Simply the Best Franchise Game. The story is very well told, the characters are super charismatic. The songs are extraordinary. The controls respond well. The combat is more frenzied and now there is the possibility of changing your style during the gameplay, not having to choose as in Devil May Cry 3. Devil May Cry is back with gorgeous visuals, gameplay that is incredibly satisfying and an interesting story with distinct likeable characters. The PC port is excellent and this game is a necessity for anyone who is craving some hack n slash fun.

After playing this game to completion as soon as it became available I can safely say that Devil May Cry 5 is one of the best in the series, and one of the best games I have played in general. Everything from the controls and combat to the characters and story are superb. The visuals and environments are also beautiful with many of the textures looking photo-realistic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Capcom, you've outdone yourselves. Ok first off, this is a TRUE sequel and it isn't bad like a certain reboot, looking at you Ninja Theory.

Well jokes aside, this is one of, if not the, best entry in the Devil May Cry series. The story is excellent, characters just feel right, the combat system is smooth. There really isn't much to complain on this game. The only thing I personally would nitpick on is Vergil's facial structure, he looks a little derpy and the dubstep music. But even so, this is not just a game, it feels like true fan-service from Capcom. The dubstep music is only used for combat with Nero, BUT if you feel like you want an old soundtrack from the older dmc games, then you can do just that.

Devil May Cry 5 offers a new way to play Nero with a mechanical arm he loses early on in the game and at first i wasn't convinced but during mid-game i was kind of digging it to be honest. All the arms have different abilities and ultimates and varies the gameplay.

At first I was a bit concerned about how Capcom was going to handle the playable characters in a way that feels natural, but they happily surprised me.

    Verdict & TL-DR:

    Graphics: 10/10
    Gameplay: 9,5/10
    Story: 10/10
    Characters: 9/10
    Music: 9/10

This is the long awaited and theorized DMC game that all the fans have gotten and it lived up to the hype, Graphics are the best they've ever been in DMC without even having a big impact on performance all thanks to the RE Engine. Gameplay was even better that I thought it would be, the story was fantastic, the characters felt right and although i didn't like the dubstep battle music, there was an option to change that and the soundtracks were epic.

    Replay = yes

I once had a lot of trouble figuring which DMC was "The Best". I was very inclined to say DMC 3.
Then DmC by Ninja Theory appeared... and showed a VERY different take on the characters and overall style to the game. It was not a bad game, but not great either.. the characters were... awfully done (from my pov).

A well rounded hack-and-slash DMC style game (duh) with the perfect combination of fairly easy to play but a challenge to master. Gameplay is dynamic with many options and well though-out. On top of that RE engine looks incredible AND it runs extremely well. Bravo Capcom.

Some of the cons are common with all hack-and-slash games, somewhat repetitive mobs and sometimes excessive button 'mashing'. Also I feel like the music was just ok, there was a lot of room for improvement

Even with the flaws, it will be a defining game for not only the DMC series but the genre as well.

Back in 2002 when i finally got my PS2 (took a while to save up money as a 13/14 year old) Devil May Cry was first game i got for it, been psyched about it for a year and was one of the main motivators for me to get a PS2 in the first place.
As i suspected when i finally played it DMC was everything i hoped for, and it instantly skyrocketed to the top of my favorite games list.

As i suspected when i finally played it DMC was everything i hoped for, and it instantly skyrocketed to the top of my favorite games list.
Bar DMC2 which was a "slight" disappointment, DMC games always held a special place in my mind.
DMC reboot wasn't a bad game, on the contrary it was pretty good, alas it was not what fans wanted and what we waited for.
I'm glad to say DMC5 is a return to form for Capcom and for DMC franchise, all the main characters are back with a vengeance, and i can honestly say that the game is everything i've been hoping for from a new main line DMC sequel.

    Graphics 10/10

Not much to say here, RE engine looks incredible, game seems well optimized, and it ran great on my system (Ryzen 2600X, 16GB RAM, GTX 1080, at 3440x1440), only small gripe i had was that game doesn't support ultra-wide (atm) so i had 2 grey bars on the sides of the monitor.

    Audio: 9/10

OST is as expected great, game's main anthem Devil Trigger, which is also Nero's battle music is a departure from usual heavy metal songs. But it fits Nero much better imho.
Rest of the soundtrack especially Dante's battle theme are more in line with older OSTs.
DMC3 OST still stands as best in the series for me, 5 isn't far tho.
Played with English dub, and voice actors did great work, not much else to say, there are some scenes where lip sync doesn't sync very well, but luckily it doesn't detract much from game, and it's doesn't happen very often.

    Gameplay 10/10

Nailed it, and nailed it so much.
Everything just "feels" right, way Nero and Dante control is just like i remember from old games, and any veterans returning should feel right at home in DMC5.
V is a fresh take on combat in DMC where he doesn't fight directly, Instead you control his "pets".
It's weird at the start but you get used to it, altho i quickly found a way to cheat my way to SSS with him and it's rather easy to pull off.

    Story 9/10

I'm rating it within "DMC sphere" of storytelling, anyone who played older DMCs knows that DMC story can be weird to say the least, like a fun B movie.
And that's fine, DMC never took itself very seriously and DMC5 is no exception.
If you are new just relax don't engage your brain too much and enjoy the ride.

Overall I loved every second of new DMC, I'm gonna play higher difficulties now, and hunt some achievements.
And here's hoping Capcom makes a proper DMC6 in a couple years and we don't have to wait 10+ years for a new mainline DMC again.

I can't overstate how beautiful this game looks. They took all the best parts of earlier releases and made a spectacular game in the best DMC tradition. The tutorial is incredibly well done. Newbies will feel at home. There's even a "The Void" practice zone whenever you learn a new move (you can even try out all the moves before you decide on the upgrade for your character, so it is accessible between missions and when you get upgrades). Said another way, you won't be prone to forget a huge list of combos. It is as incremental as you want it to be. If your're new to the series, you get new moves as you progress in the game. Inside the gameplay, even beginners will soon see how to mix moves together. This makes the game an absolute joy to play.

Speaking of which, the combat system is great. There are different settings for beginners to advanced players. Some settings even let the game do combos for you if you physically can't do the combinations of button presses. I do find turning around or changing direction a bit jerky, but I guess they wanted the controls to be very responsive rather than have smooth transitions during quick change of directions. This only happens when you completely change direction, so no big deal.

There are a lot of cutscenes. So if you're not a fan of that, it may be annoying. But that's always been a staple of DMC games. The bosses are interesting. They're not just boss #1, #2, etc. Well, at least the ones I've seen so far. The characters are of course very dismissive of any opponent they defeat because that's their shtick.

As others have said, story is simple and yet keeps you intrigued. I do like the various characters and personalities. This part is extremely well done. Overall, it's fairly linear. There are secret areas and secret mission that you should try to find throughout though.

The games runs very smoothly on 1440p with everything maxed out. Then again, I have 1800X + 1080Ti. The game does not fill ultra widescreen (3440x1440). You just get black bars on the side. Note that it does widescreen just fine. Having said that, I'm reading there is an unofficial ultrawide fix available that I'm gonna try right now.

    Can't recommend this game enough!

This is a competent game. It has likeable characters and a relatively interesting story. The gameplay is okay as well, but it has some quite glaring problems and to be honest, I expected way more based on the reviews.

Some journalists have stated that DMCV has the best combat system in the entire hack & slash genre. I completely disagree with that. In a proper hack and slash game...

...the player should be able to fight effectively against multiple enemies at once. Yet in DMCV, most fights are 1v1 between the player and one enemy NPC, even if there are surrounding enemies in the given area. It feels like a glorified souls-like rather than an actual hack & slash title.

... the player sould have at least as many ranged attacks as close-combat moves, because that way he can fight effectively against multiple enemies that are in the area at different distances from each other and from the player. Yet in DMCV, basically all moves are close-combat moves (even though you can use a pistol, for example), and even the close-combat moves have way smaller range that I've seen in other games (Darksiders, DmC, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Bayonetta, God of War, etc.).

... is supposed to be tough, but fair and should have a combat system that is easy to learn, but difficult to master. The enemies should be fearful and strong but they should also have their weaknesses. For example, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a very tough game, especially on Paladin difficulty, but because the combat system is so excellent, if you master it, you can complete the whole game without ever getting hit - and you can also exploit the weaknesses of the countless different and unique enemies of the game. However, DMCV is stupidly easy even on the hardest difficulty because the A.I. barely do anything at it makes enemy encounters quite boring after a couple of hours.

    ---

The other problem is that because the combat system is very much centered around one on one fights for multiple reasons, there's practically no reason to ever not use the Lock-On system. Yet, the only way to use the Lock-On feature (lock-on enemy target) is to use the Right Bumper button (if you are using an Xbox controller). This makes my hand hurt after a while, it just feels weird to constantly hold that button down, especially the same time that I'm continously doing combos using the X and Y buttons. In other hack & slash games, it's basically a standard in terms of controls is to toggle Lock-On using the Right Stick (click), then switching between targets by tilting that stick to left or right. I don't understand why DMCV didn't use this. It feels just as weird as shooters did on PS3, because you had to use the upper shoulder buttons to aim and fire instead of the triggers.

TL;DR: The combat system feels very limited because as a player, you don't really have the chance nor the tools to fight against multiple enemies at the same time, the game rather chooses to focus on 1v1 fights instead and because of that, the overall combat feels way less satisfying and chaotic. Also, the game is stupidly easy because the A.I. most of the time stands still even on the hardest difficulty so it removes all the challenge and it makes the game boring after a while.

Devil May Cry 5, while seemingly shallow on the surface, conceals its greatest features and true experience for only the dedicated to discover. The satisfaction of finally overcoming a block in the game that held you back for so long is where the real experience lies, and the game demands that you not be weak of heart to reach it. Put in the time and effort that the developers expect of their fans and you’ll truly be able to reap the rewards and see DMC5 for what it is; a truly off the wall, batshit insane romp through the best the genre has to offer.

The culmination of the franchise and so much more. Capcom is still putting up the pressure one notch above, with new mechanics, a renewed gameplay, and a replayability that will make you start the game a second time without losing your smile. The story has matured and a good balance has been found with its three destinies that intersect over the course of the missions, until its apocalyptic final. Only big downside in a game that requires precision in its highest difficulty levels: the camera problems and the targeting system.
