    Cry of Fear was an audacious Half-Life 1 mod that turned into a full fledged game for release on Steam about a year after the release. In short, this game is great. This game contains a gripping story of a young man named Simon who is lost in himself and struggling to survive when monsters appear. Cry of Fear contains a single player campaign that claims to take about eight hours time, but for my first playthrough I was about 12-16 hours of gametime. The gameplay is like most survival horror games, but you are limited, you don't have a briefcase like Resident Evil 4. you do have a backpack and your pockets but you cannot carry everything, forcing you to make sacrifices on what you want to carry and what you NEED to carry, this aspect helps produce more tension when trying to figure out, should I keep this gun even though I have one clip? Or take the melee weapon and key and continue on? The controls work well, and it's not clunky or difficult, except one section of the game which required platforming and was my sole problem with the game.

    Cry of Fear's atmosphere is great, the dark corridors, the creepy forests to a tight packed school, the environments are varied and have a great way of getting you in the mood and into the game. Another aspect of the atmosphere in sound, Cry of Fear has not only a wonderful soundtrack with scary, dark tracks to beautiful melodies, but the sound in the game. Whether they are foot steps around the corner edging closer or bumping on the walls or a scream in the distance, Cry of Fear definitely full fills the scare factor.

    On the topic of features, Cry of Fear has a good lengthed single player campaign, not like a Slender game that takes about 20-40 minutes, this game takes hours. There is also another secret campaign after beating the first, then a completely separate co-op campaign, and multiple custom campaigns along with a custom campaign and map creator that is intuitive and easy to use. Not to mention Cry of Fear's "Suicide Mode" which is basically survival, you kill enemies to decrease the amount of time on the clock to reach zero and survive, it's difficult, but fun and you can do it with friends.

    All in all, Cry of Fear is an amazing package, you get so much content and a wondrous game that was made very well for such a small team, Team Psykskallar did a great job, and did I mention this game is absolutely free on Steam? Go play and have fun! 9/10    … Expand

    Cry of Fear is a horror game developed by Team Psykskallar. It has a good storyline. Good game mechanics .The atmosphere is dense. The jumpscares were there at the right time. I like the sound effects and the music. About 8-10 hours of gameplay. Good replay value .I find that some of the monsters get quite annoying later in the game.     Free games already gain a huge score for that purpose, but few free games have such an original and thrilling game as Cry of Fear. It was made as a psychological horror game, based of the Source Engine and by god; is it fantastic. The atmosphere, pacing and scares of this game are better than some of the recent entries in AAA horror games like Silent Hill Downpour or FEAR 3. If you can,Free games already gain a huge score for that purpose, but few free games have such an original and thrilling game as Cry of Fear.     Not a bad game, really scary at some points. Graphics and game-play could have been a bit smoother, but other than that this is pretty fun. I would recommend you download it, its FREE why not.

    Cry of Fear is one of the best horror games i've ever played!The scenario is amazing,the atmosphere of the game makes you scared,the audio is creepy,but the graphics are bad.The Team Psykskallar did a great job and i love the game.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cry of Fear is everything you could want in a survival horror game. It's scary, it has a deep and thoughtful narrative, it's immersive, and it is an incredible experience throughout.

    The game's central themes of depression and self-harm are evident through the player character, Simon. Upon being struck by a car, he awakens to a nightmarish version of his hometown, devoid of life, save for the creatures that now seek to kill him. The game is dark and genuinely scary, and is an incredibly gripping experience the whole way through.

    The game's narrative focuses on Simon's suicidal depression, and the whole game is a symbolic journey of his suffering with his condition. As someone who has dealt with depression before, this game strikes a particular chord with me, as I could just picture myself in the same place as Simon throughout the experience. The game's mature content reminds me of Silent Hill 2's own depressing narrative, and its own very dark and grim themes, but the game handles it beautifully, and it really feels like it comes from a place that knows what it's like.

    The gameplay is action-oriented, but purpose built to make you feel alone and afraid. You'll have sticks to hit with and guns to shoot with, but the enemies are numerous and the environments are dark and creepy, and even the open and decently lit streets feel unsettling when you know you're entirely alone. The indoors environments can get truly terrifying when all you have to light you way is your phone's light and you can just hear something off in the distance, but you don't know what it is. Although some monster designs can be a bit uninspired, the way they are presented makes for some genuine scares.

    The gameplay is your standard first person shooter fare, with melee weapons to boot, and it all handles tightly and fluidly. The guns in this game handle incredibly well, and the time and effort the developers went to in order to make the guns look and sound realistic is amazing. By far the most realistic guns I have seen in any game. The details are impeccable, and you can even see engravings and serial numbers on the sides of some firearms. The sounds they make when they fire and are reloaded are so good, and those reload animations are so amazing I could watch it for hours (that doesn't really have anything to do with anything, I just really love the guns in this game).

    The music of the game is also amazing, with some tracks I even listen to just to listen to them. The tracks fit the scene they're played in well, to the tense and high tempo drums mixed with screams during a frantic fight with multiple monsters in a pitch black environment, to the somber tracks that play when things are calm, making you slow down and reflect on everything you've been through up to now, instilling deep emotions within the player at all the right times, whether it be fear or loneliness or sadness or calmness.

    The graphics betray the fact that this is a Half-Life 1 mod. The game easily looks just as good as Half-Life 2, even better in some aspects. It's amazing just what the developers have achieved using the engine they did. Everything looks amazing, especially the item models.

    For its asking price of absolutely nothing on Steam, it's a must-own for horror fans. It's a game that's thought-provoking and impacting, and will leave you thinking about it for a long time after you've finished it. It's an amazing game, and added with the emotional connection I happen to have with it, it's one that I can never forget.    … Expand

    Words cannot describe this game :3 because this game has everything like athmoshphere, and yeah a choke full lot of problem but its free and had a lengthy campaign

I found this game some years ago on steam, i wanted to play a good horror game so i searched in steam horror games and i found CoF, the game looked pretty good (enough to have been programmed with the gold source engine and it is seen that they squeezed to the maximum) and the reviews where very positive, so i looked the pictures of the game on the page of steam and it looked so fcking creepy.
    Years later when i bought my gaming laptop i was ready to play and finish Cry of Fear but... the first 10 minutes of the game made me think that i was going to suffer all the game, i was completely scared and surprised, the way they used this abandoned places and the monsters in the game was too good, it makes you feel scared and weak beacuse the creators (Team Psykskallar) actually visited abandoned places and recreated on the gold source for the game, also just as silent hill they make you feel weak beacuse the monsters not only are gonna freak you out, also they are very strong and fast.

    Something i want to congratulate Andreas Ronnberg and Team Psykskallar is for the realism in the game.
    In normal videogames the ammo is something that is comepletely unrealistic, in Cry of Fear if you reload a gun with bullets in, you throw those bullets and you cant get them back beacuse that´s what happens in real life, if you reload a gun without knowing that there are still bullets on the cartridge you lost those bullets. Another realistic thing is that when you run sometimes you slip and take damage, also happens when you walk on a paper of the floor or when you run in stairs.

    Horror.
    The horror in this game is comepletely original and sometimes there are some screamers but really well done, the monsters are really scaary not only beacuse the aspect, the way the move is really creepy and it maybe remind you to silent hill monsters. The atmosphere in the game is scary, only onces in the game we can see the light of the sun, but the 90% of the game is on night.

    The story of Cry of Fear is totally original, sad, cruel, depressing, scary and its a game really enjoiable and if you wanna play something different play Cry of Fear, and if you want to play something like CoF there is the previous game of Team Psykskallar Afraid of Monsters that is also a great game.

Play this in the dark with headphones and you will scream, I guarantee. The story is light, but not bad; the game has a good length of about 8-10 hours on the easiest difficulty, and MUCH longer on the harder difficulties.     CoF is scary and is an improvement from previous mod Afraid of Monsters with two of the developers being part of this team. There are many original enemies and it used the GoldSrc engine from HL1 in a good way with different mechanics and movement. Levels are original and you fight many bosses.     Very good game, cannot believe from a mod it comes to a standalone game, very good and scares the living hell out of me! And its best to play with friends, althought it is a bit clunky to play. It is a true horror experience!

    i thin its great i have yet to beat it but i just got it and i got scared it had some bugs and i kept getting stuck but iknow they can fix it...still 10/10

It has a very high replay value, on top of all the included maps,An amazing work of art, Cry of Fear is an atmospheric horror game that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It provides fun and satisfaction at well-structured intervals, occasional puzzles to work the brain, plenty of secrets to search for and discover, all packed with first-person shooting action to break the silence. It has a very high replay value, on top of all the included maps, which also include a number of Co-op maps to experience the horror with your friends. Although it may seem challenging, outdated, slow, and annoying at times, I advise that newer users push through-Cry of Fear makes up for all of it with an intriguing story that leaves you wanting to come back once you're in far enough, and interesting mechanics that pique the curiosity. It really challenges your inventory management skill for a survival-horror game, and, overall, provides an extremely well-rounded experience to hopefully be remembered for another generation.

    As a free game, Cry of Fear is really great. I liked the story and "soft" jumpscares. Visuals might be better but still its a free game, mod-like. So I'm not complaining too much. :)

    If you know me... you know I adore and nearly worship horror and I thought that I might really enjoy this one, and I know that this may be an indie game, (a mod for Half Life 1) but it was so hard to understand. I never found myself saying "I wonder what happens." because I knew what was going to happen.
    The voice acting was... okay. But I couldn't wrap myself in the story.     Amazing 'Free To Play" game on STEAM! But be warned it's very intense and not your average survival horror. Shows very intense scenes and depression and definitely not for the faint of heart. These 2 go hand in hand when used right but cry of fear takes this psychological and horror experience to another level. This game blew my mind when it came out and even now it finds new ways to amaze me every time. The soundtrack and the enemies fit perfectly to the psychological atmosphere of the game. This game will always have a special place in my heart I think I see myself coming back to play it again in the future.… Expand

    The game is very cool, it is not terrible but puts pressure on the atmosphere and for what it becomes scary and it's cool designers have tried and over enemies.

There are even animations that had to be hand animated from the lack of physics with the gold src engine it runs on. This game reminds me a lot of Silent Hill 2 with it's design and atmosphere and also the narrative of what isAs a game, it's pretty good, but as a half life mod, it's legendary.     Best Horror imho, like someone said “9/10 - for full-fledged game, 10/10 - for half-life mod”, as for me - 10/10 but game also has got a certain number of bugs, for example bug with telescope, ladder stuck, etc. So - 9/10 (I didn’t played co-op)

    Absolutely terrifying. There were actually a few instances where I actually panicked & knocked over my monitor. The atmosphere in Cry of fear is what scares me most, it is so well done. The voice acting is decent, but I think Simon's voice could have used a bit of work. Overall though, this game really kicks ass!

    A real surprise, I tried it just by the word "free", but I found a game done with pure heart, specially knowing the limitations that the developers faced creating it.     I remember buying Half-life just so I could play this mod (but now its a free standalone). Amazing graphics (for half life), amazing story, amazing endings, amazing setting and good gameplay. Also, it's how I got my username! Polisbil and Kaniner.

    So I was hoping for the multiplayer, found no opponents.
    That leaves the events. Tried the halloween event. It left me entirely unimpressed, I walk an entire school with most of the doors closed except for 2.     Isn't psychological horror. Endless bugs. Multiple segments of forced damage. Blatant symbolism. Lack of symbolism. Invisible walls and ice physics during platforming. A waste of time.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game "Cry of Fear" is the worst game. I cannot understand what I do. When starting game, I have a camera, and I am in darkness suddenly. It is all. So, it is not interesting. I cannot confirm it as a game. So I grade 0 point to it.

    Additionally, there are many malfunctions in this game. For example, dark gray sentences in black background are hard to read.    … Expand

    [First. the pros!] -Cry of Fear is an insane rollercoaster and a heart attack thrill ride. It takes inspiration from games like Silent Hill and it definitely shows. The voice acting, to be honest, is decent, but the story itself really shines. The graphics are definitely fitting for this game, too. The atmosphere is genuinely chilling at times, along with the background ambiet noise and music, it really keeps you on your toes, the psychotic episodes Simon suffers remind me of the nightmare sequences in Max Payne. I really like the different variety of monsters and areas in the game, for a free game, it's pretty huge!

    [Now the cons...] -While loving the monster designs and areas, there are some moments where there's too many monsters in one area, leaving you dying more than once on any occasion. There's been so many times I had low health, close to death with no syringe in sight leaving me defenseless at times to the enemies that may attack at any given time. It wasn't bad, it just got over intense at times. Also some glitches did happen to occur, like going through a doorway only to be flipped around still outside the door.

    Now besides all the cons, I thought this game was amazing, finally a horror game that gets it right! The story itself is thrilling, the environments, chilling, and me nearly wetting my pants trying to see what's around each corner made this a great ride that I'll definitely revisit to see all the endings. Definitely worth checking out especially since it's free!

    Damn scary atmosphere, great level crafting, intracate puzzles, old school game design, survival horror with some action at its finest. A must play for survival horror fans looking for a depressive, dark, and insanely haunting atmosphere. Get Immersed and enjoy the ride!

    This game is pretty good, the horror is really scary at times and could be a "What the f*ck is that" moment, the only criticisms I have is that the game is very linear, and the platforming is janky.

Cry of fear is one of those games that make you question what you're truiy playing, at times the game feels sort of mixed between wanting to be a horror story and allow for certain sections of world building and character development of Simon, and at times it goes for a more classic horror-shooter style like F.E.A.R, this mixture of gameplay definitively shows that the game has gone through different stages of planning and development by Team Psykskallar. As there is no defined route for what the game trully is, certain sections make you feel the intensity of the gun-play between Simon and the Monsters, while others really make you think deeply on the game's backstory and the world that surrounds the player.
    The story as is understandable goes around Simon, a mentally sick individual that has lost both his legs to a car crash, said day being referenced as the "Black day" for Simon. This was an unfortunate event that was the final drop in the glass as Simon's end has just begun as he goes down a path of self-hatred and destruction. Before the accident, he already had been suffering with Mental health, but the loss of his legs was the push to insanity he required. Simon goes to a doctor, Purnell, which after an undisclosed amount of time, realizes Simon's treatment is not efficient, and suggests him a new method for Simon to release his inner thoughts, writting a book.
    The book of Simon is where we play, a manifestation of Simon's inner hatred for everything and everyone around him, representing everything as deformed and evil, the same way he feels in reality to the people around him, those who look at him with pity, and laugh at him, a cripple. Each enemy in the game has some sort of meaning and relevance to Simon in one way or another, making the game feel so more inmersive as we are dealing with the creations of Simon's mind, as deformed as previously mentioned. The aesthetics of the game really sell the game, for a 2012 mod of a 1998 engine, Gold-Source, this feat of a game is AMAZING, and to not spoil any further that I have, it is a game I whole-heartly recommend to play.    … Expand
