. Even if each point gave me improvement measured in some tiny percentage, it was satisfying to do so.

-Pay to win. This is completely ridiculous. I'm not a competitive player, so I ignored the auction house completely. Though the fact that it exists is very, very wrong.

-Price. At the time of release the game was $60. It had dropped when I bought it and is due to drop again. Though I suspect a $40 expansion is in the works. This just seems a little over the top when similar games are so much cheaper. (Torchlight 2 $15, Path of Exile FREE)

What the game gets right are great looking graphics, the always high quality Blizzard cinematics, and bug free gameplay. The voice acting, though cheesy, is done by some of the best in the business. It just wasn't enough though. I've rarely felt "cheated" by a game, but for the price, Diablo III just wasn't worth it.

I never was able to get my hands on the first installment but played the second all the time at a friends house and was infatuated with it. Needless to say I was quite ecstatic when Diablo III was announced along with the rest the die hard fans and PC gaming community as a whole (I mean come on, it's Diablo, everybody was pumped). Now here is where I will be brief for the sake of being succinct; I do not even begin to the fathom the reason of the negativity. Diablo III is more than a solid game, it is a worthy successor to iterations past and continues Blizzard's legacy of impeccable game design. It is game designed so meticulously and with attention to detail that it warrants nothing less than praise from the sound design, to the visuals, the feel of each class, and most of all the loot system. I don't see how you can a more accessible but still fundamentally deep game that plays as well as Diablo III. Sure, one could argue the story is a little melodramatic and that the DRM thing is a little annoying (especially given the game's shaky launch) and the the auction house detracts from the end game...but here is the thing, this is Blizzard. What do I mean by that? Blizzard is a company committed to it's games and fans they will release patches, the game will get increasingly better. This not only has happened (introduction of the Hellfire Ring, Monster Power, and Paragon) but will continue to happen (PvP, Matchmaking, More End game questing). I think ultimately the community is griping because of server side issues and a system that can be completely ignored (the Auction House). Enjoy the Diablo III for what it is: a damn good and addictive hack and slash role playing game. Expand

A lot of the mistakes with this game have been fixed. Some are still outstanding however. The foremost of these is the draconic use of DRM. Not being able to play even single player durning server maintenance is beyond stupid.

The game is too short and a lot of features are removed that were here in Diablo 2. I love some new stuff but that's just not enough for a game that was waited for 12 years. Expected more form graphics...

    The Good:
The environments and sound design are spot on. The areas in the game are lush, the models are well done, the physics engine and amusing and absolutely glorious to see in action.

    The Bad:
Literally everything else. The voice acting is terrible, the plot is full of holes, you must be online 100% of the time, even to play the single player (and believe me, you don't notice how often your internet goes out until a game will kick you off the second it cuts out), the entire game lacks any sort of challenge, there is only a linear progression along a fix skill "road", rather than the skill tree that made Diablo 2 such a pleasure to play.

You cannot allocate points to anything relating to your character. Everything RPG related is totally fixed, and the only thing you can do to affect a character's effectiveness in combat is to buy a new weapon that puts points into your character's "primary skill", which is to say, the only skill that will ever matter to you.

So, lets say you are a Barbarian that has reached the maximum allowed level. You are 100% identical to every other Barbarian at your level. The only differences you have are the abilities that you have equipped, which you can swap out at literally any time, and the weapon that you are holding.

Due to this asinine lack of character customization, you must use a new feature that I honestly didn't think would affect the game. I was, unfortunately, wrong.

I am talking about the Auction House. In game, the weapons that you find are worth around 50 gold. In the online auction house, you can sell your items to other players for hundreds of times that price.

What happens to the game is this: You get frustrated, and because leveling up will not affect your build or character, you go to the auction house, buy a new weapon, beat the bad guy. Repeat ad nauseum until you finish the game.

The bosses are visually impressive, but pathetically easy. I honestly don't even know what happens if you die, and I finished the game on the "hard mode" equivalent.

This is easily the worst sequel I have ever played. This game felt more like a halfway thought out mod for a better game than a full fledged sequel to what was arguably the greatest dungeon crawler of all time. I cannot recommend this. Not even after a year's worth of patching is this game even 1/10th of Diablo 2. Not only is it a terrible sequel, it is a terrible game, and Blizzard should be ashamed for tarnishing this once wonderful franchise this this abomination of poor game design.

If you have a love for Diablo 2, I beg of you, stay faaaaaar away. If you have never played Diablo 2, go buy that instead. It's a third of the price and 10000% better.

It ruined Diablo Lore It severely limited character customization
Item affixes were severely limited, others have mentioned this as well. I actually did the math and you're getting something like 70 less item affixes than you did in Diablo 2. Even the gems are simplified to the point where all you get is your main stat. This further limits character customization.

Some of the Elite monsters were so stupidly overpowered that it was nearly impossible to pass them in a dungeon without dying 20 times in a row. You lost gold doing this, and with the new changes to how repairs work, many players were without gold for quite some time.. unless of course they went to the RMAH. This was even more of a problem when most characters had to build incredibly tanky to stay alive, but lacked damage output to kill these monsters, putting them into a frenzy state where they pretty much started 2-3 shotting you(more damage in frenzy)

Boss Fights were ridiculously easy compared to the elite monster fights, Not even kidding here.

The game in general has been dumbed down, simplified for the casual masses, The fact that it's coming to the consoles supports this. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but when the majority of the player base was expecting a true successor to diablo and diablo 2, This wasn't meeting their expectations. '

The game was quite repetitive. Other games have figured out that having small limited maps is quite boring, Diablo 3 did not seem to get this memo. I understand that it's hard to make maps, but diablo 2 had map generators, which Diablo 3 also has, but it's use is severely limited and often times you only get a handful of slightly different maps. I actually had to ask myself at one point, are these maps really random? or is there just 2-3 different variations that get randomly chosen, This is because during my 4 playthroughs(normal to inferno) I got stuck with the same maps for dungeons more than once.

I mean, I could go on till I used my 5000 characters up, but to me it just seems like Blizzard made a simplified casual hack n slash. They had so much that they could've drawn idea's from, plenty of hack n slash games to look at. What makes them popular, and what makes them boring or repetitive. It seems that even with all this, they decided to not heed any of it, and make a game that gets boring after one playthrough.

Hell, even their answer to the lack of content was the paragon system, Essentially, once you max your level. You level more... But this time it's Paragon levels. This is copy and paste from the blizzard website itself.
After you hit level 60, any further experience you earn from killing monsters will begin to count toward Paragon levels
    There are 100 Paragon levels
Every Paragon level will reward you with:

Core stats such as Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Vitality in amounts similar to what you’d gain from a normal level
3% Magic Find and 3% Gold Find

So instead of adding more actual content, they decided to just add more levels for you to grind, in the same limited content.

I really hope this opens some peoples eyes, the people giving it 10/10 or 8/10, or 9/10 are most likely players that have never experienced the genre before, or have never even played diablo1/2. They may like the game, but there is honestly SO much more that Blizzard could've done with Diablo, but chose not to, Anyone that's not a Casual player would be able to tell you this. You see it on the games forums, and you see it on here in the user reviews.

It gets a 3/10 from me because the graphics are nice, they seem to fit in with the whole Diablo series nicely, and the music is pretty decent as well(still not as good as D2). I also like that they were trying to reach the casual playerbase, just not necessarily how they did it. Mostly because it seems like it's just being done for money. If they improved upon some, or even all of the things I mentioned, I would likely give this game a 7/10 or even 8-9 depending on how well it was done. I bet most other reviewers here would do the same as well.

Audio - sounds/voice acting are top notch (10/10) but music is waaay worse than the first diablo (id give it 1/10 - cant remember even one theme). So id be 6/10.
And finally lets get to gameplay - its way more dynamic, than previous settlements but its also dumbed down. No matter how hard blizzard tries to change ballance, You alway search for items witch 1-2 specific bonuses (like attack speed, critical hit chance/damage). ITS JUST BORING. In previous DIABLO You had way more options to build Your characters, now You must do it this one specific way or Your avatar will just suck compared to the ones using "best build". Its just plain bad concept. The problem is, this was made to cash in from auction house which was fine option but now it is removed so we got really broken product.

That being said, this game by itself, without thinking about its forefathers and the style of play they brought to the table, it's not a bad game to play with a bunch of friends that you want to just beat mobs up with and raid dungeons for the #loots. People tend to get on a bandwagon for only one line of thought when it comes to these types of games. The older generation of gamers that played Diablo in the 90s are definitely entitled to ask Blizzard why they would deviate from the recipe of what makes Diablo what it is, but Diablo 3 takes a different turn that players can still enjoy.

I say all this because I don't want people to jump on Metacritic and immediately throw away the thought of getting the game altogether. If I'm to be perfectly honest, I wasn't around to appreciate D1. I was there for a little bit of D2, but when D3 came out, only my older cousins who were diehard Diablo fans had sh*t to talk. I enjoyed and still enjoy to play with my friends in cooperative kickassery of the demon population in whatever randomized dungeon we may encounter on whatever difficulty we may play in however many ways we get royally f*cked and make no mistake, this game can kick your @$$ if you don't know what you're doing. But regardless of what you may see on here, there is still potential for fun to be had regardless of the lack of respect for past games.

All I'm asking you, reader, is to try the game out for free yourself and see what you think. Don't let your mind be clouded by the reviews made by the previous generation. You can still play Diablo for 3 up until level 15 for free with the Starter Edition if I'm correct and you can experience a bit of the game yourself. If you don't like it, no one would blame you. But I urge you not to jump on the bandwagon of reviews that are based on OTHER games and not this one without having had the chance to try it yourself.

    Personal Rating: 7/10

    Pros:
Lots of fun with friends (if you don't have a Debbie Downer who's nostalgic about D1 & D2)
    Dungeons are pretty well randomized
    #madlootz
Story is a little predictable but still enjoyable (It's about the eternal conflict of Angels and Demons, 90s gamers, I don't know why you want your mind blown. It's an epic not Inception.)
Higher difficulty levels bring loads of challenge to less skilled players

    Cons:
If you're nostalgic, chances are you won't like it
Character customization can be a little linear and it can be easy to pick out the best abilities
Not really an RPG it's a Hack 'n Slash
    Online play is required
You could be spending your time playing other games

It launched with an Auction House that made it a glorified trading simulator with an Action RPG backend. The Auction House was removed at a point when many had already lost interest in the game, and we were left with a linear, repetitive storyline and a game that needed massive and regular rebalancing, leading me to wonder what Blizzard did all those (10!) years this game was in development?

Beyond the game balance issues, the item issues (a cornerstone to this kind of game), it had a very simple character attribute system put in the game's control, so you had few ways to influence the way your character developed beyond the gear. This made the game become extremely gear focused and dependant -- even a fireball skill would depend on how much damage an equipped axe would do! Completely defying logic.

Most concering of all, was that the original games suffered from none of these issues, and they were likely the result of a game development team having more experience from MMO games and World of Warcraft, than hardcore Diablo gaming.

In short, it looks like a Diablo, but it doesn't play much like one.

The lead game director was later pulled from this project, and a glimmer of hope was lit in its expansion: Reaper of Souls. Unfortunately, few of the redeeming qualities in that expansion (Adventure Mode, the Rift system) trickled down to this poor humpbacked game.

Low stash. In Path of Exile you can just purchase some stash slots and that's all but not in Diablo 3. If you are an item messy then you will have a rlly hard time in this game. 3. By far not enough char slots. 3. Lag 4. Balancing, yes I hate the balancing in this game. They mostly increase the damage the character can do BUT not the defense. What's the point in dealing billions of damage when you die in 1 hit only. I've been playing the ninja Set for a looooong time just because this is the only Set which is tanky enough not to die just by being smiled at. I even have equiped so many gear which reduces the incomming dmg in % amount but still I get ONE SHOT. Guess the Ninja is the only set / class which is left to me.

2021: Well Blizzard is still not able to balance classes / Sets. Some classes are much stronger, faster than others. It's just a joke that one class can flye through the maps and other is like a snail that is trying to move by itself. Why Blizzard is so bad in balancing stuff like that? Why are some classes so extremely slow?

No offline mode. End game very poor. No trade like D2/POE. (limited trade with party member for ~4h).
    Everything is made casual;
    Forced to all play with the same build for the end-game;
For D4 they have already announced that there will be no trade except with his group. Blizzard isn't what it used to be. I won't buy any more games as long as they continue in this direction

The classes are varied and the plethora of spells and runes (spell modifiers) offer a wide range of customization. With that in mind, the enjoyment gets a bit tainted by always online drm and a very linear system of leveling. While on the first glance it seems you have limited choices regarding spells, the system is satisfying and lets you modify your characters abilities as well as spells. Blizzard has tried something new, and I applaud them for it. It seems that most people wanted Diablo 2 with better graphics, or were expecting a WoW 2. I for one enjoy the game tremendously - though I do feel for the people that can't play due to lag or hacking issues. Expand

This game exceeded expectations in every way. Do not listen to the trolls. Just finished on normal mode (took about 18 hours). I didnt find it too short, too long, etc. I've been playing on U.S Servers since launch and minus the first hours after midnight on Tuesday have not had a connection issue since. The graphics are fantastic, the story is the best one in the series (by far-I didn't really sucked into the story in Diablo 2 or the original), but its not so distracting that you can't focus on the loot, etc.

Online only? So what. If it keeps hackers out of the game, I'm fine with that. DRM isn't that big of a deal, if you happen to out of town or something just pick up Diablo 2 for a couple of days, you'll be fine. It honestly doesn't bother me. Its 2012, not 2000. Although i was worried about the changes to skills, etc at first, I now feel like streamlining it has made it much easier to simply focus on the action, and I love being able to change skills depending on the situation. I rememer in Diablo 2 seeing another Amazon build (or whatever class) and being like man I'd love to try that, but then not wanting to start over. As I play my demon hunter its fantastic to be able to try out spike traps, caltrops, etc without having to commit long term, or to use them just when I need them. Haters are going to hate, but when it comes down to it all the people giving this game a zero are going to spend the next 6 months (or more) leveling up every class to 60. Yes launch night had some problems, but how many other game companies have to deal with global servers and millions of players from day 1? Not many, and kudos to blizzard for handling it the way they did.

Everytime I say okay I'm done I just think of killing a few more things, getting some more quests done, and grabbing a few more loot. It nails the formula so perfectly and Blizzard has again outdone themselves. Now bring on Warcraft IV! =)

Cons: Very shallow level of player customization (you customize with gear which is generally a product of luck+number of hours played, you customize with limited skill selection... but a whole customization angle, stat point allocation, is done automatically - a little hand-holdy for my liking and rules out some player decisions and custom builds); The dark gritty look of Diablo which was appealing to so many many has been replaced with a rather cutesy graphical style that moves the overall look somewhere between Torchlight's very cartoony style and Kingdom of Amalur's pastel tones - overall it looks a lot like Dungeon Siege 3 graphically... for a game intended to be a descent into hellish landscapes of the Diablo universe, they've adopted far too cute a graphical style for this old Diablo 1 and 2 player, and they needed to consider their market here.... not 10 year olds with that certificate, game world, and likely fan base; The "oh god please why did you do that" online requirement. THIS is why so many user reviews on metacritic range between 0 and 5. The game REQUIRES that you play permanently logged into battlenet servers... yes, even single player. Couple that with the inevitable server congestion particularly in the first few days and you get a game that you cannot play when you want to. And the thing that irritates the most is the rationale for Blizzard doing so. Wait, it's so you can play multiplayer and chat to people and have online achievements and trade gear with others and reduce the chance of in-game cheating isn't it? No, it blatantly isn't. Because those could be accomplished in multiple ways that didn't fundamentally require that every moment you played as a single player was done online. I get achievements in offline steam games that purely upload stats after sessions or at the next online opportunity. I get to play multiplayer in numerous single player games by selecting multiplayer options. If I want online chat I can go online, same for trading and other features. This leaves exposed the real reason our game (or our game licence as the EULA so dramatically reminds us) is fully tied to battlenet servers and is forced to be played online: as a misguided and failed anti-piracy measure. Misguided and failed for the simple reasons that pirates will be played a cracked version that doesn't require being online at all, and crucually, will be doing so WHILE PAYING CUSTOMERS CANNOT. When battlenet is down and we can't use the software we payed for, the pirates won't be affected. This type of anti-piracy measure only hurts real customers, game pirates work around the measure and avoid the negative consequences of the measure (i.e. server congestions and downtimes). It's a popular move in some game companies (EA love it). These companies need to know how much their customers hate it, how easy it is for the pirates to circumvent it, and how it ultimately ends up hitting the real paying customers and not the intended targets. They spend money that could be invested into the actual game on groups of self-aggrandizing security teams that have sold them a lie, the lie that by taking this path they will reduce piracy - it's **** It doesn't do that at all. It... just... hassles... and... demonizes... your... paying.... customers. End rant.

Difficulty levels. Normal is WAY TOO EASY. Yes I know it's meant to be accessible, and there are way harder difficulty levels in wait for those completing the story on normal. But many gamers don't like to splurge all the way through with zero challenge before they unlock a challenge. A game should challenge the player the first time it is played through too. By all means have an easy mode for weaker players, cater to all levels of ability to ensure a challenge appropriate to skill... but don't force skilled gamers to play all the way through the whole experience BEFORE they can play a game that challenges them (by which time they've less incentive to play, albeit mitigated by the game's decent level of replayability). Here's how I would have done it (though I'm no expert): make normal way harder, to the point when a typical gamer will die many times throughout; have an easy difficulty level for those that are more casual gamers or the squeamish that cry too much when they die a lot; have one difficulty level above normal available from the outset for the tough gamers that want it; then have your other much harder difficulty levels unlock as they do. Simplez. All players catered for, no requirement that pro gamers go for a long walk in a heavily spoilered park without a feeling of challenge.

Overall, an enjoyable game with many of the aspects present necessary to give players their loot-hunting Diablo goodness, but one marred with a crappy anti-piracy measure and some watered down ****

Few hours of downtime - You've got the next 10 years to play, people

Can't set attributes - Welcome to 2012. The mainstream gamer doesn't want stats/attributes that can't be changed if they mess up their build. Which MMO made in recent years doesn't have resets? A lot have done away with stats entirely. Same trend follows here. Graphics - Could be darker, but how gritty can you make an isometric 3D game? It's easy with 2D sprites in D1 and D2. If they were to do it for D3, it would take too much texturing and only run well on good computers. Blizzard wants casuals with crappy computers to play. I'd rather have big community rather than a group of elitists.

Real money store - They want money, sure. But it would've happened legit or not. How do you support a free online game for this many people without monthly subscription or an item shop? You guys gonna donate? Game's not perfect, but the complaints above aren't even relevant.

That's not rating the art, that's rating it's delivery. That's the equivalent of giving The Avengers a 3/10 because you waited in a long line for your tickets and your theater smelled bad. I'm not trying to dismiss the shortcomings of the game itself, because there are certainly a few. The graphics may be dated. Veterans of this franchise know this has always been the case. One of Diablo II's biggest demerits was the aged visuals. The art styling has certainly changed from the previous entries. I like it when a developer takes risks going for a specific style. If every game I played strived for photo realism I'd get pretty bored. I get what they were trying to do artistically, with the whole epic story on a painted canvas, and I personally liked it. I do think the game is too bright by default. Even changing the gamma settings to their lowest in-game wasn't enough. I had to adjust my monitor's settings. You could claim my display wasn't calibrated properly, but I would take that as a direct insult and slap you silly. The lack of talent points... disappoints. See what I did there? This does make it feel like an RPG-Lite. There were certain encounters during the game where it was convenient to swap out skills that better suited the situation. Still... I think a respec option or dual spec would have appeased myself and many others more than the runes solution. I like customizing the spells but it doesn't feel like the character you're playing is your own, like the predecessors. I'm not sure why this design decision was made. Maybe to appeal to a novice/new generation of gamers? Cause the game didn't have a large enough fan base... The game's music and sound effects are exceptional. If you think different, go order another set of Sonic Earz or something. While Matt Uelman's talents are now with Runic, Blizzard seemed to just stay the course. You'll hear no complaints from me concerning that. The voice acting is solid, typical for a Blizzard game. The greatest form of flattery is imitation. Blizzard's genre defining franchise has influenced some excellent titles recently. Runic Games (Blizzard North - Part Deux) released the exceptional Torchlight in 2009. The sequel's release is on the horizon with multiplayer included this time around. For those that love stats and building crazy class combinations, I can't recommend Titan Quest (with Immortal Throne expansion) enough. I enjoyed playing this game. Was it everything that I had hoped and expected it would be? No, no it was not. I'm not going to throw in plot spoilers, promise. The varied scenery is nice. The character building felt overly simplified. There were points in the story where I tilted my head and said, "Really?!" The campaign felt shorter than the previous titles. The amount of time that has passed between sequels, I believe, is a disadvantage for Blizzard. The nostalgia conjured, anticipation fueled, and expectations built by this single title nearly demands perfection. Diablo III was not perfection. Maybe I, along with many others, were too naive and expected just that. I get the feeling the same game would've been more well received if it was a fresh IP from another developer. Expand

This game has massive replay value - you're likely going to put in 50 hours just to clear the first two levels of difficulty with one character. I'm surprised that the game feels so different running through the storyline again on the next difficulty level. Mob aren't just a little more difficult overall, they also can come with new abilities that force you to react differently. The last part helps reduce the potential for monotony. I fing the game slightly more difficult when grouping but of course it's more fun to play with others. You can drop in and out of doing things with friends easily and painlessly - even if you're only doing co-op for 5 mins with a friend there's no harm done by leaving (difficulty adjusts automatically based on party size). Other than the first day, I have had no issues logging on. Giving the game a 0 rating for those problems is short-sighted. THIS IS A VERY GOOD GAME. Period. Regarding on-line access for a single-player game, the downside is well documented (read the zero ratings). The upside for me is that I can play on multiple computers easily (which I do). Regardless, not a reason to avoid purchase because the value for $60 is tremendous. PVP has been delayed which I don't have a problem with - my hands are full working on progressing through the difficulty which will take me a while. When PVP arrives, it will feel like a free expansion pack. There aren't many games worth $60, but DB3 is epic fun! I dinged them to a 9 for the initial troubles with servers because I hold Blizzard to a higher standard than others. The game itself is 10/10. Expand

I found it excellent. Easy to pick up and play. Levelling is rewarding because you get new runes all the time. Gear is GOD in this game and it feels awesome getting something with the right stats for you. You can customize or craft gear through artisans in the game... Or if you wanna spend then you can just go the auction house. Lots of good stuff there.

Story and cutscenes were top notch. Some of the voice acting could have been done better. Biggest complaint is from the online component where the servers can go down, and I get lag spikes from time to time. But it's still a great game really, and it was well worth the wait for me.

Before I review Diablo III lets review a comparison between Diablo I and II for illustration. Looking at Diablo I and II is a great example because Diablo II was a huge improvement from the first one because of the technology upgrade and huge depth of story improvement. Also, the cinematic upgrade was a huge improvement in quality to allow for longer story and depth. Comparing Diablo II to III is a much smaller jump because a huge amount of the story has already been explained and the technology upgrade will likely not change to greatly due to the amount of time spent on the project which will go off of an earlier engine closers to 2004- 2006. Having said that Diablo III did bring in a great amount of improvements such as: cleaner potion and gold auto pick ups, nicer graphics, fluid storyline for hack-in-move style, better co-op integration, darker feel than D2, evenly shared loot drops, and simpler interface design. The area that most people complain about is the simple design change for the skill system and attribute changes. Personally, I like the old system BUT! I can see how this new system over time will allow most players the opportunity to try every skill possible where before most people followed a cookie cutter build that someone else made and typically didn't venture further in fear of wasting points. I think Blizzard made a risky move that will pay off in the long term when the more advanced players start to see all the customization available between the skills and rune combinations. I am happy to say that Blizzard has pulled off a wonderful sequel that meets my expectations and deserves a rating of hard work that has been done. Expand

That said, the always-on DRM is an extremely poor design choice just to support the real money auction house. The game loses 2 points for that. It should probably lose 3, but I'm having so much fun it's hard to really bring it below a "positive" score. When server issues raise their head though, it is horrendous

Casualization. Character variability unfortunately took a hit: every character is strictly identical to all other characters of its class on each level. This facilitates Activision-Blizzard's job of balancing the classes, as multiplayer is now an important component of the game, and competitivity must be ensured. Alas, character personalization still exists: items now play an even more central role in character uniqueness when similar games are taken into account. These items, of course, also orbit Diablo's nucleous, the Auction House: a step up from WoW's own that takes an inexpugnable role in Diablo III's monetization scheme. This is also the sole true justification for a DRM that impedes gamers from playing a single player game offline: everyone knows how this goes. The game have its charms: the graphics, even though sub-par when compared to today's standards, and with a very "distinct" style when compared to the old iterations of the series, are nice and help the game manifest in almost anything that has a silicon chip: this, as any company would attest, gathers more players and payers. Connection errors are surely just a launch hiccup and will surely be mitigated, as not even the company with 11 million users and one of the biggest beta stress tests could have foreseen. Or could. In spite of all that, the game is still thrilling: beating Diablo after a quick 3h stroll is indeed worth the investment. Specially if you like casual games. And wasting money. The other can still hope: a 60 level cap mean expansions, but even before that patches may straight out all this moneywhoreness. Or not. Expand

D3 is an evolution of D2, exactly like a lot of people wanted it. They took D2 and polished the game, removing some things and improved others. Like the stat trees. A lot of people complained that it was more fun to customize the game that way, but we all know, we´d have the same stats/ optimized stats for every class in the end. The skill tree is so much better. It has a lot more customization and gives more spells at the same time to work with. The interface is nice to look at, but those things were all something we just expected to be there anyway. Leveling... If it aint broke, dont fix it. I honestly think this was a step back. It feels like I´m doing quests in WoW. The game doesnt have the same feeling of freedom as D2 did. You´re bound to following a path and have no options to skip anything, unless you´ve already done it. Boosting also seems to have died with D3, which some might think is good, but I feel like it takes too much time to reach lvl 60. Once you´ve gone through it all, if your friends need you on a new class or you just wanna play something else, you´d want the option to make it fast to the content you wanna be at (inferno, right?). The gameplay. Well it´s almost flawless, except for the few times where a monster's target frame is too big and you cant move your hero. The combat is fluid and for some reason its just so much fun to watch your hero tear through creep after creep. They got it right and they can fix what they didnt. This is the part of the game people are looking for and will be what keeps us playing it for years. A thing I´d like to see implemented is the option to use "WASD". This is mainly for the arena pvp to come, cause it is the best way to move your hero around while having maximum control. They used it in Bloodline champions, so yes it is possible to work very well.

The crafting. Crafting feels boring. You just buy your skill levels. There is no market to sell crafting mats on ah for people to level their profession, which is a missed opportunity. The story is relatively long, compared to most other single player campaigns that are accompanied by a big multiplayer. But it still feels short. It feels rushed. When I played through it, I wasnt trying to guess what happened next, like I usually do. The story didnt really put much effort into getting to know the characters very well. The story and plot had a lot of potential, but missed out. The sound and graphics are great. I see a lot of people complaining, saying the graphics should be much better. But this is a game, that runs so smooth and without any kind of errors, while still looking good. Like SC2, Blizzard delivered a game with rock solid performance. Most of the errors are serverside and will most likely go away with time. Not like Skyrim, which looks good, but the first google result on it is how to fix crash errors. Overall they got the gameplay right and they´ll make a lot of money. The game isn't perfect and a lot of people seem unhappy, but in the end they´ll still be Bli$$ard.

It seemed like a rather amateur mistake, unfit of Blizzard, but it's mostly corrected by now (at least I can get into the game pretty much whenever I want, and I don't randomly lose achievements or characters any more). There will also be a kind of duality in my review, because I can't really do justice to the game itself AND the underlying service with a single decimal value.
With that out of the way, let's get to the core game itself. In a nutshell, I think it's fantastic, and it totally brings to the table what's expected of a Diablo game. I understand why many say that the character building part was dumbed down and made more casual, but I disagree. I agree, that in the first few hours the character progression is very linear and even boring, but after you have unlocked all the skills and a good number of runes, things become much more interesting. There is a lot of possibility for experimentation and customisation in the later parts of the game (nightmare and up), and I think the current slot system can yield much more diverse results than the previous skill tree system. I just like it better, and it's simply not true that there is no depth to it. Furthermore, I felt that Diablo II's stat point system was a sort of a 'there is only one way to do it right' system, and I don't really miss it.
Graphically the game is OK. It's nowhere near cutting edge, but its not ugly either. The environments are very well designed and diverse, although the whole backdrop seems a bit washed out, bleak compared to the characters and effects on top of them. The sound design and visual effects are brilliant, and the art style is flawless too, although it could have been a bit darker/more grisly in general. Its true that the level design (layout) is missing it's predecessor's procedurally generated randomness, but I think it was worth to trade it in for the more capturing, detailed environments. The random elements are still there in the form of dungeons, events and challenges, and the gameplay is very dynamic and impactful. As far as difficulty goes, I haven't played on nightmare yet, and normal difficulty is in fact a bit too easy, but the way I see it, the more technical/tactical side of the gameplay begins on the higher difficulty levels, and normal mode is more oriented towards experiencing the story and getting used to the gameplay mechanics of your character. But this also means that with each playthrough the normal difficulty is more and more obsolete, eventually becoming a boring chore (as you roll new classes, the only things that keeps you playing through normal are the unique features of your new class, and reaching higher difficulty levels).
So in a nutshell, the game itself is definitely the king of it's genre in my eyes, and apart from a few flaws and pitfalls, it's nearly flawless. In light of this, the core game gets a solid 8/10 from me.
But not so the underlying service. The constant online requirement is a draconian DRM, that really only hurts the paying customers, causing only frustration for those who have particularly unstable internet connections and just want to play in single player mode. The real money auction house is a travesty, and I will simply avoid it at all costs. Although I like the AH (the in game currency one), this whole online only scheme seems to be a shameless money grab from Blizzard, and I would have very much preferred a totally separate online and offline experience, with my single player characters on my hard drive, and my single player experience having nothing to do with my ISP, or availability of Blizzard servers. So the underlying Battle.net service for Diablo III gets a shameful 2/10 from me.

Graphics are fine, and animations are cool. I do not think Diablo 2 graphics have aged well (I tried playing it again before D3 came out). Diablo 3 took away skill trees and attribute points. I am disappointed about the removal of attribute points, but maybe with the release of PVP they will add more customization. As for skill points..."skill runes will increase the number of skill variations to 6 including the base skill. And as each character class has at least 20 skills, the overall total of skill variations per class is 6^20." So removal of skill points is not that bad in my opinion. The games lore and story are fantastic, I loved the new characters and the directions old ones have taken. The graphics are beautiful and feel like a breathing painting, the characters, skills are all very well done, polished and fun to use. The game is at the point for me where i am struggling to focus on my build and choose which skills i like most. Gone is stacking 20 points into 3-4 skills and the useless skills i had to use in my trees to get to the one i wanted, gone is the tedious spam into vitality and the few points i needed to assign to other attributes to use items. The auction house is a welcome addition and i find a good part of my time exchanging goods on it as well as trying to find a good price for that all important upgrade.

As a core fan of the games, all the things i loved are back and better - i look forward to many years of Diablo III :)

Whilst the game has struggled in the first week to stand up, I'll gladly give it a week so i do not have to deal with the duping, cheating and various other issues that plagued Diablo II. People do not seem to understand why this game is online only, they think it is because of DRM, it is to combat the past issues that have been so common in the last 2 games.

I have logged around 65 hours into Diablo III, and while my binging has slowed down, I have yet to lose any enjoyment with this game. The reason I have been slowing down, actually, is because Hell has been giving me a bit of trouble, and I'm giving myself time to work carefully through it.

I have logged around 65 hours into Diablo III, and while my binging has slowed down, I have yet to lose any enjoyment with this game. The reason I have been slowing down, actually, is because Hell has been giving me a bit of trouble, and I'm giving myself time to work carefully through it.

To start with, many of the systems have improved Diablo 2's archaic design, streamlining the experience and allowing for maximum fun with minimal hoops to jump through. Leveling from 1-60 is done much the same way as 1-99 in D2, by progressing from Act I to Act IV, and then starting Nightmare, and then Hell difficulties to finish reaching the max level. The difference is that Diablo 2 took a massive time investment and a tedious grind to actually achieve the level cap, whereas Diablo 3 allows you to reach 60 after playing through the three difficulties.

This speedier leveling system is mostly because of Inferno, a difficulty tacked onto the end of the game, designed to contain the best loot and the most challenging content. I, myself, have not reached Inferno mode, as I am only halfway through Hell, but I can say that I have heard terrifying things about how intense this new difficulty is. The visuals are crisp and smooth, and my computer can run it on its highest graphical settings without an issue. Skills are a joy to look at, a personal favorite of mine being "Electrocute", which is a wizard spell that is essentially Chain Lightning. The bosses all have interesting designs, most notably the final encounter of Act II, which brings a surprising amount of scale into the battle not seen in previous Diablo games. As always, the end of act cinematics are an absolute treat to behold, and even if you choose not to play the game, you should look them up somewhere to experience the incredible detail. Sound is satisfying, explosions, shattering stone and wood, and the screams of your conquered foes all filling your ears as satisfyingly as can be. The music is subtle at times, but fits the atmosphere as well as can be expected. The voice acting is especially satisfying, and I cannot find a character that speaks any differently than I would expect. The vocal shouts from Diablo 2 have returned, giving access to a quick method of thanking your allies, or calling for retreat, all given at least 2 variations to avoid endless spam of one phrase. Gameplay is, of course, the most important aspect of the game, and it is excellent. Each class plays very differently from one another, in my experience so far, and each have their pros and cons. The ranged classes are much "safer" in their damage dealing, but melee classes take 30% less damage by default to compensate for their playstyle putting them into the thick of things. The progression of skills and gear from 1-60 is wholly satisfying, as you will always be able to find an upgrade with each new level, whether through a drop in your own game, or through a fellow player that has posted an auction for an item you can't live without. The runes, similarly, unlock as levels grow. The game is designed in such a way that you will obtain a new skill, rune, or passive ability at least once with each level gained, so hitting that next benchmark is always a reward. The joy of random loot is a bit of a double-edged sword. Rare items can be either incredible or subpar, whereas the lesser version (Magic, with blue text) can often outdo the higher tier. While this may be frustrating to some, the concept makes it all the more satisfying when your rare item is rolled with your preferred stats in a high value, keeping the loot hunt constantly alive and invigorating. Thanks to the Auction House, even the items that roll stats you do not like can be turned into gold, and thus traded up to gear you would actually like.

There are many, many good things about Diablo 3. The gameplay is quick and rewarding, cutting down masses of demons and zombies as an unstoppable hero never gets old, and while the invincible feeling begins to wear off in Hell and Inferno, it is replaced with the satisfying feel of overcoming a challenging opponent that has a good chance of dropping some fairly stunning loot. I realize that many people are judging the game based on lag, and the always-online DRM, but it is not core to the gameplay, and while some people will see the lag and network issue as a dealbreaker, it can only improve with time, and in a few weeks I imagine that all of the issues can be resolved. I will not give the game a lasting score based on temporary problems, and many of the negative reviews on this site are being posted out of spite.

By no stretch of the imagination does Diablo III deserve a 0, or even a 5, based entirely on its own merits. As it stands, I am giving it a perfect 10, as I have already been given 65 hours of enjoyment, with many more hours to come.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
