TL;DR: You're an engineer in a spaceship who has to dismember crewmates-turned-murderous-horde. One of my all time favorite games.

Dead Space puts you in the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer as part of a small crew heading out into deep space to help repair a mining vessel who sent out a distress call. The game takes the survival-horror genre and flips it on its head...or, more specifically, off its head. Like a typical zombie survival horror, the members of the spaceship which you're there to repair have all been transformed by some unknown force into horrible mutated facsimiles of life. The twist here, however, is twofold:
    1. You don't play as some combat-hardened soldier or a police officer or other witty, battle-ready bloke. You play as an engineer. Your department is brains, not brawn. The feeling of despair you get of being out of your depth, of resolve in using your brains to survive, and of sheer relief and exhausted elation when you eventually reach the end of your journey are that much more palpable because any one of us would be just as unprepared and just as lucky to make it through this nightmare as our silent protagonist.
    2. Instead of shooting enemies in the head for massive damage, the enemies in this game have to have their limbs shot off. Instead of a pea shooter and a shotgun, you get a laser cutter and a chainsaw. Instead of stopping when their heads are gone, these undead horrors will keep coming until they are incapable of locomotion. This makes the enemies themselves infinitely more terrifying, as you can't just cluster your shots towards their heads but have to individually hack away at every single individual limb of every fast-running hell spawn headed for your delicate face.

This game nails the atmosphere, nails the combat, and nails the character. Whatever Isaac is feeling, you're feeling. Every enemy killed feels like a small victory. And getting away alive from this feels like a true accomplishment. I won't compare this to the newly-release remake, since I haven't played it, but this game has gone down as one of my top 10 personal favorites.

I'm going to spoil the very beginning of the game in this comment, but this part of the game reflects the entire game well. The beginning of the game is calm with a vague ominous feeling. This feeling is eased by the conversation between the crew members of the ship you're on. Various things are wrong with the ship your crew has come to repair, such as the absence of a ship captain or flight crew, but your groups leader is confident that everything is fine, and his voice acting and dialogue effectively reassure the player. Your crew begins to investigate the ship. It is empty. Your character, some kind of ship engineer, recieves his orders to get to work on repairs, your crew is there to repair, not investigate. You follow commands and are temporarily seperated from your group by a large glass window. Suddenly, the lights cut out and the doors around your crew lock. Horrifying, mutated monsters break through the vents below your crew. The lights are flickering on and off so you can only catch glimpses of the assailants, but those glimpses are enough to let you know that your crew doesn't stand a chance. They scream for you to run, and that is all you can do. The monsters hear you open the door as you try to escape. One of them breaks through a vent in the ceiling and starts to chase you. You run as fast as you can through the ship, making a break for the nearest elevator. As you run you can hear the creatures claws hit the ground directly behind you. It is clearly starting to gain on you. You finally make it to the elevator and turn around to slam the A button to close the door. You get your first full look at the creature. It looks like a human, only all of its limbs have been extended and the bones in its arms have formed into massive, razor sharp blades. It has no skin anymore and the muscles, bones, and blood are clearly visible. Its face is monstrous. The creature slashes at you and knocks you back into the elevator as the doors close. The creature pounds on the doors. This is where I breathed a huge sigh of relief. About five seconds pass. A bloody blade stabs through the slit between the elevator doors. Another blade follows. The doors are pried open to reveal the same creature that was chasing you. The doors lock into the open position. You know you're going to die. The creature knows it too. He pulls back his arms and juts out his head into the elevator, letting out a hideous scream. Suddenly the doors slam shut and smash the creatures neck. Its head falls into the elevator to lay next to your feet. The elevator reaches its destination. You don't know if your crew is alive, and you don't believe you will be alive for long. You set out to find a way to defend yourself, knowing full well that if one of those creatures finds you you are as good as dead. Expand

This game has made excellent use of the Unreal 3 Engine. It looks amazing but doesn't place any strain on my hardware (8800GT). In fact, it even let me record a full-resolution 1280x720 video in fraps without taking a noticeable fps hit. The atmosphere is what really does it for this game. I think it even gives games like Silent Hill 2, Doom 3 or STALKER a run for their money atmosphere-wise. The lighting is spot-on, the slightly warm blurry tinge to the edges of things works well. Graphically, this game isn't just great because it uses a modern engine and modern graphics. It isn't just that it's a high resolution or there's lots of anti-aliasing and cheap tricks going on. The developers clearly understand how to use lighting to set the mood. The sound is amazing...the music is spot-on and there were some genuinely frightening moments in the game. It's overall a very disturbing game that really brings to mind movies like Event Horizon. They've got the horror in space thing down pat here. As for the plot, I don't really care too much. Yeah, some of the other characters are a little mundane, but it's really really great single-player fun. Expand

It also has a nice monster variety that requires you to use all your skills ( stasis and kinetics ) and a variety of weapons not just stick to one weapon.

Add to that cool segments that break the typical gameplay ( zero-G, Vacuum, Asteroids shooting and even more mini-games ), ad the tightly engineered sound design ( probably one of the very few games that uses sound effect perfectly ) and you have a very fulfilling, immersive and engaging experience.

And while the tasks also have variety some of them get slightly repetitive ( Issac fix that, Issac fetch this, ... ) i felt at some point that i'm an errand boy, but still i enjoyed it very much cause every task requires you to face different difficulties and obstacles to do it.

So the game is really awesome and enjoyable but there is still room for more improvements and additions, more varied locations ( like the colony ) more mission variety and mini-games, more complex puzzles, et etc ... i hope DS2 will build on DS an improve all the good things in it ... if it did it will be a fantastic game just like DS is.

To enjoy "Dead Space" put the difficulty on the highest you can possibly manage (I played on hardest, best feel), get a good headset/speaker set and sit back, relax and get scared. I will admit, the game did drag a little on the end and sure the controls did take a little getting used to, but after all of this, if you look deep into it's core (like the Resident Evil 4 port to the pc) it's an amazing game. The scares are often great, the atmosphere is dark, grim and the entire feel of the game is just described in two words: "Insanity" and "Loneliness". Just to be clear too, Dead Space 2 is not the same type of game. Dead Space 2 is a 7/10 for me. What they did with Dead Space 2 is that they took everything Dead Space did very, very well... And dulled it down. The feeling of being alone with nobody else around, it's gone in Dead Space 2. The very creepy and dark atmosphere, it's still there, just not that much, instead of being in an "abandoned" space ship you are in Dead Space 2 in one where the outbreak has just started. So my advice is; Pick up Dead Space 1 for all the scary and awesome bits and then get Dead Space 2 for the action.

Expect lots of gory death in Dead Space. Expect to be scared in Dead Space. Expect a memorable story. Expect exactly what it's title says: Dead. Space.

Also, there two unique features I absolutely do love (and I hope you will, too) in this game: zero-gravity and vacuum.
Alas, the protagonist doesn't say anything along the game, whereas other people constantly say "Go there, make that," etc. Well, this is not the first game with a dumb hero, so I'm fine with that.
Bottom line: if you love horror-action games, you should try this one.

It was a breath taking sci-fi horror game. The game left you with only tools that you can found in the ship in order to survive the madness that is happening. Although I'm having little problem with my mouse sensitivity, but soon after get it fixed, the game just run amazingly. DEAD SPACE emphasizes sci-fi horror coupled with action, while its sequels increasingly prioritize action.
Most of the time you are alone, stalking dim corridors, while piecing together what happened by text and audio logs. There's tons of necromorphs (hostile alien race and main "monsters" to kill in DEAD SPACE) to mutilate along the way - no headshots here, to effectively kill the necromorphs you need to shoot off their limbs.
Isaac, the player character spends most of the time in his space suit, which displays his health - the game has no HUD! His weapon arsenal mostly consists of multi purpose tools that a mechanic/engineer (Isaac's profession) would have and the "ammo" count is displayed on the weapon itself. This is just brilliant.
What I did NOT like is the controls: it was designed with consoles in mind and the mouse lags. This is really bad in some timed areas where you need to navigate zero gravity areas while running out of oxygen. This is why DEAD SPACE is not a 10/10 for me.

I got interested in this game by an interview with the dev glen schofield in ars technica youtube channel, which detail about the game sound and HUD design.

And i got a blast playing this game, i didn't give this game 10/10 only because of the story (which is more about the objective) and some section in the game, namely the zero-g, boss fight (big bosses i mean, that expand a whole room) and that damn turret section

Aside from that, the game is goddamn art, and one of the game i replay the most .

Starting with the HUD which is, to this day, is revolutionary. instead like most other game where the HUD just slapped in the screen, dead space implement HUD on the game element itself (ammo count on the gun itself, health bar on the back of isaac, inventory UI is projected like hologram), which help you immerse into the game world and boy oh boy, when you got immerse, the scare factor is payoff really well

Horror in this game is done well, not some cheap jumpscare although there are few jumpscare in this game, the implementation is well executed.
From the environment that tell you something terrible and wrong happen to this place, audio logs, and the sound design *chef kiss*, creates a uneasy and tension feeling as you play the game,
    The horror not only come from the environmental and sound design, but also from the gameplay aspect;
ammo can be scarce and you need to be creative in killing your enemies to conserve ammo, when you go to a shop or upgrade station, the game doesn't pause it create a sense of unease and urgency, and often time, you have to fight in the dark where your flashlight only turn on when you aim with your weapon, which limit your movement

Gun in this game feels satisfying, when you miss your shot and hear that gunshot not hitting the flesh of your enemy (once again, chef kiss sound design) it can be panic inducing and make you lose your **** but when it does hit, the sound is rewarding to listening ears and give you that courage to engage more with the absolutely horrifying enemy.
Speaking of the enemy, the enemy has alot of variety from all shape and sizes, with many different way to **** you up. The design is also great, and their sound is just **chef kiss**, very horror.

Level design is intricate and interconnected from place to place, and often time, you back track to someplace you already been, sometimes with surprises because kids like surprises.
This level design supported by 3D Map that you can access via your Inventory HUD, but this feature often overshadow by the marker / GPS feature (idk how to call it) that show you a projected line in the game world that show the optimal route to finish your objective, i think it would way more fun to rely on the 3D Map and figure out the way yourself.

The only negative in this game are the story, its good don't get me wrong, but isaac just do errand mostly (get the power on, engine on, etc), and i guess, well, isaac is an engineer after all.
Also how the game teaches you certain mechanic, especially about how to kill the enemy more efficiently is like your mother yelling at you 24/7, character in the game explained it, audio logs also explain it, and the environmental design tell you too. You don't have to tell me thrice (that is how many i could count)
And some section like the turret one, feel less like a horror and more like action, but the section isn't last that long and there's only 2 of them, but i still feel like that section is little out of place from the horror atmosphere.
Zero-G section is also kinda disorienting, although this is fixed in the sequel, DS 2 and 3.
Although dead space isn't necessarily horror 100%, because it implement some action game element into the game (such as quick health regen with specific key), i think the strongest aspect in dead space is dread, suspension, and tension.

The negativity doesn't ruin the experience tho, its just my opinion and that negative aspect i mention doesn't ruin the experience at all, it just not my thing.

    In conclusion / TLDR:
Play this game, its on my Top 5, masterclass audio / sound design, great gunplay and gameplay, environmental storytelling is very well done, every aspect in the game is well thought and implemented flawlessly with minor thing that bug me (variety of objective and some section that i already explain above)

my suggestion is put some headphone to get the maximum dread experience
