But let's be honest, it is not Witcher 3. The main problem is that game doesnt excel at anything - shooting is good but not great, driving around is good but not great, visuals are good but not great, story line is good but not great, characters are good but not great. On top of this you have some bugs (even if not that many in my case, but I guess there are systems which are more buggy).

I must say I am disappointed, I am CDPR fan, was waiting for this game, preordered (first time ever, as a gratitude token for W3) and this happened. I can understand how people are annoyed

I haven't run into any of the technical issues others have had and the game runs great maxed out for me. My biggest gripe with this game is a complete lack of "open world" that was promised. Feels like Cyberpunk 2077 is more Marketing then an actual game, you can run through the city hear quite murmuring and distant gunshots but the world is DEAD. Coming from GTA , RDR2 and Watch Dogs there is literally nothing going on this "Massive Open World". The AI is also just as terrible and the Cop mechanic is just plain broken. AI doesn't respond to much of anything short of direct, in public view acts of violence then just spawns crappy AI cops out of no where. Just hijack a car while being wanted by the police and drive away, they won't even chase. You can find a group of cops standing around a staged "scene" kill them, wait for the reinforcements to spawn in from thin air, kill them until it gets too dicey then just drive away a little. Come back, loot bodies and repeat for easy exp and money. AI cars also just are programed to drive into view and back out, if you block the road with a car they will just sit there and form a endless queue. No honks, no going around, they just sit and accept their fate.

IF Cyberpunk 2077 wasn't marketed as the next big step in RPGs, the next evolution in Open World Games it'd be a solid 9 out of 10. This game is markedly lacking in many aspects. It feels like a games that mechanics were designed 10 years ago and stay there. If this game was released in 2012 it would be Game of the Year. It feels dated, old, uninspired and a bit rushed. This is far from the next step in gaming as it was advertised. It is a solid Action Adventure game billed as ground breaking Open World RPG. Fixing the dead world and fixing the AI would go a long way, would be far from perfect but a good step forward.

As the state of this game is now, don't consider to buy it unless you have a super PC with an 3080 RTX. Otherwise the performance is just sub-par.

As for last-gen consoles owners (PS4, Xbox) just don't buy it, it's unplayable. you'll get crashes, graphics that looks like a PS2 game, and dips to 10 FPS making it more like a slideshow.

CD Projekt Red lied to you, console owners.

Maybe on PS5 or Xbox series next, after CD Projekt Red has released multiple updates and patches for those platforms, it might be playable on consoles.

No wonder they didn't allow reviewers to use their own screenshots/videos in their PC reviews, and certainly no wonder they didn't send out console versions to reviewers so the obvious problems with those versions couldn't be published beforehand.

The current version, even with the day 0/1 patch, is a beta, and the consumers are the play-testers. it seems obvious that CD Projekt Red had to release this before the holiday season, no matter what, even if it means giving themselves a bad name forever.

Well done CD, you just utterly ruined your reputation being one of the "good guys" in gaming industry, please take your seat next to EA and Ubisoft at the table of shame. I suggest you give all that money you tricked people out of back to them, and dissolve the company. but not before you put out enough patches to make this game remotely playable.

If you hype a game this much, don't be surprised if it backfires in your face like a nuclear bomb when it turns out to be crap.

In the 7 hours or so of gameplay so far I've experienced at least 5 bugs, 2 visual, 3 AI related. Playing on normal I've also found AI to be exceedingly stupid, 80% of the time the AI will just try to bum rush me leading to their swift, imminent death. When the AI isn't doing this they are completely ignoring me to shoot at other AI even when I am standing right next to them shooting them. PC controls are also garbage as there are a lot of keys you flat out cannot bind. A lot of gameplay mechanics tend to also be an awkward mix of RPG and FPS elements mashed together, for example the "armour" you wear also helps with your "street cred", however inexplicably you can pick up items that look like a 70 year olds cardigan and somehow that will give you more street cred than the cool leather biker jacket you have on. This mechanic simply is not needed, nor is it welcome due to the broken nature of it especially with so many other ways you can improve street cred. Graphically the game is a real letdown as well it is painfully obvious this game has been made to run on 7+ year old console hardware. If you upgraded your GPU special for this game you wasted your money it'll run nicely on an overclocked RX580/590 with optimised memory timings. In my case that means £370 needlessly down the drain in total as I went and spent £320 on a 5700XT expecting this game to at least try and push some sort of boundary... it does not.

TLDR; Wait for the proper next gen version of the game as this version should have been aborted before birth.

I've played 52 hours and completed the main story and all side missions. I have not bothered to replay on different life paths because being a corpo on my main playthrough had negligible impact to the game.

You can drive.. you can do missions, you can do side missions, and that's it. Those are the three main things you do in Cyberpunk. There are no extra activities, mini games, or anything resembling a non-linear experience.

The mission system allows a choice of stealth or all out guns blazing.. there are very few dynamic mission choices that allow you to solve problems in your own way. I can't blackmail an NPC into giving me the objective because in a previous mission I found evidence of them doing something nasty. That kind of continuity does not exist in Cyberpunk's world. The most I can do is make decisions which lead down linear paths. Often the same path with an inconsequential alteration frankly.

Unlike Deus Ex or similar games, I can't talk my way past a guard or npc, I can't disguise myself and blag my way into a lounge to steal the objective. I can't choose to steal the objective from the transport it's in or something like that. I can't open a sewer grate and sneak under the building to come up inside the place etc. There are almost never alternative approaches to a mission. It's just a straight linear experience. It's always blast your way in or sneak in, and fetch something.

On the subject of npcs, you can go and talk to an NPC but they just spout a canned one line response. Why can't I have a conversation with them? That has been done in so many RPGs even dating back to games in the 80s. You should be able to talk to NPCs and have a basic branching dialogue. It really should not have been difficult to do this.

There is no player customization, the items you pick up in game are VERY lack luster for the most part. There is one badass gun that Johnny has and when you finally get it they **** nerf it on you. What a **** killjoy.

It's not a living, breathing world where an npc will remember your face and throw you out of a club.

There are many interesting locations in the world and you visit them once for a single generic mission. Inside those places there is typically nothing. No interesting items or things to interact with, just nice decorum if you're lucky. Often the design of bars or places is VERY confusing and poorly signed so you'll end up racing from room to room trying to find this chip.

Picking up items is a nightmare they will probably never patch because I'd say it has to be fixed per item which would be a monumental task.

The game was clearly far too ambitious and they were forced to release it once they had the graphics and story done because people wanted ROI. Well.. jokes on those people a good portion of sales are getting refunded now and I certainly will not be rushing to buy the next game. I'll wait for reviews and reactions next time.

I can only pray they have content lined up for this game because it genuinely is a massive let down if the only thing it has is this Johnny story. I love Keanu Reeves too but I did not expect the entire game to revolve around his story in the game.

I would die and have to reload my games, this has happened twice now.

    Not including bugs 6/10:
    But why only a 6?
-The gunplay feels old and bullet spongy, it’s basically a tuned down borderlands. To kill enemies without the right upgrades, you literally have to shoot their heads like 10 times and throw 3 grenades at them. Luckily the AI is so bad it’s very easy to do.
    - Some large areas of the map are crazy barren. There’s no cars, no people, despite their being considerable infrastructure. Clearly just sets for missions to be ran on.
-the missions are scripted very heavily. The dialogue options mostly go 1 direction despite you wanting to try another. There are instances where your HP loss is a fixed value, and the enemies very obviously have the same outcome regardless of how much you shoot them.
-There’s not much to do in the city aside from shoot angry dudes. There’s basically only spots with enemies that are hanging around, no other forms of interaction. -No flying vehicles, and the ground based vehicles you have drive like **** The cars don’t feel like they have any future tech associated with them, and the motorcycle physics are a joke. If you drive a big truck, the camera sits behind it and you can’t see. You can’t even shoot out tires on cars. Hijacking requires you to have a certain skill level to have the strength to take it from someone; even if they’re dead and the window is shot open.
-there has yet to be a single substantial NPC or interaction I have found outside of the games missions/story arc. Where the hell is all the substance in this world beyond the cyberpunk looks? Hot dog vendors literally just tell you “The **** you want?” And then proceed to run out of generic dialogue options. People in the club are just like, “Uhhh, can I help you?”
-Police do not have the AI to drive after you, they spawn after you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The good: Nightcity looks pretty.

    The bad:

    1. Enemies are bullet sponges, you need multiple headshots to kill them.

    2. AI is atrocious, to the point of being nonexistent:

Cops literally spawn on top of you and execute you if you do something illegal, even in the desert. Also, cops cannot use vehicles at all. Yes, car chases are not on the menu, except for some scripted missions.
NPC don't react to the context, they just move around on predetermined paths and don't do anything else. Same 1-2 lines, same movement. You can watch someone knock on a door for hours if that's your jam. That respective door will not open :)

    3. Customization is really bland:

-weapons have 2 slots for mods and don't really do anything special. Only the shown DPS number matters. Clothing is the same with the added disadvantage that you can't decide how you look when you equip something with better stats.

    4. Character development:

The character stats + perks are absolutely forgettable, Torchlight 1 or Diablo 2 had better skill stats/trees and those are 20 year old games. Why couldn't they just copy something from Fallout/ Deus Ex etc if they couldn't come up with something decent ? Warning: melee sucks, invest in guns. Also stealth is a joke/waste of time. You can't complete missions being stealthy. That may change after patch 2.31 though (we're at patch 1.04 now )

5.The story itself is generic: the NPCs that give you jobs are just talking heads on a phone screen, there's zero connection to anyone.

TL,DR: the game systems lack (any) depth, AI is nonexistent. Wait for patch 2.31 and buy it on a 50% sale at least. The game feels and plays like a F2P game, but has the gall to call itself AAA Title and wants 60$/€.

The world we were promised: deep and open with all of these stores and buildings!

The world we got: A very big open base map, then a bunch of tall buildings that are empty or even worse, completely inaccessible. Stores that are all copied and pasted, 1 after another. Quests that are no better than WoW Vanilla quests that are 15 years old at this point.

In my opinion, they got to 2018 and saw they weren't able to deliver the things they promised with their engine. Instead of shifting or retooling the engine, they decided they'd go hire a big voice actor that is popular in the genre and rewrite the entire game. I wish I had some actual details for behind the scenes, and maybe they will come out some day, but I have a strong gut feeling that this is pretty much what occurred.

Overall, I give Cyberpunk 2077 a 40%. Nothing new. Tons of bugs. A very forgettable and unfinished story.

This game has tons of issues. Story itself is not that bad but bugs and visual glitches make the game unplayable. The most disturbing thing is that the lack of AI in the game. All of the NPCs do weird things all the time; they're not intelligent at all. The world doesn't feel alive at all. Only positive thing about this game is its story and music. The gameplay is very shallow and the choices inconsequential. It's more borderlands than witcher 3, and there is very little punk to be found.
It's shiny, but not chrome and the game feels early access with many pointless mechanics or half assed concepts and designs

The AI is none existent, no police chases the cops just spawn on you when you have committed a crime and its buggy as hell. Game has released on consoles broken with CDPR knowing this. They made their money on the pre orders and that's all that matters.... your money. CD Projekt finally bit off more than they could chew.

As a studio they have a long standing reputation for charging headlong into problems, verging on the brink of bankruptcy, throwing crunch and "can-do" attitude at it. As a studio they have a long standing reputation for charging headlong into problems, verging on the brink of bankruptcy, throwing crunch and "can-do" attitude at it. And it has worked for them in the past; Witcher 2, Witcher 3 and Thronebreaker are highly regarded games. As are the Witcher 3 expansions. Even Witcher 1, despite its many bugs, shortcomings and clunky control issues at the time, is mostly remembered fondly these days.

But the day finally came when Icarus flew too close to the sun, when throwing crunch and man-hours at a problem wasn't enough. With Cyberpunk 2077 the studio forged into a completely new territory for them; completely new visual style, new weapon mechanics, driving mechanics, hacking mechanics, completely different lore and universe etc.

The smart thing do to would have been to make a smaller, tighter story-driven game in the cyberpunk universe. Something to dip their toes while figuring out shooting and driving mechanics and how really big modern cities work. But no, that apparently isn't the CD Projekt way. Their new game was to be the biggest and boldest interpretation of a modern future city ever conceived, intended to make Rockstar look like wannabe upstarts.

But sadly it didn't work, whatever the failings of Cyberpunk 2077 are they aren't to be blamed on the developers but on the outright hubris exhibited by upper management. You can't make such a big studio turn on a dime and have them develop a type of game they've never developed before. Or maybe you can but it's an extremely high-risk play and in this case here the end product has suffered enormously, the reputation of CDPR has been forever tarnished and I'm sure there are hundreds of developers who wonder if it was really worth their time.

CD Projekt needs a serious management overhaul, as a studio they've grown massively over the years but they've seriously underestimated the long-term planning and steadfast vision required to run such a studio. They managed to make Witcher 3 because it was a universe, setting and collection of tools they were familiar with. But when the time came to go in a new direction they grossly underestimated the difficulty of doing so, this is not a sign of good management or leadership.

I would recommend to CD Projekt that their next game be a Witcher universe game with a smaller scope and tighter plot than Witcher 3, and make it perfect and bug free. Something to get back on their fans good side again, and patch Witcher 3 with better graphics and a few bug fixes and tweaks for free. Then in 6-7 years time revisit Cyberpunk again, and this time make the game you actually wanted to make because clearly you didn't manage it this time. The new Cyberpunk 2 team should start now.

The best metaphor for Cyberpunk 2077 is Johnny Silverhand himself. A messiah, a mix of Kurt Cobain and Che Guevara, a talented singer who loves to shape his own legend and has a charming personality but loses the struggle with his own demons. The same goes for the game. It tells a great story and forced me to ask myself difficult questions, but many of its gameplay mechanics do not evolve and its technical state upon release was abysmal. Cyberpunk’s true hero is not a person, but Night City – a vibrant, living creature of great diversity. The beauty of the metropolis is striking. [01/2021, p.22]

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most disturbing and mind-blowing RPGs in history, where every decision has a deep impact on our trail. CD Projekt RED tosses us to the center of a city filled with disgusting delights where every character deserves our attention in an immersive experience and overall, very rewarding. From the sarcastic and shadowy tone imposed by the countless scenes in the game, to the flexibility we have on the choices to face every situation that is presented, Night City is truly memorable. It’s a shame that the countless bugs spoil or diminish the impact of some resounding moments, but we are without a question, in the presence of one of the best games in 2020.

Measured against the extreme expectations, Cyberpunk 2077 can't fulfill any of them. But all in all, despite the countless small weaknesses and inconsistences, with interesting characters, great story and dialogues or the freedom concerning gameplay, CD Projekt delivers a unique and great RPG that every fan of the genre needs to play.
