After waiting 5 yeas to play this on Steam called "Masterpiece", i've been let down quite harshly.

I tried talking to the villagers and doing their quest but my Quest NPC was stuck underneath lava, so i couldn't do that to level up.
The only decent item that i got was just lying in a random treestump somewhere in the world?
After collecting about 10 leftovers i got myself a new weapon and decided to fly with the eagle, the only good new feature that i've seen so far to a new area for 100gold (which is now the only currency you got R.I.P Copper and silver), just to notice that my hp dropped 60 points.
So there i was wondering what had happend.. And then it hit me YOUR ITEMS ARE REGIONLOCKED?? What? why? Wolfram? so i decided it wasn't worth it playing this dumbsterfire of a game for which i've waited 5 years to play.
And it doesn't have playerhousing sadly..

I've played alpha a lot. I liked it despite it's lack of content. New release in my opinion is just garbage. Can not recommend this game. After 8 hours i finished core gameplay (finished 1 region, ventured to the next one).

Finished most of the region I spawned into. Got 3 artifacts (maybe there were more) which give me a total buff off +2% climbing speed, +2% swimming speed and +1 radius of lantern. If someone can call this a progression then i don't know what to tell you... I am not

I am not spending more time to see my lamp radius go to +20 and my climbing speed (which i rarely climbed to be honest) go up to +40%
Every new region is a new start (unless you grind items with + in the name then items just get a little lower stats in adjacent regions), and i will not be doing them again (same quests, same locations) just for utility buffs which are to sum up:
    -climbing speed
    -swiming speed
    -diving speed
    -riding speed
    -hang gliding speed
    -sailing speed
    -light radius

Your character is not getting stronger ever period.
It will be exactly as powerful after 8 hours of gameplay, as it will be after 400 hours of gameplay. You can get legendary gear after 8 hours or probably even sooner, and that is as strong as you can get.

    TL:DR
If you are looking for a game which you can invest 10 hours gameplay total than sure buy it, but if you are looking for 50+ hours gameplay don't bother, there is not enough to do.
You are not gaining any power, as you gather those so called artifacts, which are just utility buffs.

If things will change, or content will be added/updated/changed this review might change.

"We got rid of skill trees; they were old and lame! Who needs a leveling system in a roleplaying game?" - Wollay, 2019

Here's a brief list of cut, planned, and teased content that people paid for due to it being an advertised aspect of the game, yet doesn't actually exist:

No Mac compatibility, no console release, no new classes, no new playable races, no advanced skill trees, no building/decorating your own house, gliders now punish you by stunning you more than 10 times as often as they did in alpha, climbing is nowhere near as fluid and intuitive as it used to be, bodies of water no longer have enemies in them (this includes fish, which walk on dry land now), no more giant pyramid dungeons in jungle biomes, there's no longer any system in the entire game that allows you to choose how your character progresses such as the specific skill leveling system the alpha, no pirates on boats (only dry land. Makes sense, right?), none of the planned boss monsters, no normal cities, no capital cities, no ability to join any of the factions...

No more choosing your own world seed to explore unique, interesting areas since the world now uses the same seed every time which infinitely loops the exact same types and shapes of biomes in the exact same order in all directions after awhile (great game design!), LAN multiplayer is no longer possible, roads now always lead nowhere instead of being guaranteed to lead to/from a point of interest and can no longer cut through mountains making interesting, comfy tunnels, alpha had cool guild halls for all the different classes - rogues had a dojo, warriors had a sentry tower, rangers had an archery range, and mages had a training den with dummies and bookcases - but Wollay decided that we can't have nice things so he removed them all and replaced them with a grossly generic building called "The Guild," crossbows no longer drop for some unexplained reason, they can only be crafted (and crafted items almost always have worse stats than quest drop items)...

No PvP, no PvP online ladders, when you die you no longer respawn near where you died to allow you to get back to what you were doing at a reasonable pace; now you nearly always respawn miles away, usually forcing you to tediously waste massive amounts of time slogging your way back to where you were & what you were doing each time you die, no more spirit cubes (which would've mostly fixed the broken region locking system - your gear would lose its stats but you'd keep your spirit cubes; that theoretical system would've allowed players to progress at a steady, but not overpowered, rate), no race-specific headgear, no vanity items, no experimental massive servers, no savanna biome, no undead biome without vegetation, no mushroom biome with huge insects, no coherent, in-game story that you can experience from start to finish, no rare pets, no pet evolution...

    Building houses (thanks u/MrDooni)
    Dedicated Servers (Thanks u/050)
    "Special" city quests
Villagers that don’t keep running into walls
    Rune Magic (Thanks this name...)
Many more potion types (Thanks u/jgmc2)
    Signs that point towards villages
    Better arena
    Skill trees
    EXP
Factions with a king/leader that you can meet (Thanks this name...)
    Grand Quests
    Quest log
Quest type that utilizes the pet pick up feature
Quest type in which you are supposed to activate a landmark
    Eavesdropping quest type

    Etc, etc, etc.

Leaving up videos and descriptions of things that aren't actually in the product you're selling is not okay. Devs should be held accountable for not deleting misleading descriptions, videos, etc. that generate false hype & sales under false pretenses when they know such content isn't actually in the product they're selling.

Some people are confused about the cut content vs. planned content vs. teased content, so I've written a TL;DR for all 3:
Content that was planned for the future when thousands of people bought the game in 2013, but never ended up being delivered despite having over 6 years to implement it: ~98% of it.
Enjoyable content that existed in alpha but was inexplicably cut: ~40%.
Content he showed off as being in the game - some of it merely weeks before the beta release - but doesn't actually exist: >90%.
Do you see why most people are so fed up with this?

It should never have taken over 6 years to deliver the game in this soulless state when ~140% of what they're giving us already existed in a superior state in alpha.
Learn from our mistakes. Don't buy this game that has a mere fraction as much content, fun, freedom to choose how you play and progress, and replayability as it did more than 6 years ago.

"You're never getting bored with infinite quests! (That give you rusty swords and used pregnancy tests...) There's nothing left to do but vent your frustration. No more fun and skills, only degradation!" - Wollay, 2019

Game was released as an "alpha' 6 years ago. Throughout the years the developer posted updates via Twitter, however not one single one of those update tweets is actually in the game. It's very obvious the developer was running low on money so he released this scam in attempt to pocket more money before he stops updating the game again.

It has potential, but until the developer pulls his head out of the ground and starts communicating with his loyal fanbase that's been waiting for over 6 years to play his novel little MMO-lite experiment, it's not worth anyone's time.

I understand rebalancing the game to make it so that the end-game has more meaning and isn't so boring, but in the process the developer made EVERYTHING about the game ungratifying and tedious. You die in almost every encounter, you lose all of your armor every time you change areas, and the only permanent aspect of the game that buff your stats are negligible traits like "increases swimming speed." Even something as simple and fun as grinding for EXP has been removed, so you have almost no reason to kill mobs except to hope they drop gear you can use, which becomes useless once you walk to an adjacent biome.

    Insulting.

A game that prides itself on replayability and exploration but actively punishes you for playing, and removes necessary exploration features like fun travel options and map fog. You can see everything on the map from the start which defeats the purpose. Exploring into a new area removes all of your previous progress and starts you over from the beginning, also taking away your travel gadgets so you're back to plain old walking. About the best thing you can hope to "progress" with is a permanent 2.5% climbing speed boost after 5 hours of gameplay. You've accomplished nothing else.
Balance is all over the place, with you either dying in one hit or being wildly more powerful than everything else in the area. Power jumps around sporadically with each piece of dropping gear, instead of having a logical, gradual progression to the top. Ultimate abilities are about the only thing that matters, and combat largely revolves around abusing design flaws, cheesing, or one-shotting everything.

Even the most hardcore lovers of this genre (if you can even fit this "game" into a genre) like myself will seriously struggle to find their enjoyment. In all, this is a slap in the face to any followers of the game, because after 6 years all the developer has managed to do is stroke his own ego by removing old, good features and thinking he had struck gold with this inane concept. And after 6 years of playing this game, about the only thing you'll manage to accomplish is getting an extra +1 meter to your lamp light radius. Don't waste your time.

The EXP system is gone, but there is a new loot and regionlocking system, which doesnt really work. The lack of Tooltips, Tutorials and Explanations is just baffling to me.

-No character progression. You start with all of your skills and they don't get stronger in any way.
-You can't sort your inventory any more
-You can't zoom in or out. Scroll wheel zooms the map and the binds for zoom in and out don't work.
-Leftovers never drop for your class. The only useable thing i have received from them were rings and amulets
-Gear is region locked. INCLUDING THE BOAT AND HANG GLIDER. Seriously, Wollay must just be trolling because nobody could possibly think that's a good idea. People say that you get + gear once you complete a zone, but it is still very rare to get a + item. I've only seen one drop, and of course it was for a different class
-Ninja has been completely ruined. This might be a side effect of no more skill trees, and should be noted that I've only played rogue. The stars you throw are now a 60 second cooldown. At the beginning of the game you will find yourself waiting for that cooldown to do any damage to literally anything.
-Killing mobs is not rewarding (no exp)
-Mobs are few and far between in the open world. This would be more of an issue if the previous point wasn't true
-Crafting is useless now because of region locking

    Now for what's better:
    -The map is nicer
-Teleporting? I'm not sure if this is good or bad though because it was exciting to find portals in the alpha
    -Music was added
-The bosses are easier to determine if you can kill them or not. (less of them have unreasonable amounts of health, although the unreasonable amounts of damage are still there)
-World bosses are sort of worth killing, unlike in the alpha where they gave cubes that often couldn't be used
-Pseudo-quests, but the daily quests are gone

Yeah that's it. Just find the alpha version and play that

    Cons:
    - No tutorial.
    - You have no "starter" zone. You get spawned randomly in the world from the Flight Master. I first started off in a zone where in 360 degrees of my vision Level 3 - 4 mobs are spawning near me. How am I suppose to kill these creatures? Because of this, I stopped playing.

Sadly since release, 0 communication has been released yet. A full day has passed, both Wolfram and Pixxie are off the grid right now. I spent $19.99 on launch day in hope to support you to maybe have future expansions to new DLC classes, it seems, I was mistaken?

As of September 29th, 2019, Cube World has become abandonware. Don't expect any updates to the game.

He released like one, maybe two public updates the entire time and then went completely dark again. And he did it for years. Once in awhile he would release a screen shot on his social media account and that was it.

I didn't even know Wollay even "finished" the game because I had completely forgot about this game and just assumed I had my money stolen, since I bought a copy for myself and another friend.

I managed to get them to send me a STEAM key and now I am now seeing how terrible this product is from what it used to be. Further, there are people on Reddit who are pirating the Alpha version of the game that you can no longer download because it was actually better than this.

If Wollay ever updates this game ever again, or even responds to all of the pleas people have been sending him, I'll be very surprised. Everyone should take note of this entire disaster and never support this developer ever again.

    - Randomly generated lore is very well implemented;
    - New pets to tame;
    - New bosses to fight;

I get that most of the critics will come from people o played the game when it was released in its alpha state where the paradigm of the game was a lot different. In my opinion that's not a bad thing in itself, I like the new progression system, I just think that needs to be balanced... that's all.

Acquiring artifacts needs to be more meaningful for the player, and region-locked gear, I think it can work but for the time I've played, I feel the problem is the drop rates of gear that works in more than one region. Big bosses should have more probability to drop those kinds of gear.

Looking forward to see what comes next to this game...

As of now artifacts only buff your exploration stats which is a bit lackluster hence the 8 review. The new system fixes the higher level player playing with lower level while getting good reward problem which exists in pretty much all the RPG games out there. It is a pretty innovative yet unique system that still has some flaws obviously, but hopefully future update from Wollay will fix the problems. Expand

The beta or alpha was my childhood and it was great I spent a lot of time immersed and travelling thru the world but when it came out and I was really hyped it just wasn't the same and I quickly lost interest in it so yeah kinda sad to see a game die like this.

    How do you doit?
How do you go from the most complete apha project in the world to date, to a completely different, inferior product? Finding out the answer to this question will also answer why Cube World's final release is one of the most disappointing things that I've ever saw. The game was perfectly design by the start, like minecraft, but at some point the Dev scrapped all of, All.

Of. It. And for what reason? Better gameplay? No, infinitely less appealing. Better Frame rate? Well that can be fixed without trampling over the initial game design. Better playability? Maybe yes, and also a big no; nothing makes sense anymore, everything was dumbed down and you feel no sense of progress whatsoever because the game reboots your ass everytime you open a new area.

I just can't get over it. This is the most tragic career-ending mistake a human being can possibly make. If I could review specifically Cube World Alpha, I would give it a 7-8 out of 10. I cannot say the same to this. The Alpha had a better case against minecraft and terraria to this day than the final product ever will, let that sink in again.

So yeah, don't play it. Don't contribute to this travesty. Let it die, and maybe one die we can have Cube World Alpha 2. I just hope the Dev isn't hanging by the roof at this point, I would, honestly.

What I absolutely do not think is right: to sell a half-cooked game as a "finished" product - with less content than six years ago! Because so leaves the completely surprising release of Cube World a more than bland connotation.
