After 4 years of early access the game is out and I tried it during the free weekend extensively. The game still feels like it's in early stages of early access. It can't be a beta since it seems to lack so much content.

The map is huge but absolutely empty. There are some nice places, where the exterior looks nice and provides a little city or rural atmosphere. But the inside they look all absolutely the same. Just after 30 min I was already bored from the visuals, just running from building to building because the next one has a bigger coat placed in it. Most disappointing are the hospitals and industrial building. They are just completely empty, seriously. Just the loot changes but nothing more.
Then there is the huge issue that this game offers no goals to aim for for the player. One just gets spawned into the world. Surviving is an absolute joke since food is in abundance available. It has survival elements but it is never a threat. The threat are other player which you encounter every 5 hours or so on a high populated server. These encounters are fun, with tensions and can end brutal. But there is not winning or loosing in general. Only two "endgame" goals, building a base and repairing car. Both are extremely time consuming and frustrating. I mean 15 hours at least and if not done without breaks, the chances are very high someone steals you stuff. But even if one gets this done, there is no payoff in any way. A working car is useless, when there are no places to go.
Third aspect is the very basic fighting system and half assed inventory management. The zombies offer no threat whatsoever. I thought first, that one has to time dodging and attacking to bring them down with melee but then quickly realized that just standing and spamming is the only way to go. No matter how crappy or good the weapon is, it's always the same. There is no aiming down sights for some weapons (I probably haven't found all), which would be very beneficial for human encounters. There is no tutorial for the inventory and it's not self explanatory, only a 10 min youtube video showed me what to do.
The last aspect is the lag in moments that counts. Just roaming around works fine but in zombie battles it stutters massively. If one has to fight two zombies, there is a high chance two or three hits will be taken just because of the stutters. But it is just a minor thing, since the zombies are walking tuna (food to eat) bags anyway. It just makes bashing zombies less fun.
All in all it is a somehow unique but widely boring experience. I give it an average 5 for the nice idea but with a huge lack of content to back it up. The map could have been easily half the size but with more things to do.
I would only recommend this game to people who are in for the rare but exhilarating human encounters, probably nice with a friend or two (but it takes a whole gaming session just to find each other).… Expand
