Dead Space 2 is not as scary as Dead Space 1 is, IMHO. Though it has its own merits: Isaac can now speak (not only just scream, as in Dead Space 1), and his nightmares about Nicole are just wonderful! Also, the speed flights through the vacuum are nice, too. Needless to say, the zero-gravity and vacuum features are still there, which is cool.

This game truly serves the purpose of being both horror and action game. The new game mechanics make the character able to move more naturally and the game is more responsive than the previous one. The game has a lot of cool new features but without sacrificing much of the old content in the previous game.

Dead Space 2 is what every sequel should strive to be: better than its predecessor and able to stand on its own as a great videogame.

Titan Station provides a much larger and richer setting than the Ishimaru and allows the story more scope and depth. To me its one of the best and most fully realized sci-fi environments in any game. Isaac also graduates from silent protagonist to fully voiced character which adds greatly to the story. My only complaint is that the game comes in a bit short at around 8-9 hours. I think that games which are sold as mainly single player experiences should be at least over 10 hours, this isn't COD. Expand

Dead Space 2 is in some way indentical to Dead Space 1, but it has a number of new things that manage to uplift Dead Space 2 from Dead Space 1. One thing that really made the game for me where those interactive cutscene things, just amazingly well-made.

The character now moves much more relaxed. Do not feel the strange (in a good sense of the word) character weight. The different feel of the movement is the first noticeable change.

The locations we visit are now much more varied. The graphics seem slightly tweaked (a bit more colourful, less gloomy brown). Environmental riddles, although they are straightforward, are satisfying—a lot of new solutions and references to the previous part. The locations are fascinating.

There is more combat in this part. It's more action-packed. There are more opponents, and there is a greater variety of opponents. There are also more types of weapons and available upgrades - it made me slightly overwhelmed, but in the end, I was able to choose the ones that suited me best.

It is also possible to unlock different types of suits and unique versions of weapons, but I haven't played long enough to unlock and check everything. I am not a completist.

A few frustrating things, but it's possible that I played poorly. 1. Sometimes I ran out of ammo - entirely, and I had to run; 2. The return of the immortal opponent didn't heal - in the first part, I didn't like it either; 3. Sometimes there were so many opponents on the screen that I practically shot blindly.

The DS3 is already downloading when I write this review. I can not wait.

Like really really dark compared to the first game. So, you actually have to use the flashlight that is given to you to survive. What this game excels at is the atmosphere I talked about, unlike the first game where majority of the time you're onboard Ishimura, you're now at one of the stations in Saturn's moons. A LOVELY SPACEWALK AMONG NECROMORPHS

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
The game has been completed multiple times and in all difficulty levels present, as well, the platinum trophy has been achieved. It has also been tested at both 30 fps and 60 fps.

    EXTRACTION:
Unlike its predecessor, Dead Space 2 throws the player immediately into the middle of the action. In the first few minutes of the game, the story of the original is briefly hinted at with a nice cutscene following that brings up the beautiful necromorphs that clearly begin to slaughter anyone breathing inside the facility. Clearly, as is the first chapter, a chasing sequence will begin from which the player must escape unharmed, or nearly so, and then learn the game's first basic mechanics useful for mere survival. These are brilliantly placed in rapid sequence, making their learning and combined use, much more intuitive.

    FLYING THROUGH THE SPACE:
The gameplay of the game, as an excellent sequel to an already established still excellent game should do, brings back all those mechanics already present in the original, adding, as one would expect, new weapons, enemies and puzzles. The fluidity of movement has been greatly improved, making both dodging enemies, and catching them, from enemies, faster and smoother (Small note to Xbox Game Pass and PC, which make with 60 fps gameplay borderline to modern gaming). One of the big differences is the improvement of the Zero-G system, now adjusted for smoother and less restricted free movement, and consequently the addition of combat sequences and puzzles appropriate to the new mechanics.
The presence of new weapons of course is not to be ruled out, including the Javelin, a powerful spear-shooter capable of piercing enemies and then detonating them; the Seeker rifle, a high-caliber sniper rifle; the force gun, useful for throwing enemies against walls and keeping them well away and the Detonator, a simple grenade launcher. The game then has several difficulty levels as in its predecessor, including the infamous Hardcore Mode, which, however, will now be tied to a maximum of 3 possible saves for the player, making it a great challenge for any player. The reward for this feat will be the world-famous Pew Pew gun, also known as Devil's Horns or Hand Cannon, a baseball cheer mitt capable of one-shotting virtually any creature in the Dead Space world. The new enemies are many, and they go to highlight everything that might have been missing on Dead Space.

    THE SUN NEVER SHINES:
Visually Dead Space 2 also comes across as more arrogant than the original. By not being tied to a single spaceship design, the designers had much more field in which to express their talents, creating huge space cities, moon bases, deep space flight sections, and even a few goodies for those who played the original. The graphics turn out great for the year of release, and because of that it has managed not to age. Let alone the wonderful designs of the new weapons, characters, and enemies, which always look impeccable.

    SUFFOCATING SILENCE:
Everything that is already present in Dead Space 1 applies here. To make a long story short, the audio is always perfectly dedicated to what it's supposed to achieve, whether it's the suffocating silence of space, or the swarming noises of necromorphs in the ducts, or the heartbreaking screams of dying commoners, Dead Space 2 always gets it right, setting the atmosphere that every horror game should have.

    BUT WHY 9?

    PROS:
Dead Space 2 is the sequel in every way to its predecessor. Valueting the original an 8, cannot help but getting the sequel a 9, improving on or maintaining virtually all of the merits and eliminating most of the flaws. The gameplay is still fun even after multiple runs, even just dismembering necromorph bodies is highly addictive. The story is a continuation of the first, and it is much more extensive, explaining facts unknown in the first and giving the basis for the third. Objectively Dead Space 2 is a great game in the Horror genre and an expansion of the already established first Dead Space.

    CONS:
The path toward Action. This is what you feel when playing Dead Space 2, that middle ground between a true horror and a third-person action shooter. Obviously for those who have played the third chapter it will be clear why, it bridges the two genres. This is obviously a flaw that , however extreme, led to the downfall of the third chapter, and the subsequent closure of the development team, Visceral Games. Also, a second flaw, the game turns out, because of its size and setting, to be much more alive. This might be a pro for some, but in a horror game where the loneliness of the space is the focal point it goes to take away that side of eeriness that the first one had.

They are absolutely fine once you've turned v-sync off, vastly improved over DS1, mouse+kb work great. Now the game itself - What's GOOD: It is indeed a fantastic game. The environments and scenery are some of the best I've seen in a game, the way you learn to interact with the environment, and in doing so solve an array of puzzles (none of which are too puzzling but feel rewarding none the less), is truly well thought through. The story is as good, if not better, than the first game and there's never a bit where you feel disinterested. It's the story that keeps you wanting to hear all of the audio and text logs as they leak little extra tid bits of information to you, none of which you need to read to progress but because they give you little extras as to how people on the station reacted to the outbreak, always adding to the story and keeping it flowing. Of course shooting the mutated crew-members is fun through-out and the variety that the game throws at you keeps it fresh. The bosses are also far more fun than in the first game and whilst still not as challenging as getting rushed by a mob of red necromorphs, provide fights which give a nice level of satisfaction. The new Spitter enemy as well as the raptors are enjoyable too - some of the best fights were against a pack of raptors as they peak around corners and dart between cover, before rushing head on at you - it really created some tense moments. The game isn't as 'scary' as the first, although I didn't find the first game particularly scary - however I would say it's just as tense and creates some great atmospherical tension. I also like the fact they've gone for less horror and more action, it shows and makes for a better game. The new anti-grav sections are really well made and are an improvement over the first. I also thought the game as a whole, including the characters script, was well written. What's BAD: Well, first of all I wish they would realise that enemies you can't kill aren't fun. Much like in the first game *SPOILER* towards the end there is one who just keeps regenerating and all you can do is stasis it and run away, until 15 minutes later where you finally escape it. I don't know if others enjoy this aspect, but I found it thoroughly irritating in both games and as soon as I saw it appear again in DS2, felt a little annoyed that I would have to go through the irritation of it again. It's not hard, just irritating. */SPOLIER* Another thing is when you get mobbed from all angles with little hope other than using several med-kits. A lot of the time when wave after wave is sent at you, it's exciting and with some skilled shooting you can make it out without a scratch. However, there are other times where you have no option other than to spam kits and shoot. Which brings me to my next criticism, being that life/death felt very much an all or nothing experience. You would either come out of something unscathed or with very little damage - or be reloading the game because you got instakilled from behind without even knowing anything was there. There seemed to be little inbetween. I mentioned that some of the new enemies were pretty cool additions, but some aren't. There are new baby necros which crawl along the walls and explode when you shoot the sack on their back. I don't know if they're meant to be creepy but they just look ridiculous and provide no challenge. The same goes for the child necros, they're pretty cool but one hit kills and provide no challenge. Quicktime events are an annoyance, pressing the same button and making it determine the outcome of a wrestling match isn't very enjoyable - perhaps if they made it so you had to press a sequence of buttons or something of the sort it would be better. The attempt at making the small cutscenes through-out the game with Isaacs girlfriend scary, fall flat on their face - and again feel like it's trying far too hard. My final criticism, which is small but frustrating when it happens, is that sometimes you will think you're in a cutscene only to realise too late that you have regained control of Isaac, and it results in having to reload from a checkpoint. Conclusion: It's a great game overall. You will find yourself getting agitated at certain times, but this usually amounts to the odd room which has been badly designed when it comes to spawning enemies on top of you and inevitably wasting a health pack or two. The variation of environments is excellent and the atmosphere through-out the game draws you in. As I said above, the story is well told and the characters believable. Towards the end i just felt it let itself down slightly with messy enemy spawns and it feeling like an old-skool 'spam health potions whilst blasting things' RPG. Can't get MP to work either. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dead Space 2 has corrected some of the problems the first game had, but has removed somethings which might leave you wanting more. First off, I'll go over what it think they improved about the game. One of the major things that they changed/modified was Isaac himself, I remember before the first game came out, the developers said that Isaac was an engineer but it did not seem like they followed through with it, he picked up weapons and started killing, it did not seem he was much of an engineer as the developers claimed, instead it seemed he was a guy just trying to survive. In Dead space 2 Isaac feels more like engineer, his first few weapons he builds himself, he now opens computer panels and hacks them to open up sealed doors. I found these addition a nice improvement to the characters background as an engineer. Giving Isaac a voice this time around, I am kind of divided on that choice, sometimes it helps the game other times it seems it was better when he did not talk. There is now more creatures and weapon variety which is a very nice improvement over the first. There is now more Zero G sections and with the addition of boosters on Isaacs suit(s) it makes them more enjoyable. At some point though I miss were a monster would be coming at you and you would quickly jump to the adjacent wall to get away from it then turn and shoot it as it came at you in Zero G. In addition, Monster pop up sections are not as obvious as the last game. There are still vents where the monster will break out of but not as many are obvious as the first, so I feel that was a great improvement and keeping you on edge.
Now comes the downsides of the game, first I would have to agree about Nicole aka Isaac's dead girlfriend tormenting him it ,gets old pretty fast. I wish there was more boss variety but the bosses that are there will do but still wish there was more. The biggest let down to me was the end boss, in the first game when it appeared my first thoughts were "You got to be kidding me, how am i supposed to kill that thing, RUN Isaac, That thing will kill you no sweat". In the second dead space you fight the boss and go "thats the boss? that's kind of dumb, there has to be another boss after this?" which there is not which in turn is a pretty big disappointment if you played the first dead space. The baby monsters get really annoy as well. I bought this game for the story/single player so i have not touched the multiplayer yet because from what I have heard its unbalanced and I felt that when they announced they would have MP the game did not feel like it needed it but thats just my opinion. All in all this game is a great game even with its shortcomings. If you enjoyed the first Dead space I would recommend picking up Dead space 2.

I thought the original was allright - not stellar - but I have to admit I am, so far, pleasantly surprised by DS2. The graphics are outstanding, the cutscenes thrilling, and the gameplay is pretty gripe-free. Definitely an improvement, and to my mind, was worth the purchase. I -was- hoping it'd be more sandbox (what, with this city called "The Sprawl"), but can't have everything. Maybe DS3.

Awesome sequel, if I do say so myself. First off, they fixed the mouse acceleration/v-sync problem (which I didn't realize was a problem until Dead Space 2). It is intense just like the first, but the weapons are much more fun. Weapons from the first also have different Alternate fire than the first game. The best part of this game is revisiting the Ishimura. While the game has improved on many features and graphics, I was really disappointed with the boss fights. They were fewer than the first game and the final boss fight was very anti-climactic. I would wait for this to drop in price to $40 before purchasing as I paid $60 and do not feel that it was worth it. It felt more like an expansion than a sequel. Expand

Game almost felt the same as the first one. Scares are the same just a little bit more fast paced compared to the first one. Gameplay improved a slight bit. Muiltiplayer is virtually dead, don't expect to play much MP if that's the reason to buy it. Eye appealing graphics, although nothing compared to upcoming "The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim" or "The Witcher 2: Assasins of Kings".

Dead space 2 is a brilliant, fast paced FPS game... it has excellent graphics, brilliant story structure, character designs were fantastic, but something about it just seems like deja-vu... perhaps the fact that, aside from the storyline, not much was new? however what EA lacks in new-ness, if that actually is a word, they make up for with the fact that you get to slaughter alien zombies! :P

Secondly we have more weapons, like the awesome Javelin Gun. Having more weapons gives more diversity in gameplay and playstyle options. Thirdly the control of the character feels a bit easier than in the first game. It's easier to run, shoot, and generally manoeuvre around. Fourthly, the game feels more engaging. We have more unique situations and different things happening, like when having to quickly get away from a powerful creature, or I can certainly never forget the fantastic train scene fairly early on in the game, or even the smaller things, such as interacting with creatures or having to quickly shut off a breach and stop everything being sucked into space. Fifthly, I found Dead Space 2 somewhat more intense and scarier than the first game. Sure, it's still not exactly deathly scary or anything, but a few moments are definitely bound to make you jump or feel cautious to carry on. I liked the customization of different armor suits as well. They actually all have different bonuses rather than simply being upgrades from the previous one, like in the first game. All in all I generally felt that Dead Space 2 was a step in the right direction for the series. Some parts still do need an improvement, like the puzzles are still nothing special, just as with the first game, but in every other regard DS2 did better. Even the story was somewhat more interesting. Expand

Dead Space 2 did not disappoint. SINGLEPLAYER. DS2 offers an amazing single player following the footsteps of Isaac Clarke and his deteriorating mental state. At no point of the game did I feel I had missed out in any essential plot having not played the first game with an informative short video recapping the events of the first game while creating a bit of atmosphere and preparing you for the horrors of DS2. The game is liner - This is your objective and this is the route you are going to take - usually this would annoy me however with DS2 I did not care. Instead I became engaged with the storyline, marveling at the graphics and taking in the dead space universe the way the game developers intended DP2 to. I believe this is a pro rather than a con, I can only imagine how frustrating the game could have become if you had to search every room, every corridor just to get the most out of the storyline and Electronic Arts and Visceral Games throw in enough surprises, weapons and upgrades to leave you not knowing exactly what is going to be around the corner. The game lasts a good 8-10 hours which is on par with most recent games and first person shooters however will not offer much in the way of re-playability. GRAPHICS. This game looks great. Yes it is third person but this only allows the player to truly admire the amount of detail and design placed on the models and world of DS2. I often found myself taking the game slow, admiring the breath taking world, the realistic movements and just how smooth everything looks. I was surprised when I discovered that the game was running Direct X9, not DirectX10 or 11 as I originally thought. This is no downfall however as the game looks on par, and even surpassing, other recent releases of 2011. GAMEPLAY. If you like Horror mixed together with Sci-Fi. Then DS2 is the game for you. If I was to compare it with any other game gameplay wise I would say its a mix of Fear2 meets Doom mashed together with a Zombie Science Fiction theme. The sounds of the game, as is with any other successful horror movie or game, makes DS2. Expect to take many breaks to calm your nerves as you slowly creep the blood spattered corridors to the sounds of screams and movements in the shadows. Sound and Graphics aside DS2 has a number of small additions and differences that set it aside from your average game. I love the fact that the flashlight is attached to your main weapons zoom function, Not only does this look the part as Issac quickly scans a room with his pulse rifle looking for threats, but it means that there is no separate button that you have to keep pushing in order to see anything. I hope that many other games in the future will follow DS2's footsteps in this regard. Another cool gameplay element is Isaacs ability to significantly slow enemies down with a well placed burst from his suits telekinesis. Useful for escaping or dodging that charging alien, Lining up that perfect killing shot or blowing off limbs. You will never get tired of using Telekinesis in game. The ability to spacewalk in Zero G really show off DS2's movement physics and visuals and is unlike any other game I have played. Another interesting feature which I enjoyed was the lack of a hud. Instead ammo is shown as a heads up display on the actual weapon, Important info and text logs are read as Isaac himself looks at it.
MULTIPLAYER. Reading the reviews on metacritic many people are criticizing DS2's multiplayer for being another L4D but in space. To this I respond: Whats wrong with that? L4D is an amazing game and a game style that I would love to see copied and DEVELOPED by a number of game company's. Unfortunately, while adding a number of new features to the L4D style game-play, such as; different mission objectives (from escaping to setting off a bomb), great graphics, Telekinesis, unlockable power-suits and weapons, killing moves from the 'infected' DS2 fails to capture the wow factor that L4D has, instead capturing a sort of... get to the objective, hold off as long as possible style. A slight disappointment considering how DS2 could have improved and developed the team co-op 'work together or die' L4D style but instead is considered by the majority a flop. Most players except the hardcore and dedicated will breeze over DS2's multiplayer, give up, and move onto the next major game. All in all, A great game. Intense graphics, a decent storyline, amazing sharp sounds and enough scares and fighting to keep even the most experienced gamer on their toes. I slight shame on the Multiplayer but good on EA and Visceral games for trying, however the single player more than makes up for the shortcomings of the multiplayer. A roller coaster of a ride and a must have buy for all Sci-Fi / Horror fans and a game that I feel justified in spending $50 to own.

If there is anything negative to be said about this game is that it's a little short - I think I finished it in six or seven hours on normal difficulty, and that if you've played the first game, then scares are a little familiar - if you've seen one Necromorph playing dead only to jump up at you when you walk nearby then you've seen them all, though having said that; it still made me jump a bunch of times - the screaming children are f***ing terrifying. (There are still some problems with camera angles when boxed into a corner but these are an irritation rather than a deal breaker.) DS2 also handles zero gravity in a far more intuitive, and enjoyable way, with none of the crazy hopping from one surface to another as in the first game. Now you can move freely, as you would expect. Also improved in DS2 is Isaac’s level of interaction. Now he speaks! This actually improves the experience more than might be expected, as it gives a greater sense that you’re involved in an unfolding story. The graphics are above average quality though not outstanding. The gameplay is improved by the introduction of more varied environments (although this is still very much a corridor shooter), and there are still plenty of tense moments when battling with enemies, some of which will be familiar if you played DS1, and some of which are new. When compared with the original DS2 is basically more of the same but with a number of welcome improvements and enhcncements. On a final note: I found it a little easier than the first, but that might be because of the improved controls and my familiarity with the gameplay second time around. Anyhoo, there’s still plenty of nerve-jangling fun to be had. Recommended, especially if you liked the original.

It helps lots if you have played DS1 first. Partly because the story is hard to follow otherwise, even though there is a re-cap video involved in the main menu. More importantly you need the experience of the first game to know what to do in situations. DS2 was my first foray into the series and the telekinesis opening panels was unfamiliar. Whereas if I had played DS1 first, it would be second nature. I was constantly referring to youtube coz I was getting stuck every, and I mean everywhere.

Basically if it's your first DS game, it's tough. The puzzles, are tricky, again, youtube all the time.

Purely on it's own merit I rate DS2 about 87%. it is as astonishing game, piece of work, whatever you want to call it. The survival horror element is pinned down perfectly, and exactly what I was looking for. It trumped DS1 easily as twice as good. DS1 was old and clunky, and felt like trying to work in a vat of treacle, compared to this.

My first play through, I think I didn't save a node for stores unlocking. I found myself facing six foes with only seven shots. It was diabolically hard, without the experience of the first game.

Plus I had an awful bug that made it crash in chapter thirteen, and the game ended there for me. I had to get help from EA to get that sorted. As it happened Ch. 13 is the my favourite level of the game.

Overall brilliant looking given the modest rig it will run on. Epic concept.

badass engineer! Dead Space 2 tells Isaac's story in a new way, he is no
longer a silent protagonist. Here we go.

    STORYLINE

Three years after Isaac Clarke escaped the USG Ishumira fighting hoards
of monsters named Necromorphs, he found himself at the Sprawl, a space
station on the one of planet Jupiter's moon. He soon finds that another
Necromorph outbreak has spread across the space station, and it's not too
late for him to stop it. The Marker, the artifact which is turning dead
bodies in Necromorphs needs to be destroyed in order to stop the outbreak.
Isaac thought he saw the end of the artifact when he destroyed it back
in the original Dead Space but things gets too crazy, his dead and annoying
girlfriend is haunting him in his mind making him hallucinate frequently
throughout the entire game. Isaac is like "It's time to find a new
girlfriend!". As Isaac tries to escape the Sprawl, he also finds a few
survivors, Isaac soon makes up his mind to end The Marker's treat instead
of escaping, he helps the survivor escapes right after making 1 of them
his girlfriend and jumps right in front of the Necromorphs like a badass
as he slays his way to the artifact!

    WORLD

Uh.... the USG Ishimura, if you have played the original Dead Space game,
you are gonna miss it. Dead Space 2 takes place on Titan! Jupiter's largest
moon, so it is a "space zombie outbreak in space". Sprawl is a cool space
station, people live here which means Sprawl has hospitals, churches or the
elementary, Dead Space 2 used all these ideas. Dead Space 2 is pretty linear
but unlike the first one, there is no backtracking. You are going from
1 side of the narrow, single path map to the other. Unlike the first game,
this game has many NPCs, I found them very interesting because most of them
I met throughout the game KILLED THEMSELVES in a minute after I met them, I know
this is crazy but they really killed themselves because the Marker brainwashed
    them.

The Church is one of the best level you will find in an horror game, this
level is extremely decorated, gory and full of Necromorphs. The ambient screams
will cause you to perform a perfect jumpscare. You will also be able to revisit
the Ishimura for one last time, and it under reconstruction, as you walk in it,
it makes you remember of the first mins of the original Dead Space, the tram is
offline so you have to fly between decks, the Ishimura level is very dark since
it is under reconstruction and there is no power due to the outbreak, it also
brings back the original's Dead Space's enemy approach.

The game also has a few open areas like cargo holds, 3 of the 4 cargo holds I
found in the game were full of a bird-human hybrid Necromorphs that uses clever
tactics to finish you for good.
GAMEPLAY Go there and get this! Dead Space 2's Isaac is a badass when it comes to ripping space zombies off. This iconic Plasma Cutter can be purchased from the store if you have played the original and have a save game of it on your hard drive. The combat in this game is EXCELLENT, unlike the first one, the combat is more fluid and agile. Dismembering the limbs of nasty space zombies work better than ever. After all the great improvements in the combat, I didn't like the way the Necromorphs appoach you, I mean the improved combat is a step away from horror, at the beginning of each fight, you might get scared but when you have sighted you first target, it's like hoard mode, they swarm on you making the game more survival shooter than horror. Dead Space 2 doesn't feature many puzzles unlike the first one, but the puzzles in this one are better than the first game. The new hacking minigame can be fun but once you are interrupted by one of those space zombies, you will lose your hacking progress, things are more complicated and tough on higher difficulties so I recommend clearing all Necromorphs in the room before you focus on the puzzles. SETTINGS The game runs very smooth, the 2 or 3 cutscenes the game has are also well done, the dark visuals makes the game more atmospheric. The game constantly tries to scare you with noises in dark rooms instead of throwing Necromorphs at you. The animations in this game, just like combat has improved a lot, from the gun animations to the unique player death scenes, you remember those right? If you are living under a rock then let me tell what a unique player death is... when you don't concentrate on an Necromorph and if it manages sneaks behind you or near you, it will trigger a unique scene where the Necromorph will try to slice, eat or vaporize Isaac to death, the only way to survive this scene is to spam the "E" button on PC or the "X" button on consoles, otherwise the Necromorph will trigger a cutscene where it kills Isaac, each Necromorph has their own kill cutscene. These cutscenes are so cool that sometimes, you might just wanna be stupid and let the Necromorph kill you so you can just see the cutscene. The game also has no loading screens, once you load the game and you play and complete a chapter, the next chapter doesn't require loading, the game automatically loads it when you are in vents or elevators, it loads to so smooth as you play the game you will never feel that the game is actually loading. The game also features a New Game+ mode which makes the game more replayable on a higher difficulty, you get to keep your weapons, suits and upgrades and the mode also unlocks more of them which pulls you back into the game instantly after your first playthrough. =============================================================================== VERDICT Dead Space 2 is a huge improvement over the first one but the core of the game is still the same, go there, kill stuff, collect loot, solve the puzzle and watch the cool cutscene. This game has it's moments but I didn't like it because the improved combat removed most of the survival horror elements from the game but still I enjoyed it. Dead Space 2 is a MUST BUY game, it took me 10 hours on my first playthrough and I am really looking forward to the series. PROS- + BRUTAL COMBAT + DISMEMBERING + SOME INTENSE MOMENTS + USG ISHUMIRA REVISIT + CHURCH LEVEL + ATMOSPHERIC LEVEL DESIGN + UNIQUE PLAYER DEATHS + NECROMORPH VARIATION + AMBIENT SOUND DESIGN + FUN MULTIPLAYER + CAMPAIGN NEVER FLAWS + ICONIC ENEMY- UBERMORPH + NO LOAD SCREENS CONS- - DULL GO THERE MISSIONS - SAME MECHANICS - FORCES YOU TO SCARE OVERALL SCORE - 8.7 "IMPRESSIVE" ===============================================================================

Holy crap this game is scary. This third person horror shooter does almost everything right. The story is cool, the third person style gives a very unique experience (most horror games are first person), the gunplay was good, and the eerie atmosphere is well done too.

Dead Space really nailed down that sense of being, trapped, isolated and hunted on the edge of distant space beyond all hope and reason.

Dead Space 2 thinks bigger is better aka the local is a giant space station and spamming mini hordes is the way to go for bigger and better game play. More of the same fun right, but wait for it BIGGER AND BETTER ( no not really ).

    VOTO: 7.5/10

I am a big fan of horror games and it was in 2020 that I decided to finally work on the Dead Space trilogy, I had played both Dead Space 1 and 2 prior but never made it very far, probably around Chapter 4-6 for each of them but I struggled with these types of games back then, however now I am not only much better but I love these types of games now. I completed Dead Space 1 in 2020 and aimed to complete Dead Space 2 in 2021 which I have done. Also just a side mention, I played on PC but I used my Xbox controller, did not experiment with the keyboard and mouse so not sure how that is for some people.

Story - We left the first game with quite the cliffhanger, was a really awesome ending that made you wonder what happened, we got the answers to that here. The story is all good, just a little standard, you take control of Isaac Clarke once again who has been kept in a facility for several years, having his mind experimented on before the station it is overrun by Necromorphs once again. The whole plot isn't anything all that amazing, aside from some new information, it mostly feels like Dead Space 1 again. Regardless of that, I still enjoyed it and the ending was a nice little nod to the ending of the first game.

Gameplay - Not much to say here, felt like the first game also, I found myself mostly sticking with 3-4 weapons and not experimenting much, early on I was going through my supplies rather quick and didn't feel like risking credits on a new weapon when I didn't know if I would take to it or not. My suggestion would have been to just have guns accessible to you as you play through the game, not locked behind in-game money that you needed to spend. The enemies this time around were familiar yet had some fresh stuff too, I did struggle a little more with this one than in the first game, not sure why but it felt like they throw multiple enemies at you from time to time and it was a little hard to deal with when Isaac doesn't have any means of dodging or blocking attacks, once a few enemies gang up on you, you are done. If you enjoyed the gameplay for Dead Space 1, you will be right at home here, I loved it despite the difficulty being a little harder.

Scares - I am pretty tough when it comes to horror games, I loved the atmosphere of the first Dead Space, definitely got some good jump scares outta me, much like this one, though I definitely found myself to be less creeped out this time around, I was able to go from room to room without freaking out or looking at every corner. I don't know if that was just me, or if others felt the same, still has some truly spooky moments though. One of the creepiest moments for me was a scripted section where you can peek through a window and you see a woman call an infected baby to her, they cuddle for a moment and the baby just explodes, it was a intense and awesome! Love that stuff.

Graphics - The game look fantastic on my PC. Cannot believe it is over a decade old! Still looks incredible. You can definitely see the age in faces and such, but the environment is great and doesn't feel nowhere near dated to play. The overall look of the game I am a big fan of, even if it does feel very similar to the first game.

Music - Not much I can say in terms of score, but the ambient noises felt a little lacking here, which is something that was super common in Dead Space 1, it really built some tension, it wasn't like it was gone completely in this one but just felt like it had been dialed back a bit. Whoever is responsible for either game in terms of the sounds though, they are amazing, some of the creepiest sounds you will ever hear in a video game, mad props to those people.

Final Rating - I am so happy to mark Dead Space 2 off my list of games, and I will most definitely be jumping into Dead Space 3 in 2022 to wrap up the trilogy completely. If you enjoyed Dead Space 1, definitely play this one, it is very much similar but still a lot of fun!

anyway, apart from my frustration, this is a good game. the graphics are not top-notch for pc standards, but the atmosphere is great. the sound effects are great too, however some sounds are waaay too loud and can really piss you off if you're using headphones like i do. one of the things that make this game so hard for me, is the control. i mean, the first game had god awful control and it was nearly unplayable with keyboard and mouse, but the main problem is that sometimes you have no way to defend yourself, like if you're surrounded by enemies, you're **** they'll kill you almost instantly and it makes you wonder what's the point of the life bar on your back. another thing that i really hate is that when you're hacking something you have no way to defend yourself, and there's nothing you can do except for trying again and again, and eventually after a lot of tries, you might be lucky enough to make it. in general, the levels of this game are 90% trial and error: it's just "oh, there's an enemy, shoot him!, oh damn there's another one, oh **** there are enemies behind me, FUUUUUU, i'm dead... AGAIN!" also, i should mention that i keep getting killed in what i think are cutscenes: what a ****load of **** bull****! why do so many things in this game look like cutscenes? why isn't there some sort of indication that what's going on is or not a cutscene? goddamn it this kind of things just piss me off so much it makes me wanna throw the game out the damn window! this kind of bull**** would have been nice in the 80s when game developers had to make hard games to make them last, but why in the name of god do you have to do thing like this in 2011??? jesus christ! i can finish contra on the nes without dieing too many times, but i keep dieing over and over again in this damn game! that's definitely not what i expected.

in conclusion: not a bad game, but holy **** is it hard! 7/10

Now, what made me love DS1 was exactly that, as a seasoned horror fan, it's very hard to find something to gave me real shivers, be it in movies or games. And DS1 delivered, as no movie or game in recent memory could do - maybe with the exception of Silent Hill 2.

Yes, there were recycled levels, and yes, they ripped off lots of stuff from other games. But, as Picasso reportedly said, the mediocre artist copies, the great artist steals. Critics called DS1 "unoriginal", but that's missing the point completely. It was worthy not because the script, storytelling or game mechanics (despite dismemberment being original). It was worthy for achieving a overwhelmingly macabre feel that no one on cinema, lest gaming industry, today manage to achieve. Dead Space 2 is just not scary. I played it on the level above normal, got killed a lot of times. Still, I couldn't feel that impressing sensation of imminent danger that made DS1 into the game I loved. Some critics talked about the jump from Alien to Aliens, Ridley Scott to David Big Cheese Cameron. So, it's like having your favorite cult movie being re-shot in a generic commercial way by a Hollywood studio - or, more specifically, a Hollywood studio accidentally releasing a masterpiece and "correcting" it later.

Now, DS2 has its merits as a game. Combat is still very satisfying, the script is a lot less generic, with Isaac turning into a person with his own will, not a generic vessel of suffering. It deserves the 7 I'm giving for those merits, and for that I'm excluding my comparison with DS1. Fortunately, it's not easier than DS1, maybe harder. On the down side, it's too linear - I really don't see the point of critics in hailing that as an advantage. Worse still, one of the new monsters, the stalker, caught my attention as a symptom of dumbification - it's supposed to hide at corners to suprise-attack you, but it actually sticks its head from the corners so you can peek it every time before it predictably charging head-on for you to cut his legs. The stalker actually playing peek-a-boo with you - I suppose that's adequate for the public they had in mind.

Maybe it's not the developers' fault or executive meddling, maybe they set the bar too high, or it's just impossible for one to get the same scare twice - see Silent Hill after 2. Still, I'd wait for the price go down a little before acquiring it, not expecting it to be Dead Space, but just a competent monster shooter, a little soulless, but funny still.

The rest of the game felt like a familiar ritual. At first I was fully expecting new twists and innovations, but that expectancy quickly gave way to an ever deepening sense of disappointment. Way too linear, some recycled environments, stupid puzzles, very few visual improvements, and worst of all for a survival horror; it was dreadfully predictable. I still enjoyed the game though, and will most likely purchase the next effort in the franchise, but I'll never again pre-purchase a Dead Space game, or purchase it at their full asking price... I'll simply wait for the Steam sales.

THE GOOD: Expanded enemy variety from the first game, appropriately creepy and atmospheric, wide range of fun ways to kill enemies, more engaging plot than first game. Bugs i've encountered so far are: 1)aiming gets locked sometimes and not letting player to zoom out, 2)corpses or body parts get stuck in between walls and making constant weird noises, 3)there's some kind of graphical glitch with the characters' eyeballs and eyelids which makes them look very weird, as if their eyeballs are coming out. When you make a mute character speak in a sequel it will fail.
That out of the way, I liked Dead Space 2, it's ok. Of the "BOO! Scared you?" games out there it does deliver a bit of tension and a decent story. Onto the game, I keep loving the claustrophobic experience the camera creates, it is a high point in this franchise. The weapons are quite great, but again a pain to upgrade so

I'd hope it was a bit more memorable, but it'll do.

In this case for instance, it can remind you of how much more compelling a relatively sleeper hit like the first Dead Space actually was. It featured a unique, though not particularly original, eerie spaceship to explore, an excellent lighting engine and some pretty good monster designs, as well as a whole host of "mining" tools you could use to defend yourself from the ghastly things on board the Ishimura. A lot of it seemed practical, barring the "kinesis" and "stasis" modules. A lot of the weaponry seemed practical for a ship in space harvesting whole planets for rare metals and materials. However, the chief focus of the original was what exactly? It wasn't really scary, it wasn't really well written, featuring some pretty poor dialogue from all parties involved throughout the story line it would seem and aside from borrowed mechanics from other similar games, Dead Space didn't have a whole lot it could call its own. It did have three things though, a story that didn't usually get in the way of very solid, satisfying gameplay, and a very good atmosphere accompanied by probably some of the best sound design in a science fiction horror game. I really enjoyed the first game for primarily these reasons, but this is where the sequel slips up. First off, the story is repugnant, its not interesting, its not fleshed out, I have no reason to care about Isaac anymore now than I did before, the characters are dull, the level design is much worse than the first games, and the sound design just doesn't have the charm of its predecessor. Their is so much wrong with playing through the first twenty minutes of the game that I suddenly remembered why I nearly quit playing on multiple occasions. First off, our protagonist talks now, no explanation for it really. He just talks now and unfortunately, he's had some pretty bad and utterly bizarre dialogue written for him as well. Secondly, Ashley is now a psychotic ghost that can physically manifest itself to give Isaac empty threats, reminders of the "past" events, and to generally annoy him by causing infuriating quick time events and pausing the entire pacing of the game just to tell the player something to remind Isaac how bad he should feel for some reason. I have a hard time understanding why, who, and for what reason this was placed into the game. Seems to me theirs already plenty of conflict with rampaging aliens murdering everything in site, why on earth did the main character need to have this internal conflict with his very dead girlfriend? Oh wait, that's right, because "the marker." The marker is boring guys, it was left vague and unexplained in the first game for a reason. All of sudden all these games are about some totally ambiguous and uninteresting alien artifact that humans have reversed engineered somehow. Who even cares? I can't think of one reason why this had to be in the plot. Could've just been your standard fair, "Everything is screwed up and we have to get out of here," plots, but I guess they've done that one already. Thirdly, love interest. I get it, Isaac has to have some woman involved with him on every nightmarish space engineering adventure he goes on. However, this ones pretty unnecessary and silly. The first game accomplished a sense of isolation that permeated throughout your play through. Sure Hammond and the "traitorous wench" were on board the Ishimura too, but you were always in different parts of the ship. No one in Dead Space 1 meets face to face aside from two or three occasions. This kinda added to the atmosphere. Everyone else was gone, it was literally just the three of you alive on the ship. In Dead Space 2, they attempt to do this with the involvement of someone who is obviously very crazy and a female interest named Ellie. Theirs a fourth character involved, but is essentially only there to cause conflict for Isaac and his group. The real problem is, every time I've played through this game, I can't even really remember a single portion I enjoyed, it all just sort of blends together with really the only highlight being a brief section when you're back on board the Ishimura. The cut scenes are numerous and kill the flow of the game, the Ashley subplot should've been axed by someone in the writing department before they threw it haphazardly into the game and Isaac should never have been given a voice. What little plot their even is, it doesn't feel like you're motivated by much of anything. So much so that after the first hour it starts to feel like a slog from "A-corridor to B corridor." Their was a lot of potential here to make a longer, more atmospheric and more interesting game, but they took too many elements they "thought" people liked from the first one and focused on them and them only. Dead Space 2 remains a solid, but ultimately very disappointing sequel at the end of the day. Expand

Before I start bashing this game, let me get the good points out the way first. Dead Space 2's engine is incredibly well-deigned and the environments have a good amount of attention-to-detail: lights flicker through gaps in the wall and the dark environments do a good job of building atmosphere (when the game lets it). The story is generally good and kept me engaged. The combat is satisfying, if a little pretentious and the HUD is very effective at drawing you in and keeping you immersed. Now, the bashing. Despite its pretensions; DS2 is not a proper horror game. I've always said that the best horror games will make players doubt what they can see, and fear what they cannot see. Dead Space 2 has meets neither of those requirements; there is a sub-plot involving hallucinations, but it has little effect on the gameplay and is only really there for cheap scares. The monsters you fight in the game lack any form of subtlety and will display themselves in full illumination; the opening scene especially being a perfect example of this game's lack of subtlety. Another niggling issue is the save points: you save your progress at different "save stations" dotted throughout the levels; not only are they out-of-place but they also ruin the immersion that the game tries so hard to achieve. This game is extremely long (10 hours) in proportion to how many ideas it has and would have benefited with having 5 of those chopped off of to make it less flabby. On top of that, the game isn't even that scary and will often throw buckets of gore and blood in your face in an attempt to scare you. So the biggest problem with DS2 is that it just can't decide what it's trying to be; switching between splattery gory action and morbid sentimentalism and creating jarring tonal shifts. Dead Space 2 is not a bad game: I don't deny that it is still quite fun to play, but it completely misses the point of what horror is about and while non-horror fans will probably be on the edge of their seat, those used to proper atmosphere are in for a bit of a flop. On a side note, I'm glad Visceral fixed that awful mouse movement from DS1. If you want a proper horror game, download "Slender"; if that doesn't scare you, nothing will. Expand

With this sequel, Visceral Games has masterfully expanded on the first Dead Space. They've revved up the series with tougher guns, a bigger setting, and online multiplayer, but kept the spirit and, most importantly, the scares of the original in tact.
