45 hours of the best co-op Ive ever played in my life. I played with my brother, and we both agree, its not just the best co-op game, but the best multi-player game we've played together. Its hard to feel super satisfying when you complete a level, but not impossibly hard. Knockout!

Really good idea the 30' years game graphic. A good run n'gun where you can shoot blue laser by your hand! A good cartoon stile, and also hard. Very hard. I played this with some of my friends, and trust me, it may be really hard and it may explode your head by the rage, but if you complete a boss or a level, you feel the champion of the world. Sometimes the boss will have a little cue when it’s about to do an attack, but sometimes not. That’s just poor design. You can’t expect me to just guess when they are going to take up half the screen with an attack. They also have tons of enemy spam and it’s especially annoying since the backgrounds are so detailed, the enemies can blend in with it and you won’t know what’s going on. Also sometimes the game will literally trap you somewhere and forces you to get hit. The only motivation I have to 100% (technically 200% because it’ll say that on my file) the game is that I payed 20$ for it. Expand

If I want a challenge I go play Contra games, which are unforgiving but at least fair, and while you show your skills you have amazing alien themes and some amazing level design to enjoy. I have heard this game is way too hard, and again, the difficulty is not based on fair gameplay, instead it is based of handicapping the player with awful controls, unfair enemies and poor hitbox detection, I am glad this game was dead in weeks. We don't need this indie crap, we need a new AAA Contra or Metal slug title (2D) Expand

Although one could characterize the game as "die and retry", it's much more than than it says: discovering the different shapes of each boss is fascinating and challenging, and every time you die you'll dive back in the challenge with great pleasure.

Artistically, Cuphead is simply perfect. From character design to animations, environments, the effort to recreate the cartoon world of the 30's pays off and Studio MDHR deliver a coherent colorful, frenzied universe which totally fits the cynical but funny story of the main characters. I can't emphasize enough how great the art is and how well it serves the gameplay and the pleasure of playing.

Speaking of art, the OST is divine. I had never bought any OST on Steam before, but for Cuphead it seemed like the very least I could do to thank the composer Kris Maddigan of his work, a real piece of art ! The rag-jazz mix is amazing and and fits the frenzy of the gameplay perfectly.

Using the Remote Play feature, it is now possible to play the whole in coop online with a friend (and also locally). Hours of fun and challenge in perspective.

There's so much more to say about this game, but you need to discover it by yourself. It's one of the best games I played in these last years. And don't wait for discounts, even the full price is cheap considering the quality and the huge work behind this game.

Whenever I hear someone complaining about Cuphead, the only valid argument they have is that it is the most difficult game of all damn time. Besides that, it's the most fun I've had playing any game of any type. Co-op is especially enjoyable, due to the fact that you are constantly reviving one another, and simultaneously getting your ass handed to you by some bee lady who has police connections.

The run and gun levels are quite fun, but feel more like bonus levels to get coins rather than central to the game. In addition to that, you don't need to beat the run and gun levels to beat the game, but it sure does help as you can unlock coins in these levels which allow you to buy charms and weapons. This game is a waste of money, the reason being that it's boring and has no story whatsoever, also, it's repetitive. I don't find any entertainment in a game that I can only move right and just shoot at things continuously with three lives all the time. When you compare it to the legendary Super Mario world and Donkey Kong country, it is clear that Cuphead has nothing to offer. Super mario world gives you a lot of innovation, with abilities such as Yoshi while Donkey Kong Country gives you all sorts of different abilities which make the game more engaging. In my opinion, Cuphead offers nothing like that. I think when it comes to platformers like this, you need to think beyond the box and that's what hasn't been delivered here.

The only thing that redeems Cuphead's qualities are it's amazing art style which is brilliant but the gameplay is just boring, it put me to sleep very quickly. Don't believe the hype on this one and pass it.

This game has a great soundtrack, a nice classic cartoony feel to the game, and doesn't have a steep learning curve. It tests your reaction time and your ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations, because no two bosses are the same, and each boss has several stages to them.

This game is not impossibly hard like the other games these days that try to copy the Dark Souls formula, but it is definitely not a walk in the park. Prepare to get frustrated, and take breaks when you do.

Overall, this game is not intended for the faint of heart. If you have poor reaction time, maybe you should watch others play it instead. I'm only in my 20s writing this review, and I feel like I can't keep track of everything that's going on. It is very overwhelming. I actually gave up and quit halfway because I got tired of having to try so hard. But I still enjoyed the game a lot before I did.

If you're not the kind of person who likes bruteforcing hard bosses over and over for hours, you might want to consider passing on this game.

Say I Disagree with this game.
We had Sonic, Animanics, BATIM and Now Cuphead. all them mostly been used to the Classic Cartoon to give them pouplar and newer to the fan To milking the Franchise and Fandom.
This game is just not that good.

    -Too Overrated
    -No Plot, No Depevoment

Challenging, frustrating but brilliant. When I'm constantly losing from a (predictably) bouncing ball even though the controls are excellent, can't blame the game for my frustration - I just need to find the right way.
Has anybody here mentioned the excellent audio/visuals? :)

Cuphead brings a vision which everyone would like to "review". With their graphics very well designed, your story and gameplay (despite being simpler) also lead the player to want to end the game. Its difficulty, although disturbing, is a challenge that ultimately test the patience of the Viewer. Exactly what we expected.

Moving on, this is very likely the most overrated game I've ever played. None of the bosses feel memorable, and this is an immense issue considering that 90% of the gameplay is boss fights. For me, it never feels like anything more than a bullet hell with different visuals and slightly different jazz playing in the background. It's largely trial and error with some (sometimes offensively bad) rng mixed in. Let's make an analogy to my favourite game of all time - Hollow Knight. HK has this exact issue with the final boss of the pantheons, who in fear of spoilers, will remain unnamed. Now imagine that boss, but it's the entire game. A grindy demi-bullet hell that rides solely off of visuals and music. The difference being, the HK boss is considered one of the weaker ones in the game, and Cuphead is somehow one of the most popular games of 2017.
Given this, It must sound like I straight-up detest the game. Not that anything I say matters very much, I'm sure innumerate people will dislike this review the instant they see the yellow. So what did I like about this game?
Well the controls were sufficient, the arbitrary artistic enjoyment was there, and the game was decently entertaining.
    And that's about it.

-The gamemplay is incredibly addicting. The one thing i'll give Cuphead is that it is one of the most rewarding games i've ever played. The feeling that you'll get when you defeat a really hard boss is downright orgasmic. However not all is right here

    Cons:
-The game is way too hard. I know that the get gud crowd will attack but honestly i really don't care. There is a difference between challenging difficulty (Like Princess Bon Bon and the frog brothers) and cheap difficulty (Like that bee **** and King Dice which is just a collection of go **** yourself).
-There's no point to the easy difficulty. It's just there to tease you. Either don't have easy difficulty or have it be able to progress the game
-And finally i did run into a couple of game breaking glitches

And there you go. Cuphead is definetly a good game but it is still very overrated

The difficulty provided by the bosses could leave anyone crying, especially that stupid dragon ( I want to kill that dragon), but the sense of achievement given when defeating even the easy bosses is as good as beating some games in there entirety. Overall the game controls greatly which you would hope for in a game as difficult as this, but if you are playing PC I highly recommend a controller. The music is razor tight always providing a great sense of atmosphere and just being generally great on your ears, this game has a soundtrack I would buy. You can tell from the beautiful hand drawn animations that this game had people's heart and souls poured into it which you can see in the final project as the game is so clean an polished. But the game is unforgiving if you aren't that good at the game or don't feel like being challenge there is an easier mode in the game you can pick just before the fight but not only does the game literally laugh at you for doing this but all it does is give you access to the next boss, meaning you have to redo the boss on the harder/normal difficulty to get the item needed to actually finish the game. Not only this but I believe the run and gun levels where unnecessary I won't go into this much because they were a last minute inclusion as people wanted the game to be more than a boss rush game but in my playthrough I did the first four run and gun levels, got the items I thought would be most helpful and just skipped all the others as there are enough hidden coins around the map to afford another item and some of them are harder than some of the bosses which meant they were just unnecessary pain. But to be honest this game is really worth the asking price, its fun to replay the game as things you found so difficult before are now somewhat easy which gives you a sense of accomplishment and the game is just fun which is all you really need in a video game. You know how a joke can start funny, get annoying, then become funny again through sheer attrition? That’s Cuphead’s approach to enjoyment. You know how a joke can start funny, get annoying, then become funny again through sheer attrition? That’s Cuphead’s approach to enjoyment. With a beautiful, caustic, near-unceasing stream of boss battles, Studio MDHR’s debut made me scream with joy and horror by turn, but I settled on joy by the end.

The most obvious point to begin with is that Cuphead looks astonishing. Its 1930s animation style – all watercolour backgrounds and surreal, juddering, hand-drawn characters – pay peerless homage to Max Fleischer and his ilk, and are perfectly implemented. Somehow it manages to balance dozens of moving elements and a slight rear-projection blur without ever feeling unreadable in even the most frantic moments. There has never been a game that looks like this and there may never be again. Every scene is a masterwork – it’s a near-unbelievable achievement for an art style.

The sound work is an ideal match: a huge jumble of high-tempo ragtime, swing, big band, and jazz (the list of musicians is almost as long as the rest of the credits combined) pummels away wonderfully in the background of every fight. It makes Cuphead feel truly out of time, and its bizarre mix of ‘30s aesthetics and ‘80s design more heady than ever. I also feel duty-bound to point out that the way Porkrind the shopkeeper bellows “welcome” made me laugh every single time I heard it.
There’s no doubt that it’s gorgeous, and many people will be drawn to that, but that veneer conceals a very niche, hardcore design. You may have gleaned by now that this game is really, really hard. It’s absolutely uncompromising in its difficulty from the outset. No level includes checkpoints and, barring one late-game match-up, there is no way to regain lost health. You could hit levels that take hours to beat, and the finale is locked off until you beat every other level on “Regular” difficulty (i.e. extremely difficult). And don’t think that local co-op will ease things up – dropping in a second player as Cuphead’s pal Mugman makes events onscreen that much harder to follow. I find it actively harder with a second player, if anything.

And so, as I played I gradually stopped noticing a lot of the glorious art, because actually interacting with Cuphead is so hectic, so stressful, that it just gets filed away by my right-brain as a distraction. That skyscraper-tall robot firing laser barriers is just three hovering hitboxes and a series of no-go zones. When one boxing glove-wearing frog eats another to turn itself into an evil slot machine, that’s nothing more than a phase change. My favourite boss design – a giant bird wearing cuckoo clock armour and its tiny, ray gun-wielding chick – fires wads of garbage at you by literally turning its head into a bin, but I only noticed that detail when I watched someone else play it hours later.

My favourite boss design – a giant bird wearing cuckoo clock armour and its tiny, ray gun-wielding chick – fires wads of garbage at you by literally turning its head into a bin, but I only noticed that detail when I watched someone else play it hours later.
Perhaps Cuphead’s smartest, most devilish addition is in how all these types of levels taunt you into playing more. No enemy has a health bar, nor an indication for when you’re getting close to a knockout – instead, when you die you’re shown a graph of how close you were to the KO or the next phase of the battle. It reduces screen clutter while also encouraging (or perhaps that should be “berating”) you into taking another crack at it.

Cuphead is as tough as it is beautiful, Cuphead won't be to everyone's tastes, but there's absolutely no doubting its quality.

You know, first this game seems like something hard. But then you start playing and playing, and playing, and you understand - this game hard, but SO F*CIKNG AMAZING. I ♥ CUPHEAD

Instant classic! I love a good platformer and this is an excellent one at that. The challenge is crazy, especially when you have OCD like myself and want to 100% every level and that includes not getting hit. The presentation is wonderful to look at as well which is a testament to the developers because we all know how much goes into animating.

    Demanding old school game.

His graphic is dedicated to the cartoons of Max Fleischer, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks of the 30s accompanied with a good soundtrack of blues music.

Even if you die a thousand times it will not tire you, it is highly additive.

My only big problem is with the shop system, everything else is awesome. The art style is phenomenal, the game-play is intense and responsive, and the game is hard in a good way. Excellent game overall.

Saying this game is beautiful is an understatement.

In an age where everything is huge CGI worlds with a 120 people team for graphism alone, where the search for the most realistic graphics is the ultimate goal, CupHead come as a refreshing simple 30s' inspired cartoons. The whole game is smooth, colorfull and inspired. The music is on par with a "big band" vibe that fits perfectly

It is hard. I have seen worst but it's hard. You still see progress every run you make and the game is verry generous that you can start a level again right away.

It's a nice Arcade style throwback experience. I strongly recommend if you like this kind of game, pure, arcade, frustrating, satisfaying, fun.

Kudos for the effort put into this. For going out of track for once.

As an old school gamer this title brings back memories of when completing games weren't about who had the most amount of time or money to buy loot crates, but rather who actually learned the game and memorized the patterns. In short: best players win.
For me it's one of those "just one more try" kind of games.
Will be looking forward to see what StudioMDHR is going to come up with in the future with great suspense!

I could only play this game now, Cuphead has a very high difficulty, it took me 30 minutes to pass the stages, the sounds and the visual enchanted me. It's a very good game.

This game is what we should call the Toy Story of video games. It has a well, unique, and developed story, the characters are really likable, and it not being able to reference alcohol and drugs is a well risk, the game is rather better the way it's now, and this game is good on its own, it was made to be that, so complaining for a sequel, not going to happen

The art style of Cuphead is what initially captured my attention. The art is hand-drawn and inspired by 1920's era cartoons, something I found to be a breath of fresh air with a unique quality that I've never experienced in a game before. The animations are a joy to watch with many new animations few each boss, I must have died 50 times overall trying to watch wildly varied boss transformations and attacks instead of dodging the projectiles. Nothing feels recycled at all.

Each boss has a highly personalized level aesthetic with 1920's inspired jazz that accompanies it perfectly. It was incredibly exciting to see each new level and see how the boss's aesthetic would fit into the scope of the landscape. The boss's that occupy each level are absolutely a joy to encounter, even if they're kicking your ass because of the level of attention of their animations, the level design, and the matching aesthetics of the music and bosses.

The game-play is incredibly tight. I can't recall an instance where I was hit due to poor controls or a bad hit box. When I was killed, which I died a lot, I felt that in 99% of cases it was due to a poor choice by me, with the other 1% being due to a boss using two abilities back to back that made it impossible to dodge. Even though I died a lot, it never frustrated me. The pacing of the boss battles makes each death feel like a learning experience rather than time lost. The boss battles average 2 minutes or so, with many deaths occurring in the first few phases as I tried to learn the patterns of the attacks and how to approach them better.

Cuphead is a highly engaging game that requires patience, thought, and skill to beat. It has pushed me to be a much better gamer because it pushed me to do things I didn't think I was possible of doing. The art style initially captured my attention, but gorgeous visuals can't carry a game. Cuphead is the complete package in terms of art, sound, and game-play. Thanks Studio MDHR for this experience. Thanks for not giving up on your dreams of making such an ambitious game.

The MAIN ISSUE with this game:

    - It is meant to be trial and error. Grinding, grinding, grinding, endless grinding until you know any level and any hard situation completely from memory.
    - It is mostly not "hard", it is unfair. That's a huge difference from fair games like Dark Souls. There is a lot of randomness in the patterns of enemies and projectiles. This goes so much against any notion of "skill-based". There is a HUGE difference between tough but ultimately doable, and sheer retrying to catch a lucky break and get a "doable" enemy pattern.
    - The collision detection is unforgiving to the point of unfairness. When you are unsure if something will hit you, when you might say "that will slightly miss", the game is sure - It will hit. Everything coming close is a hit. And everything is trying to get close all at once. Pair that with 3 hit points and stages taking 5 minutes to complete and you get a game where the main difficulty is lack of mobility coupled with randomness that creates undodgable situations ALL.THE.TIME.

Going for a 1920s cartoon style makes Cuphead stand out from any game today and very pleasent to look at, the music is also inspired from that time period making everything blend, and it is so good which is required since every boss has his own music, I never got tired of any of them, even dyng a lot on expert.
The only thing to mention is, the game is very difficult. This is one of those games, like Dark Souls, you will die a lot, recognise patterns and try again, every time getting closer and closer to beating the stage. I did not find this game to be too difficult, there are 3 difficulty settings Simple(Medium), Regular(Hard) and Expert(Frustratingly hard), although to advance in the game it is required to beat the stages in Regular.
I recommend playing with a friend, since both of you will die a lot this will make Cuphead a very funny experience.

Cuphead is a stunningly looking, wonderfully animated interactive cartoon with three hours of jazz and ragtime playing in the background. Its gameplay however lacks the brilliance of the audiovisual layer. [12/2017, p.46]

It is easy to tell that the developers studied the history of the genre through and through, delivering a stellar run and gun experience brought to life with unique old fashioned cartoon graphics. It may have it flaws, but when a game is this appealing it is easy to forgive.
