However, if you loved the sense of freedom and discovery that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had, then Crimson Desert is the next big game in that genre. Pearl Abyss has truly created something special here, that I suspect we’ll be talking about for years to come.

Despite a few minor issues, Crimson Desert sets a new benchmark for this style of open-world experience, one that will be extremely difficult for future games to match.

Strong performance and a great soundtrack round out this must-play experience.

After spending over 110 hours in Pywel, there’s really no debate: Crimson Desert absolutely delivers on its promise of a massive open world. Content-wise, it’s massive. You’re looking at around 120 to 140 hours just for the main story, and easily up to 400 if you want to see everything. The combat system is also a big highlight, it’s deep, fast-paced, and pretty demanding, with tons of options. Every fight requires focus, but that’s exactly what makes it so satisfying. Visually, the game looks incredible, with a world that feels immersive and believable. That said, it’s not perfect: the difficulty can be pretty unforgiving, it takes time to really get comfortable with the controls, and the story doesn’t always hit as hard as it should. In the end, Crimson Desert is a huge game. Ambitious, sometimes tough, definitely not for everyone, but if you’re willing to fully invest yourself in it, it’s a pretty amazing experience.

The sense of wonder, exploration and combat is top notch and scratches that Skyrim itch I’ve been having for years. The story is weaker and starts super “MMOish”, but it picks up the pace later and immerses you into a political and supernatural war between… well, everybody! By the 100th hour I still have not discovered everything nor did I finish the story, but there is not a minute of free time that I don’t spend playing this game. It pulled me in, and won’t let me go, and at this point, I don’t want it to.

After spending roughly 30 hours with the game, I would have scored the game in the 9.0 out of 10 range. Now that I have completed the story, I feel that score is completely warranted, and would have been even higher if the narrative had a bit more cohesion. Crimson Desert is very fun and gripping, and a game that is very easy to get lost into with an incredible world density, its sandbox mechanics allowing for tons of player expression in traversal, combat, and quest completion, so much so that I feel I will continue to play the game for a long time even after having completed the story. Now completely comfortable with the game's unique quirks, I firmly believe Crimson Desert has the chance of being this year's Baldur's Gate 3 and becoming a benchmark moving forward for all open-world games.

The most significant technical limitation concerns the loading times , which are quite long even with high-end configurations, but are ultimately justifiable given the amount of data to load, especially since once in the game, noticeable loading times are practically non-existent. Then, looking closely, there are a few flaws: detail pop-up (well masked by the overabundance of stimuli) is noticeable while moving, the acting is a bit stiff, there are sporadic issues with lighting and reflections, and above all, a strange night whose darkness doesn't encompass the farthest visible portion of the world, while we are immersed in darkness. But, guys, it really does happen quite often that you're left speechless.

Crimson Desert is the kind of game that usually only comes along once in a generation, so singular in its ambition that it will define the gaming conversation for weeks, if not months, to come. Despite granular misses, Pearl Abyss has showcased what gameplay freedom truly means.

If your concern is that the game wasn't final yet, that's correct — there's a mountain of things still to be polished; but if you think it doesn't work or that it isn't fun, then no, I can assure you that you could spend your whole life in it listening to stories, admiring landscapes, discovering secrets, riding, saving... and even greeting people (yes, that matters too), because everyday life has never been so enjoyable, even in the small things, and the adventures that await you are truly memorable.

Blending combat, survival, and exploration, the game offers over 100 hours of content that may feel superficial to some yet captivating to others. Despite issues like confusing menus and a clunky inventory system, it remains fun and worthy of attention in 2026. Ultimately, the key question is whether you have the time and willingness to dive into its expansive design, which could shine even brighter if it focused less on quantity and more on personality.

Crimson Desert is the kind of game that makes you want to use the word “impressive” every three minutes, and then makes you feel guilty for doing so. Because impressive, technically and quantitatively, it truly is, but the impression it leaves, once the dust of hype has settled, is that of a title that was afraid to choose. Pearl Abyss built a vast world and then filled it with everything, as if emptiness were an enemy to be defeated through sheer volume of content. The result is a game that almost never gets boring, but that only rarely moves you in the deep, lasting way that the titles it borrows from manage to do.

Crimson Desert juggles an insane number of game elements—and some of them inevitably hit the floor. Yet the game is confident enough to keep going regardless, smiling all the while and pretending it’s all just part of the show.

It is impossible to fault Crimson Desert for the sheer generosity it displays. Yet, by pushing this dial too far, Pearl Abyss finds itself ensnared by its own ambitions. The result is a stark disconnect between the technical and immersive qualities of its world and the actual content within it. The storyline leaves one feeling almost entirely indifferent; quests follow one another, largely indistinguishable in their structure; and boss battles—at times approachable, at others absurdly difficult—often force us to repeat the same routine ad nauseam. Fortunately, the gameplay—despite its minor flaws—constantly evolves, infusing the adventure with a cathartic, stress-relieving energy—something absolutely essential to help digest the puzzles devised by the development team. Inconsistent—much like the rest of the game—these puzzles nevertheless have the merit of bringing players together and fostering a genuine sense of community engagement. Add to this an astronomical amount of content—enough to make any completionist’s eyes light up—and you end up with a title that will keep your mind occupied for hundreds of hours. Yes, the journey is enjoyable, exotic, and even stimulating from time to time; yet, Crimson Desert ultimately lacked the structural fortitude to support the lofty pedestal upon which it was placed.

Crimson Desert could be an amazing game in a hypothetical sequel, but right now fails in its own ambition despite its amazing sense of adventure.

Whilst it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the greats, this is still a compelling experience that’s more than worth your time. Come for the visuals, stay for the gripping combat.

Crimson Desert is clearly a labour of love whose developers filled it to the brim. While many central mechanical systems work well, they are accompanied by numerous side systems that never quite earn their place in the wider world of Pywel. There is plenty to enjoy here, but you can’t help shake the feeling that if Pearl Abyss had focused on fewer systems and a more grounded narrative, Crimson Desert could have been truly special.

There’s no denying that Crimson Desert is a massively ambitious game. Bringing together the most inventive parts of Breath Of The Wild, The Witcher, Elden Ring and a dozen more fantasy games means you can still be surprised after sinking hundreds of hours into exploring the beautiful, varied land of Pailune. However, trying to cram so many different mechanics into a game that also offers players total freedom means it often feels a bit hollow.

Crimson Desert is an extremely ambitious open-world adventure, and that ambition is what makes it both incredibly cool and gobsmackingly infuriating in almost equal measure. I had some memorable times exploring this gorgeous world, discovering weird minigames and killing bandits along the way. But those memories were also marred by moments I’d rather forget, like the tedious combat encounters, unintuitive puzzles, awful story, and substantial bugs. There’s lots to love about this quirky, kitchen sink design, and I admire that it’s managed to pack a metric ton of unique mechanics and interesting areas into one package. But it takes work to dig your way through the thick layer of gunk that covers it all, and the mostly competent action-adventure game that’s buried beneath is only sometimes worth that effort.

Crimson Desert constantly tests our patience with technical problems and a confusing narrative, before letting us enjoy its ambitious combat system, exploration and stunning visuals. A game that demands time and a lot of patience for those who manage to overcome the barrier of its lack of polish.

The balance, in particular, isn’t quite right yet. We certainly applaud the fact that the game doesn’t hold your hand, but the contrast is quite stark. In some missions, everything is so broken down and spoon-fed to you that the game guides you through every step like a toddler. And at other times, you have absolutely no idea—and absolutely no explanation—of what you’re supposed to do. The lack of narrative and coherence is clearly a shortcoming. Despite all its flaws, there’s definitely the potential for a fantastic game here. It never becomes as emotionally compelling as Arthur Morgan’s story in Red Dead Redemption 2, and it lacks that childlike wonder of Breath of the Wild, but it all looks great and the massive amount of content makes up for a lot. Crimson Desert is a rough diamond that still needs a good polish. In its current form, it’s an okay game with obvious limitations. With enough post-launch support, it might still achieve what it sets out to do: become one of the better games of the year.

As it stands on release, the best parts of Crimson Desert are buried deep under layers of absurdity.

Combat feels clunky, especially when facing off against one of the many frustrating bosses, and there feels like there is little reward for exploration. Crimson Desert is massive and visually stunning, but to truly enjoy its game world, you’ll have to be willing to make some compromises. The controls take more than a little getting used to and can be a real pain at times, whether you’re using a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard. The quest design and gameplay guidance are among the worst I’ve experienced in a long time. The story leaves me completely cold, the characters spark zero interest, and while Crimson Desert strives for immersion with its detailed, vibrant world, high-quality animations, and many features, it repeatedly undermines that immersion itself.

Proving that looks aren’t everything, Crimson Desert’s stunning visuals and strong performances aren’t enough to save it from being a disappointing experience. Jam-packed with content and systems that make it feel like a Jack of all features, master of none with an unenjoyable gameplay loop, Crimson Desert is really just a single-player MMORPG in all but name.

For players to get more out of this world, Crimson Desert requires a greater sense of purpose - a reason to remain invested in persevering through its most testing moments, to press on for hours in the faith that it will attain some kind of shape. [Issue#423, p.98]

I admire Pearl Abyss’ quick response to some of Crimson Desert’s issues, and I think there’s a real chance that it will eventually feel decent to play. At the moment, though, it simply doesn’t, and even with updates, I have my doubts that it will ever give me a world that’s engaging for anything more than its impressive visuals. There’s a lot to do in Crimson Desert, but so little that I actually wanted to do.

Crimson Desert is a gorgeous audiovisual experience with obtuse mechanics, poor mission design, and a nonexistent story. It plays like an MMO trapped in the frame of a single-player adventure game with too many cooks in the kitchen.

Crimson Desert is an exercise in excess, and it is worse for it. If you believe more is always better and are so enraptured by “world big” that you are willing to overlook substantial, glaring flaws (and there are many), you’ll love Crimson Desert. Perhaps the most damning thing I can say about Crimson Desert is that it is an enormous game with a ton of content, and I spent most of my time with it wishing I was doing anything else.

Crimson Desert is the absolute definition of a massive disappointment. It’s a Ferrari body with a lawnmower engine under the hood. Pearl Abyss tried to please everyone and ended up pleasing no one: Elden Ring fans will be driven mad by the clunky combat, Witcher fans will be bored to tears by the lack of depth, those looking for a world as organic as Breath of the Wild are in for a rude awakening, and the general public will struggle with the abysmal UI and unwarranted difficulty spikes. Riddled with technical issues unacceptable for a blockbuster of this scale, and weighed down by dated writing, Crimson Desert is on the verge of a total systemic failure. The hype train has well and truly derailed. See you in a year, after 150 patches and a mountain of DLC, which, of course, are already in the works.
