Obviously there's some amount of effort in Dauntless, but I simply did not feel like the game had much feedback at all. Weapons felt like they went straight through monsters, as if my character was trying to slap a beast with a fist full of air. There's really no impact. When your creature hunting game fails to make the hunting part responsive, everything falls to bits.

I really like the art of the game, but the game play gets repetitive very very quickly. The game loop consists of getting a quest in the central hub, go to a selected planet (which is basically just some empty land with spawn points), find the monster you need, smash attacks until said monster is dead, go back to the hub and craft better weapons/armors.

It wouldn't be a problem, IF the bosses felt like something more than health sponges, IF it rewarded skilled play instead of button smashing, IF the worlds were more entertaining to visit, IF the NPCs giving out quests felt less like floating text boxes.

Eather Striker are first weapons in this game they where op when they got released 4years ago and to this day are still the ONLY viable option if you want to get good at time trials.

If you don't want to pay money get ready to grind for days and hope you get lucky with the cells you get otherwise you gotta farm some monsters and hope to get some cells do drop witch happens like 1/10 times.

To make it easy, the Devs don't listen to the playerbase and continue the drive away content creators if they tell them that the changes they made are bad.

If you want a idiot safe version of Monster Hunter than go for it but don't expect the game to stay the game it is now. In the 5 Years i play they changed the basics like 5x and made endgame players like i was start semi new every time just to get livetime out of the game.

I have 80days9h played and the changes to the Cells was the last straw for me and i uninstalled the game.
I told you above Cells are a big grind and i had all of them legit all, they removed some with the latest patch and made them into new combined cells but the cells you farmed are just GONE you don't get them to craft or anything if you want the new ones go grind again.

Could give rank one in regards of worst game controls to ever be implemented. They somehow finally made bind modifications but the combos are the worst stuff I've had to experience. Everyone tries to imply 'it's dark souls type of commit to attacks type non-cancellable animations' but then maybe try to have at least half as good of controls as dark souls ?

They keep spitting out most repulsive cosmetics updates ignoring actual game-breaking bugs that existed since its most scuffed alpha release (Getting stuck inside trees for example). They legit had the audacity to remove private sessions for hunts so you're now forced to play with players that either are floormats or nearly one-shot the bosses, hence creating the floormat players at endgame that never had to dodge anything before. Cycle of cringe.

Played the game for over 100 hours (got full builds for most classes which half come from beta ez gets) and came to a conclusion that I can only hate play it at this stage. Very repetitive, nerve wrecking game that is very VERY hard to enjoy after first 4-5 hours of game-play. Gonna give 1 point just because it managed to bait me into playing it for so long due to hopes of it becoming something sem-decent. Good job Pheonix Labs, based on progress so far, fair to assume pay2win loot crates soon?

The game elements mesh together artistically, but that is easy to accomplish with mediocre graphics. Slayers do not feel like they are designed to fight behemoths, instead their animations are suited to fighting immovable cubes. Dauntless is designed to be a comfortably difficult game, yet many players find it too difficult because progression is far too fast, which is bad given its incredibly simple game play loop when compared to the Monster Hunter series. When players do reach the end, after maybe 20 hours, there is no meaningful end game content. Behemoths are far too easy to manipulate, and fights become unsatisfying and short outside of speed runs, which at the competitive level are dependent on random critical hits.

Phoenix Labs is active on social media, but their employees are not really listening. They only want to post jokes and bask in the flattery offered by naive newcomers. They ignore plenty of feedback from veterans, probably because they are too invested in their terrible design decisions. Phoenix Labs is designing Dauntless to suit their wallets and their vision, not the community's vision, and I can respect that, but the result is unsatisfactory.

The problems with Dauntless are low-level such that it is not feasible for Phoenix Labs to rebuild the game - it would consume too many man-hours while not providing revenue. It is too late for this game to be anything more than disappointing after a few hours.

If Dauntless were an offline, single-player experience, I would perhaps give it a 3. But as a flawed game that is only becoming worse with each update, it deserves a 0.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you are expecting Monster Hunter World levels of quality run away right now because this game is anything but good.

Monsters get their parts back when they enrage so even if you cut them off they can still use them.

Hit detection is sever side and it's laggy as hell so have fun getting hit by attacks that didn't render yet.

Grindy as hell since you need cores (that the monster doesn't drop) and parts that have a stupidly low drop chance. Have fun killing 50 monsters to upgrade your 4 pieces of armor.

Pay to win **** mechanics like timed lockouts on upgrades.

escalation hunts that basically force you to unlock the same talent tree five times where all five talent trees are the god damn same.

Lagging in solo lobbies because of their **** server system.

This game does absolutely nothing well. Monster Hunter world is the better game in EVERY SINGLE WAY.

Dauntless is a game along the lines of Fortnite. Taking the concept of a popular game, adding your twist to it and release it for free with minimal HUD and UI and of course, a **** battle pass. in your first hunt you fight a BEHEMOTH (not a monster don't be silly now) that was so unmemorable that i can't remember how it looked or what it did. Then you go to the hub world where you do some really awful minimalist MMO-like mission to craft gear and hunt a new monster. In Fortnite the twist was you could build and the game was third person. It was refreshing. A new take on an oversaturated genre. Now what does Dauntless do differently than Monster Hunter World? Uhhh I guess they added a healthbar for BEHEMOTHS (still not monsters) which was specifically not in Monster Hunter because it would take away the immersion.

Monster Hunter World has beautiful well thought out areas of a memorable island.
Dauntless has an uninteresting world that has trees and snow sometimes.

Monster Hunter World has tens of unique memorable monsters with distinct movesets and personalities.
Dauntless has BEHEMOTHS who are unmemorable and generic so much so that I can't remember the appearance or movesets of a single one.

Monster Hunter World has tons of different ways to fight and deal with a monster.
Dauntless has one way. Punch punch punch!

Monster Hunter World has unique skill trees for all weapons and monsters.
Dauntless has one weapon of each class for one monster.

Monster Hunter World has interesting weapons and fluid combat.
Dauntless is way closer to hack n' slash.

3/10 A truly horrible game, but being free is definitely a pro and the hack n' slash combat was somewhat responsive.

Developers seems to have abandoned the game on a unfinished state filled with bugs, you can't even jump without getting stuck middle air.
There is no way to see your latency to tell if its your lack of skills that doesn't dodge on time, your laggy computer or the potato servers. Its infurriating how bad the fluidity of the game is when trying to time a dodge, hitting an enemy and even using items.
Hell using items has a loooooooong animation that if canceled it didn't made effect, you can't even heal with items while fighting because it will cancel whatever animation is happening in the moment. Drinking a healing item? Takes roughly 3 seconds and in the meantime the monster rushes towards you and end with even less health. What's the point of healing anyways?
I could keep writing more from my experience but its getting late and im tired, in conclusion: avoid this game and spend your time in something much more fun. At least don't spend money on an unfinished game.

The skill curve goes from easy to hard and no inbetween, with the light/dark elemental Behemoths posing some sort of challenge, this comes with the set back of not being guided to farm a full gear set to the max, often partys kick players after telling them to gear up more, not the greatest experience, and this could be handled in a way where the developers warn you before taking on these beasties with a simple "Are you sure you want to accept this quest, the monster is way above your pay grade, level up Slayer".

    Monetization
I found getting the cells i needed (Gems that have power enhancements) to be a hassle, with people i play with getting all they need because they payed extra for the 20+ hour wait time, mobile game styled, time gated salesman to give them more of a chance to receive the cell they wanted, i do hope they find a better way to distribute these cores because its really not fun not being able to maximize your gear set for your preferred play style especially since they have a fortnite style battlepass.

right now the game isnt in a state where you can play non stop, it gets to a point where you'll need to wait, so if you're thinking this is the next god eater or monster hunter where content is vast and then its over, its far from it and it needs to figure out if it wants to be the next monster hunter as a live service or if its going to have an identity of its own because its pretty weak.

Unfortunately, all this doesn't mean anything if the people you're playing with aren't fun to, y'know, actually play with.

The community and the players there-in are absolute dog crap as of this review. 3/5ths of the way through the content, your options are: Wait several minutes for a private lobby(to kill a boss that takes 2-7 minutes), have friends willing to play with you, or grind it out with a variety of console players that are almost as interested in screwing the team as they are downing the boss. Not to say PC players can't be dick bags as well, but holy crap the number of uncooperative/lazy/malicious players you'll find from the cross-platform feature is almost awe-inspiring.

Either find 3 other friends to play this game with or just don't even install it. You're not missing out as a new player. You have 3 options in this game: Suffer through hours of grind with absolute tools for teammates, Play the beta and be way into end-game where the server-searching dumpster-fire doesn't impact you as much, or get a squad you can queue with.

Which is sad, because this game would probably rank closer to a 7 or 8 in my book if their playerbase wasn't so insufferable to game with.

TL;DR: A lot of words to say the game is great, but it's hampered by their players and lazy/under-staffed moderators. Much like 90% of F2P coop games. If you give it a try, don't jump the gun on paying for anything. I'd recommend giving it a good 12 hours of play(pubbing, solo, or team) before providing any sort of support for a game that's severely lacking in terms of the player-related QA department.

I would hold A and then it just wouldn't do anything and it would take me several attempts for it to work. Also there was not any variation in behemoth attacks they would always do the same moves and after a while you could learn what they were going to do and the game got easier and easier to complete solo. I believe this is supposed to be a team game however if you are an advanced player then you can play every hunt solo as the behemoths get predictable and repetitive.
