Dauntless provides a streamlined, user-friendly alternative to Monster Hunter. Though repetitive at times, there’s no denying the game's solid and enjoyable core mechanics. The dull environments could use some work, however.

There is a lot of fun in slashing the Behemoths, especially with others; the crafting is very well designed; and the game induces the familiar feeling of ‘just one more session’. [12/2019, p.81]

I wanted very badly to love Dauntless, and for a time I think I did thanks to the fantastic combat and weapon variety. But the lack of any real storytelling makes the repetitive questing structure a glaring issue in desperate need of some TLC. If you’re looking for a new go-to F2P experience, you could do much worse — just don’t expect a world drenched teeming with lore and compelling characters.

A game with unapologetically singular focus, its distillation of deeper MMOs' elements nevertheless results in an experience that all too often feels barren.

Overall, Dauntless is a ton of fun and a great game to play alone or with friends. It occupies realm of easy to pick-up hard to master perfectly and offers a ridiculous amount of gameplay for free. There are seven different weapons which you can freely switch between, and all of them offer a unique playstyle and abilities to master. Dauntless is the perfect game to run around with your friends in or to play by yourself focusing on your goals.

All in all, Dauntless is a good free-to-play experience that has the potential to become great. Its playful art style, streamlined combat, and rich progression system can provide hours of entertainment, and the fact that it features cross-platform multiplayer is a major triumph all by itself.

Although it's not as great as Monster Hunter: World, but Dauntless is good enough as a free-to-play online game. It might be your best choice before Monster Hunter: World's Iceborne Expansion released.

Dauntless offers a lot of content, especially for a game that is free. The combat starts off a bit slow, but give it some time and you will thoroughly enjoy yourself with Dauntless.

Dauntless is a game with certain shortcomings, but the truth is that it is addictive... and FreeToPlay.

Anyone who can not make friends with a rather broad-based, but then always repetitive content and attaches importance to a story or multi-layered characters, is wrong with Dauntless.

Dauntless is Monster Hunter for those that don't have the time or money to devote to Capcom's Monster Hunter: World. Dauntless falters in certain areas, but provides the feel of hunting and gear progression in a more streamlined manner. the world can feel a bit lifeless and gamey at time, but this is definitely good enough to carve out it's own space alongside Capcom's flagship series. And being free-to-play with full cross-platform play helps a great deal.

What Dauntless lacks in layered complexity it makes up for with tightly crafted combat and rewarding progression, proving you don’t need to cram every possible feature into a game for it to be great.

Dauntless is clearly an experience that has been optimized to deliver the most stress-free multiplayer session possible. From the seamless crossplay to the way that anyone can hop into a game and confidently take up arms against formidable foes, it’s refreshingly accessible and looks great to boot. While it can feel a little empty, and there are bugs that mar the experience here and there, its fresh look and lively spark are more than enticing enough to warrant a spin.

Dauntless has plenty of room for growth, but it’s already one of my favorite free-to-play games. I initially overlooked Dauntless as another Monster Hunter clone and I was wildly wrong for thinking that. Whether you’re a newcomer to the genre or just looking for an alternative while you wait for Iceborne, you can’t go wrong with Dauntless. As the West’s first foray into the monster hunting genre, Phoenix Labs’ Dauntless is an absolute triumph.

Dauntless is a great foundation for a rollicking monster-mashing time, but without the critical component of a compelling endgame, your journey has no satisfying destination. Only time will tell if the swirling islands around Ramsgate can provide something more.

While Dauntless still has a lot to prove in terms of longevity, grabbing a few friends and going on a hunt is easy as hell given the free-to-play system and open platform concessions.

Stunlocked, cant use items because of behemoth abilities, them "building" turrets 1-2 shotting you from whereever that takes a full 10-20 seconds of attacks to destroy 1 of them. Sad way to ruin a game that could have been interesting.
On top of that, the worlds you run around in feel empty and boring, you can pick herbs but not a single thing else - theres no way to get off an island without killing the behemoth, or alt-f4ing the game. Which again just seems stupid.
Theres so many stupid faults here and there, but it seems like they have spent alot of time on the ingame store - so at least you can go broke quick while looking your best in bought equipment while the game is boring, broken, laggy and unbalanced.

Currently fanboys are camping Metacritic and downvoting bad reviews. This is a concentrated effort from /r/dauntless/ members.

    Pros:
    - Free
    - New content is being added and is being kept somewhat relevant
    - Transmog are nice if you care about looks. Which some do in a 3rd person game.
    - Okay weapon variety combat styles
    - Incoming cross-platform play is pretty dope

    Cons:
    - Feels like the poor man's Monster Hunter: World: This resulted in the game being filled with kids that can't afford MH:W from Fortnite
    - UI is obviously made for consoles. The menus are humongous, your character is very close to the screen, etc.
    - Microtransactions in your face at every shop
    - Terrible graphics, terrible distance rendering on details. The game feels like a stretched out 480p YouTube video on max graphics. The depth of field is atrocious. Blurs objects 5m out. Objects are only clear 2m away in towns. My eyes hurt in town sometimes. This feels like a mobile game put on the PC.
    - Laggy servers (most likely will be fixed with time)
    - Bugs, clunky movement, attacks that don't connect well, clipped 3-4 times through the ground (it IS a Beta to be fair)
    - Easy game if you're not stun-locked to death by a behemoth ability (Island 4 - that's when I stopped playing)

Buy MH:W. This is a rip off.

Monster Hunter but way more casual with a toxic community. Terrible UI, ugly graphics and characters that look as crap as Fortnite, simpleMonster Hunter but way more casual with a toxic community. Terrible UI, ugly graphics and characters that look as crap as Fortnite, simple features like blocking a character or cancel matchmaking don't exist, Pay to win, Epic Games Exclusive, poor servers, poor hub, constant crashes, alt+F4 is your best friend, etc.

Save your space and ignore this crappy game. Also played on PS4 and PC... no difference outside of Frame Rate and Graphics. Deleted them both.
