Great game. Cool aesthetic, cool armor, cool weapons. Overall package is a very competent game that I would strongly recommend to most.

I think it still looks and feels pretty good even today. Not one technical problem or crash. Supports ultrawide and higher framerates as well (played at 3440x1440 at 100hz).

The interface, located right in the game, gives a sense of presence. Health indicators are directly on the suit, and the navigation menu opens in the form of a hologram from a handheld computer.
The combat system with cutting off the enemy's limbs is quite original. You can do this with the help of different types of weapons, each of which has two types of attack: standard and alternative. It can also be upgraded, just like your own suit.
The game has many different and original enemies with their own characteristics and tactics. Almost everyone should have their own approach.
The game has a strong and very interesting plot with unexpected twists. The story keeps you in suspense until the very end.
Dead Space is a first-rate video game horror, that definitely deserves attention.

    Great Horror
    Great Guns
    Great Story
But really bad Computer Port. (had to use a mouse and Vsync fix from nexusmods because if you have over 60fps it wont let you go through the first door and the mouse was broken for me)

Go ahead and read the comic and watch the movies.

This game does not feel like its from 2008. Best horror game i have ever played. Developers set the bar so high up that they could not make sequels as good as the first. Gameplay is smooth for a game of its age. Story was great, highly replayable with the military armour. Had little bugs and vsync problems other than that this game is a 9.4 to me.

The gameplay is good throughout the game, you feel distress and sometimes panic stomping on the necromorphs. The soundtrack is satisfactory. Enemy's A.I is ok. Furthermore, the story is incredible. The game rises the tension and slowly reveals a great inversion of expectation. Learning about the markers and how they affect people was one of the best things in the story. The game is linear, but well done. If a game is going to be linear, it needs to have things to see in detail. It's very enjoyable looking at every corner of Ishimura, without knowing what lurks behind the wall. Therefore, Dead Space is one of the best survival horror on the market. It is a must play game. I tend to look at third-person shooter games as a sort of secondary market to the more common first person shooter genre; however Dead Space surprised me. When I was expecting a Hitman: Contracts nostalgia trip, I received a story worthy of publication - and deservedly so with its 7.4GB of size.

Well, only one time I thought "What the hell?" when I entered a vacuum in space and an enemy suddenly hit me from behind a wall, but it didn't scare me. Other than that, often a sudden change in music or a roar from the enemy indicates that you are about to be ambushed. Not to mention that the area you are in will be in lockdown untill all enemies are complete, making it rather easy to know if there are still enemies left or not. The bosses look great, pretty epic. The last time I saw such fun bosses was in Crysis. Overall, the game is pretty enjoyable, and a good gameplay system. Quote: "I don't know about you, but I wanna be able to aim AND side step at the same time. This same problem ruined Resident Evil 4 for me." Are you sure you were playing dead space? You CAN MOVE AND SHOOT AT THE SAME TIME LIKE SPLINTER CELL DAMN IT.. If you have problems with the reticule not moving fast enough, YOU CAN CHANGE THE MOUSE SENSITIVITY IN THE MENU OPTION YOU IDIOT. But even with that said I do agree the control is a bit sluggish and the third person camera angle is a bit wonky expecially when playing this game in a standard 4:3 monitor. I suggest playing this game with a widescreen monitor, I believe the game is designed with that in mind. Now, my opinion. The story for this game borrows heavily from many all too familiar sci-fi horror movies in the past but still manage to make it entertaining and it is decent. The graphic is superb. The environment of the ship is absolutely gorgeous to look. The monsters are so hideous to look at and the animation really made them feel relaistic and they will haunt your dreams for the next couple of weeks. It has all the ingredients for a good survival horror and Dead Space delivers all of them at a high level. Really worth checking out for anyone who like a good scare in the middle of the night. The story is good and contains a few nice twists, the graphics and environment designs are quite nice (I liked the fact that there's no hud), and no need of a super computer. I liked the "no gravity" gameplay, but it can get really confusing as to finding the ground again and since you don't have a wide view (which is okay in small corridors) it is difficult to spot enemies. I found the objective track clever and very useful as it allows you to know exactly where to go. Being able to upgrade your equipment as you wish and to dispose your inventory as you see fit is quite nice. There's about 12 chapters in the game that takes around 1h to complete each.
So all in all, it's not the best game of all time nor is it a very innovative one but it is well achieved and worth playing.

It would make me respect you more then watching the froth come out of your mouths. I am sorry you wasted your money but here is a secret... it's not wasted if you fix what's wrong. I had every one of those issues and solved them all with about 5 minutes of online research. That being said, yes... EA loses rep for such a bad port. But with everything working well the game is scary, fun, pretty to look at with all graphics cranked up to High, ambient occlusion turned on @ 1920 x 1200 rez. My PC is no beast and it handles this game extremely well.

I am not a huge fan of horror games but I am enjoying the atmosphere and the gameplay very much. It says a lot when I turn the lights off and play in the dark when I sit down to run thru some Dead Space. You will have fun providing you can work through the aforementioned bugs in this PC port. It may not be fun to do but it's not hard either, take the time and you will be rewarded with a better experience then the console because, despite what people say... any fps game will be served much better by using a mouse/keyboard then a controller. Dead Space is a good action game. It has a thrilling atmosphere even though it isn't so scary as I supposed it to be. Also dismembering large packs of grotesque monsters is very rewarding. Main drawbacks are controls (you can't use arrow keys to move e.g.) and mouse movement is unwieldy.

I've had a pretty good time with this game, although it's got it's flaws, for the most part it is so well executed they are entirely forgiven.

First things first, there are a few minor technical issues, seemingly more of an issue for some users than they were for me. Sure enough, a common problem with many console ports it seems is V-Sync related mouse lag, a real party pooper. I had it with Deus Ex Human Revolution (just used a 360 controller instead, no lag there) and sure enough I had it with Dead Space, however disabling V-Sync removed the lag and boosted the framerate quite significantly. There are a few jagged edges (the game doesn't allow variable anti-aliasing settings) but it still looks better than it does on the consoles, so I won't complain.

Technical issues aside, there are some interesting 'tributes' to a certain 1999 classic, System Shock 2. Aside from the obvious setting similarities, and occasional gameplay comparisons that could be made, there are very significant parts of plot that are basically lifted from that older game (an entire mission on the hydroponics deck is basically the same as it appears in SS2), which isn't any great sin, but it's indicative of a generally derivative tone for the bulk of the game. The monsters are largely a mixture between the creature effects from John Carpenters film 'The Thing', and the Los Ganados from Resident Evil 4. Again, nothing terribly wrong with this, they are imaginatively rendered and truly gruesome, but still, not particularly original.

The games visuals are stunningly realised, the game is simply gorgeous. The atmosphere is unrelentingly pressurised, making the game deeply tense throughout, with many scares of the typically jumpy variety underpinned by genuine discomfort. The sound design is superb, with a cacophany of terrible screams, moans, rumblings and sounds of all things liquid bursting, popping and spilling everywhere. The weapons, though there are few of them, feel suitably powerful and quite capable all of them at dismembering enemies - though some rather rough physics tends to make body parts and other objects sort of flop and roll around quite comically, the high volume of blood and accompanying squishy noises tends to nullify any distraction this might cause.

The game is a reasonable length, though not particularly long, and reasonably challenging on 'Normal' difficulty, though the learning curve is somewhat steep at the beginning (prepare to die often for the first hour or two), it balances out and eventually becomes perhaps a little easy once you get the hang of managing your weapons and ammunition properly.

Items are at first quite sparse, and upgrades (via 'power nodes') are a slow but sure process for weapons and your suit armour, but later in the game, when weapons are powered up, less ammunition is needed, and so you tend to end up with an abundance of it in my experience. There is something of an imbalance, but it is not dreadful - after all, despite the game becoming less plainly difficult, there are many sections that will still get your adrenaline pounding as some truly horrific creatures come bounding towards you, eyes-a-glowing.

So, a fun game, with some niggly flaws but on the whole there is little that could actually be described as being 'bad' about the game, but it could be more original and there is room for improvement - of which, so far, Dead Space 2 has in some ways definitely fixed, but there are other things that the first game gets right that the sequel does not (I'm past the half-way point already with DS2 after only maybe three or four hours worth - this game is definitely going to be over quickly, whereas DS1 is slower paced and more tense).

A very good game, but perhaps not quite original enough to be a true classic.

As I booted up the campaign and got approximately 4 minutes into the game I began to ask myself, "what sort of mad drunken sailor came up with the controls?" Even with rebinding I found myself wobbling down corridors and frequently pressing keys I'd always attributed as safety keys becoming a pain as Isaac would end up trying to force pull a necromorph towards me. Also as an aside, what sort of game outside of strict RPGs doesn't allow you to jump?! But putting my initial frustrations aside I will say this, Deadspace delivers on the scare while keeping things entertaining enough to mask the generally linear game play. In my first go around of play I found out very early on that ammo and health become a rarity into the later levels and a restart later saw me utilizing the vault much more frequently in the stores to store precious ammo and other goodies for later undertakings. I found that the story-line was very compelling and the few plot twists late in the game, while potentially obvious to somebody more intuitive than myself, were quite welcome and enjoyable in a gaming scene where you can usually see conclusions coming a mile away. The range of weapons was quite good and while I chose not to use them due to the randomization of ammo drops based on your arsenal, I found there were multiple ways to dismember and destroy. Overall once you can get used to the awkward controls (I'd recommend going through the first level on easy to get yourself settled then restarting on a harder difficulty) the story line is interesting enough to keep you playing, the puzzles are just difficult enough for interest but not so hard that you're pulling your hair out trying to figure out what to do, and the game play (controls aside) is a good mix of fright and fight to keep you on your toes. Honestly, I was so curious to find out what happened to Isaac at the end of the first game that I had to go out and buy the second one! Generally a good game for the horror/sci-fi fans out there and the control issues were greatly improved for #2. Expand

DeadSpace1 (PC Version) is a great game, not as good as DS2, because of the gaming control. Watching left and right is not as sensitive as up and down, I wasn't able to fix this. The "console" feeling doesn't matter at all. Overall you have an interesting story and many shocking events. If you like the movie "Event Horizon" you will love Dead Space!

The gun play is great as it limits you with scarce ammo but is rarely frustrating. The main problem that stops me from giving this game a nine or ten is that late in the game the game starts to lose its creepy atmosphere and starts to focus on combat which leads to some frustrations as fighting large groups is awkward. Overall though the game is insanely atmospheric and the world sucks you in and proceeds to frighten the crap out of you. Isaac Clarke is quite literally the unluckiest engineer in the universe, having to fend off the unrelenting hordes of the necromorphs while uncovering a rather macabre cult centered around offing themselves can be taxing. Dead Space provides this premise in one of the more memorable survival horror games of the generation.

The gameplay of Dead Space is centered around Isaac utilizing everyday engineering tools to fight off the necromorphs not by simple chest shots, but by dismemberment which doles out more punishment. Using the third person control scheme, Dead Space's combat is extremely satisfying since every shot feels like it has impact and the dismemberment of enemies is astounding in an audiovisual standpoint. Backing this up is the game's attempt to immerse you with the lack of a distracting HUD. Everything is displayed in real time or displayed on Isaac's person himself, increasing the immersion and tension twofold.

The setting where the game takes place, the USG Ishimura, is a deeply interesting and terrifying place to explore but gods be damned if they don't have half of all the flickering lights in existence. Despite that, it is a believable place where people lived once and takes Isaac into countless memorable places. The necromorphs that inhabit this decrepit setting serves as the real star of Dead Space. They're expertly designed while being just as disturbing. The regenerator in particular served as an exciting setpiece with how it cannot be killed with conventional means forcing you to use the environment to dispose of it. Enemy encounter is well paced throughout the Ishimura although I wished there were a few more enemy types to vary the encounters a slight bit.

The story which serves as the driving force of the game centers around Isaac Clarke navigating the Ishimura in search of his girlfriend Nicole, who is somewhere in the Necromorph infested ship. The story takes cues from films like Event Horizon and the original Alien by instilling a fear of both dread and mystery. While slightly on the predictable in terms of who double crosses who, the plot is enthralling and serves the mood and tone of the story incredibly well. Although I didn't enjoy the ending as much as I would like considering it ends too much like a horror film. The layer of intrigue and memos scattered about covey just enough information to the player to prod them about without getting too exposition heavy, though at one point the supposed villain delivers an unnecessary exposition dump. The characters that inhabit Dead Space deliver some eye rolling lines but behave appropriately for the given situation and their voice acting is well above average.

Despite the number of praises I might have for the game, Dead Space fails to deliver in one key area: horror. The first few hours of Dead Space are without a doubt excruciatingly terrifying given that this is the player's first encounter with the Necromorphs supplemented by the phenomenal sound design, which is an excellent mix of ambient and panic. However, the game loses much of its horror towards its conclusion not as a result of non-terrifying enemies, but rather how you encounter them and the tools the game gives you. Playing Dead Space on normal was shockingly easy to get by and because of that, enemies don't terrify you if you don't fear dying in-game. This is added by the fact the game throws enemies at you like mad. It's important to convey horror by pacing the horror to build suspense, and instead Dead Space throws enemies at you whenever possible. It becomes predictable to guess where they may come about and because of this repetition, the horror aspect become almost a distant reality and makes way for the fun of the game, which becomes its saving grace.

Dead Space failing in this cornerstone should not detract players from enjoying one of the finer survival horror games in a long time. The gameplay is excellent and gratifying backed by an upgrade system that encourages a second run (though the lack of changing difficulties is a bummer). The sound design is pitch perfect. The plot is interesting and ambitious, which caters an awesome setting to explore. Dead Space more than makes up its shortcoming by being that game in the unorthodox survival horror game which prioritizes fun over scares, and I'm more than happy for that.

You start the game out on a rescue mission, and you crash on a giant ship, you quickly find out that some crazy stuff is going on, and by quickly, I mean like, 3 minutes in and you’re ready to go home.
    Dead space is absolutely terrifying.
The game is dark, takes place in this massive ship you crash landed on and this ship is crawling with creepy alien creatures.
They come out of nowhere, it’s almost impossible to tell when or when they aren’t going to come after you.
They crawl out of vents, you’ll see them and think great time for a showdown, and nothing happens, or you’ll completely miss the vents on the ceiling and one will hop down on top of you.
    You never get used them.
Maybe eventually you do... but as soon as you do, they fix that.
The terror is nonstop from beginning til end.
These encounters are so terrifying because they are spread out perfectly.
You spend more time relaxed running through dark halls than you do actually fighting.
You can fight off these creatures with guns or stomp them to death.
There are a variety of schematics you’ll find on the ship that you can take back to the store to purchase a new suit upgrade or a new weapon.
You can carry up to 4 weapons at a time, and more ammo and med packs as you level up your suit.
You can also collect power nodes to level up your weapons.
Dead Space does a great job of giving you plenty of ammo while at the same time making you feel like you hardly have any, always keeping you tense.
The downside though is that Dead Space is insanely repetitive.
It’s hard to notice for the first 4 chapters of the game because the world feels so fresh, and you can’t help but smile at the influence modern games have borrowed from dead space, but all 12 chapters is nonstop follow the line, shoot things in your way, press the button, come back, do this about 3 or 4 times, get to the train, repeat chapter after chapter after chapter.
Then they add in 0 gravity sections which can be pretty cool, but it quickly becomes boring and seems far too gimmicky as it was way over used.
1 or 2 awesome 0 gravity sections would’ve been plenty enough.
The ability to slow time and use telekinesis does make some sections a tiny bit more interesting and there are a handful of bosses in dead space, but none of them really stuck out of felt special to me.
Dead Space is a horror game classic way ahead of its time and a must play for horror fans.
I found the game insanely addictive at times, even though it tends to drag things out just a little too long.

The gameplay is inspired by resident evil 4, but with a crucial factor which is the dismember system, this was a great deal for the game's physics and to kill the enemies.
Visually the game still holding great in 2019, specially it's lighting and shadows in real time.
Off course the problem with the game is that the further you progress into the game, nearly to the ending you have a lot of ammo and have upgraded most of your weapons, so basically now you are overpowered and necromorphs are no threat at all.
But, it is a really scary title that is worth trying if you want to be scared.

Great game, very intense settings, a lot of relatively scary moments. This is a game that really got me hooked up, even though I am not really a fan of horror type games.

I really liked this game. It was a horriable game. But there is one think I do not like. Although it was very big creature , too easy to kill it. It had just a few action movement and two parts of yellow spores. I expected more harder fight then second boss in this game. I am very disappointed. BBecause of this I gave 8 points

Quite impressive. Great visuals, that still good in 2022, good sound, shooting and fighting system, intense gameplay, game gives you a couple of moments to think(not hard). But, i would prefer less banal story and less standard missions, with twists maybe

To fix this just set your graphics to medium during level 1 and when youre fighting Dr. Mercers monster and you should be alright. The game also holds your hand a lot which is quite annoying because at parts it really doesnt leave much to the imagination. This also makes the game somewhat easy, even when I played on hard. Its still very spooky however, and I enjoyed it so much I beat it in only 2 days! I highly recommend to horror fans and gamers alike! Expand

Çıkışından 13 yıl sonra bile hala oynanabilen pek az shooter oyunu vardır. Dead Space de onlardan birisi. Hatta yakında Resident Evil 2 gibi bir remake'i çıkacakmış.

I also want to mention necromorphs, which will be numerous throughout the game. Some are fast , bouncy, others are strong, and there are still those that, when neutralized, drop larvae that swarm trying to send the main character to the next world.
I also want to note and, he's pretty good, the necromorphs are trying to get you wherever you are through ventilation or some other way.

The weapon in this game plays the role of protecting the main character from his opponents, it is unusually executed here, especially I remember: a plasma cutter, a contact beam, a disk ripper. Some operate at short distances, some at long distances, and others have a larger coverage area than others, you can also prescribe a two to a necromorph and trample it into the floor with your foot.

Pumping is done quite normally here, but there is one detail, to get a Power Node you will have to sweat a little , the modules are not so easy to get because of what they become valuable .

I also want to mention physics, it's pretty good, especially for a long time, almost all objects have it, like necromorphs' limbs, boxes and so on.

Throughout the entire passage , the game keeps the player in suspense , which is also pleasing , and especially when a giant tentacle grabs you and you have to shoot back from it .

The atmosphere here is on a level, it feels like you are in the future, somewhere far away in space on the station.

Also , the gameplay is complemented by the Stasis Module , Kinesis Module and the moments where gravity disappears , the Stasis Module allows you to partially stop an object or an enemy for a while . By the way, it was with the help of this module that I was able to defeat the mini boss at the end of the game.

These were aspects that I liked , and now
I will say that I didn't really like it :

The physics of the main character's behavior is very slow , I understand that the main character can't run very fast , but in my opinion it could be done a little faster. Interaction with objects is also not very well implemented , but tolerable , as for objects in boxes on the floor : it was annoying that it was impossible to quickly pick up an object from the box, if you were standing to the left or right of the box , you have to stand right in front of the box and only then you will be able to pick up an object, and especially it was infuriating then when a necromorph is chasing you , and you try to open it along the way and wait for it to open , and when right in front of him , hoping to get an object , you are thrown back by a necromorph ( .

The plot, in principle, is not so bad, but it did not go to me, because the plot turns are readable and you can predict what will happen next (in my opinion)

Summing up, I want to say that I liked the game, it's one of those games after which I had the worst impressions . I think this game will be remembered for a long time .

    Total:
    8/10
(minus 2 points for the plot and the physics of the main character's behavior)

A NORMAL JOURNEY INTO THE SPACE

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
The game has been played on Xbox 360 and completed in every mode it offers, eventually achieving platinum trophy.

    QUARANTINE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED:
The game starts by introducing, thanks to a cutscene, the game world setting. Immediately the player finds himself on the giant planet cracker USG Ishimura, a large spaceship used to dig into unknown planets' ground. Apparently no life forms are visible on the ship; this leads shortly thereafter to the player's discovery of the game's main encounter, the Necromorphs, deformed and repulsive creatures that would appear to be generated from the corpses of the former inhabitants of this ship. From there on, the adventure will be divided between uncovering the mystery of these absurd entities and managing to escape this spaceship safely.

    DISMEMBERING NECROMORPHS:
The gameplay of the first Dead Space is that of a true Horror action, and I place the word horror first intentionally, since the focus of the game is on the horror part, as opposed to the third chapter of the trilogy; the gloomy atmosphere of the environment, the noises and cries produced by the Necromorphs rumbling through the hollowness of the spaceship, the rivers of blood flowing through the floors and those horrific scenes of death that Isaac will unfortunately have to endure in the adventure make the definition of the game genre clear. Right from the start, the player is launched in a chasing sequence, running from these monstrosities and then trying to find a way to succeed in counter attacking them, using various weapons unlockable as the game progresses through collectible schemes. The variety of weapons is quite decent for a game of this genre, and gives a lot of freedom to different styles of play. The game difficulty is neither too exaggerated to make it too horror, nor too easy to make it pure action. There are some environmental puzzles present, but they are quite simple and intuitive enough to become a feature of the game; there are also some rather interesting zero-gravity sections for a 2008 game.

    HOME IS FAR:
Graphically Dead Space is a gem of the horror genre. This setting in space turns out to be one of the most beautiful seen so far, as well as one of the most inspired. The use of lights and shadows, Necromorphs passing through walls, dislodging cables and walls, and the proper use of color gradations make the game extremely immersive and scary. Let us be clear, this is not a horror game dedicated to jumpscare as it relies heavily on atmosphere, as already pointed out. The aesthetics of the various enemies and corpses also make it more gore and not very reassuring. Finally, there are a lot of death animations present; almost anything in the game that can kill you will delight the player with customized and very distinctive death scenes at times.

    HEARING NOISES:
Dead Space excels here as well, using sound to add the excitement that the visual side cannot; the fear of approaching footsteps or behind a door, the frightening noises heard in the background, and even the frightening silence of the void give an essential addition to the final composition. The very accuracy of the resonant audio in space is also excellent. Little gem is the use of a very apt song in the game intro and trailer.

    Achievements:
The achievements point turns out to be rather simple in this chapter of the trilogy, complete the game on normal difficulty, then do it in hardcore (with saves fortunately) and only with the gun. At least personally I found it extremely fun as an achievement. If this is frustrating for you, avoid thinking of getting the platinum trophy for the two sequels, because those will turn out to be hell on earth.

    BUT WHY 8?

    PROS:
The game boasts numerous merits that defined a branch of the horror genre and in some ways are unmatched to this day; the sublime aesthetics combined with excellent level and audio design creates a near perfect symbiosis. The game is also really long for the genre and provides many diverse hours of gameplay.

    CONS:
A couple of cons of the game are certainly the absence of special modes besides mere difficulty differences, something added later in the sequels, rightly so. Also, the clunkiness of the game's movements could be a small problem, which, however, is justifiable being the first title. Finally, the extreme difficulty in upgrading the various weapons, several playthroughs being required to complete them, leads to fatigue for those who want to upgrade them all.

Underwhelming. It started out with a lot of potential and slowly leveled out in mediocrity. The way the controls operate is different but highly functional. The angle at which the camera is set above the right shoulder makes it extremely difficult to accurately orient yourself behind objects and usually had me moving about a foot too far to the left. Now usually this isn't a problem, Underwhelming. It started out with a lot of potential and slowly leveled out in mediocrity. The way the controls operate is different but highly functional. The angle at which the camera is set above the right shoulder makes it extremely difficult to accurately orient yourself behind objects and usually had me moving about a foot too far to the left. Now usually this isn't a problem, but when that one foot is say...in front of a meteor shower that kills you instantly or in front of the exhaust from a spaceships main thrusters; it gets to be annoying reloading the game two or three times because the insight that maybe you need perspective to gauge distance effectively to not die didn't occur to the developers. The visuals are very good in this game, it offers some very unique and tense environments you'd be hard pressed to see recreated elsewhere; the Zero-G segments are very cool and very accurate as is the vacuum segments. The sound is stellar in this game, I bring this up next because the vacuum segments are almost completely soundless, you can only hear your own breathing and some of the vibrations from your weapons on the outside of the suit. the rest of the sound production is extremely well done; from the horror orchestration to the scratching of claws behind double thick bulkheads it'll test your surround sound very well. Unfortunately, the worst part of the game is probably the storyline; it consists of a reason to bring you to the "big scary space ship" and the rest is composed of what awful place you have to go to find a computer component to open the next door. Any character development is split between the two bookends on either side of the actual game. I actually forgot why the main character was in this situation by the time I got to the end because it's never mentioned again until practically before the credits roll...and I beat the game in slightly less than eight hours on medium. The one furiously aggravating part about this game is that you are continuously separated from catching the "bad guy" by various windows throughout the game, CONSTANTLY. You will exit a room you just fixed only to the have the door lock and the "bad guy" appear on the inside of the room destroying everything you just did and belittling you while he does it and you just have to play along, criminally annoying. The game takes place in outer space, on a derelict spaceship, where savage monsters have overrun it completely. The game definitely has some unexpected moments popping up every now and again and there is an intense atmosphere present, but I won't say that the game is over the top terrifying or anything. In fact it feels more like an action shooter than a horror game. Perhaps the thing that I liked the most about Dead Space is its very unique weapons which you use to kill the monsters with, weapons such as the Line Gun, that shoots a thin slice of energy to cut monsters' limbs off; the Ripper, that brings out a rapidly spinning saw disk to propel through anyone who comes too close; the Force Gun, that shoots a powerful close-ranged shockwave that knocks everything out of its way, and some others. The game also utilises some RPG elements, in that you get to pick up special power nodes throughout the missions and then you get to use the futuristic work bench to use these nodes to make your weapons and armor suit stronger. So I'd say these are the major strengths of the game - unique guns, some RPG elements, intense atmosphere. There is a bit of a story as well, but it sort of always stays on the background. Lastly I'll just mention that I came across two in-game bugs which forced me to have to reload from a previous save point, and that was only in a single playthrough and was sort of annoying. And another slightly annoying thing was that some of the puzzles were a bit too bland. From what I've heard, Dead Space 2 is supposed to be better, so I hope they've fixed some of this game's shortcomings. Expand

  2. Overall, Dead Space is an extraordinary game with tons of shock value and action to whet any fan's appetite for some time, and with a campaign that lasts a steady 10-12 hours, that’s plenty of time to get lost aboard the Ishimura.
