I played ~40 hours of the original D3, and I must say that I was interested in seeing where Blizzard chose to take the game in Reaper of Souls (RoS), and overall while there are some positive changes which have been made they really haven't done enough to give D3 the classic status which its predecessors now enjoy. Onto my main points about the game:

The main changes which were made from standard D3 were increasing the max level cap, adding a new class, adding a new act, changing the way items drop, and adding a new "adventure" game mode. I personally have had some issues with finding others to play with in the game's story mode and at lower levels, making the game a bit lonely compared to what I am used to in vanilla D3.

Increasing the max level cap had the effect of making all of a characters items from pre RoS obsolete, making all previous items obsolete once you hit level cap; this feels annoying in particular if you got badass items from the auction house, but after playing for a while you do get over it (well I did at least). Hand in hand with this is the changes to the drop rates, which have made finding upgrades for your character much easier, as items which drop are much more likely to be usable for which character you are playing. There is also a major increase to the drop rate of unique items, meaning that you will actually see some drop on a regular basis, and the addition of the mystic's ability to customize an enchantment on an item is also very welcome.

For me the biggest change is adventure mode and the increase to the number of events in the game world, which gives you a real incentive to travel throughout the game world and do the many of the most fun activities which the game has to offer. This stands as a vastly superior endgame to vanilla D3's grind act 3 for loot, and for me is the largest improvement on the original. One gripe I have is the enemy density, which appears to have been reduced from the changes made in previous patches.

The plot for the new act V is of the standard which you would expect from the original D3 (so not terrible but nothing to write home about), and the game has exactly zero surprises for you in terms of the larger story, and really has no success in making you give a damn about the events which are taking place in the world. There are some sidequests at the start of act V which have you actually interacting with civilians and guards outside of town, which is a welcome change from the standard of monsters out of town, everyone else in town, but (aside from one notable exception) they have no bearing on any other part of the game. There is also a bit more back story for all of your followers, which gives them some much needed depth.

Overall RoS is an improvement on the original D3, though there are still fundamental problems with the game which will reduce the game's re-playability (for me at least) in the longer term.

The expansion held my interest from the time it took me to get all my LVL60 chars to the new level cap and level my Crusader from 1 - 70 but it is just not enough. I kept holding out hope that RoS would save this game but personally it is just not interesting enough due to lack of character customization and build options. The game is still incredibly unbalanced, as in there is usually only 1 optimal build for each class. My best advice to ARPG fans who liked Diablo 2 and are willing to dump 100's of hours into a game is to not waste your time and play Path of Exile instead!! Expand

They got rid of the Auction Houses and made gear more like WoW where you have to work for it and can't simply trade with randoms. Before, all you needed was money to get good but now you need time and skill. Luck is important too, but with blood shards you can gamble for the item slot you want, so I can get 1-2 of the item I'm looking for per week if I play a few hours a day. After 2-3 weeks, I usually end up with a Best in Slot version of that item. A lot of people don't have that sort of patience, but I enjoy the game and the time I've put in has given me tons of enjoyment.

Also, with the addition of "Greater Rifts" and Leaderboard, it doesn't feel like you're pointlessly grinding for loot anymore. Now you can actually push yourself to higher grift levels and aim to make it to the top 1000 for your class. I recently beat a 37 grift which puts me at about #300 overall in the US for barbs. And the challenge of improving and beating the next level grift keeps me wanting to play more and look for better upgrades. And the legendary gems + hellfire amulet are more cool item additions if you get bored of (g)rifts. Lots to do, you just have to figure out the most efficient ways of doing them.

So yea, if you're looking for an awesome RPG with TONS of sweet loot and lots of classes and builds to play with, look no further. Yes, there are some cookie-cutter builds that seem to perform the best for some classes, but every item is unique so everyone's going to have different variations of the build in the end. Also, some classes can be a lot more fun than others. I love my barb to death whereas DH seemed boring, so make sure you research the classes before investing in one!

PS - The game doesn't really become enjoyable until max level. No one enjoys the plane ride, but it's usually worth the wait :)

Had no resemblance to its predecessor and felt as though the name shouldn’t even be on the game. With time though blizzard manage to get some of their flaws together and bust out this expansion. It is still no where near the glory days of old diablo’s but it is a vast improvement over the diablo 3 release. They have added some end game content and made loot a little more fluid, it has a long way to go but its on the right path.

Gameplay: Fun, solid, fluid, feels clean and looks good. Typical monster slayer game with lots of loot to go around. Improved a lot of aspects from diablo 3 and keeps people entertained. Improvements coming out relatively fast in the form of patches to make sure the game is what the people want. It lacks a lot of creativity though as builds for characters are pretty much cookie cutter. As in only certain builds are viable for endgame content. Also specific items are the best for certain classes. In other words if you want to have top level gear and top level damage you pretty much have to follow in the footsteps of everyone else which makes it kind of depressing.

Overall this game is crazy amounts better than diablo 3 but still needs improvement to be a game that is in the same league as diablo 2 and 1.

The official Diablo 3 General Discussion forums is a very toxic place, but the class forums and communities offer a better experience. Don't play the public games. 3 months into release and Blizzard's still supporting the game and actively adding new content.

If you're a normal person who has a job and social commitments, then this review is for you:

For an expansion pack that only provides 1 additional act and 1 more class, it's definitely not worth the price I paid for it if you just intend to play the game to completion in solo mode.

Blizzard has skewed much of the longevity of the game towards the multi-player experience and the loot hunt. The trouble is that certain design decisions (such as limiting trading, combat mechanics) don't really foster good co-operative gameplay, and the public game experience can be quite unpleasant.

Diablo 3 in general is much different from the first 2 ones. That's not a bad thing, it depends on what you are expecting, and if you are new to the genre, you should buy it along with this expansion, it's not really long but it is entertaining.

The only thing that I would complain is the price, 35 Euros are too much even for a good expansion, but if you enjoyed Diablo 3 then don't

Yes the fifth chapter might not be as strong as the initial story ever was, but the adventure mode makes it a lot more fun to do!

It actually (finally) is rewarding to grind this game and there are numerous ways of getting better gear!
Crafting also has gained a little of it's glory back in this update.
The thing I do like most of this game is the difficulty of staying alive on the higher Inferno levels. One mistake and your dead, makes it feel a lot better when you accomplish killing an elite group, mini boss or boss!

In the end I do not recommend this game to people who love a great story.
For one playthrough (maybe two) it's alright, but after that the story is very thin.

However if you like mindless hack 'n slash and grinding for gear, this game is great!
The combat is great and has pretty deep skill combinations and strategies with gear/skills to do most damage and stay alive!

Overall this game deserves a 7.

The issue is this - intervals where you get no loot. When you hit the loot level (70), you should be rewarded for hunting for loot. As you colect items that increase your power, the time should increase between upgrades. Instead, you get to 70 and are stuck in lower difficulties forever because magic find no longer exists on common items. You cannot increase your odds for finding loot that allows you to progress through the difficulties. You will get a legendary ever 2-3 hours because there is a loot timer. It truly is loot on rails. The problem is far greater in hardcore.

That perfect item progression from previous Diablo games is still missing, but at least we have bounties and rifts...right? Ahem.

Oh, and cinematics? None. Where did Blizzard quality go?
