Despite a minor hiccup with a save issue, the overall polish and responsiveness from the developers leave a strong impression. For players who enjoy narrative- driven investigations with psychological depth, this is a journey well worth taking.

A wonderfully deep (ha!) puzzle detective game, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss treads a fantastic line of respecting the source material, updating it in a fresh way, and delivering some deliciously restrained horror.

The need to read notes and logs to progress may not appeal to action-oriented players, but this approach feels like a natural evolution of the adventure genre. And it works.

Its puzzles may leave something to be desired, but Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss legitimately feels like one of Lovecraft’s dark stories experienced first-hand.

Big Bad Wolf's latest is a visually arresting Lovecraftian deep-dive that prioritizes "big brains" over big guns, but its overly safe structure prevents it from reaching true horror greatness. While the 2053 tech-noir setting is a brilliant spin on the mythos, the thalassophobia here is mostly "vibes" and very little bite. The investigative loop is genuinely high-brow, featuring a complex sonar-based system that rewards meticulous detail-hunting. However, the total absence of combat or persistent physical threats makes the 11-hour journey feel like a guided tour of an underwater museum rather than a desperate struggle for survival. Branching paths and multiple endings provide some much-needed narrative stakes, yet the AI companion, Key, feels like a hollow shell of what a modern interactive partner should be. It’s an essential pick for lore-hungry detectives and tech enthusiasts wanting to push Path-Tracing to its limits, but hardcore horror fans will likely find the lack of "Game Over" consequences a bit underwhelming. A sophisticated investigative gem that desperately needs more teeth.

Rather than delivering a consistently smooth experience, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a game that thrives in its investigation systems, atmosphere, and environmental storytelling. At its best, the game makes you feel like you’re actively reconstructing events rather than simply progressing through them. However, the experience is held back by uneven pacing and occasional controller mishaps. The result is a strong but imperfect experience that resonates more as a standout concept than a fully polished execution.

A game that isn’t afraid to let players muddle through it on their own is an idea to be lauded, and here there is a core mystery that will provide a compelling enough reason to continue if you can get into the rhythm of the puzzling.

At times innovative and, above all, immersive, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss offers a solid experience for a mystery game, but it sorely lacks the horror element that’s supposed to send shivers down your spine.

Odd missteps in its storytelling and an unfortunate amount of bugs that entirely blocked progression and left save files corrupted don't help its case, but when it's all working as it should, the gameplay generates a rewarding and fun loop that'll keep you glued to your screen as if Cthulhu already has full control of your mind.

The mechanics are interesting and promising but the lack of polish across multiple platforms and the inconsistency of responsiveness made for an overly frustrating time and I was ready for the game to end quite a bit before an incredibly complicated final puzzle. I’m glad that I persevered (albeit with the ingame AI assistance) as the ending felt appropriate. If you have the patience, and enjoy the setting, then there is some fun to be had, but perhaps wait for further patches for a less frustrating experience.

The Cosmic Abyss suffers from an overly long and exhausting plot, a forgettable and frankly unnecessary villain, a stamina system that felt tacked on more than anything else, and an empty, boring world. I wanted to like this game, but the negatives heavily outweigh the good. It’s a shame, because this is a game that does have potential, but it’s never able to realize it at all. In the end, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a mystery best left unsolved.

There is a general paucity of Lovecraftian thrills in this puzzle adventure, and as much as I try not to resent a game for the crime of simply being bad, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a frustratingly fragile waste of time and energy that I will never get back. There are far too many kinks for Big Bad Wolf to iron out here, be it a generational misunderstanding of H.P. Lovecraft as a whole, or the dreadful technical state in which I had the displeasure of playing it. Or possibly it is the muddled storytelling and stilted writing, unimaginative and repetitive puzzle design, and about everything this game attempts but fails to execute. At the end of the day, it is a game hinging on the hope that its audience has never played far better and more polished Lovecraftian titles.
